Mr. Lyon died on 3/7/2000. He was born on 7/6/1917 in Traverse City, MI. Mr. Lyon retired from Michigan Bell Telephone Co. after 40 years of service. He was an active member of Tawas area United Methodist Church, cooking for church breakfasts and dinners and serving on the Board of Deacons. He was a volunteer fireman in Standish, a volunteer with the Tawas St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, and worked with the American Cancer Society for over 35 years, serving as Chairman of Special Events for 5 years, served in the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Leader for many years and eventually as Vice President of the Paul Bunyon Council receiving Scouting's highest honor, the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Kiwanis in Tawas and served as President of the Kiwanis Clubs in Standish and Oscoda, MI. Mr. Lyon belonged to the many Masonic organizations beginning in 1937, with memberships in the Traverse City, Standish, Tawas area, Oscoda, and Alpena. He was Mason of the Year in both Standish and Tawas Lodges, District Mason of the Year for Tawas Lodge, was an active member of Royal Arch Masons and is Past High Priest and Life Member, with D.D.I. Emeritus, Gold Honor Award, and the General Grand Chapter Meritorious Service Award for Michigan. The Royal Arch Masons International awarded Bill the Bronze Medal for the State of Michigan. He was also a member of the Saginaw Council #20 Royal & Select Masons, Sunrise Commandry Knights Templar, NE College #16 Midland Sovereign York Rite of North America, Ionic Council #251 Allied Masonic Degrees, Valley of Bay City Consistory, the NE Michigan Scottish Rite Club, High 12 Club, Alpha Shrine, White Shrine, and has worked with the youth in Job's Daughters and DeMolay. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie Willsey Lyon; their 2 children: Kenneth W. Lyon (Carol) and Marcia Lyon Phares (Andy); 4 grandchildren: Kevin Lyon (Genifer Meeker), Rita Lyon Wilkins (Scott), Stephanie Phares Stoliker (Jason) and Kathryn Phares Daniel (Jeffrey); 4 great- granddaughters; a sister Mary VanConant; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl and Anna Lyon and a brother, Jack Lyon. He lived a life of love and dedication to his family, church, and community, and was a real hero to his children and grandchildren. There will be a Memorial Service at the Tawas United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 11, 2000, at 1:00 PM. Donations may be made to Hospice or the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Cook died early Sunday morning, March 12, 2000 at the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center in Saginaw. Age 77 years. The son of the late John and Georgina (Spowart) Cook, James was born in Danville, IL on July 10, 1922. He served with the U.S. Army during WWII as a Sergeant with the 784th MP Battalion. James was an electrician at United Welders and was past-President of Local Union #5555. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. James is survived by his wife of 54 years, Laurene (Sorgatz) Cook; two children: Brian (Pamela) Cook of Ada, MI and Betsy (Cuyler) Cervantes of Bay City; six grandchildren: Christopher, Emily, Holly and Weston Cook and Xavier and Alejandro Cervantes; two sisters: Mary Gutoski of New York and Janet (Arthur) Barba of New Smyrna Beach, FL; three sisters-in-law: Vera Wiley of Midland and Martha McMullen of Essexville and Ruth Sorgatz of Saginaw; several nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will take place Thursday, March 16, 2000 at 11:00 A.M. at Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. Rev. Leslie D. Tyvela will officiate followed by Military Honors by the Bay County Veterans Council. Inurnment will be in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Dorothy Rose Rook Cunningham, age 74 years of Sebewaing, Michigan and Key Largo, Florida, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2000 at Miami Baptist Hospital, Miami, Florida. She was born in Sebewaing on July 25, 1925 the daughter of Alfred and Margaret Schulz Gaeth. Mrs. Cunningham was united in marriage to Arthur Rook and to Allan Cunningham; both predeceased her in death. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing, its Womens Bible Study, the Lutheran Womens Missionary League, the V.F.W. Auxiliary, the Garden Club and Silver Belles of Silver Shores, Key Largo, Florida. Surviving are a son, Douglas (Patricia) Rook of Huntington Beach, California, daughters, Anita (Gordon) Mueller of Bay City and Elyse Rook of Grand Blanc; grandchildren: Julie Ann Fisher and Rachel Mueller, both of Bay City; a sister, Marylyn Otto of Bonita Springs, Florida, along with many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends in Sebewaing and Key Largo. She was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond Gaeth. Funeral Services will be from Immanuel Lutheran Church, Sebewaing at 11 o'clock Wednesday morning, March 15, 2000 with Rev. Albert Bahr officiating. Interment will be in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be at Unionville Funeral Chapel on Tuesday where the family will be present between the hours of 2 o'clock and 9 o'clock. Mrs. Cunningham will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 10 o'clock until the time of service. Keyser, Dale

Dale Keyser, age 75 of Midland, former Delta College professor, passed away Saturday, March 11, 2000 at Mid-Michigan Medical Center. Dale Franklin Keyser was born March 8, 1925 in Saginaw to the late August and Cassie Keyser. He graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 until 1946. He then enrolled at Central Michigan University where he received a BS degree in 1950. His career as a business teacher began at Wallen Lake High School and from there he came to Midland, where he taught at Midland High School from 1951 until 1964, except for one year (1955-1956) when he taught at Michigan State University. In 1964, Mr. Keyser began teaching at Delta College, was chairman of the business division for nine years, retiring in 1985. From the University of Michigan, he received MA (1954) and Phd (1976) degrees, and in 1979, a textbook he co-authored "Effective Communication in Business" was published. Dr. Keyser has served as secretary, treasurer, vice- president and president of the Michigan Business Education Association and received the MBEA Distinguished Service Award in 1970. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and has served as president of the Midland Civitan Club. On August 20, 1955, Dale married Alma Puterbaugh in Midland. Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons and their wives: Dale A. (Patti) of Saginaw, Richard (Lisa) of Richmond, VA and David (Laurie) of Midland; one brother and sister-in-law, Raymond (Kathleen) of Lake George; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Lois Stevens. Dale enjoyed teaching, using his computer, spending time at his cottage on Lake George, and traveling in his motorhome, but his children and his grandchildren were the greatest joy of his life. The Funeral Service will take place at 11 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2000 in First Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles Keyworth will officiate. Interment will follow at 2 P.M. in Oakwood Cemetery in Saginaw. Marie L. LaPlaunt, age 86 years, died Saturday evening, March 11, 2000 in Bay Medical Center. She was born to the late John and Rose Mohar on July 23, 1913 in Cheboygan, MI and had been a resident of Cheboygan for most of her life. On November 18, 1931, the former Marie Mohar married Cecil LaPlaunt in Cheboygan and he preceded her in death on June 2, 1979. Surviving family members include her three children: Rosemarie (Al) Lukos of Barefoot Bay, FL, Suzanne Tromble of Cheboygan and Judy (John) Kelley of Essexville; eight grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren. Marie was preceded in death by her two sisters, Rose McGurn and Anne Chevalier and her brother, John Mohar. As per Marie's wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or service at the W. A. Trahan Funeral Chapel. In July, a Memorial Service will be held in St. Mary's/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan with intermenty following in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cheboygan. Melvin J. Porter, age 90 years, of Six Lakes, passed away Friday, March 10, 2000 at Kelsey Memorial Hospital in Lakeview. He was born October 12, 1909 in Onaway, MI to William S. and Edna B. Misner Porter. He was a member of the New Life United Methodist Church in Lakeview, and a foundry worker for 50 years at various places. He was also a member of the Six Lakes Lions Club. He was preceded in death by two wives, Leta Ione Porter in 1979, Mary Hathoway, a granddaughter, Karen Renae in 1958, two sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Shelly D'Angelo Porter of Six Lakes, whom he married March 6, 1993 in Six Lakes; two daughters, Lillian Edna and Roger Hudson of Alma, Sharon Elaine and Allan Hooper of Linwood; stepchildren: David D'Angelo of Howell, Galen and Sonia D'Angelo of Howell and Daniel and Victoria D'Angelo of Ft. Wayne, Indiana; a sister-in-law, Esther Porter of Mt. Pleasant and Texas; nine grandchildren; one step- grandchild; 20 great- grandchildren and one great- great-granddaughter. Services will be on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at New Life United Methodist Church in Lakeview with Pastor Larry Brown officiating. Arlene L. Rauschert, age 85 of Mt. Morris, was taken to her heavenly home on Monday, March 6, 2000 at Heartland Manor after a lengthy illness. Arlene Lydia Nitschke was born August 19, 1914 in Bay County, Michigan, the daughter of Rudolph and Margaret (Kolb) Nitschke. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in 1928. She married Edwin Otto Rauschert August 8, 1936. The couple moved to the Flint area, residing in Mt. Morris until 1992. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Davison. Arlene was a devoted wife and mother and also enjoyed baking and traveling. Surviving are husband, Edwin of Crestmont Center in Fenton; daughter, Joyce and Husband, Donald Lehman of Davison; two grandsons, John Lehman of Royal Oak and Paul Lehman of Davison; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Adeline, brother, Edwin and many dear friends and relatives. Funeral Service will take place 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2000 at the Miles Martin Funeral Home. Pastor Randy Schultz will officiate with burial in Flint Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 P.M.
