Antionette Petit
EXETER - Largely attended funeral services were held Monday at the Brewitt Funeral Home for Antoinette (Plante) Petit, 92, of 277 Water St., who died Oct. 29, 1999.
The Rev. Marc Drouin, pastor, officiated at the St. Michaels Parish Mass, assisted by Fr. Robert E. Gorski. Organist was Denise Kelly. Many church members were in attendance; for many years, Mrs. Petit was housekeeper at the Rectory.
Sunday evening at the funeral home, the Rev. Drouin recited prayers and a tribute was read that had been sent by former assistant pastor, Fr. Richard Kelly of Jaffrey, N.H.
The committal service was at Exeter Cemetery with the Rev. Drouin giving the prayers.
Pallbearers were Michael and Joshua Latour, Steve French, David Petit, Raymond Petit and Norman Petit Jr.
Phyllis L. Monko
HAMPTON - The funeral for Phyllis L. Monko, 82, formerly of Hampton Falls and Eliot, who died Oct. 27, 1999, was held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. David L. Cornell of York, Maine, officiated. Jean Goss was organist and Erica Monko was soloist. Joseph P. Monko Jr., Mrs. Monko's son, offered words of remembrance. Burial followed in Brooks Memorial Park Cemetery, Eliot, Maine, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Cornell.
Ruth R. Varney
ELIOT - Funeral services for Ruth R. Varney, 99, of 26 Varney Lane, widow of Judge George D. Varney Sr., were held Monday at the Lucas & Eaton Funeral Home, 91 Long Sands Road, York, Maine.
The Rev. David Avery, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Eliot, officiated.
In attendance were members of the church; the Kittery Fire Chief, with a contingent of members from the Kittery and Kittery Point Fire Departments; members of the Town of Eliot Republican Committee; representatives from the Berwick Academy Alumni Association; and Town of Eliot Police Chief, Al Boston.
Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Eliot, with committal prayers by the Rev. Avery. Honorary pallbearers were Kathlyn Miller, Joyce Oschlager, Laura Stark, Laurie White and Karen Valencia.
Jean E. Philbrick
PORTSMOUTH - Jean E. Philbrick, 70, of 3205 Hillcrest Estates, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999 at her home.
Born Jan. 13, 1929, in Patten, Maine, she was the daughter of the late LEster and Emma (Cunningham) Webster.
Mrs. Philbrick graduated from Patten Academy in Northern Maine. She moved to Houlton, Maine at the age of 18, living there for several years before moving to Hampton in 1964, where she resided until her 1989 move to Portsmouth.
Mrs. Philbrick was an employee for Liberty Mutual in Portsmouth for 12 years. She enjoyed traveling and was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She was the wife of Donald E. Philbrick for 53 years.
In addition to her husband, family members include two sons, Terence Philbrick of Hampton,and Jeffrey Philbrick of Eliot, Maine; four daughters, Virginia Carpenter of York, Maine, Pamela Pappalardo of york, Maine, Donna Minutelli of Newmarket, N.H. and Barbara Murphy of Eliot, Maine; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and one sister, Lois Pelkey of Patten.
She was predeceased by a son, Steven Philbrick, who died in 1969.
Joyce M. Morrissey
HAMPTON - Joyce M. (Murphy) Morrissey, 60, formerly of Manchester and Chelmsford, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, at her home after a battle with ovarian cancer.
Born Dec. 23, 1938, in Lowell, Mass., she was the daughter of Gertrude L. (White) Murphy of Exeter and the late John Murphy.
She held a managerial position for many years with Sears & Roebuck Inc. of Manchester. More recently, she worked with her husband in the family business, American Food Products of Methuen, Mass.
She was the wife of John J. Morrissey.
In addition to her husband and mother, survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Morrissey) Chase Reed of Manchester; a sister and brother-in-law, Louise A. and John Dutney of Princeton, N.J.; a niece, Kristen Dutney of Princeton, N.J.; three brothers-in-law and their wives, Kenneth and Guia Morrissey of Contoocook, N.H., Richard and Kathleen Morrissey of Cumberland, R.I., and Michael Morrissey of Groton, Mass.
She was predeceased by a son, John Jay Morrissey, who died in 1998.
Private services will be held at the convenience of family. Memorial donations in support of ovarian cancer research may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 1309 Beacon St., Brookline, MA 02446.
Louise W. Rifkin
PORTSMOUTH - Louise W. Rifkin, 88, of 188 Jones Ave., formerly of Rye, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born Dec. 23, 1910, she was the daughter of Gustav and Garnet (Pence) Whitehead.
She first moved to the Seacoast in 1955 with her husband while he was stationed at Pease Air Force Base. She returned to the area after her husband's retirement.
She was an accomplished writer and talented artist. She volunteered with the Guild of Strawbery Banke doing publicity for the Guild for many years.
She was the wife of the late Col. N.J. "Rif" Rifkin of the Air Force (retired).
She is survived by a niece, Pennie (Rifkin) Sherman of Olympia, Wash.; and a grandniece, Sarah Oliver of Poulesbo, Wash.
Beatrice L. Chalk
PORTSMOUTH - Beatrice L. Chalk, 86, of 20 Islington St., formerly of 210 Crescent Way, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999 after a short illness in New England Baptist Hospital, Boston, Mass.
Born Dec. 3, 1912 in Lawrence, Mass., she was the daughter of Guy and Esther Moulton Chalk.
She was an active member of the Kittery Point Baptist Church and enjoyed the outdoors, reading, traveling, crossword puzzles and the family cottage on Lake Winnipesaukee.
Beatrice was a longtime employee of Patterson & Getchell paint store in Portsmouth and was also employed by Winebaum News.
She is survived by her brothers, Richard and Aline Chalk of Sanford, Maine and Marshall Chalk of Bow, N.H.; a sister, Elizabeth Platts of West Newbury, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
M. Phoebe Thompson
KITTERY - Marion Phoebe Dunbar Thompson died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Norman H. Thompson; their son, Edward (Ted); and her brother, Walter C. Dunbar II.
She is survived by a son, Peter, his wife, Rosie, and their daughters, Kate and Emi; a son Richard, his wife, Melanie, and their daughter Malindi and sons Kelsey and Ryley; a son, William (Bill); grandchildren Melanie Thompson, Kristen Thompson Ising her husband, Herman and their sons, Corey and Erik; a grandson, Peter Erik Thompson, and his wife, Alison; their mother, Joan Smith Thompson MacCubbin and her husband, Tom; sisters-in-law Marjorie Thompson Allen and Jean Thompson Neily; a brother-in-law, Chick Neily; many nieces and nephews; and close family friend Lytle Eaton. Phoebe is also survived by the many loving caretakers who came to her home for the past 10 years and, since June, to Sentry Hill in York. They were a true blessing to her family, which is grateful to them.
Lewis R. Bickford
MILTON - Lewis R. Bickford, 70, formerly of 326 Thurston Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999 at the V.A. Hospital in Manchester, N.H., after a period of failing health.
Born June 30, 1929, in Farmington, N.H., he was the son of Charles and Florence (Connor) Bickford. He was educated in Somersworth schools and had resided in Rochester, N.H. for many years before moving to Milton.
He served in the Navy and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and gardening.
He had been employed for 35 years at Clarostat Mfg. in Dover, retiring in 1991.
He was the husband of the late Jeannette (Turcotte) Bickford. She died in 1969.
Survivors include three sons, David L. Bickford and his wife, Jennie, of Rye, N.H., Richard D. Bickford of Rochester, N.H., and Gary L. Bickford and his wife, Sandra, of Rochester, N.H.; 10 grandchildren, Ashley, Brad, Erica, Alex, Dana, Loren, Brett, and Jason Bickford, Monica Sirios and her husband, Steve, and Frank Beardsworth and his wife, Kim; two great-grandchildren, Heather and Christopher Beardsworth; four sisters, Charlotte Desroches of Rochester, N.H., Bertha Lacasse of Barrington, N.H., Kay Lambert of Somersworth, N.H. and Joyce Pay of Berwick, Maine; and nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Bruce, who died in 1998, and a brother, Charles Bickford.
Elvie V. Johnson
HAMPTON - The funeral for Elvie V. Johnson, 91, of 7 Dearborn Ave., was held Saturday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
The Rev. Mike Mulberry, pastor of the United Church of Christ in North Hampton, officiated. Sister Doris Ouellette, C.S.C, pastoral minister at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, offered the 23rd psalm.
Sylvia Moulton was organist.
Among those in attendance were members of the United Church of Christ and the North Hampton Women's Club.
Burial was in Center Cemetery, North Hampton, with the committal service conducted by the Rev. Mulberry.
Pallbearers were William Bowen, Michael Oiler, George Johnson, Lucien Foote, Richard Bley, Geoffrey Bley and Brad Johnson.
Elinor C. Rand
NEW CASTLE - Elinor C. Rand, 95, of 57 Ducks Head, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999 at the Mark H. Wentworth Home in Portsmouth.
Born Nov. 9, 1904, in Portsmouth, N.H., she was the daughter of Jedediah and Edith (Foss) Rand.
Before her retirement, she was employed for the Rye POst Office for more than 40 years, retiring as postmaster.
During World War II, she was an observer at Straw's Point. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed needlepoint, embroidering and especially rug hooking.
vSurvivors include two nieces, Ann P. Kent of New Castle and Eleanor P. McKenna of Exeter,; a nephew, Frank M. Pickering of Wilmington, Del., several grandnieces and grandnephews; and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Timothy J. Buckley
PORTSMOUTH - The funeral services for Timothy Justin Buckley, 83, of 737 Woodbury Ave., were held Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999.
A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church by Monsignor Lawrence Burns and the Rev. Michael Griffin. The funeral pall was placed on the casket by Sister Marion Feeney, Sheila Shea and Mr. Buckley's wife, Alice Buckley.
Readings were given by Rebecca Wylie and Sister M. Monica Markey. The Eucharistic gifts were presented by Betty Brown and Robert Wylie. The eulogy was delivered by Michael Wylie.
Pallbearers were John Justin Buckley, Michael Wylie, Kim Brown, Shawn Wylie, Douglas Lorenz and Fred Horvath.
Honorary bearers were members of the Fleet Reserve Branch No. 7 Eugene Hill, Troion Leeper and Gerald McLees.
Burial was in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery with Monsignor Burns conducting the committal.
Full military honors were provided at the cemetery by a detachment from Brunswick Naval Air Station. The flag was presented to his wife. Monsignor Burns offered prayers at the Farrell Funeral Home on Tuesday and the Fleet Reserve conducted services at the funeral home Tuesday under the direction of President Robert Pomella.
Joshua W. Stow
NEWMARKET - Joshua W. Stow, 24, of 33 Bay Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999 in Eliot, Maine.
Born Oct. 17, 1999, in Manchester, N.H., he was the son of Bette Stow.
Josh was a poet and a writer.
He is survived by his mother of Newmarket; his father, Jack Walker of South Berwick, Maine; his son, Myles Blue Rouselle of South Berwick, Maine; three sisters, Amber Walker of Exeter, N.H., Ariel Cvetanovich of Newmarket, N.H. and Linnaea Olivia Walker of Newmarket, N.H.; maternal grandmother Hilda Stow of Townsend, Mass.; maternal grandfather Richard Stow of Derry, N.H.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
Roger C. Grant
ELIOT - Roger C. Grant, 82, of 316 Goodwin Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 199 at York Hospital.
Born Feb. 4, 1917, in Crystal, Maine, he was the son of Norman and Phebe (Hersey) Grant.
Mr. Grant served four years in World War II as a corporal in the Pacific. He worked on the Navy Yard as a carpenter until he retired in 1971. Upon his retirement from the shipyard, he began his own construction business. In the last few years, he built furniture for family and friends and prided himself on cutting and splitting 20 cords of wood each year. Mr. Grant was a member of the First Baptist Church in Kittery Point and had served as a church deacon and Sunday School teacher. He enjoyed his family, many friends and spending time at his camp in Smyrna, Maine.
He was the husband of Anna Brooks Grant for 57 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Patricia Kennedy and her husband, Wesley, of South Berwick, Maine, Christine Costello of Amesbury, Mass. and Lebanon, Maine and Janis Mayo and her husband, Robert, of Tucson, Ariz. and Wells, Maine; five grandchildren, Wendy Ralph and her husband, William, of Acton, Mass., Jennifer Marchi and her husband, Chip, of Milton, Mass., Rachel Costello of Amesbury, Mass., Shannon Pizzimenti and her husband, Paul, of Kittery and Ian Grace of Maine; a great-granddaughter, Catherine Brooks Ralph of Acton, Mass.; three brothers, Paul and Donald Grant of Kittery Point, Maine and Norman Grant Jr. of Island Falls, Maine; two sisters, Letha Currie and her husband, Cecil, of Eliot, Maine and Marjorie Reitz and her husband, Bill, of California; and two special cousins, Phyllis Willette of Houlton, Maine and Charlotte Porter of Cape Elizabeth, Maine.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Harry, Carl, Kenneth and David Grant; three sisters, Helen Lindsey, Doris Maine and Freda Lynch; and one son-in-law, James Costello.
