Dennis 'Denny' Shaw
Retired as deputy from sheriff's department
Dennis "Denny" E. Shaw, 63, Spring Lake resident died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at his home.
He was born July 19, 1939 to Elmo O. and Anna A. L. (Johnson) Shaw in Muskegon, and married Patricia Kastelin on Oct. 27, 1961, in Grand Rapids.
Denny served in the United States Air Force, was a journeyman in the sheet metal fabrication industry and a deputy with the Ottawa County Sheriff Department, retiring in 1996. Upon his retirement Denny continued his career in law enforcement as the Ordinance Enforcement Officer for Spring Lake Township and most recently Grand Haven Township. He also served as Court Officer for the 58th District and 20th Circuit Courts.
He was an active member of the American Legion-Charles A. Conklin Post 28, serving as the Commander in 1993-94.
He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was an avid fan of antique tractors.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Grand Haven, and was a 1958 graduate of Grand Haven High School.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 41 years, Pat; his sons, Daniel R. (Cathy) and Mark A. (Susan) both of Grand Haven, David R. of Spring Lake and James R. of Nunica; six grandchildren; a brother, John W. (Ruth) of San Antonio, Texas, and a sister, Dorann E. (Paul) Bellah of Chandler, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Spring Lake.
A funeral service for Mr. Shaw will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Phillip Baerwolf officiating. Friends may meet the family from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake. Private interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
Mae Watson
Enjoyed gardening and outdoor life
Mae A. Watson, 80, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002 at a local hospital.
She was born in Caspian on May 17, 1922 to Herbert and Floy (Harrington) Clark and married Kenneth Watson on Oct. 15, 1955, he preceded her in death on Nov. 6, 1997.
Mrs. Watson had been employed as a supervisor at General Electric in Holland. She enjoyed gardening, outdoor life and bird feeding .
Survivors include stepson, Kenneth (Dolores) Watson Jr. of Grand Haven; stepdaughter, Susan (Ken) Klop of Montague; eight step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce (Don) Parolari of Frankenmuth; Vivian (Virgil) Branyan of Muskegon and Gladys King of Iron River; two brothers, Chester (Joan) Clark of Carlsbad, N.M. and Hugh (Irene) Clark of Lander, Wyo.
Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers and three sisters.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Grand Haven.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Mae Watson, 80, will be held Monday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m. at Clock Funeral Home with Rev. David Bailey officiating. Interment at Lakeshore Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials: American Lung Association.
Jerome Birchmeier
Retired from GTE after 30 years
Jerome Joseph Birchmeier, 56, of Fruitport died Monday, July 29, 2002.
He was born in Owosso on July 20, 1946 to Herbert and Albina (Ebenhoeh) Birchmeier and married the former Dianne Olson on Oct. 12, 1974 in Muskegon.
Mr. Birchmeier was a 1968 graduate of Central Michigan University and was employed by GTE as an industry relations manager for 30 years prior to retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Spring Lake, Fruitport Lions, Muskegon Knights of Columbus and Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Mr. Birchmeier was a honorary member of the Telecommunications Association of Michigan. He was an avid golfer, fisherman and camper.
Survivors include his wife, Dianne; two sons, Grant and Kyle of Fruitport; mother-in-law, Winnifred Olson of Muskegon; two sisters, Mary (Ron) Sensabaugh Clark of Whitehall and Maxine (Dale) Wenzlick of Montrose; one brother, Vincent (Joyce) Birchmeier of Chesaning and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Fruitport.
A service for Mr. Jerome Birchmeier will be held on Friday, Aug. 2 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Fr. Anthony Vainavicz officiating. Interment at Norton Cemetery. Visitation will be held today from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Clock Funeral Home of Fruitport. Memorials may to made to the Fruitport Lions Club or Hospice of Muskegon-Oceana.
Elsie Wrobel
Elsie Christina Wrobel, 88, died Monday, July 29, 2002. According to her wishes, there will be no service or visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community. Arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Fruitport.
Barbara Donnelly
Barbara Donnelly, 69, died July 26, 2002 in Huntington, W.V.
She was born Jan. 10, 1933 in Muskegon to Dr. Andrew J. and Valeria J. Donnelly.
Survivors include one sister, Sister Andrea (Kay) Donnelly, a Pallottine Missionary Sister in Huntington, W.V., one brother, James Gregory Donnelly of Grand Rapids; one uncle, Fritz Tetalaff of Muskegon and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Andrew Donnelly.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Young Funeral Home of Muskegon.
The funeral Mass for Barbara J. Donnelly will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 114 Prospect, Spring Lake with Fr. Anthony Vainavicz officiating. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery in Muskegon. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday with the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. by the Serra Club.
Donald Van Raalte
Donald Van Raalte, 64, a Spring Lake native, died on Thursday, July 25, 2002 in Belding.
Mr. Van Raalte is survived by his son, Scott and daughter, Tammy Husted; sisters Esther Eckhout of Davisburg and Ruth Barrett of Grand Rapids; brothers Louis (Avis) of Grand Haven, Darwin of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carl (Joyce) of Muskegon and Harold (Paula) of Scottville.
Van Raalte was preceded in death by his brother, Dick and sister, Margaret.
Services were held Monday at Sytsema Funeral Home in Muskegon.
Daniel Paas
Avid hunter and fisherman
Daniel C. Paas, 54, of Norton Shores died Saturday, July 27, 2002.
He was born March 17, 1948 to Charles and Alice S. (Schultz) Paas in Grand Haven.
He was a lifelong area resident and had been a tool and die maker for the former Dama Tool Company of Grand Haven.
He had been an avid hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include his sister, Shirley Ann (Mike) Davis, Whitleyville, Tenn.; brother, Robert (Gerrie) Peters, Lake Odessa; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Rita and Ken DeCan, Norton Shores.
His parents Charles and Alice Paas preceded him in death.
Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Spring Lake.
A funeral service for Daniel C. Paas will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Spring Lake Wesleyan Church with Rev. Dennis Jackson officiating. Friends may meet the family at church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery.
