Orsland H. Whitney, age 71, died May 24, 1999 at Gladwin Pines Nursing Home in Gladwin, following a short illness. He was born December 1, 1927 in Bay City. Mr. Whitney lived in Kawkawlin until moving to Gladwin County in 1974. He served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean Conflict; was a job setter for General Motors Powertrain in Bay City. On October 25, 1947 in Bay City, he married Elizabeth VanHorn. She survives him along with a daughter, Cindy Gittins of Kawkawlin; granddaughter, Michelle Gittins of Kawkawlin; special nephew, Raymond Manyen of Kawkawlin; special nieces, Suzann and Carol Manyen of Bay City; a sister, Mabel Jankowski, Bay City; and sisters- in-law: Viola Wright, Eva Whitney, Audrey and Frank Barkley and Martha Hill; a brother-in-law, Elmer Schankel; and several nieces and nephews. Passed away Wednesday, May 26, 1999 at home, age 35 years. He was born September 5, 1963 in Highland Park. Robert Wietecha married the former Michelle Fales May 15, 1993 in Mackinaw City. He has been an area resident for the past 23 years. He was an avid fisherman. Survivors are wife, Michelle; one stepson, Brian York; parents: Dorothy Kucera of Sterling and John Wietecha Jr. of Westland; two brothers: John Wietecha III and Kenneth Wietecha of Westland; one sister, Amy Hosted of Sterling; one niece, Lyndsay and one nephew, Steven; and grandfather, Steven Kucera. Mrs. Beyer, age 79 years, died May 27, 1999 at Bay Special Care Center. She was born in Bay City on June 24, 1919. She married Leonard A. Beyer in 1940 and he preceded her in death on August 3, 1987. Together with her husband, she farmed in Merritt Twp. She is survived by five children: Lillian (James) Glumm, Donald (Mary Ann) Beyer, James (Beverly) Beyer and Lindalee (Ned) Doyen, all of Bay City and Leonard Beyer Jr. of Au Gres; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lillian Russell and a brother, Allen Russell. Funeral Service will be Saturday at 11 A.M. at Penzien & Steele Funeral Home. Mrs. Helsel, age 66 years, a homemaker, of Glennie, MI, died Thursday, May 27, 1999 at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was born on April 14, 1933 in Steele, Missouri to Cletis and Pauline (Danley) Harrison. She was a member of the Glennie United Methodist Church. She is survived by her sons: Robert (Donna) Helsel of Maine, Mark (Cherri) Helsel of Pinckney, MI, Cletis Helsel and fiancee', Kim of Farmington, MI; daughter, Deborah (Mark) Craig of Redford, MI; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters: Carol (Bill) Mishark of Georgia, Janel (Ernest) Poteat of Georgia and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Helsel in 1993, and brother, Wenton Harrison. Visitation will take place on Friday, May 28, 1999 from 2 to 9:00 P.M. at the Frizzell Funeral Home in Hale, MI. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, May 29, 1999 at the funeral home with the Rev. George Morse officiating. Interment will follow at the Glennie Cemetery in Glennie, MI. Alma Evangeline (Whaler) Hewson, age 90, of West Branch, MI, died May 27, 1999 at her home. She was born in Empire, the Canal Zone, Panama, on March 5, 1909. Her parents were John William and Julia Adele (Stocks) Whaler. She married Richard Charles Hewson in Washington, DC. She is survived by a son, Richard (Marion) of Loveland, CO and three daughters: Ann (George) Bray of West Branch, Alice (Donald) Schulz of Okemos, MI and Amy (James) Wooley of Charition, IA; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Alma was a graduate of Wilson Teacher's College, Washington, DC and Central Michigan University. She taught in the West Branch-Rose City Area Schools for many years and her students will always remember her as a caring and loving teacher. Her activities included Past President of the West Branch Library Board, served on the vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church, Girl Scout leader, Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star, a member of Zion Chapter, and involved in Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, a grandson, Dr. George William Bray, her three sisters, Elizabeth, Ione and Annabel, and her brother, George Whaler. Visitation will be Saturday, May 29, 1999 from 1:00-4:00 P.M., Sunday from 1:00 to 9:00 P.M. at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch. He is survived by one brother, John; sisters: Rose Pihaylic, Elizabeth Soehner, Mary Koin and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Bohmil. Fredelien (Fred) Saladine, age 89, of Alger, passed away Thursday at the West Branch Regional Medical Center. He had lived in Alger since 1945. Mr. Saladine is survived by his wife, Lila of Alger; children: Fred (Patty) Saladine and Clifford (Grace) Saladine, both of Bay City, Juanita (Elmer) Smith of Saginaw, Angela (Jerry) Hamilton of St. Helen, Theresa (Henry) Leverenz of Alger and Doris (Steve) Ritchie of Gladwin; 19 grandchildren; 32 great- grandchildren; and eight great- great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, LeRoy, two daughters, Charlotte Heoppner and Mary Ann Tiltman. The family will receive friends at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch on Sunday evening from 6-9 P.M. and on Monday from 12-9 P.M. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 A.M.
