Edith V. Bet
DERRY - Edith Violet Betz, 95, formerly of 3 Wood Road, Derry died Sunday Dec. 12, 1999 at Birchwood Nursing Home.
Born March 10, 1904, in St. Sylvester, Province of Quebec, she was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Pearson-Machell. She attended high school in Marbleton, P.Q.
A fancy stitcher, she worked at the Continental Shoe Co. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, the Church of the Transfiguration in Derry, American Legion Auxiliary of Kittery, Life & Past Master Kittery Grange, Pomona, State, National Grange, Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 for 50 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Life member World War I Widows Association - past president Rebekahs. She also lived in Kittery for 56 years.
She was the wife of the late Frederick "Fritz" Betz. He died in 1960.
She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ralph (Shirley E.) Skillin of Derry and Mrs. John (Dorothy Mae) Barry of Cumberland, R.I.; a son, Allen F. and his wife Constance Betz of Portland; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Ethel Leclerc, Gwen Turner and Elsie Chase and a brother, Arthur Machell.
Theda I. Coberly
PORTSMOUTH - The funeral for Theda I. Coberly, 68, of 120 Lafayette Road, Rye, was held Sunday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home, Hampton.
Services were held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bishop David Smart presided and Dell Fox conducted. The organist was Thelma Remick and the chorister was Rosemary Smart. The eulogy was offered by Jeff Slocum and a reading was offered by Cindy House. Words of remembrance were offered by Mrs. Coberly's daughter, Linda Bilodeau.
A violin concerto, "Pachelbel's Canon in D," was offered by Teresa Carr, Abigail Carr and Angela Gong. Julie Hales offered the closing prayer.
Spring interment will be in the Valley Cemetery, Greene, Maine.
Richard L. Durgin
BARRINGTON, Ill. - Richard L. Durgin, 73, died recently at home after a long battle with cancer.
Born Feb. 19, 1926, in York, he was the son of Harold L. and the late Sarah (Norton) Durgin of Kittery. He graduated with honors from Portsmouth High School, and was a 1947 graduate of the University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y., with a bachelors' degree in mechanical engineering.
He spent his entire career in the manufacturing industry, retiring in 1986 as vice president of Household International Manufacturing Division in Chicago.
In addition to his father, survivors include two sons, Richard and Harold; a daughter, Deborah Fazio, all of Chicago, a sister, Ann Blake of Kittery; two brothers, Clayton of York, and Neil of Williston, Vt.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Marilyn Francois
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Marilyn Margaret (Maxwell) Francois, 54, formerly of Portsmouth, died unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 3, 1999.
Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of John and Rose Maxwell and attended St. Patrick School and Portsmouth High School.
She enjoyed bowling, cooking, quilting, gardening, bingo and the holidays and was loving to all her friends.
She was the wife of George "Butch" Francois of Portsmouth.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two daughters, LIsa Riccio of Houston, and Colleen Malloy of Portsmouth; a stepson, George "Butchie" Francois of Portsmouth; six brothers and sisters, Rosemary Santos and her husband, Stephen, of Portsmouth, Glen Maxwell of Peabody, Mass., John "Jay" Maxwell, Tom Maxwell and his wife, Sandy, Brian Maxwell and his wife, Fanchion, and Erin Borden and her husband, Curtis, all of West Palm Beach; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Ralph Noveletsky
GREENLAND - Ralph Noveletsky, 77, of Greenland and Gloucester, Mass., died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999 at Portsmouth Regional Hospital following a brief illness.
Born and raised in Malden, Mass., he was a former resident of Lynn. He also had a residence in Gloucester, where he resided during the summer.
He served in Merrill's Marauders during World War II.
In 1957, he founded Novel Iron Co., after making iron railings for a number of years. His first assignment was providing steel for the crucifix for the "Madonna" at Don Orione home in East Boston.
His company was involved with providing steel for many projects, including the Charles Hotel in Boston and the Mall of New Hampshire, Fox Run Mall, North Shore Mall and Pheasant Lane Mall.
He was involved with the Malden Hospital, Central Fellsway Co-operative Bank, Malden Kiwanis and Mt. Scopus Lodge of Masons.
He was the husband of Judi (Loomis).
In addition to his wife, family members include his daughters, Leila Noveletsky and Hollie Noveletsky-Rosenthal; a sister, Irene Polner; a brother, Arthur Noveletsky; and a grandson Joshua Rosenthal.
Agnes L. Tripp
YORK - Agnes Lamkin Tripp, 94, of Old Post Road (formerly of Davis Court in Wilton, N.H.), died Saturday, Dec. 11, 1999, at her home after a brief period of illness.
Born in Wilton, she was the daughter of Frank and Mattie Furbush Lamkin and was a graduate of Wilton Academy.
She was the first woman to attend Williams Oil-o-matic School in Illinois and ran an oil burner repair business with her husband.
She enjoyed spending time in her family, rug braiding, and gardening.
She attended the York Methodist Church, and braided rugs for the York Beach Fire Station.
She was the wife of the late Erland Tripp. He died in 1979.
Survivors include a daughter, Frances Tripp Gale of York; a granddaughter, Christal Gile of Durham; two grandsons, Corey and Daniel Gile of York; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Henry W. Large
BLUE BELL, Pa. - Henry W. Large, 94, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at his home.
Born in 1905, he was orphaned at a young age. He attended Lawrenceville School and was a 1928 graduate of Princeton University.
During World War II, he was the flight deck commander on the aircraft carrier Shangri-la, which was stationed in the Pacific Ocean.
He then began his railroad career, advancing to become vice president of traffic of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1949. In 1964, he moved to St. Louis to become president of Wabash Railroad. While in St. Louis, he served as a trustee for the First National Bank in St. Louis. He returned to Pennsylvania Railroad, where he served as executive vice president before retiring in 1970.
He was a vestry member and accounting warden at St. Thomas' Church in Whitemarsh, Pa. He also served on the vestry at St. Andrews by the Sea in Rye.
He was a member of the First City Troop, The Philadelphia Club, Sunnybrook Golf Club, and The Rabbit in Philadelphia, the Chicago Club, and the Princeton Club in Chicago, the Missouri Athletic Club, St. Louis Country Club, Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, and the Abenaqui Club in Rye.
He was the husband of Emily Norris Large for 67 years.
In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, Henry W., eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, John B. Large; and a daughter, Emily N. (Bitsy) Carey.
A service and burial was held at St. Thomas Church, Whitemarsh, on Monday, Dec. 13.
Mae B. Drew
EXETER - Funeral services for Mae Bryce Drew, 89, of 4 Alumni Drive, were held from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth, with graveside services in the First Parish Cemetery, York.
The Rev. Reva Karstens, interim minister of North Congregational Church, Portsmouth, officiated. Gayle Torla played the bagpipes.
Pallbearers were Kevin Norwak, Bryan Drew, Conrad McKinney and Jay Goldsmith.
Richard S. Brooks
BARRINGTON - Richard Stanley Brooks, 73, of 192 Beauty Hill Road, died at his home Friday, Dec. 10, 1999, following a brief period of illness.
Born Nov. 26, 1926, in Medford, Mass., he was the son of the late Ernest P. and Mildred (Jollymore) Brooks. He was a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, with an associates' degree in applied science.
He worked as a planner and estimator for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 114.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He was the treasurer of the Great Bay Singles Club, the Amateur Radio Association, a member of the Military Radio Service of N.H., Maine and Vt., and the assistant director of the N.H. Snowmobilers Association.
Survivors include a son, Keith P. Brooks of Rochester; three daughters, Karen L. Buehne of South Berwick, Kim Riley and Kathy J. Philbrick, both of Rochester; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Brooks of Clawson, Mich.
M. Louise Goss
HAMPTON - The funeral for M. Louise Goss, 88, of North Hampton, was held Tuesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
Graveside services were conducted in Center Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Mulberry, pastor of the United Church of Christ, officiated.
Mildred E. LaForge
HAMPTON - The funeral for Mildred E. LaForge, 73, of Woodland, Calif., formerly of Hampton, was held Wednesday from the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home.
Graveside services were conducted in High Street Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel Sinibaldi, associate pastor at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, officiated.
Anastasia Davis
ROCHESTER, N.H. - Anastasia "Ann" Davis, 85, of 230 North Main St., died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at SunBridge Nursing Home after a period of failing health.
Born Oct. 9, 1914, in Raymond, N.H., she was the daughter of the late Costas and Stavrula (Papaleirzou) Constantopolous. For the past 55 years, she had resided in Rochester.
She worked as a waitress for the Rochester Hotel, Wagon Wheel Restaurant and the NCO Club at Pease Air Force Base. She also worked at local shoe factories, including Hubbard and Rochester Shoe.
She attended Trinity Anglican Church of Rochester.
She enjoyed plants, gardening, sewing and spending time with her family.
She was the wife of the late Francis Davis, who died in 1995.
Survivors include a son, Martin Ferland of Rochester, N.H.; a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jeraldine) Clough of South Berwick, Maine; four grandchildren, Melissa Nordaby of Somersworth, N.H., Richard W. Clough II of Saco, Maine, Matthew Ferland of Hooksett, N.H., and Zebulon G.H. Clough of Rollinsford, N.H.; one great-granddaughter, Laska Nordaby of Somersworth, N.H.; two brothers, George Constance of California and Pat Constance of Dover, N.H.; a sister, Dee Potter of Newport, R.I.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers and two sisters.
Edward G. Christoph
EXETER - The funeral for Edward G. Christoph, 81, of Brentwood, was held Wednesday from the Stockbridge Funeral Home, Exeter. Services were held at Phillips Church, Exeter.
The Revs. Robert H. Thompson and Steven D. Bartell officiated. Thomas Handle was organist and Jennifer Christoph was pianist. The Rev. Thompson, Laurence Aimee Birnbaum and Evelyn Christoph were soloists. Words of remembrance were offered by Christoph David Birnbaum, Henry Christoph and Evelyn Christoph and Mark Trafton.
Burial followed in Exeter Cemetery with committal service by the Revs. Thompson and Bartell. Pallbearers were William Birnbaum, Geoffrey Christoph, Mark Trafton and Christoph Birnbaum.
Christopher W. Corbett
PORTSMOUTH - Christopher W. Corbett, 32, of Portsmouth, formerly of Exeter and Gloucester, Mass., died suddenly Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999.
Born Feb. 20, 1967, in Boston, he was the son of Janet M. (Bell) Corbett and her partner Catherine Wharton Trembick of Gloucester, Mass., and his late father James Patrick Corbett.
Survivors include his former wife, Gayle (Lee) Corbett of Exeter; a daughter, Elizabeth Corbett of Exeter; a son, Benjamin Corbett of Exeter; an uncle, Douglas Bell and his wife Beth of Winthrop, Mass.; an aunt, Carol Hart of Bradenton, Fla.; several cousins; several devoted friends, Mr. and Mrs. Brian Light of Brentwood, Gram, Bob Y., Todd Y., Tim L., Diane, George, Chris W., Paul, Harold, Todd, Chris, Tom, John, Bobby, Tammy and Amber. Special thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Scott Flanders, Salvation Army Corps, 15 Middle St. Portsmouth.
