Grace E. Piscopo
Grace E. Piscopo, 66, of Bonnybriar Road in South Portland, died on Nov. 18, at a Portland hospital after a brief illness.
She was born in New Paltz, N.Y., Linda Steinhilber of Pine Bush, N.H., a son of John Joseph and M. Louisa Sullivan Campbell, attended schools in Berlin and South Portland, and graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, the Boston University School of Religious Education, the Boston University Graduate School of Boston and the Andover Newton Theological School of Newton, Mass.
He was an ordained minister in the Congregational Church.
He was pastor emeritus at the Blue Point Congregational Church in Scarborough.
A granddaughter from South Portland died in 1999.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Blake Campbell; two sons, John A. of Maiden, N.C., and Robert E. of Biddeford; two daughters, Carol M. O'Brien of Scarborough and Jane E. MacIntyre of Mansfield, Mass.; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Francis Cook, 69
Francis Cook died Saturday, April 15 at Springbrook, where he was recovering from a stroke suffered in January. He was a long time resident of South Portland.
He was born June 21, 1936 to Philip L. and Mildred Tibbetts Cook and grew up in the West End neighborhood in Portland. He graduated from West School and Deering High School in 1954, and married Patricia Gorman Cook.
He worked for 30 years at Greyhound Bus Lines. After retiring, he bought Kettle Cove Takeout & Dairy bar in Cape Elizabeth, where he enjoyed making his own ice-cream and experimenting with new flavors. He enjoyed many hours in the kitchen with his staff of high school and college kids.
His life revolved around his children and his grandchildren. He spent his time at athletic events, school concerts and dance recitals. He could often be seen sneaking one of his grandchildren into Burger King for French fries while chauffeuring them to one of their many activities. He was a voracious reader and a huge movie fan – an endless repository of movie trivia and historical facts.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brothers Al Cook of Standish and Buddy (Phil) Cook of Boothbay and survived by his wife of 51 years, Patricia, daughters Joanne Damicis and husband James of Scarborough, Lynn Shryock and husband Bob of Scarborough, Cheryl Mardin and husband Tim of Rye, NH and son Dana Cook and wife Beth of Deerfield, NH. He is also survived by sisters-in-law Betty Cook of Standish, Judy Cook of Boothbay, and Joan Pask and husband Albert of Richardson, Maine, 04092 or, St. John Food Cupboard, 29 Aspen Avenue, South Portland, Maine, 04101.
William J. Bennett Jr.
William J. Bennett Jr. 77, of South Portland died Tuesday November 14 at the D’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston.
William was born in South Portland, the son of William J. and Carrie “Sergeant” Bennett Sr., he was educated in the South Portland schools. In the 1960’s he served in the National Guard until his honorable discharge. He worked for the City of South Portland as a Heavy Equipment Operator for 27 years until his retirement.
Mr. Bennett was a former resident of 425 Broadway in South Portland.
Survivors include his brother Robert Bennett of Scarborough, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
The family would like to recognize the tender loving care given by the 2nd floor East staff at the D’Youville Pavilion during his stay. Arrangements made by the Hobbs Funeral Home 230 Cottage Road South Portland, Maine Central Railroad after 38 years.
He was a soft-spoken, thoughtful person and the neighborhood children loved playing basketball at “Brown’s Court.”
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Virginia (Kiley) Brown, daughters Carol Wing and Larry of Portland, Sally Conant of Brunswick, Cathy Pesce and Steve of Westbrook, sons Charles Brown and Anne of South Portland, Richard “Ditchie” Brown and Tammy of Naples, Howard Brown of South Portland, 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Lillian M. Bagley
Lillian M. Bagley, 93 of Portland, and formerly of Starboard Drive, Cape Elizabeth, died November 26 at Portland’s Seaside Nursing Home.
Lillian was born in South Portland, February 17, 1913, the only daughter of Daniel Evan and Emma Frances Apt MacCormack. Upon the death of her mother, she was raised by her Aunt Pearl and Uncle Galen Twitchell in Willard Square. She graduated from South Portland High School Class with the of 1932 and Portland’s N.Y.; four grandchildren: Allyson June and her husband Steve Dame of West Poland, Sally Jean Laskey of Harrisburg, Penn., Seth Bagley and his wife, Diane and Jay Philip Bagley and his wife, Sue all of Livonia; five great-grandchildren, Dana, Alicia, Anita, Adam and Colin; and one great-great-grandson Darnell, and many nieces and nephews of whom she was proud.
She was predeceased by her brother Leaman Ellery MacCormack and his son, half sisters and brothers; Virginia, Edward, Richard, Marion, Joan; all of her sisters and brothers-in-law and special friends, the Mitchells, The Bud Murrays, the R. Jordans and Alta Curtis.
Funeral arrangements were made by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland. In lieu of flowers, mourners may make a contribution to your favorite charity or scholarship or to the Alzheimer’s Assoc., Maine, Orono with a BA degree in Chemistry. While attending Orono he was a member of the Beta Eta Chapter of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity as was his father and uncles. After graduation, he was employed by chemical laboratories in Maine to join his father’s engineering and survey business. Donald then went on to obtain his auto-cad license and his surveying license. He also worked for L.L. Bean during their holiday season for the past three years.
Donald loved baseball and football and collected cards of each since a young age. His main interest was golf and was a member of the SPHS and UMO golf teams. His greatest accomplishment in golf was competing in the yearly club championship at the Purpoodock Golf Course.
His is survived by his parents Herbert and Jacqueline Gray, sister Kimberly Rutherford, brother-in-law Sean Rutherford and nephews Matthew and Nathan, aunt aunts and cousins. He will be sadly missed by those who loved him dearly.

He served in the United States Navy during WWII where he met his wife Jean Logan, who was a Navy Wave. He later served in the Korean War.
He resided in South Portland for the greater part of his life until his retirement in 1983. He finally settled in Rotondo West, Maine to be closer to his family.
Dr. Dorsey was a member of the Maine. His many interests included Civil War history, carpentry, reciting poetry, rooting for the Red Sox, and, until recently, hitting the open road and making friends near and far.
He was honored at the May meeting of Portland Marine Society for 53 years of active membership and past presidency. Other memberships include The Harbor Museum and USM Retirees.
Captain Locke was predeceased by his brother, Brigadier General Donald N. Locke (British Army) He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Phyllis Locke of Cape Elizabeth; two daughters and their husbands: Patricia Locke and Thomas Mascetta of Lincoln and Susan and James Rubens of Etna, Maine Community College, South Portland, Me. 04106. William P. Quigley
William P. Quigley Sr. of South Portland, Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.
He was born on July 15, 1927 in Medford, Massachusetts and served in the Marine Corps during WW II and was recalled and served during the Korean Conflict. Upon discharge he attended Northeastern University. He married Evelyn Minkle of Medford, Maine.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Evelyn L. Quigley of South Portland, his five sons, Mark Quigley of Modesto, Maine Special Olympics. Special Olympics Thompson Murphy. She attended the East Millinocket schools and graduated from Houlton High School. Shortly thereafter she moved to Florida, Nephew Carlton Cotton and wife Jane of South Portland along with several great nieces and nephews.
Arrangements made by Hobbs Funeral Home 230 Cottage Road South Portland. Burial will be in the spring at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
Ruth Ellen Ricchi
Ruth Ellen Ricchi, 57, of Cape Elizabeth, passed away February 1 at Massachusetts where she got her Bachelors degree in sociology.
Ruthie and her husband Bob spent many winters vacationing in Maine and received his Bachelor degree in Industrial Technology in 1980.
Galen was a devoted family man keeping his family together and beside him through most of his travels in his service career, sometimes taking two jobs to support them. He especially loved his grandchildren’s company, sometimes taking on the roll of father and friend.
He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley A.(Hatch) Arey in 1998. Surviving are his four daughters; Gayl A. Johnson and her husband Dennis of Gray, Gina L. Huff of South Portland, Diana L. Roberts and her husband Chris of Gorham, Sue A. Arey-Thurston and husband Steve of South Portland; a sister, Juanita A. Sylvia of Westbrook, two nephews: Maine Medical Center in 1954 and ran the department until his retirement in 1975. The department still exists today as the Department of Audio/Visual Resources.
Mac was always involved in his family’s activities. He coached and umpired while his two oldest sons were involved in Farm League and Little League baseball.
In 1964 he became an Assistant Scoutmaster in the Boy Scout Troop 24 in South Portland. He became Scoutmaster in 1966 and remained so until 1970. During that period he affected the lives of many young men with a very active outdoor camping program that included winter wilderness survival training. Personally, he achieved Brotherhood rank in the Boy Scout’s Order of the Arrow and on a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico he climbed 18,000-foot Mt. Baldy at the age of 60.
The whole family was constantly involved in myriad outdoor activities including swimming, diving, downhill and cross-country skiing, and especially, hiking. There were very few mountains in New England that had not seen the MacKenzie clan trooping over their peaks.
A champion diver in his youth he encouraged three of his sons to pursue the sport of gymnastics while in high school. Two of them went on to become State Gymnastics Champions. He spent many years judging high school gymnastics throughout the state.
In 1969 he and Judy purchased a small island in Muscongus Bay on the coast of Massachusetts. He married Ruth McGrath in 1988, settling in the North Shore. He worked for 12 years as an Electro-Mechanical Assembler at Imtran Industries, in Newburyport, Mass. and later switched careers to become a Customer Service Representative first for Eastern Bank in 1997 and BankNorth in 1999.
He and his wife came to Nobleboro in 2002 and at the time of his death he was employed as a PT Scheduler and patient registrationist at Miles Hospital. A much sought after drummer, David played for Waldo Theater productions, in Waldoboro and enjoyed jamming with other area musicians. After many years of playing, David filled a dream and like his mentor, began giving lessons, which he was also busy with at the time of his death. David greatly enjoyed hiking, fishing and boating. He was one of the Boston Bruins most ardent fans and most enjoyed the eccentricities of his close friends and family.
David leaves his wife of Nobleboro and his parents of Wenham, Mass. He also leaves his daughter Coreen McGrath of Danville, NH; two brothers, Donald G. Barker and his wife Linda of Wenham, Mass; Robert R. and his wife Mary of Rowley, Mass; 2 grandchildren, Amanda McGrath and Lilly Teal. Other survivors include his aunt Sylvia of Benton, Ark., uncles Ralph of Jacksonville, Fla. and Russell of Orange, Cal., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Calling hours will be 2-4 and 6-8, Jan. 14, at the Lee, Moody and Russell Funeral Home, Beverly, Mass., where his service will be 11 a.m. Jan. 15, with Rev. Ann Abernethy officiating. Arrangements are under the care of the Strong Funeral Home and Memorial Center, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
Shotzberger, Patricia
Aug. 14, 1934 - July 26, 2004
Patricia Arlene Meeker Shotzberger, 69, of Bremen, passed away July 26 after a courageous battle with COPD, with her loving husband by her side.
Patricia was born on Aug. 14, 1934 in Glendale, W.Va. the daughter of Waldo Emerson and Helen Angle Meeker. After high school, she got a job with the family dentist, Van K. Heely and worked there until she married Rev. Charles E. Shotzberger on Jan. 22, 1977. They moved to New York.
They later moved to York where she worked for a dentist in Portsmouth, N.Y.; step children, Sandra L. Lewis of Old Orchard Beach, Julia A. Dotter of Beacon, N.Y.; brother, Richard P. Meeker of Portsmouth, Va.; aunts, Agnes A. Sindlinger of New City, Ohio, Betty Meeker of Ashville, N.C.; 13 grandchildren, two nieces and several cousins
Memorial service at 1 p.m. Wed., Aug. 4 at the West Waldoboro Community Church with Rev. Michael Murphy officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pat’s name may be made to the American Lung Association of Maine, died Sept. 18, at his home in Southport and was laid to rest with his daughter at the Castine Cemetery, Sept. 22.
