Raymond Sutherland
SPRINGFIELD, N.H. - Raymond Sutherland, 58, of 99 Old Grafton Road, died on Saturday Oct. 23, 1999, at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H. after a long period of illness.
Born Nov. 23, 1940, in Camden, N.J., he was the son of Raymond and Lillian (Kemble) Sutherland.
Mr. Sutherland served in the Air Force for more than 20 years.
He was a salesman for Ed Byrnes Chevrolet in Dover and for Acura in New Hampton, N.H. He then worked as a sales associate for Ritz Camera in Florida and in Newington.
In addition to his mother, survivors include a son, Donald A. Sutherland of Portsmouth; a daughter, Dawn Sutherland of Portsmouth; two grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Frank (Judy) Cammarota of Deptford, N.J.; a niece and several cousins.
Efrosene Maltezos
MANCHESTER - Efrosene (Bouka) Maltezos, 98, formerly of Manchester, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999 at St. Ann Home, Dover, N.H. after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 9, 1901, in Kastraki, Greece, she was the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Zarakosta) Bouka. She had resided in Manchester for 80 years, moving to Dover five months ago to live with her daughters.
Mrs. Maltezos had been employed as a spinner at the Amoskeag Mills.
She was a communicant of Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Manchester and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary "Soteria" at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church.
Mrs. Maltezos was predeceased by her husband, George Maltezos and her son, Harry "Lucky" Maltezos.
Family members include her two daughters, Athena Laipis of Dover, and Mary Hyde of Wells, Maine; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Anthony Bobotas of Lexington, Mass. and Paraskevi Fousias of Kavala, Greece; and several nieces and nephews.
Ralph N. Rylander
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - Ralph N. Rylander, 72, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Life Care Center in McMinnville, Ore.
Born April 16, 1927, in Newton, Mass., he was the son of Thor and Mira Neal Rylander. He was raised and schooled in New Castle. He was a graduate of McIntosh Colleg in Dover and was in the Marines during World War II.
He married Betty Harwood, his wife of 52 years, on May 29, 1947, in Portsmouth and lived in New Castle until 1957, when he moved to Long Island, N.Y. He lived in various areas until settling in Lake Oswego in 1994.
He worked in the automobile industry for Volvo, Toyota, and General Motors most of his life.
In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Karen Eisenhauer of West Linn, Ore., and Elizabeth Rylander of Durham, Ore.; three sons, Bruce Rylander of Redmond, Wash., James Rylander of Beaverton, Ore., and William Rylander of Tigard, Ore.; a sister, Bettie Toomey of New Castle.; and seven grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Wendy Rylander; and a son, Eric Rylander.
Alan Anderson
ANDERSON - Alan "Andy" N. Anderson Jr., 57, of 2 Cass St., Exeter, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999. An informal memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home, 141 Epping Road, Exeter. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. The family requests no visiting hours and that flowers please be omitted. Donations may be made to the New Outlook Teen Center, PO Box 865, Court Street, Exeter, NH 03833, or to the Seacoast Hospice, 10 Hampton Road, Exeter, NH 03833. Burial at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Phillips Church Cemetery, Garrison N.Y.
Janet S. Carey
SOUTH HAMPTON - Largely attended funeral services for Janet S. Carey were held Wednesday morning at the Brewitt Funeral Home. A Mass was also celebrated that morning at St. Michael's Church by Fr. Mark Drouin, assisted by longtime family friend, Fr. James Hayes of Boston. Organist was Denise Kelly and soloist was John Kelly. The first reading was given by Thomas Carey and the second reading was given by Jane Carey Hallgren. The Homily was by Fr. Hayes.
Words of sympathy were given by her grandchildren and her oldest son and daughter. The burial followed at the South Hampton Cemetery with prayers by both Fr. Drouin and Fr. Hayes.
Pallbearers were Thomas, Joseph, James and Philip Carey, William E. Spencer, Sean Curran, Patrick Murphy and Matthew Hart.
Chaseley W. Friedrichsen
ATHENS, Ga. - Funeral services for Chaseley W. Friedrichsen Jr., 36, of 165 Fuller Road, formerly of Portsmouth, were held Tuesday at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth with services at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Newington. The Rev. Paul T. Lindstrom, pastor, officiated. Liturgical Deacon was Steve Bush and Jan Rhodes was cross bearer. Chaseley's brothers, Joseph C. Friedrichsen and Stephen P. Friedrichsen and his uncle, Lewis Ferretti, gave words of remembrance. Organist was Gregg Pannier and Christine Stohlberg was soloist. Pallbearers were Stephen P. Friedrichsen, Joseph C. Friedrichsen, David Saunders, Paul Fiorini, Charles MacDonald and Joseph Palumbo.
In attendance were members of the church and former Portsmouth High classmates.
Burial was Wednesday in Saint Peter's Cemetery, Sandwich, Mass. with committal services by the Rev. Jonathan C. Ahanquist, pastor of the Fist Lutheran Church in West Barnstable, mass.
An honor guard was formed by a detachment from the Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, Fort Drum, N.Y. under the direction of Staff Sgt. Matthew Sviben NCOIC, including Sgt. Joel Goodale, Spc. William Kerslake, Spc. Abran Kory, Spc. Timothy Laolner, Pfc. Brad Baker and Pvt. Shawn Culver. A volley was fired under the direction of Sgt. Joel Goodale NCOIC including Spc. William Kerslake, Spc. Abran Kory, Spc. Timothy Laolner, Pfc. Brad Baker and Pvt. Shawn Culver.
Pfc. Brandon Craddock sounded taps.
The American Flag that draped the casket was folded under the direction of Staff Sgt. Matthew Sviben NCOIC by Sgt. Joel Goodale, Spc. William Kerslake, Spc. Abran Kory, Spc. Timothy Laolner, Pfc. Brad Baker and Pvt. Shawn Culver. It was presented to Chaseley's mother, Marie (Ferretti) Friedrichsen by Staff Sgt. Sviben.
Alan N. Anderson
EXETER - Alan "Andy" N. Anderson Jr., 57, of 2 Cass St., died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at his home.
Born April 20, 1942, in Garrison, N.Y., he was the son of Sarah Anderson Prentice of Cohasset, Mass., and the late Alan N. Anderson Sr. For many years, he lived in Hingham, Mass. He had resided in Groveland, Mass., before moving to Exeter two years ago. He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy, Deerfield, Mass., and Trinity College, in Hartford, Conn. He received his master's degree from Salem State College, in Salem, Mass.
He was the founder of Recovery Services of Exeter, a counseling service dedicated to helping teens and their families with substance-abuse problems. He was a well-loved volunteer and board of directors member at the New Outlook Teen Center in Exeter as well as a foster parent to dozens of teen-age ap] boys without families. An avid skier and sailer, he generously shared his love of the slopes and the ocean with the teens to whom he dedicated his life.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two brothers, Douglas K. Anderson of Charlotte, N.C., and Martin B. Anderson of Portland, Ore.; two nephews, B. Tyler Anderson of Athens, Ga., and Erik B. Anderson of Portland, Ore.; two nieces, Sarah G. Anderson and Heather Anderson, both of Portland, Ore.; one foster son, Carmelo Roderiguez of New Hampshire; and a foster granddaughter, Kayla Roderiguez, also of New Hampshire.
Maria G. Frederick
HOUSTON - Maria Gil Frederick, 80, of Houston, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
She was born June 18, 1919, in Colombia, South America.
She was the wife of Ronald C. Frederick of Houston.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by six children, Samantha Pierce and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Ricardo Williams and his wife, Norma, of Miami,, Michael Denton of Portland, Ore., Vivian "Cookie" Seyfarth and he husband, David, of San Antonio, Deanna Frederick and her husband, Gordon, of Dallas, and Christina Mackey and her husband, Paul, of Rye, N.H.; seven grandsons; five granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Rosana Walker.
Alden L. Mayo
ROCHESTER, N.H. - Alden L. Mayo, 70, of 2 South Cranberry Lane, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after a lengthy period of illness.
Born March 7, 1929, in York, Maine, he was the son of Fred and Lillian (Perkins) Mayo and had resided in Somersworth before moving to Rochester 10 years ago.
He served in the Air Force.
For 25 years, he had worked as a security guard for Fuel Storage of Newington.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He was the husband of Linna L. (Poulson) Mayo for 45 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include seven sons, Timothy A. Mayo of Raleigh, N.C., David L. Mayo of Dover, N.H., Paul A. Mayo of Rochester, N.H., Gregory A. Mayo of Kittery, Maine, William J. Mayo or Portsmouth, Randolph C. Mayo of Dover, N.H., and Terrance F. Mayo of Rochester, N.H.; one daughter, Linna L. Thompson of Rochester, N.H.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Fred Mayo of Ogunquit, Maine, and James Mayo of Newfields, Maine; a sister, Arlene Mooers; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a brother, Edson Mayo, and a sister, Marjorie Morrison.
Walter A. Gallagher
YORK - Walter Ash Gallagher, 86, of Moulton Lane, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born June 27, 1913, in Newfoundland, Canada, he was the son of Robert and Nettie (Ash) Gallagher. He graduated from Somerville High School in Massachusetts and had attended Boston University.
He served as a captain in the Army during World War II.
He was a senior vice president and executive officer for the John Hancock Insurance Co. in Boston for 45 years.
He was a member of the York Golf and Tennis Club.
An artist who worked with both watercolors and oil paints, he enjoyed painting historical landmarks and scenes of Arizona, where he and his wife would stay for six months of every year. He also enjoyed painting religious scenes.
He was the husband of Dorothy G. (MacIsaac) Gallagher of York for 34 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, James Gallagher, and a daughter, Mary Gallagher, of Hull, Mass.; a sister, Ruth Razey of York Harbor; two grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and many friends.
Hurley R. Bridges
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for MR. Hurley "Bud" Bridges, 75, of 41 Suzanne Drive, were held Friday at the Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. James Church, Portsmouth, with Fr. Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, as celebrant. Eva Marie Bly and Cole Pouliot gave readings. Clifford Bridges gave words of remembrance. Noah Bly did presentation of the gifts. Acolytes were Joanne Greene and Richard Ward. Theresa Hickley was bearer of the crucifix. Janet Green was the soloist and Jean Goss was the organist.
In attendance were members of St. James Church, former associates of the Portsmouth Police Department and representatives from the Portsmouth Police Commission.
The American Flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to Mr. Bridges' wife, Helen V. (Hanley) Bridges.
Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Fr. Jean.
Wake services were held Thursday evening at the Buckminster Chapel by Fr. Jean. Elk services were also held Thursday evening at the chapel by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 184 of Dover, N.H., including Elliot Wyman, Exalted Ruler; Colby W. McDonald, PER; Joseph Marshburn, PER, Sec.; and Donald Walker, Tiler.
Antionette C. Petit
EXETER - Antionette C. (Plante) Petit, 93, a former longtime resident of Exeter died Friday, OCt. 29, 1999 after a brief illness at the Rockingham Home in Brentwood, where she had resided for the past six years.
Born July 23, 1907, in Central Falls, R.I., she was the daughter of the late Ulric and Evelina (Pariseau) Plante.
Mrs. Petit was an active member and housekeeper of St. Michaels Parish in Exeter.
She was the wife of the late Oliva Petit, who died in 1963.
She is survived by two daughters, Lucille Latour of Exeter and Cecile Cross of Newfields; three sons, Donald and Paul Petit, both of Epping and Norman Petit of Exeter; 19 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six sisters, Eva Laperche of Wrentham, Mass., Lillian McCline, of Attleboro, Mass., Loretta Drapeau of St. Foye, Quebec, Rita Gallager of Cumberland, R.I., Anette Dyl of Cumberland, R.I. and Jeanette Flanagan of East Providence, R.I.; and several nieces and nephews.
Ruth R. Varney
ELIOT - Ruth R. Varney, 99, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999 at her residence.
Born June 22, 1900, in South Berwick, Maine, she was the daughter of Ernest and Adeline (Wilkerson) Richardson and was a 1919 graduate of Berwick Academy.
Mrs. Varney was a member of the First Congregational Church of Eliot and was a recipient of the Boston Post Cane in May of 1997.
She was a life member of the Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 Order of the Eastern Star in Kittery, a past president of the Kittery Garden Club, a member of the Eliot Garden Club and a member of Strawbery Banke. She was a former member of the Portsmouth Hospital Guild and enjoyed hooking rugs and working with ceramics. She especially enjoyed being with her family.
She was the wife of the late Judge George D. Varney Sr., who died in September of 1982. She was also predeceased by a brother, Ernest Richardson; and two sisters, Anna E. Roberts and Mildred Hillman.
She is survived by a son, George D. Varney Jr. and his wife, Jo-Ann Varney, of Kittery Point; a daughter, Josephine A. Varney Robbins of Eliot; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Alan N. Anderson Jr.
EXETER - The funeral for Alan N. "Andy" Anderson Jr., 57, of 2 Cass St., was held Saturday at the Stockbridge Funeral Home. The Rev. J. Jermain Bodine, pastor of the Stratham Community Church, officiated. Jean Goss was organist, and Julianne Richards was soloist. Words of remembrance were offered by Doug Anderson and Bill Richards. Burial was in St. Phillips Cemetery, Garrison, N.Y.
Alice B. Demers
PORTSMOUTH - Alice B. (Freeman) Rines Demers, 92, of 928 South St., widow of Leo Demers, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth.
Born Dec. 17, 1906, in Eliot, Maine, she was the daughter of Allan and Bessie L. (Smart) Freeman
Mrs. Demers and her husband, who died on April 1, 1993, were married on July 2, 1992 after they had met as residents of the Edgewood Centre in Portsmouth. At the time of their marriage, Alice was 86 and Leo was 81.
Before her retirement, Mrs. Demers had been employed at the Rockingham Hotel.
She was predeceased by her first husband, retired Lt. Sewell L. Rines, U.S. Navy, who died April 5, 1966.
She is survived by two nieces, Paula Knight of Bushnell, Fla. and Robin Marlowe of Orangeburg, S.C.
