Werth, Carl A.
Bay City, Michigan
Mr. Werth, age 89 years, died May 27, 1999 at his home. He was born in Bay City February 10, 1910, the son of Albert and Caroline (Koch) Werth. He is survived by his wife, the former Dorothy Johnson, whom he married May 20, 1939. He also leaves two children: Thomas D. (Jeanne) Werth and Sandra Hunt Alcorn, both of Bay City; five grandchildren: Steven Hunt, Kim (Jerry) Stevens, Cindi Hunt, Leah Werth and Emily Werth; three great-grandchildren: Steven Hunt Jr., Stephanie Hunt and J.J. Stevens; and a sister, Caroline Boucher of Bay City. Mr. Werth was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was the retired co-owner of Werth and Haddad Decorating Co., retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Michigan National guard and was a Captain in the Michigan State Troops. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Mr. Werth was a member of Bay City Lodge No. 88 B.P.O.E. Funeral and Committal Service will be Monday at 11 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Leslie D. Tyvela and Vicar Steven Maske will officiate. Entombment will be at Floral Gardens Mausoleum. Memorial tributes may be made to the American Cancer Society, Heartland Hospice or a charity of the donor's choice. Visiting hours will be Saturday from 7 to 9 P.M. and Sunday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 P.M. at Penzien & Steele Funeral Home. He will lie in state at the church on Monday from 10 A.M. until service. Buck, Russell L.
Freeland, Michigan
Passed away May 28, 1999 at his home in Freeland after a brief illness. Age 76 years. Russell was born December 20, 1922 in Saginaw, MI to the late Arthur Lloyd and Bertha (Acker) Buck and has resided in this area all of his life. Russell was a member of the Freeland United Methodist Church and served on its board. He operated the family dairy farm for 20 years. He started with Gleaner Life Insurance Society in 1960. He purchased his father's casualty insurance agency in 1962 and semi retired in 1986. He was a charter member of the Freeland Lion's Club and 4-H leader for 20 years. He served on the Board of Directors for Gleaner Life Insurance Society and Freeland State Bank. He was a trustee on the Freeland School Board, and was active in many community service organizations. On September 1, 1944 he married Dorothy M. Tyler, she survives him. Also surviving are four children: David R. Buck of Traverse City, Ken (Tammy) Buck, Nancy Buck and Joyce Buck, all of Freeland; four grandchildren: Brian and his wife, Mary, Amber, Amanda and Elisabeth; one great-granddaughter, Anna; one sister, Marion (Louie) Emmendorfer of Freeland and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday, May 31, 1999 at Freeland United Methodist Church in Freeland. Rev. James Rule and Pastor Donald Rice will officiate with burial in Pine Grove Cemetery in Freeland. Friends may call at the Cunningham- Taylor Funeral Home, 310 E. Washington, Freeland on Saturday from 7:00-9:00 P.M.; Sunday from 2:00-5:00 and 7:00- 9:00 P.M. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. Morley, Helen L.

Mrs. Morley, age 81 years, passed away Friday, May 28, 1999 at Bay Medical Center. She was born in St. Cloud, MN on September 20, 1917 to the late Michael and Anna (VanDenberg) Zins. She was a member of Peoples Baptist Church. Survivors include seven children: Nancy (James) Crofoot of Kawkawlin, Roy Houghtaling of Bay City, Charles Houghtaling of Bay City, Jack (Cheryl) Morley of Bay City, Sam (Gwen) Morley of Bay City, Helen (Ray) Lamb of Kawkawlin and Jean (Thomas) Dupree of Homer, MI; 36 grandchildren; 71 great- grandchildren and eight great- great-grandchildren; two sisters: Anna Lesnick and Mary Fahrner and two brothers: Nick (Delores) Zins and Ed (Marge) Zins. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Bernard Houghtaling and Omer Morley as well as a daughter, Mary Ann Bonsor. Funeral and Committal Services will be on Monday at 11:00 A.M. at Peoples Baptist Church. Rev. Daniel R. Hester will officiate. Cremation will follow. Friends may call at Penzien & Steele Funeral Home on Saturday from 6-9 P.M. and Sunday from 2-5 and 7-9 P.M. Mrs. Morley will lie in state at the church on Monday from 10 A.M. until service time. Eldon S. Rice, age 49 of Bentley, formerly of Sterling, passed away May 27, 1999. Mr. Rice is survived by his wife Phyllis; children: Eldon Rice II, Jason Rice and Heidi Rice, all of Bentley; his mother Genevieve Rice; brother Glen (Debra) Rice; sister Susan Helms and sister-in- law Paula Rice, all of Bay City and sister Genevieve (Duane) Mayer of Defiance, OH. He was preceded in death by daughter Melissa Rice; father Clarence and brother Clarence II. The family will receive friends at the Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Home in West Branch on Sunday from 1-9 PM. Mr. Thorpe passed away suddenly Saturday morning, May 29, 1999 at Bay Medical Center. Age 63. The son of the late Thomas and Gladys Thorpe was born March 10, 1936 in Detroit, MI. Fred formerly operated Tom Thorpe's Bar in Linwood and retired from the Bay County Sheriff's Dept. He is survived by his wife Shirley M.; five children and spouses: Jeanne (Kevin) Zuchnik of Midland, MI, Thomas (Jill) Thorpe of Mustang, OK, Carolyn (Scott) Kopka of Pinconning, MI, Cheryl (Heath) Curtis of Pinconning, MI and Suzie (Michael) Russell of Midland, MI; his grandchildren: Patrick and Lauren Zuchnik, Kayle and Jamie Thorpe and Garrett Russell and two sisters, Shirley (Ray) Bodwin of Reno, NV and Marylou (Ed) Staszak of Kawkawlin, MI. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and tentatively planned for Wednesday morning; the arrangements will be published in Monday's edition. Guire, Eva R.

Eva R. Guire, age 96 years, passed away Saturday morning, May 29, 1999 at the Bay Medical Care Facility, following a lingering illness. The daughter of Valentine and Marcella Urban was born in Parisville, Michigan on August 28, 1902. Mrs. Guire lived most of her lifetime in Bay City. She was a former employee of Michigan Bell Telephone Company. Mrs. Guire was a member of St. Mary Church, a fifty-year member of the Daughters of Isabella, Bishop Gallagher Circle 605 and a lifetime member of the League of Catholic Women and Men. The former Eva Urban was married to Isadore Guire on September 9, 1924. They were married for 64 years. He died on August 12, 1988. Surviving are two daughters, Lorraine Russell and her husband Arthur of Essexville, Betty Lipan and her husband James of Bay City; ten grandchildren: Rick Russell of California, Michael (Debra) Russell, Michele (James) Kirsch, all of Essexville, Patrick Russell of Bay City, William (Carol) Lipan, Connie (William) Nemode, Paula Reinshuttle, all of Bay City, Robert (Rene') Lipan of Holland, Brian (Tammy) Lipan of Bay City and Mary Beth (David) Gielda of Bay City; 24 great- grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law Leona Mahoney of Essexville; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Guire has five deceased brothers and four deceased sisters. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock in St. Mary Church. Rev. Fr. James G. Heller will preside. Rite of Committal will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. The Daughters of Isabella will pray the Rosary Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Parish Wake Service will be Tuesday evening at 7:30 o'clock. Both services will be at the funeral home. Friends may call at Stapish West on Sunday between the hours of 5 and 9 o'clock and on Monday between the hours of 2 and 9 o'clock.
