Anson Stephon Garrett
BENTON HARBOR - Anson Stephon Garrett joined his heavenly Father in heaven on June 25, 2009, in South Bend, Ind., while attending camp.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at the Second Baptist Church in Benton Harbor with the Rev. Kenneth Gavin officiating. Burial will follow in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church and leave messages for the family at www.legacyfuneral.com. Memorial contributions may be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of Michigan. Legacy Family Funeral Services - Matthew R. Purchase Chapel, Berrien Springs, is serving the family.
Anson was born Aug.12, 1988, to the late Lyman (Jones) Garrett and Cynita Garrett in St. Joseph. He accepted Christ at a young age at Second Baptist Church under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. Donald Adkins, where he was a member of the Junior Ushers, Youth Ministry and often looked forward to singing and leading devotion.
Anson was a graduate of the Lakeshore Class of 2007. One of his favorite classes was wood shop, where he received a state honorable mention for making a clock. He was a huge Chicago White Sox and Michigan State Spartans fan.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Cynita; brothers, Lyman (Cassandra) Garrett and Corney Garrett of Grand Rapids; sisters, Ashley Garrett of Grand Rapids, Kim (Mark) Jones of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Teresa Coates of Hinesville, Ga.; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Anson was preceded in death by his father, Lymon, his sister, Amber, and grandparents, Lymon Jones, James and Naomi Rolling and Ida Williams.
Diann R. Strunk
BERRIEN CENTER - Diann R. Strunk, 61, of Berrien Center died Saturday, June 27, 2009, at home with her family at her side following a courageous battle with cancer.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Berrien Springs, with the Rev. Gary Miller officiating. Friends may visit with the family at the church the evening before from 6 to 8 p.m. and also sign the guest book at www.legacyfuneral.com. Burial will follow funeral services in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Kendallville, Ind. Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Diann was born on Oct. 14, 1947, in Sturgis, Mich., to Harold and Beulah (Griem) Ritter. On Dec. 10, 1967, in St. Joseph she married William Strunk, who survives. She had been employed as an administrative assistant, and a personal banker. Diann loved flowers, working in her garden and bird-watching. She was a volunteer at Fernwood Botanical Gardens. Diann was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.
Besides her loving husband, Diann is survived by one sister, Martha Emery of Phoenix, Ariz.; four brothers, Forrest "Bill" (Delores) Ritter of Phoenix, Roy (Linda) Ritter of North Carolina, Sheldon (Beverly) Ritter of Sturgis and Michael Ritter of Payson, Ariz.; as well as many loving nieces and nephews and many good friends.
Besides her parents, Diann was preceded in death by one brother, Harold, in 1989.
Robert Kurt Weber
DECATUR - Robert Kurt Weber, age 78, of Decatur passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009, at home.
Robert was born April 13, 1931, in St. Joseph, the son of Kurt and Olga (Schmidt) Weber. Bob was president and co-founder of KWK Industries with his wife and sons. He was previously a superintendent at Star Pattern and a foreman at Superior Steel. He was a pattern maker by trade, a gifted wood craftsman with an inventive spirit.
He established with his father the Weber family homestead and farm, logging all the trees for lumber to construct the farm buildings. His five grandchildren enjoyed sitting at his knee hearing his tales of family history and life adventures.
He married Irene M. Johnson June 10, 1950, in Coloma. She preceded him in death June 13, 2008.
Survivors include a daughter, Karen René Brewer of Lawton; two sons, Kim R. (Nancy) Weber of Decatur, Kurt R. (Patricia) Weber of Kalamazoo; a sister, Dolores (Harold) Rimpel of Stevensville; and five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren - Rachel (Weber) and Jim Roberts, Emily and James; Reggie Weber and Jamie Murray and Evan Weber; Aaron Brewer; Kelly (Weber) and Ryan Stetten and Audrey; Danielle (Weber) and Elijah Field.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Newell Funeral Home, Decatur. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartford, of which he was a member and elder, with Pastor Fred Adrian officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery, Decatur. Memorials may be made to the church or Borgess Visiting Nurse and Hospice.
Ronna 'Ronnie' Mandarino
COLOMA - Ronna Lee 'Ronnie' Mandarino nee Rossa, age 71, died June 27, 2009. Longtime Dolton, Ill., resident, she had made her home the past 10 years on Paw Paw Lake in Coloma.
Wife for 54 years to Walter Mandarino. Mother of Susan, Thomas, and Lynne Mandarino, and Deanna (Joseph) Mulherin. Daughter of the late Eleanor nee Nelson and Walter Rossa. Sister-in-law of Connie (Ken) Caplinger and the late Georgina "Joy" (Donald) Hakes.
Resting at Panozzo Bros. Funeral Home, 530 W. 14th St. (U.S. Rt. 30, three blocks east of Western Avenue), Chicago Heights, Ill., from 3 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1. Funeral services 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Entombment Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum, Glenwood, Ill.
Mary Rose (Longar) McNish
BRIDGMAN - Mary Rose (Longar) McNish, 86, of Bridgman passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Royalton Manor in St. Joseph, surrounded by her family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 3903 Lake St. in Bridgman. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends is Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m. at Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bridgman Public Library or the Twin Cities Literacy Council.
Mary was born on July 6, 1922, in Manistique, Mich., to Joseph and Rose (Milavec) Longar. She married James A. McNish in Detroit in October 1946. She worked for many years as an insurance claims processor at AAA. She belonged to the Bridgman Women's Club and was past president of the International Typographical Union Women's Auxiliary. She was active in the Twin Cities Literacy Council, Bridgman Public Library, Bridgman Women's Auxiliary and Bible studies. After retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, quilting, cooking, gardening and water aerobics.
Mary is survived by her two daughters, Anne (Dave) Vonk of Benton Harbor and Mary Jane (Jeffrey) Waldman of Orinda, Calif., and her son, James "Joseph" (Susan) McNish of Memphis, Tenn. She is also survived by a sister, Caroline Spina of Sebastian, Fla., and three grandchildren - Drew (Virginia Griffin) Waldman of Portland, Ore., Jonathan Vonk of Peoria, Ill., and Andrea Vonk of Benton Harbor.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Joseph Longar; and a sister, Dorothy Taylor.
Evelyn Gray
BENTON HARBOR - Evelyn Gray, 74, of Benton Harbor passed away peacefully at her daughter's home on Friday, June 26, 2009, surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Services celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3, at the Second Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, with Pastor Kenneth Gavin officiating. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Second Baptist Church. The Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Harbor is in charge of the arrangements.
Evelyn was born on July 29, 1934, in Blytheville, Ark., to Austin and Mary Isom. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church and served as a senior usher for many years. Evelyn attended the Day Services for Seniors where she was loved and will be missed. Her daughter, Victoria, and her grandson, Cameron, were her loving caregivers. She liked to watch movies and loved dining out. Evelyn was a kind and caring person who had a loving heart and a forgiving nature.
She is survived by her children - Armeatrice (Charles) Pryor of Benton Harbor, Rosemary (Raymond) Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Anthony Lowe of Kalamazoo, Debra Nattee of Benton Harbor, Antoinette (Marshall) Hayes of Benton Harbor and Victoria Nattee of Benton Harbor; her brother, Richard Isom of Benton Harbor; her sister, Wilma Brown of Atlanta, Ga.; her 19 grandchildren; her 47 great-grandchildren; her four great-great-grandchildren; her special friend, Sarah Hureskin of Benton Harbor; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary, in 1990; her father, Austin, in 1993; her sister, Barbara Jean Washington, in 2002; and a son, Sam Lowe, in 2005.
Jean Carol Hoffman
HAGAR TOWNSHIP - Jean's life began June 1, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was one of three daughters born to Clarence and Hannah (Andrews) Donze. Jean worked in home health care for Lakeland Hospital, and she was very active in jail ministry through the Pioneer Church in Berrien Springs. Jean enjoyed camping and canoeing, and she took great joy in gardening, "spending time in her garden" with flowers, herbs, and vegetables, and sewing. She was an active member of Coloma Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Jean's greatest love came from caring for her family, which includes: her husband, Ellsworth "Al" Hoffman; a daughter, Cherie Shane of Yuma, Ariz.; two step-children, Erik (Brandi) Hoffman of Port Huron, Mich., and Christinne (Ron) Silc of Elkhart, Ind.; a granddaughter she was anxiously waiting for to be born in July; four step-grandchildren; and a sister, Denise Sonnenburg of Riverside.
Jean died Friday, June 26, 2009, at her home.
A month-old daughter, Leona Ann Terlisner, and her parents precede her in death.
Jean's family will be celebrating her life with a memorial service on Wednesday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m. at Coloma Seventh Day Adventist Church. Memorials may be made to the church. Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet is assisting Jean's family with arrangements.
Kenneth 'Ken' G. Tibbs
COLOMA - Kenneth "Ken" G. Tibbs, 86, of Coloma, formerly of Eau Claire, passed away Thursday morning, June 25, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, June 29, at the Davidson Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, 249 E. Center Street, in Coloma. Burial will follow in Eau Claire Cemetery in Eau Claire with Military Rites. The visitation will be on Sunday afternoon from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Davidson Chapel. Memorials may be made to the First Congregational Church of Christ in Coloma, Countryside Nursing Home Activities Fund, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Ken was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Eau Claire, to Glen and Ruth Tibbs. Ken was raised by his mother and step-father, Leo Zech. He married Rita Rupley on Aug. 3, 1942, in Corinth, Miss., and together they had celebrated 66 years of marriage. They resided in the Eau Claire and Coloma area all of their lives. They also spent many happy winters at their home in Leesburg, Fla. Ken worked for City Plumbing for 27 years. He was a member of the Plumber and Pipefitters Union Local 357 for over 60 years. Ken proudly served his county during World War II in the Pacific Theater, achieving the rank of Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was a long-time active member in both the Coloma and Eau Claire American Legions. Ken was also very active with the Boy Scouts of America, as a Scout Master and as a trainer of other Scout Masters. He was a member of the Coloma Rod & Gun Club. Both he and his wife were long-time members of the First Congregational Church of Christ in Coloma. Ken enjoyed farming and carpentry after his retirement. He will be remembered as a person who always enjoyed family gatherings. Ken was most proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed being involved in their lives.
Ken is survived by his children, Judy (Richard) Timm of Coloma and Robert Tibbs of Cincinnati, Ohio; three grandsons - Michael (Amy) Timm, Gary (Tina) Timm and Steven (Christina Reddick) Timm; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Stanley Zech of Berrien Center; and by his sisters - Helen Trail of Eau Claire, Sally Blankenship of Eau Claire and Betty Kowalski of Chicago.
In addition to his parents, Kenneth is preceded in death by his wife, Rita in October 2008, and by his brother, Fred Zech.
