Ruth Rombauer Martin Sundberg

KALAMAZOO - Ruth Sundberg, age 88, died Friday, June 5, 2009, in Parchment.

She was born Feb. 6, 1921, the daughter of Frederick and Etelka (Rombauer) Martin.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Life Story Funeral Home, Betzler-Kalamazoo, 6080 Stadium Drive, 375-2900, followed by a luncheon in the Life Story Center. Ruth was an Artist and the Art Education Coordinator for the Battle Creek Art Center and Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore Martin.

Surviving are two sons - Chris (Nancy) Sundberg and Andy Sundberg (Susan Wolfert); two grandsons, Eric and Tim Sundberg; former husband, Harold Sundberg; and sister-in-law, Frances Martin and her family.

Mildred Cassidy

ST. JOSEPH - Edith Mildred (Overturf) Cassidy, 94, of St. Joseph, formerly of Coloma, passed away on Friday, June 5, 2009, at Caretel Inns, St. Joseph.

A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, at Plymouth Congregational Church, 123 First St., Watervliet. A visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 10 to 11 a.m. Arrangements are with Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Mitchell 8 Cemetery in Cooter, Mo. Memorial donations may be made to Lakeland Hospice.

Mildred was born on Dec. 25, 1914, in Steele, Mo., to Andrew Jefferson Overturf and Augusta Wallace. She married Thomas Leonard Cassidy Jr. on Aug. 24, 1934, in Steele. Mildred was very involved as a member in her church, the Ladies Aid Group, the Benton Harbor Lioness Club and was also an accomplished seamstress. She was also a teacher in Illinois and Missouri.

She is survived by her son, Thomas (Janice) Cassidy of Benton Harbor; a brother, Andrew (Alice) Overturf of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; a granddaughter, Cammie (Arturo) Hernandez; a grandson, Patrick (Eileen) Cassidy; and two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Caitlin Hernandez.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; her daughter, Patricia Cassidy; her son, John Cassidy; a brother, Rayburn Overturf; and a sister, Juanita Steele.

Doris Marie Radde

ST. JOSEPH - Doris Marie Radde, age 89, of Grand Haven, Mich., passed away in the early morning of the first day of spring 2009, at the Hospice of North Ottawa Community - Hospice House in Heartwood Lodge, Spring Lake, Mich.

Doris was born on May 22, 1919, in St. Joseph. Following her graduation from St. Joseph High School, Doris attended and graduated from Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo with a degree in home economics. Pursuing her teaching career, Doris began teaching home economics for the Muskegon Public Schools in September of 1950 and remained there until she retired in June of 1979. The vast majority of her career, she taught 8th Grade Home Economics at Nelson Junior High, Muskegon.

Following retirement Doris continued to share her home economics expertise with her niece, nephews and grandnieces, to their appreciative benefit. Doris enjoyed gardening, good books with a preference for mysteries, crossword puzzles, local news impacting Grand Haven and Muskegon, Lake Michigan's shoreline, and especially a series of cat companions with wonderfully unique personalities.

Doris is survived by her nephew, Donald (Cheryl) Kehrer of Monroe, Mich.; nephew, David Kehrer of El Cajon, Calif.; nephew, Jack (Cathy) Radde of McAllen, Texas; and niece, Jill (Ron) Danner of Splendora, Texas.

Aunt Doris has all of our love as she embraces her journey.

A memorial will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at the Radde Family plot, Riverview Cemetery, 2925 Niles Road, St. Joseph.

J. L. 'Buster' (Jim) Washington

BENTON HARBOR - J. L. "Buster" (Jim) Washington, 73, of Benton Harbor, formerly of Grand Rapids, Mich., was called home by the Lord on June 2, 2009, in Benton Harbor.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria; one son, Michael Washington; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held on Monday, June 8, at 12 p.m. at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 1105 East Main St., Benton Harbor. He will be laid to rest on Tuesday, June 9, at 11 a.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery, Grand Rapids. His family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 11 a.m. until time of services. Family Funeral Home is in charge of services.

Quantarion Turner

ST. JOSEPH - Quantarion Turner died on June 2, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 9, at 10 a.m. at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Arrangements are with Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph.

Quantarion was born on June 2, 2009, in St. Joseph, to Kaizha Pratcher and Christopher Turner.

He is survived by his mother; his father; two grandmothers - Lateka Eddie and Crystal Sanders; and two grandfathers - Lethel Turner and Marvin Pratcher.

Shirley M. Brezinski

BENTON HARBOR - Shirley M. Brezinski, 72, of Benton Harbor died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at her home.

Services celebrating her life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at the Fairplain Seventh-day Adventist Church on Colfax in Benton Harbor. The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the church. Cremation will follow the service and burial of the ashes will be held at a later date. The Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Harbor is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home.

Shirley was born on May 18, 1937, in White Earth Township in Minnesota to George and Lucy Lyons. She was a member of the Bois Forte Band of the Chippewa Indian Tribe. She enjoyed walking, bingo, cards and metal detecting. Shirley was outgoing and liked to talk to everybody. She always wanted to be at home with family and loved being with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, Nancy Brezinski of Berwyn, Ill., and Sheila Klann of Benton Harbor; her 10 grandchildren and her eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three children, Mark, Sandra and Sheryl.

Donna Jeffries

BANGOR - Donna Jeffries, 77, of Bangor died Sunday, June 14, 2009, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.

She was born March 23, 1932, in Lawrence to Donald and Lena (Earl) Slocum. Donna and her husband Frank owned and operated the Snow White Laundromat in South Haven for 16 1/2 years. She attended East Arlington Baptist Church in Lawrence.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank, in 2006; and one sister, Marion Houston of San Jose, Calif.

She is survived by one daughter, Virginia "Ginny" (Larry) Mitchell, and one son, Donald Jeffries, both of Bangor; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Elsie Richardson of Yarmouth, Mass. Several nieces, nephew and cousins also survive.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at Miracle Harvest Church with Pastor Anthony Kuenzli officiating.

The family is being helped by the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home of South Haven.

John R. Harner

ST. JOSEPH - John R. "Big John" Harner, 70, of St. Joseph, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 22, at the Dey-Florin Funeral Home, 2506 Niles Ave., St. Joseph, with Pastor Dean Pickett officiating. Military rites will conclude his service. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice at Home.

John was born Nov. 26, 1938, in Benton Harbor to Jess Craft and Anna Harner. He married the "love of his life" Kay Clubb and together they had four children. He worked for Superior Steel, HyFirehammer, and P.R. Shell. John will be remembered for his sense of humor and for always sharing a joke. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazerene in St. Joseph. John cherished his family and they loved him dearly. What he loved most was his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He had many friends and will be greatly missed by many.

John is survived by his wife, Kay, of 49 years; children - Debra (Steve) Paul from Texas, Tamera (Mark Gawron of Rochester, NY, Greg Haron of St. Joseph, and Tina (Terry) Jaggers of Benton Harbor; nine grandchildren - Staci, T.J., Ashley, Stephanie, Amanda, Kimberly, Michael, Tony, and Courtney; three great-grandchildren - Michael, Kari, and James; sister, Marge Adams of Dowagiac; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his son, John R. Harner, Jr.; and by his brothers, Albert, Bob, Frank, Ed, and Chuck Craft; and by his sisters, Mildred Miles, June Weaver, and MaryAnn Krajecki.
