Carol Jo Hemingway
Carol Jo Hemingway passed away following a brief illness on Thursday, July 9, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 23, 1927, to Carl and Ethel Hemingway. Carol Jo graduated from St. Joseph High School and Western Michigan University. Holding a degree in Library Science, she worked on a bookmobile in Jefferson City, the Detroit Public Library Children's Department and Lake Michigan Catholic High School. After retirement, she was employed by a local uniform shop where she enjoyed spending time with customers and staff.
Carol Jo was active in many organizations including Daughers of Ossoli, Daughters of the American Revolution, Morton House and Krasl Art Center. She loved to read, play bridge, walk for miles, garden and collect beach glass along the shore.
Carol Jo felt blessed to be loved by family and special friends Judy, Jim, Ruth and Carole.
Family members preceding her in death were her mother, father and sister Janice Weedfall.
Surviving is her niece, Lynette (Charles) Johnson; nephew, Steven Weedfall, two great nieces, Elizabeth and Katherine Johnson; and two great-nephews, Austin and Drew Weedfall. In accordance with "Auntie's" wishes, she was cremated, and a private memorial service will take place later this month.
For those wishing to make memorial contributions, the family suggests the Krasl Art Center, the St. Joseph Public Library or the Humane Society. The family is being served by the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service.
Robert P. Harrison
PAW PAW - Robert P. Harrison, age 91, of Paw Paw, passed away Thursday, July 16, 2009, at his home.
Mr. Harrison was born Jan. 30, 1918, in Alton, Ill.
Bob grew up in the Bloomingdale area, graduated from Bloomingdale High School and attended Western Michigan University. He enlisted in the Army during World War II, and was stationed at the field hospital at the airbase in Yunnanyi, China. After the war, he returned to the Midwest and married Catherine Galway. During the Korean War, he was recalled and served at Fort Lewis, Wash., and Fort Sill, Okla. He returned to the Kalamazoo area and worked in the banking industry, eventually retiring from First Federal Savings and Loan. He managed branch offices in Portage, Parchment and Paw Paw.
He was active in the Portage Optimist Club and in St. Jude Parish in Gobles. Bob was well known for his sense of humor and his dedication to his family, church and the community.
Surviving are three children - Susan (Steve) Webb of Diamond Bar, Calif., Robert (Janine) Harrison of Stevensville, and Mary (Larry) McConnell of Taos, N.M.; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine, in 2007 and his parents, Zephaniah and Edna Harrison.
The family will meet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Gobles Chapel, D.L. Miller Funeral Home, where a rosary service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Jude Parish, with Father Robert Cregan, celebrant. Interment will be in Baseline Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to Hospice at Home or St. Jude Parish, Gobles.
Robert 'Buddy' Rendell
COVERT - Robert "Buddy" Rendell, 60, of Covert died Tuesday, July 14, at South Haven Community Hospital.
He was born Nov. 5, 1948, in South Haven, Mich., to Edwin B. (Ted) and Norma (Mull) Rendell. Buddy graduated from Covert High School in 1967. Bud worked as a firefighter and paramedic for the Covert Township Fire and Rescue for more than 15 years, retiring because of disabilities in 2000. Prior to that he owned and operated Forest Dunes Grocery in Covert.
Bud was an avid outdoorsman and loved to ride his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Bud loved to walk the Lake Michigan beach and collect beach glass. Buddy was a great friend to many and was never judgmental. He gave generously and unconditionally of his tremendous heart to many.
He was preceded in death, along with his parents, by his sister, Dorlane (Tyke) Summers.
He is survived by two daughters - Jamie Weiss of Kalamazoo, Mich., and Jessica (Josh) Gignac of Fenton, Mich.; three grandchildren - Joslyn Gignac, Janell Weiss and Stephon Weiss; one brother - Ken (Cindy) Rendell of Lundonderry, N.H.; and nieces and nephews.
A party in celebration of Buddy's life will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the Dune Lake, 80739 CR 376, Covert, Mich. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made the American Cancer Society.
Edward Allen Trail
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Edward Allen Trail, 85, went home to his heavenly father on July 15, 2009, in Birmingham, Ala.
He was born Nov. 30, 1923, the son of Cecil Trail and Lillie Moore. At his wishes, cremation has taken place.
He lived most of his life in the Twin Cities area. A devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Ed married Vivian Louise Forrester on June 14, 1947, in Sodus. Vivian Louise preceded in death on April 28, 2003.
He loved helping others and donated all his latter years to service.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 20, 2009, with family at Crystal Springs Church of God, 1465 Pipestone Road, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Fred Davey officiating. Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. prior to the service.
Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country in World War II. He carried a bullet in the side of his head for the service he gave. He was most proud to have served his country to keep it free. He was with the Golden Acorn, 87th Division of the Army.
He was manager for many years at Producer's Creamery in Benton Harbor and then took over the plant manager's job with Spinney Run Dairy in Illinois and lived in Wisconsin. Ed gave many years of service to the churches he attended.
He was preceded in death by five brothers.
He is survived by his daughters - Glenda (Darrell) Rouland of Chelsea, Ala., Patsy (Fred) Bohn of Pelham, Ala., and Shirley (Robert) Doehrer of Stevensville; five grandchildren - Steven (Laurie) Olsen, Robert (Shelley) Young, Jennifer (Robert) Doehrer, Christopher Rouland and Michael (Aimee) Statham; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters - Mary Wesner and Dorothy (Fred) Davey.
Memorials may be made to Crystal Springs Church of God.
Edna F. Rushing
COLOMA - Edna F. Rushing, 69, of Coloma died at her home on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.
Services celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, at the Davidson Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Coloma. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Davidson Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society.
Edna was born on June 3, 1940, to Raymond and Katherine Rendell. She retired this year from Midwest Timer after 28 years of employment. She enjoyed gardening and her flowers. Edna also loved her cat "Funny Face". She was a kind and caring person who loved spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Bill (Dawn) Rushing of Coloma, Jeff Rushing of Decatur, Debora Delmas of Lyon, France, and Kathy (Arlen) Dahn of Corunna, Mich.; her grandchildren, Blake Rushing, Auston Rushing, Logan Rushing, Alexis Rushing, Caitlyn Hahn, Gauthier Delmas, Olivia Delmas, Mark Bolin, and Ashley Bolin; her great grandchildren, Makayla Bolin and Makenzie Scott; and her special friend, Karen Hook of Watervliet.
Kathryn Ann (Deaner) Perkins
BENTON HARBOR - Our precious Kathryn Ann (Deaner) Perkins is now in the arms of her Savior Jesus Christ. She was called home July 14, 2009, by her Lord, who sustained her during her 58 years of life and her year-long illness.
She is survived by her devoted, loving husband, Don, and her two children, Amy (Ryan) Blackburn of Grandville and Kyle Perkins of Fishers, Ind. Her family was unquestionably one of her greatest joys and she treasured being "Nana" to her grandchildren, RJ and Cora Blackburn. She passed on her faith, her joy, her wisdom, as well as her love for life to her family and many others. She will be deeply missed by her parents, Bert and Ann Deaner, her three sisters and best friends, Marcy (Jerry) Tubergen, Mary (Jay) Caldwell and Pat Deaner (Gregg Stoepker).
She was an involved, loving aunt and will be dearly remembered by Lindsey Kerstetter, Jonathon Caldwell, Ashley McDonald, Brittany Spoelman, Jenna Tubergen, Luke Tubergen, Cindy Stauffer, Chad Bush, Curt Bush, Jacob Perkins, Joshua Perkins and Lori Huff. Also touched by her loss are her in-laws; mother, Gladys Perkins, brother, Ron (Peggy) Perkins and sister, Carolyn (Crag) Bush and additional family members and loved ones.
Kathy loved the closeness of her large, extended family and the gatherings were a common part of her everyday life and provided many lasting memories. Kathy cultivated many special friends through life, and they were all part of Kathy's many adventures, shared experiences, and spiritual growth. They came alongside her in the final days to provide consistent support, care, laughter and prayer.
Her dear friend, Sandy Donker, was a faithful prayer partner for many years and provided a deep friendship resulting in answered prayers and support for each other. She took seriously the call of her faith and spent a significant part of her life involved in ministries.
She was a leader in Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), was involved in Calvary Non-Denominational Church's Youth program during her children's growing up years and most recently in Prison Ministry Fellowship.
Kathy graduated from Wittenberg University and received her masters in counseling from WMU. Kathy was in education for 27 years teaching mathematics at various levels. She loved her role as a school counselor for 20 years at Forest Hills Central Woodlands and Central Middle School, where she affected many lives for years to come. She worked with many close friends at Central Woodlands and she was grateful for their continued faithful provision of meals, thoughtfulness and companionship during the past year.
Those who knew Kathy and were touched by her life are invited to greet the family at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Grand Rapids on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Calvary Non-Denominational Church on Friday at 1 p.m. The family asks in lieu of any cards or flowers, that you may instead honor the memory of Kathy's life by donating to Bible Study Fellowship (www.bsfinternational.org) or the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital Pediatric Oncology Child Life Department.
