Helen M. Dowd
Funeral services for Helen M. (Thomson) Dowd, 66, of 20 Islington St., were held from Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth on Tuesday with a Mass of Christian burial celebrated at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Portsmouth.
Msgr. Lawrence Burns, pastor, officiated. David Palumbo was altar server. Organist was Maureen Sheehan and soloist was Aurelio Dominguez. In attendance were communicants of the church.
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Msgr. Burns. Bagpiper was Douglas Cals. Bearers were Jim Thomson, Michael Ireland, Artwill Larin, Thomas Larin and Richard Ireland. Mrs. Dowd was survived by her former husband and friend, Oliver Haskell "Cal" Dowd.
Margaret P. Seavey
PORTSMOUTH - Private funeral services for Margaret P. (Pinkham) Seavey, 88, of 581 Colonial Drive, were held at Buckminster Chapel, Portsmouth yesterday. The Rev. Reva Karstens, interim pastor of the North Congregational Church, officiated. Burial was in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, with committal services by Rev. Karstens. Bearers were Paul Lind and Bill Knight.
Mary C. Knowlton
DOVER - Mary C. Knowlton, 85, former longtime resident of 41 Westwood Circle, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at the Mark Wentworth Home, Portsmouth, where she had resided since July 1998.
Born Nov. 7, 1914, in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Collins) Flahive. She was a graduate of Portsmouth High School and Portsmouth Teachers Training School.
She was a homemaker and did substitute teaching in the Portsmouth area. She also was a bookkeeper at Dover Motor Mart, a business owned and operated by her late husband, Norvin F. Knowlton, who died Oct. 24, 1977.
She was active in Cub Scouts and Brownies when her children were young. She did volunteer work at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after the death of her husband. She was also a communicant of St. Joseph Church.
Survivors include two sons, James E. Knowlton of Sherman, Texas and N. Paul Knowlton of Berlin, Germany; a daughter, Patricia A. Bertrand of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Jeffrey Bertrand of Portsmouth, Brian M. Bertrand of Eliot, and Lara N. Knowlton of New York City; two great-grandchildren, Adam J. and Devon M. Bertrand of Eliot at Portsmouth.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Edward, John and Thomas Flahive.
John H. Taylor
TAYLOR - Joan H. Taylor, 63, of U.S. Route 1, a former longtime resident of Ogunquit, died on Dec. 21, 1999. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 31 at the First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church in Kennebunk, with Rev. Judith Smith-Valley officiating. Should friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the Marlee Animal Shelter, PO Box 552, North Berwick, ME 03906, in Mrs. Taylor's memory.
J. Clinton Stevens
KINGSTON - J. Clinton Stevens, 77, of Webster Landing, formerly of Brentwood, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, in Exeter Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 21, 1922, in Brentwood, he was the son of the late John W. and Lena (Gove) Stevens. He was a 1942 graduate of the University of New Hampshire Thompson School.
He was co-owner and operator of Stevens Dairy of Brentwood.
He was very active in Brentwood, serving on the Fire Department, School Board, Board of Adjustment and Zoning Board.
He was a charter member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Brentwood/Kingston, where he served on many different committees and was instrumental in the joining of Brentwood Congregational Church and Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Kingston.
He also served on various farming-related committees.
He is survived by his wife, Betty (Morrow) Stevens of Kingston; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bruce and Maria Stevens, Bradley Stevens, and John and Julie Stevens, all of Brentwood; a daughter and her husband, Jerrian Stevens and Rick Hartmann of Greenland; nine grandchildren; five brothers, Arthur G. Stevens of Barrington, Richard S. Stevens of Kingston, Walter E. Stevens of Nottingham, Robert Stevens of Contoocook and Herbert Stevens of Brentwood; a brother-in-law, William Morrow of Ft. Meyers, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one sister, Marjorie Stevens Prina.
Louis P. McKenna
PORTSMOUTH - Louis Paul McKenna, 84, of 188 Lincoln Ave. died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Sunbridge Nursing Home, Exeter, after several years of failing health.
Born April 5, 1915, in Dover, she was the son of John and Honor (Axworthy) McKenna.
He was a 1933 graduate of Dover High School, where he was a standout football player. He also did a great deal of boxing in his youth and was a member of Ring 38 in Dover.
He was employed for many years with the Water Department for the City of Portsmouth, retiring in 1971.
A resident of Portsmouth for the past 59 years, he was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Knights of Columbus Council No. 140, and St. Mary's Assembly Fourth Degree.
He was the husband of Eunice (Watkins) McKenna for 59 years.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Paul McKenna and his wife Susan of Dover; two grandchildren, Timothy and Theresa; three sisters, Esther Gage, Mary Bickford and Margaret Arsenault, all of Dover; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, George and John McKenna, and two sisters, Ethel Howard and Grace O'Brien.
Frances E. Rubino
YORK HARBOR - Frances Emma Rubino, 82, of Eureka Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 28, at York Hospital.
Born October 2, 1917, in New York City, she was the daughter of Michael and Maria (Caruso) Scarpelli. She was a graduate of the Needle Trade School in Bronx, N.Y.
She had worked for many years as a seamstress. Mrs. Rubino had also been employed by the New York Board of Education as a School Aide.
She had resided in New York City for many years before coming to York Harbor in 1979. Mrs. Rubino was a communicant of St. Christopher's Church in York and had been a member of the Women's Federation League. She was also a member of the York Senior Center, the Golden Age Club of Portsmouth, and a member of the AARP.
She enjoyed working with her computer and also enjoyed playing bingo.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Rubino, who died in 1998 and by her sister Mabel Scarpelli who died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Frederick M. Rubino of Kittery; three sisters, Maria "Mildred" Introcaso of Crestwood, N.Y., Marie Percopo of Benton, Wash., and Mitzi Virgilio of Hyde Park, N.Y.; and two grandsons.
Jesse L. McGee
MAYSVILLE, Ga. - Jesse L. McGee, 69, of 422 Panhandle Circle, died Friday, Dec. 24, 1999, at Athens Hospital (Athens, Ga.,) after an extended period of illness.
Born Dec. 9, 1930, in Oscilla, Ga., he was one of seven children of the late Jesse B. and Rosa L. (Jones) McGee. He lived many years in Portsmouth, working for Iafolla Industries, before relocating to Orlando, Fla. He had lived with his family in Maysville for the last 20 years.
He was the husband of Mavis B. (Howard) for 48 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three brothers, Leroy R. of Plymouth, Fla., Odis A. of Newington, and Herman E. of Portsmouth; two sisters, Emma P. Purvis of Oscilla, Ga., and Jewelene of Broxton, Ga.; two sons, Jesse E. of Maysville, and Johny L. of Orlando; three daughters, Sandra E. Orozco of Kenly N.C., Janice L. Arredondo of Maysville, and Rosaline M. Bibby of Maysville; and 20 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Samuel L.; a sister, Hazel M.; and a son, Odis E.
Ann Rollins Hallett
DOVER - Ann Rollins Hallett, 86, formerly of Three Rivers Farm, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999 at the Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center after a period of failing health from Parkinson's Disease.
Born in Dover Sept. 17, 1913, the daughter of Ashton and Gladys (Brown) Rollins, she lived in Dover most of her life. She was a graduate of the Beaver County Day School and Garland Junior College of Boston.
Mrs. Hallett was a member of the City Club of Boston, the Colonial Dames, the Guild of Strawbery Banke, the Cocheco Country Club and the York Farm and Garden.
She was an excellent golfer and avid horseback rider, having won many ribbons. She was a gardener and enjoyed cooking and knitting.
The widow of Lucius Felt Hallett Jr., who died in 1984. She is survived by a son, Lucius F. Hallett III of Dover; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elizabeth Rollins Creelman of Dover and Nancy Rollins Chandler of Wolfeboro; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son, Ashton Rollins Hallett, who died in 1997.
Kenneth G. Palmer Sr.
NOTTINGHAM - Kenneth G. "Flicker" Palmer Sr., 74, of Sherwood Lane, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at Dover Rehabilitation & Living Center, Dover.
Born March 6, 1925, in Newmarket, he was the son of Frank B. and Bessie (Winslow) Palmer.
Raised in Newmarket, he lived in Exeter for 20 years before moving to Nottingham in 1970.
He retired from the University of New Hampshire, where he worked as a lab technician. After his retirement he worked part time at Riverside Nursing Home, Dover.
He was well-known for the wooden clocks he made.
Survivors include his wife, Della E. (Tyler) Palmer of Dover; a son, Kenneth G. Palmer Jr. of Portsmouth; two grandsons, David K. Palmer of Portsmouth and Christopher J. Palmer of Portland, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews.
Frederic T. Hildred
RAYMOND - Frederic T. Hildred, 54, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Cambridge, Mass. and was a resident of Methuen prior to moving to Raymond four years ago.
He served with the Army during the Vietnam War.
He had been employed with the Gillette Corporation in Andover for the past 20 years. He was a member of Bethany Masonic Lodge of Merrimac, Mass. and VFW Post No. 4479 of Raymond.
He was a devoted husband, father and friend. He loved riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family and friends. He fought his cancer until the end with dignity and strength. He will be sadly missed by all.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. (Turmel) Hildred.
Other survivors include his sons, Frederic T. Hildred, Jr. of Salem and Harley D. Hildred of Raymond; daughters, Laura Hildred of Reading, Mass., and Stephanie Ferrier and her husband Andrew Bolduc of Methuen, Mass; his father, Loring R. Hildred of Merrimac, Mass.; a brother, Loring R. Hildred, Jr. of Aniston, Ala.; sisters, Carole and her husband James Stephens of Dracut, Mass., Virginia Sargent of Haverhill, Jacqueline and her husband Victor Silva of Newton; one grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Norma M. Chomack
GREENLAND - Norma M. Chomack, 76, of 78 Portsmouth Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital.
Born July 2, 1923, in Gloucester, Mass., she was the daughter of Fred and Gladys (Dickinson) Tarbox. She had resided on the Seacoast since 1948.
For many years, she was employed as a sales manager at the former Kimball's Department Store in Portsmouth.
She was the wife of Alexander Chomack for 52 years.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two brothers, Fred Tarbox Jr. and Robert Tarbox, both of Gloucester, Mass.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Louise C. Chomack, in 1961.
