David J. Curran
NORTH BERWICK, Maine - David J. Curran, 65, of Elm Street, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, at his home.
Born March 16, 1934, in Boston, he was the son of Alfred J. and Elizabeth M. Phalen Curran. In 1952, he graduated from South Boston High School and went on to graduate from Boston University, where he studied math and teaching.
An Army veteran, he served during the Korean Conflict. He had been a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Rollinsford, N.H.
He enjoyed birds and reading, but he especially loved his boat and fishing.
He was the husband of Anne Pettingell Curran.
In addition to his wife, survivors include one son, Sean Curran of Nashua, N.H.; two daughters, Kris J. King and Darlene DeVito, both of Exeter; two stepdaughters, Dawn Peer of Dover, N.H., and Wendy Fuller of Virginia; two brothers, Alfred and wife, Cathy Curran, of Marshfield, Mass., and Walter and wife, Marie Curran, of Crofton, Md., three sisters, Elizabeth A. and Dorothy A. Curran, both of North Berwick, Maine, Mrs. Scott (Mary) Steeves of Newburyport, Mass.; nine grandchildren; and 11 nieces and nephews.
Ruth H. Vickery
KITTERY - Ruth H. Vickery, of 161 Whipple Road, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 1999, in Portsmouth.
Born May 11, 1915, in Pittsfield, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Earle N. Vickery and Nellie Maude Vickery. About 20 years ago, she moved to Kittery with her close friend and companion, Winifred Cole, who died in 1987. She grew up in Pittsfield, graduating from Maine Central Institute in 1934. After graduation, she moved to Boston where she attended art school.
She was employed as an interior decorator in Boston, working for many large Boston concerns, including Filene's.
An avid photographer, she also loved animals, children, planting and gardening.
She was a member of the Unitarian-Universalist South Church in Portsmouth, the Friends of the Rice Public Library, the Kittery Historical Society, the Kittery Garden Club, and the Women's League at the Unitarian-Universalist South Church in Portsmouth.
Survivors include several cousins.
She was predeceased by a brother, Charles N. Vickery, who died in 1972.
Michael J. Arundel
HAMPTON - Services for Michael J. Arundel, 70, of 4 Cogger St., were held Saturday afternoon at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel J. Sinibaldi, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, officiated. Veterans services followed by both Hampton American Legion Post No. 35 and by Piscataqua Chapter No. 4 Disabled American Veterans of Newington. The American flag was presented to his widow, Catherine M. (Galvin) Arundel. Burial was in High Street Cemetery, with committal prayers by the Rev. Sinibaldi.
Barbara A. Moynahan
HAMPTON - Services for Barbara A. Moynahan, 62, wife of George W. Moynahan Jr., of 170 Central Road, Rye, were held Saturday morning at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert J. Whittet of Rye officiated. Nelson K. Ward was organist, and Patricia Mackensen was soloist. Words of remembrance were offered by three of her children, Stephen Moynahan, Amy Moynahan and Teresa M. Heath. Burial followed in Central Cemetery, Rye, with committal services by the Rev. Whittet. Pallbearers were Daniel Moynahan, Michael Moynahan, Leon Blaisdell, Thomas Boice, George Berry, Patrick McMahon, Greg Hankin and Ian Johnston.
Barbara M. Bourgeois Murphy
SEABROOK BEACH - Barbara (Mulligan) Bourgeois Murphy, 79, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at her home of natural causes.
Born in Lowell, Mass., she was raised and educated there. She attended Burdett College in Boston.
She spent much of her time in St. Augustine, Fla.
She was a member of the Star of the Sea Church in Salisbury, Mass.
She was the wife of the late Andre H. Bourgeois, who died in 1975, and the late John L. Murphy, who died this year.
Survivors include a son, Craig Bourgeois and his wife, Barbara, of Hampton; a daughter, Bonnie Lighthart and her husband, Kelly, of Buffalo, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a son, Andre Bourgeois.
Dorothy E. Seames
YORK - Dorothy E. Seames, 81, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Homestead Nursing Home in Kittery.
Born April 13, 1918, in Pittsfield, Maine, she was the daughter of Oliver Cromwell and Florice (Dunton) Baker.
In earlier years, she worked as a legal secretary for Lehr Insurance Co. and as a clerk for the town of Pittsfield. She was later employed as a bookkeeper by Starkey Ford in York.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, was a good cook and an excellent baker.
She was the wife of Hollis William Seames of York.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her children, Bonnie Jean Seames Leon of Pittston, Maine, and Ronald Dean Seames of Augusta; two sisters, Florice Hubbard of Bangor and Phyllis Wright of Pittsfield, Maine; a brother, Charles William Baker of Rockland, Maine; a granddaughter, Vanessa Jayne Leon of Pittston; four nieces, Linda Cumming and her husband, Peter, of East Holden, Maine, and Sheryl Willis, Sally Strout and Lorri Ann Brown; six nephews, Gregoire Wright and his wife, Gayle, of Pittsfield, and James, William, Ricky, Michael, and David Baker.
She was predeceased by a half-sister, Ethel Thompson.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 24, at D.H. Shorey Funeral Chapel in Pittsfield.
Chaseley W. Friedrichsen
ATHENS, Ga. - Chaseley W. Friedrichsen, 36, of 165 Fuller Road, died Friday, Oct. 22, 1999, at Athens Regional Medical Center in Athens, Ga.
Born Jan. 3, 1963, at Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts, he was the son of Chaseley W. and Marie (Ferretti) Friedrichsen of Portsmouth. He was a 1981 graduate of Portsmouth High School and was a member of the PHS band.
He was an Eagle Scout and served in the Army.
He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Athens.
After his service in the Army, he was employed as an over-the-road truck driver for various trucking companies, including McLaughlin Moving Co. Inc. in Portsmouth.
In addition to his parents, survivors include two brothers, Stephen P. Friedrichsen of Eliot, and Joseph C. Friedrichsen of Fall River, Mass.; two nephews, Dylan and Justin, both of Eliot; and several cousins.
Timothy J. Buckley
PORTSMOUTH - Timothy Justin Buckley, 83, of 737 Woodbury Ave., died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, after a lengthy period of failing health.
Born April 30, 1916, in Portsmouth, he was the son of Michael and Bridget (Cronin) Buckley. He attended St. Patrick and Portsmouth High schools.
A Navy veteran, he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After 22 years, he retired as a chief petty officer, 18 of which he served at sea. He served with distinction, receiving many honors and awards. Among them, he received the Presidential Citation for his unit and the Naval Commendation Medal.
After serving in the Navy, he was employed as an outside machinist in Shop 38 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, retiring in the late 1970s.
He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and of St. Catherine of Siena Church.
His family was the most important thing in his life.
He was the husband of Alice (Feeney) Buckley.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two nephews, Robert Wylie and his wife, Rebecca, of Portsmouth, and John Justin Wylie of North Hampton; a niece, Mrs. Byron (Betty) Brown of Delaware; a sister-in-law, Sister Marion Feeney of the Sisters of Mercy in Windham; several grandnieces and nephews also survive.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Buckley, and three sisters, Frances Wylie, Mary Green and Margaret Buckley.
Arthur B. Ireland
PORTSMOUTH. - Funeral services for Arthur B. Ireland, 79, of Grayson, Ga., were held at Buckminster Chapel on Friday. The Rev. Douglas Carter, pastor of the Greenland Community Congregational Church, officiated.
The American flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to his widow, Charlotte (Pounds) Ireland.
Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland, with committal services by the Rev. Carter.
Bearers were John Ireland, Norman Ireland, Richard Ireland, Ed Ireland, Charlie Ireland and Billy Ireland.
Paul E. Hume
YORK - Paul Edward Hume, 71, of 15 U.S. Route 1, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born April 8, 1928, in Detroit, he was the son of George Edward and Irene Hume.
He spent time as a child in Canada, where he was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and Merchant Marines, before joining the U.S. Air Force and serving in World War II. As a member of the Armed Services, he also served in the early United States space program.
He supported the Disabled American Veterans Association.
He was employed as a retail sales manager for a number of local stores and the J.M. Fields store in Newington until its closing. He also greatly appreciated his friends at Ocean National Bank in Kittery, where he was most recently employed.
He enjoyed hunting, swimming, flying, and his time spent as a disc jockey.
He was the husband of Rosalia (Gania) Hume for 52 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, David, and wife Debra Hume of Rowley, Mass.; three daughters, Paula and husband Mark Callanan of South Berwick; Irene and husband Richard Adams of Raymond, N.H.; and Christina Noel of Bedford, N.H.; eight grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Genevieve E. Karkota
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Mrs. Genevieve E. (Lande) Karkota, 75, of 1161 Woodbury Ave., were held at Buckminster Chapel, in Portsmouth, on Saturday. Rev. Robert Stiefel, pastor of the Christ Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, officiated. Readings were given by Jessica Zaricki and Kent Lande. Wendell Purrington was soloist and Richard Gremlitz was the organist.
Burial was in the NH State Veteran's Cemetery in Boscawen.
Bearers were Darrin Clark, Alex Zaricki, Hal Clark, Dennis Karkota, Michael Collins, and Nick Zaricki.
Janet L. Coleman
YORK - Janet L. (Neal) Coleman, 70, of Church Street Extension, York Beach, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 after a brief illness. She had resided in York Beach for 21 years.
Born June 2, 1929, in Waltham, Mass., she was the daughter of Robert E. Neal and Helen G. (O'Toole) Neal.
She was the wife of Richard W. Coleman Sr. for 47 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include her six children, Richard W. Coleman Jr. of the Netherlands, Susan L. O'Connor of Rochester, N.H., Cynthia H. Derrane of Raynham, Mass., James R. Coleman of Lowell, Mass., Nancy E. Coleman of York Beach and Peter N. Coleman of Milford, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Cady Elizabeth Lawrence
SOUTH BERWICK - Cady Elizabeth Lawrence, infant daughter of Maine Senate President Mark W. Lawrence and Christina L. Cunningham of Lords Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999 at York Hospital. She was born Oct. 22, 1999 at York Hospital.
In addition to her parents, Cady is survived by her maternal grandparents, John and Donna Cunningham of Naples, Fla.; and her paternal grandparents, Irving and Evelyn Lawrence of Kittery. She is also survived by 12 aunts and uncles and 11 cousins.
Janet S. Carey
SOUTH HAMPTON - Janet S. Carey, 78, of Highland Road, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at Exeter Healthcare after a long battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 3, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late William and Katherine (Nally) Spencer. She had resided in South Hampton for the last 23 years. She was formerly of Mamaroneck, N.Y.
She was a graduate of Girl's High and St. Joseph's College for Women in Brooklyn. She received her bachelor's degree in english and literature.
She served as a lieutenant in the Navy during World War II, assigned to the Office of Gen. Leslie Groves, military director of the "Manhattan Project".
She worked as an assistant to the editor at WPIX_TV in New York, where she met her husband, William Carey, an employee of the New York Daily News.
She was a parishioner at St. Michael's Church in Exeter.
In addition to her husband of 50 years, survivors include three sons, Thomas Carey of Norwalk, Conn., Joseph Carey of Bethesda, Md., and James Carey of South Hampton; four daughters, Jane Carey-Hallgren of Phoenix, Ariz., Elizabeth Hart of Buffalo Grove, Ill., Margaret Carey of Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., and Marian Carey of Salem, Mass.; and 14 grandchildren.
