Mable A. Keen
BARODA - Mable Arlene Keen, 84, of Baroda passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at Jordan's Life Care Center, Bridgman.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Lakeside United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Lawton officiating. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association or Lakeside United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Keen was born Oct. 4, 1924, in Berrien Center. She was employed for a number of years as a cook at River Valley High School. Mable and her husband cared for many foster children. She was a longtime member of Lakeside United Methodist Church and was active in its ministries.
Survivors include a son, Todd (Mercedies) Keen of LaPorte, Ind.; a daughter, Cheryl (Ted) Seal of Baroda; four grandsons and one granddaughter.
Mable was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Keen.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman.
James T. Masterson
ST. JOSEPH - James T. Masterson, 77, of St. Joseph passed away suddenly on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 12, at Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Pastor Rick Blumenburg will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the funeral home. Burial with military rites will take place at North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Memorial contributions may be made either to Hospice at Home-St. Joseph or to the Berrien County Cancer Service. Messages of sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.starks-menchinger.com.
James was born on March 11, 1932, to Elijah and Zula (Usery) Masterson in Kennett, Mo. James served his country in the Air Force during the Korean War. He retired after 38 years of faithful service to Michigan Bell Telephone Company. He married the love of his life, Teruko on Nov. 28, 1954, in Tokyo, Japan. Together, they raised four daughters, Linda, Kathy, Teresa, and Joy. He loved to bowl, golf and collect stamps. Most of all, James cherished his family and friends.
James is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Teruko (Misawa) Masterson; his daughters, Linda (Kraig) Smith of Oldsmar, Fla., Kathy (Mitch) Fanti of Granger, Ind., Teresa (Manfred) Gerstenkorn of St. Joseph and Joy (Ken) Carr of Gardnerville, Nev.; brothers and sister, Wayne (Dottie) Masterson of Bridgman, Bobbie (Carol) Masterson of St. Joseph, Patricia (Bob) Spear of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Alissa, Lindsey, Tessa, Michael, Megan, Jennifer, Jason, Juliann, Mika and Miranda; five great-grandchildren, Alexi, Jacob, Mikayla, Teriana and Joshua; sister-in-law, Reiko Henry; many nieces and nephews and close friends.
He was preceded in death by his brother, David Masterson; a sister, Martha Henry; granddaughter, Jennifer Smith; great-granddaughter, Tessia Davis; and his parents, Elijah and Zula.
Edna M. Zander
NEW BUFFALO - Edna M. Zander, 95, of New Buffalo died at 6:57 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2009, at Jordan's Nursing Home, Bridgman of natural causes.
No services will be held. Cremation has taken place.
Edna was born on Feb. 22, 1913, in New Buffalo and was a life-long area resident. She was employed as a high school secretary at New Buffalo High School. Edna was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ, New Buffalo and the Women's Guild at St. Johns.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Meta Zander; a brother, William Zander; and sister, Florence Flemming.
She is survived by nieces, Shannon Schroeder and Robin Rennie; nephews, Peter Zdanis and Paul Zdanis; and a sister, Dorothy Zdanis of Three Oaks.
Muriel Elizabeth (Eggleston) Chapman
BRIDGMAN - Muriel Elizabeth Chapman, 93, of Bridgman died Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Woodland Terrace following an illness.
The remembrance service honoring Muriel will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 12, at the Anthony Castelbuono Youth Chapel on the campus of Andrews University with Pastor Arnold Swanson of Pioneer Memorial Church officiating. Inurnment will take place in Cypress View Mausoleum, San Diego, Calif., at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to the La Vida Mission, P.O.B. 3308, Farmington, N.M. 87499. Legacy Family Funeral Service - Matthew R. Purchase Chapel assisted the family with arrangements.
Muriel was born on Nov. 24, 1915, of Elmer and Eleanor Eggleston (nee Chapman) in Oakland, Calif. She legally changed her name to Chapman, as a young woman, and has been known by that name since.
She graduated as a nurse from San Diego County General Hospital in 1937. She graduated from Walla Walla College with a major in biology and nursing and a BSNE degree in 1947. She completed post graduate courses in obstetrical nursing at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital and orthopedic nursing at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. She earned her master's in nursing at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and her doctorate in education in 1969 at Columbia University in New York. Her work career as a dedicated educator and director of nursing spread across the United States and abroad. In 1980, while on academic leave from Andrews University, she organized the Nursing Archives at the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists in Silver Spring, Md. From this work she gathered materials that led to the writing and publication in 2000 of her book titled "Mission of Love, " A Century of Seventh-day Adventist Nursing.
She lived in Berrien Springs until 2004, when she moved to Woodland Terrace in Bridgman. She was predeceased by her parents, and a sister, Marjorie.
She is survived by a niece, Linda Smith of Sedro Wooky, Wash.; a cousin, Marion Hall of San Diego; a cousin, Susanne Dunaway of Shoreline, Wash.; and her informally adopted family, Zerita Hagerman and Jacqueline Kindman of Berrien Springs and Shing Mai and Bruce Hwang family of Philadelphia, Pa.
She will be missed by a multitude of students and colleagues who have known her and appreciated her attention to detail and placement of current events into historical context.
Charles F. Simmons
ST. JOSEPH - Charles F. Simmons, 82, of Sun City West, Ariz., formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Friday, June 5, 2009, in Surprise, Ariz.
Charles was a Western Michigan University graduate and an educator in Berrien County before moving to California. Upon retirement from teaching in California, Charles and his wife of 59 years, Marjorie (Meachum), moved to Sun City West.
Charles is survived by Marjorie, two daughters, Kathleen Amero and Colleen Adams, and son, Shawn Simmons. Also surviving Charles is his sister, Jeni Alexander of St. Joseph, one granddaughter, four grandsons and six great-grandchildren.
Iris Miller
STEVENSVILLE - Iris Miller, 77, of Stevensville and Naples, Fla., died Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family.
Iris was born May 19, 1932, in Lakeside, the daughter of Neal and Viola (Brown) Payne. She attended Three Oaks High School and graduated with the class of 1950.
On July 8, 1950, she married James D. Miller at St. Mary of the Assumption in Three Oaks. Iris worked for many years at Schraders Super Market before retiring. Iris enjoyed spending time with her family at the many family gatherings and especially being with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Iris is survived by her husband, James; daughter, Patricia (John) Behnke of Stevensville; grandchildren, Stephen (Laura) Behnke, Susan (Aaron) Toothman, Sarah (Brian) Kalczynski; great-grandchildren, Patrick Behnke, Katy Behnke, Alex Toothman; and sisters, Jackie (Gene) Miller of Sister Lakes and Patty Hall of Bridgman. She will also be missed by her sister and brother-in-laws, Katherine Gill, John Miller, Charles Miller, Gene Miller; and her many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, at St. Mary of the Assumption, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Father Donald Suberlak, C.R. as celebrant. Visitation will be Friday, June 12, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks, where a Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Cremation has taken place.

Paul W. Doroh
ST. JOSEPH - Paul W. Doroh, 84, of St. Joseph passed away Monday, June 8, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 619 Market St., St. Joseph, with the Rev. Tom Batsky officiating. Burial will follow in Spring Run Cemetery in Scottdale. Graveside military rites will be conducted. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Doroh was born April 10, 1925, in South Bend, Ind., to William H. and Elizabeth (Lambrecht) Doroh. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army. On Oct. 9, 1954, he married the former Eunice Waschilewsky at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Paul operated a farm in Royalton Township for many years as well as being employed at Plastronics Packaging in Stevensville. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. In his spare time, Paul enjoyed tending to his garden and splitting firewood.
Paul is survived by his wife, Eunice; two sons, Kevin (Cynthia) Doroh of Stevensville, Brian (Barbara) Doroh of Dayton, Ohio; five grandchildren, Matthew (Nicole Kennedy) Stutz, Andrew and Daniel Doroh, and Gregory and Laura Doroh; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Devin Kennedy; and his sister, Ruth Schulz of Berrien Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Pamela Doroh, in 1956; and a sister, Elizabeth Waggoner, in 2005.
