Cecelia W. Morse
ELIOT - Mrs. Cecelia "Sis" W. Morse, 74, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at York Hospital.
Born March 23, 1925, in Kittery, she was the daughter of Maurice and Marion (Harrigan) Langley. She graduated from Eliot High School, Class of 1943, and Western Union Business School.
In 1985, she retired as a postal clerk from the Eliot Post Office after 30 years of service.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Eliot; Golden Sheaf member and past master of John F. Hill Grange No. 393; York Pomona No. 14; life member Piscataqua Chapter No. 90 OES; Eliot Alumni Association; and the Eliot Historical Society.
She served on the Eliot and SAD 35 school board between 1959 and 1975; the Eliot Budget Committee; Eliot Charter Commission 1985; and York Assembly No. 23 IORG Advisory Board. She was a co-group leader for the Eliot Group, organizing bus tours since 1975.
She was the wife of the late Roland S. Morse Jr., who died in June 1997.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret A. Morse of Eliot and Mrs. James E. (Diane A.) Miller of Mechanicsville, Md.; two grandchildren, Katherine and David Miller of Mechanicsville, Md.; and a brother, Ralph O. Langley of Eliot; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Marshall E. Parker
KITTERY - Marshall E. Parker, 83, of 93 Old Dennett Road, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Sentry Hill in York.
Born Oct. 10, 1916, in Groveland, Mass., he was the son of the late Harold W. and Alice M. (Pendleton) Parker.
After graduating from Groveland High School in 1934, he entered the apprentice program at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard; he retired from the Planning and Estimating Department in 1971.
He was a member of North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.
He was the husband of the late Annie W. (Haynes) Parker.
Survivors include two daughters, June Parker of Kittery, and Karlene Arnold and her husband, David, of Kittery; two grandchildren, D. Scott Arnold and Elizabeth J. Arnold, both of Kittery; a brother, William Parker of Jackson, Calif.; an aunt, Esther Hartford of Rye; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Myron Parker and Allen Parker, and a sister, Mildred Mormando.
Margaret P. Seavey
PORTSMOUTH - Margaret P. (Pinkham) Seavey, 88, of 581 Colonial Drive, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born June 5, 1911, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Ezra and Windelina (de Rochemont) Pinkham. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School.
She attended North Congregational Church in Portsmouth.
She had been employed as a waitress at Yoken's in Portsmouth, Warren's in Kittery, and Howard Johnson's in Portsmouth.
She was the wife of Clifton S. Seavey.
In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Carolyn (Seavey) Lind and her husband, Paul, of Hutchinson, Minn.; two grandsons, Darin Lind of Wheeling, Ill., and Adam Lind of Minneapolis, a sister, Myrtle Frost of Portsmouth; and a sister-in-law, Anne Richards of Haverhill, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen M. Dowd
PORTSMOUTH - Helen M. Dowd, 66, of 20 Islington St., died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital after an extended illness.
Born April 24, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Irene M. (Martell) Thomson. She was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth except for a two-year stay in Germany. She was a 1951 graduate of Portsmouth High School.
She was a past employee of First National Bank of Portsmouth, Newberry's, and a school bus driver for Jancar Transportation.
She was an avid cook and had a keen interest in antique furniture. She loved being a mother and grandmother.
Survivors include a son, Buddy Dowd and wife, Elizabeth, of Rye; a daughter, Diane Dowd-Werry and husband, Andrew Werry, of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Caitlin and Thomas Dowd, and Douglas Werry; two sisters, Carol Ireland and Betsy Thomson of Portsmouth; a brother, Robert Thomson of Portsmouth; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Joseph Jr., John, and Richard Thomson; and a sister, Irene Mary Larin.
Eva M. Giustini
PORTSMOUTH - Eva M. Giustini, 100, a resident of the Edgewood Centre where she lived for the past 16 years, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999.
Born June 27, 1899, in Burlington, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Edward and Dora (Beaudry) Maynard. She was an 80-year resident of Portsmouth, having worked in the city of Portsmouth during the '50s and '60s.
On her 100th birthday, Mayor Evelyn Sirrell issued a proclamation honoring Eva for her faithful service to the city.
She was the wife of the late Nick Giustini.
She has no living relatives. She leaves her longtime friend, Theresa Hickey.
She was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Lena Thibeault.
Arnold D. Davis
YORK - Arnold D. Davis, 77, of 34 Southside Road, died shortly after arrival at York Hospital on Friday, Dec. 24, 1999.
Born in South Berwick, Maine, on Feb. 6, 1922, he was the son of Frederick L. and Florence Darvill Davis. He graduated from Berwick Academy.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force as a sergeant.
He worked as a foreman at the Prime Tanning Co. prior to his retirement in 1984.
A resident of York for the past 48 years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and cross country skiing.
He was the husband of Eleanor Taylor Davis, whom he married Nov. 18, 1950.
In addition to his wife, survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Steven (Cheryl) Emery of Eliot, Mrs. Scott (Karen) Ahl of South Lebanon, Maine, Mrs. William (Robyn) Clithero, Mrs. Jeffrey (Cindy) Donnell and Mrs. Kenneth (Kimberly) Donnell, all of York; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Robert (Marcia) Hio of Tuolumne, Calif.; a brother, Leonard Davis and his wife, Shirley, of Andover, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Eleanor Brown and Lida Shaw, and two brothers, Frank and Frederick Davis.
Ruth R. Smith
YORK - Ruth R. Smith, 76, of Beech Ridge Road, died in her sleep at home on Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Sanford, Maine, on Nov. 24, 1923, she was the daughter of Fred and Delvina (Perreault) Shaw. She graduated from Portsmouth High School.
During World War II she worked as a clerk at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After several other jobs she spent 13 years employed at Porteous Mitchell and Braun in Newington as a sales clerk.
In 1986 she and her husband retired to Clearwater, Fla., for 12 years before returning to Maine.
A member of Central Baptist Church of Portsmouth for several years, she was also a member of First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks, Fla.
She and her husband enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed shopping and the beaches in Maine and Florida.
She was married to Galen W. Smith for 50 years. In addition to her husband, survivors include a daughter, Pam Smith Rowan; four grandchildren, Jocelyn, Nate, Jenna and Seth Rowan; two sisters, Doreen Gross of York, and Elsie Hall of Dover; one brother, Fred Shaw of Scarborough, Maine; and several nieces and nephews.
Kenneth H. Giles
YORK BEACH - Kenneth H. Giles, 56, of 76 Nubble Road, died unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at his residence.
Born July 14, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of Harvey and Madonna (Conn) Giles. He was a 1961 graduate of Plum High School in Plumboro, Pa.
He had formerly resided in Southboro, Mass., for four years before moving to York many years ago. For several years he was a real estate developer in the York area. He owned and operated the Highland Links Golf and Tennis Club, which he established in 1993.
An avid golfer, he also had his private pilot's license and enjoyed flying from Sanford Airport.
He was the husband of Lillian (Vanasse) Giles of York Beach.
In addition to his wife, survivors include three sons, Todd S. Giles of Worcester, Mass., Tracy D. Giles of Reading, Mass., and Scott Sherman of Boston; a daughter, Elise Sherman of Kittery Point; a granddaughter, Claudia Giles of Reading; and two sisters, Betty Harvat of Verona, Pa., and Sharon Verzinski of Plumboro.
John E. Coleman Sr.
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for John E. "Eddie" Coleman Sr., 80, of 275 Kearsarge Way, were held Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Buckminster Chapel. The Rev. David McCarthy, pastor of the Advent Christian Church, officiated.
In attendance was a large delegation of the Portsmouth Police Department, headed by Chief Bradley Russ, and retired Police Department employees.
The funeral procession was escorted to the cemetery by Sgt. Tim Brownell and Officer Russell Russo. Burial was in Sagamore Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by the Rev. McCarthy.
The Honor Guard headed by Chief Russ included Deputy Chief Michael Magnant, Detective Kevin Semprini, Detective Steve Arnold, Auxiliary Officer John Connors and Auxiliary Officer Ed Levesque.
Under the direction of Officer Richard Brabozon, a volley was fired by Detective Steve Dubois, Officer Earl Case and Officer Darrin Sargent.
Taps was sounded by Ted Blood.
The American flag was presented by Chief Russ to the son of the deceased, Robert Coleman.
Pallbearers were Capt. Adam Price, Capt. William Irving, Lt. John Yerardi, Lt. Bob Carbone, Sgt. Mike Schwartz and Detective Mark Newport.
Leon W. Hightower
HAMPTON - The funeral for Leon W. Hightower, 51, of 45 Anne Ave., Portsmouth, was held Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home. The Rev. Jamie Moynahan, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Exeter, officiated. Full military honors were accorded by the U.S. Navy honor guard from the Brunswick Naval Air Station, Brunswick, Maine.
The flag that draped the casket was folded and presented to the widow of the deceased, Bonnie A. Hightower. Cremation followed in the Phoenix Crematory, Hampton.
Elmer R. Littlefield
NORTH HAMPTON - Elmer R. Littlefield, 73, of 203 Lafayette Road, North Hampton, formerly of Danvers and West Peabody, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999 at home following a long illness.
Born in Newfield, Maine, son of the late Leslie and Pauline (Layne) Littlefield, he received his education in the Newfield and Saco school systems. He resided in West Peabody and Danvers prior to moving to North Hampton earlier this year.
An honorably discharged veteran, he served his country as a Navy Sea Bee in the Guano Canal in Guam, the Asiatic Pacific, during WW II.
He had been self employed for many years as a carpenter in the North Shore area until the time of his retirement. He was a member of the Richard Mitchell American Legion Post No. 51 in Epping. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener and loved traveling.
He was married for 26 years.
He is also survived by a daughter, Janet Kilgore and her husband Colin of Somersworth; a son, Ralph and his wife Sherrica Littlefield of Georgia; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Hartwell of Lee; one stepdaughter, Lynn LeBlanc of North Hampton; two stepsons, Albert Maynard of West Peabody and Gary Maynard of Middleton; and several nieces and nephews.
Louis F. Sampson
SEABROOK - Funeral services for Louis F. Sampson, 78, of 45 Walton Road, were held Tuesday at the Remick & Gendron Funeral Home in Hampton. The Rev. John Folley, pastor of the East Parish United Methodist Church of Salisbury, Mass., officiated. Jean Goss was organist.
Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Seabrook, with committal services by the Rev. Folley. The United States flag, which rested on the casket, was presented to Mr. Sampson's daughter, Candice L. Drew.
Masonic services were conducted at the funeral home on Monday evening by St. James Lodge 102 F&AM of Hampton, with over 50 masons in attendance. Veterans' services followed and were conducted by Hampton American Legion Post No. 35.
Shawn A. Wilcox
PORTSMOUTH - Funeral services for Shawn A. Wilcox, 39, of 3205 Lafayette Road, were held from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth on Monday with graveside services held at Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth. The Rev. Agapit H. Jean Jr., pastor, of St. James Church, Portsmouth, officiated.
In attendance were representatives from BPOE No. 97 in Portsmouth, representatives from Sons of the American Legion Squadron 6 and the Creek AC.
Bearers were Mark Westgate, Ralph Wilcox, Michael Wilcox, Justin Wilcox, Edward Wilcox and Jason Wilcox.
SAL services were held Sunday evening at the chapel by Richard Brooks, Gene Schmitz, Mike Richard, Bob Houle, Drew Hogan and George McConnaghy.
