Robert B. Jacob
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Robert B. Jacob, 83, of Berrien Springs died Sunday evening, June 21, 2009, at the Old Farm Living Center in Berrien Springs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Berrien Springs, with Pastor Gary Miller officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Stover-Wagner Post 85 of the Berrien Springs American Legion, of which Bob was a member.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs, and to leave messages for the family online at www.allredfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice at Home or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Bob was born Aug. 16, 1925, in Bessemer, Mich., the son of Bruce and Pearl (Woods) Jacob. He was a veteran of World War II, having served his country with the United States Navy. He graduated from Ferris State University, and he had worked as an accountant, retiring from the Niles Steel Tank Company as a purchasing agent.
On Jan. 7, 1949, he married Barbara Snyder in Big Rapids, Mich. They moved to Berrien Springs in 1963 and soon became involved in their new community. Their church membership was with the Trinity Lutheran Church. Together they were volunteers at the Berrien County Youth Fair. They enjoyed ballroom dancing, and were the founders of the Four Flags Square Dance Club in Niles. They were avid golfers, and also enjoyed traveling.
Bob is survived by two sons, Michael (Micah) Jacob of Clearwater, Fla., and Daniel (Thelma) Jacob of Berrien Springs; six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 2001, and by his sister, Rose Rood.
George 'Sonny' Kanyuh Jr.
BENTON HARBOR - George Kanyuh Jr., age 82, of Norway, Mich., formerly of Benton Harbor, died Friday, June 19, 2009, in Norway.
He was born in Kingsford, Mich., on Dec. 29, 1926, the son of the late George and Theresa (Bayrel) Kanyuh.
George served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He married Sophie Opolka on June 14, 1952, at St. Mary's Church in Norway. She preceded him in death on April 12, 2006.
They moved to Benton Harbor where they raised their family and lived for 33 years. He was a volunteer fireman for the St. Joe Township Station No. 2 for 21 of those years.
George retired from management at Whirlpool Corporation in 1984, at which time he and Sophie moved back to Norway.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman who loved spending time at his deer hunting cabin which he named "Sonny's Boondocks." He made many wonderful memories there with his friends and family.
George also enjoyed gardening, canning, woodworking and cooking for large groups at various social events.
He was a very devoted Catholic, a member of St. Mary's Church. He was a member of Hall-DeWinter Post 145, American Legion, Norvulet Post 4581, VFW, Fourth Degree Member K of C, Holy Spirit Council 9523, and Loyal Order of Moose 1474.
George is survived by his two sons, George (Lisa) Kanyuh of Rapid River, Garry (Linda) Kanyuh of Hartford; daughter, Starla (Michael) Wilcenski of Waterford; grandchildren, Averi, Hannah, George, Aaron, Cassandra and Blaise; brothers, Ken and Bob; sisters, Betty, Patsy and Theresa; brother-in-law, Henry Opolka.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim; and sisters, Gladys, Dorothy and Luella.
Visitation was held on Monday, June 22, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway. Prayers were held today, June 23, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church with Fr. Arnold Grambow presiding.
Interment followed at the Norway Township Cemetery.
Donald E. Shembarger
BERRIEN CENTER - Donald E. Shembarger, 71, of Berrien Center died Saturday, June 20, 2009 at home with his family at his side after a struggle with cancer.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, at Christ Lutheran Church in Stevensville with Pastor David Weiss officiating. Burial will follow in Crystal Springs Cemetery. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Legacy Family Funeral Services- Matthew R. Purchase Chapel and sign the guest book at www.legacyfuneral.com. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are to Christ Lutheran Church and School or to Hospice at Home.
Don was born April 12, 1938, in Millburg to Maurice F. and Elfrieda E. (Richter) Shembarger. On Dec. 15, 1957, in Berrien Springs Don married Joan E. Pudell, who survives.
He owned and operated Cast-Matic Corporation for many years. Don was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. As an elder, he served on the board of Christian education and also had been a trustee. He loved farming, fishing and hunting, but most of all, he love spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's sporting events.
Survivors include his loving wife, Joan; two sons, William (Lorayne) of Berrien Center and David (Heather) of Berrien Springs; three brothers, Robert (Betty) of Berrien Center, Richard (Vicki) of Berrien Springs and Allen (Teresa) of Berrien Center; and eight loving grandchildren, Kelsey, Lyndsey, Jonathan, Garrett, Rebecca, Everrett, Brian and Gabriel.
He was predeceased by his parents, Frieda and Morrie, one brother, Jerry, on April 11, 1948, and one son, Jon on Oct. 15, 1979.
Alice L. Ingram
BENTON HARBOR - Alice L. Ingram, 79, passed away Saturday evening, June 20, 2009, at her home.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Florin-Fairplain Funeral Home, 1053 E. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home.
Alice was born Jan. 26, 1930, in Woodlawn, Ill., to Sam and Ella Ferguson. She had four children. Alice enjoyed playing bingo and cards in her leisure time. Above all, she cherished time spent with her family - particularly with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alice is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Howard Ray Henry of Sodus, Brian Eugene Henry of Benton Harbor, Donna Fay Keckler of Homer, Mich., and Lisa Michelle Eldridge of Manila, Ark.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and by her brother, Kerley Ferguson of Illinois.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents.
Ruth C. Mensinger Milnickel
BENTON HARBOR - Ruth Catherine Milnickel, 86, of Benton Harbor went to her heavenly home on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at the home of her daughter Shirley Grabowski, where she had lived for the past few years.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at the Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Burial in North Shore Memory Gardens will immediately follow the service. Visitation for family and friends is Tuesday, June 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the DAV.
Ruth was born on Jan. 6, 1923, in South Bend, Ind., to Samuel and Doris (Burgoyne) Casper. She married Vernon John Mensinger on May 21, 1938, in Michigan City, Ind. They lovingly raised four daughters in the Benton Heights neighborhood where they enjoyed 53 years together until his death on May 26, 1991. She met Alfred Milnickel at Benton Heights Church of God and they were married there on Sept. 14, 1992. They shared seven years together until his death on April 9, 1999.
She worked at the V-M Corporation in Benton Harbor for more than 20 years. She also worked at Univex in Benton Harbor and Saluto Foods in Coloma. She was a member of the Benton Heights Church of God.
She was a wonderful and devoted mother, grandmother and sister. Her greatest joy was her family and spending time with them. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Shirley (Charles) Grabowski of Benton Harbor, Vernette (Marvin) Chaney of Benton Harbor, Connie (David) Menefee of Millburg and Beverly Cook of Stevensville; four brothers, Bud (Phyllis) Casper, Donald (Jeri) Casper, Harley (Betty) Casper and Joe (Lois) Casper; five sisters, Lauretta Grezsiak, Laura Neal, Dorothy Daniels, Jean (Vincent) Maggio and Carol Casper; eight grandchildren, Kevin Eberhardt, Ricky Sellers, Tina (Joe) Martin, Chris Sellers, Patrick (Jill) Kennedy, Jeffrey Kennedy, Brian Chaney and Jennifer (Chad) Kodiak; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, George Henry Casper, a granddaughter, Kellie Lynn Kennedy and most recently a grandson, Keith Alan Eberhardt on Oct. 5, 2008, and two son-in-laws, Charles Robertson and Red Deerfield Cook.
Mary Quintana-Saenz
Mary Louise Quintana-Saenz, 84, of Hartford departed this earthly life on Friday, June 19, 2009, at her home.
Mary was born on Sept. 16, 1924, in McAllen, Texas, the daughter of Erasmo and Maria (Flores) Ellis, both of whom preceded her in passing. Mary is also preceded in passing by 14 children and a brother.
Mary is survived by her husband, Jose Quintana, whom she married on Aug. 18, 1994; seven children - Elizabeth Saenz, Leon Saenz and Lee Saenz, all of Hartford; Angel (Gloria) Saenz of Dade City, Fla.; Yolanda Saenz and Olga Santiago of Houston, Texas; and Leo (Cindy) Saenz of Maryland. Mary is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren great-great- grandchildren and many friends.
Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who also loved to play practical jokes on the entire family. She always made sure that everyone who came to the house had plenty to eat so no one would ever go away hungry. She enjoyed going dancing and to rummage sales, where she would buy things and then donate them to any child in need.
The family will welcome friends on Tuesday, June 23, from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 1:30 p.m. at the Calvin Funeral Home in Hartford. Pastor Antonio Gonzalez of the Temple Jerusalem Church in Bangor, of which Mary was a member, will officiate. Mary will be laid to rest in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford Township. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mary's name may be made to the family.
