John Tetlow
John F. Tetlow, Jr., 65, of Spring Lake died Thursday, May 20, 1999 at his home.
He was born Jan. 19, 1934 in Chicago to John F. and Melba (Schuett) Tetlow, Sr. and married Ruth A. Grossman, Jan. 3, 1959 in Spring Lake.
He moved to the area in 1943 and served in the U.S. Navy and Naval Reserves for 15 years. He was employed for many years by Bastian & Blessing in Grand Haven as purchasing director. He was president and owner of Wolverine Kitchen Supply. Tetlow had also been employed by Manting Equipment Co., Northern Lighting/All Phase Electric, and was purchasing director for Stainless Concepts in Grand Haven.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a former usher and member of St. Mary's Usher Club; worked on St. Mary's Festival and the Diocesan Development Fund Drive.
Tetlow coached Little League and was a Cub Scout leader, enjoyed golf, fishing, gardening and working in his yard.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Ruth; two daughters, Diane E. (Dan) Kieft, Canton; Claudine (Mark) Tetlow-Easterly, Spring Lake; two sons, Bradley J. (Janet) Tetlow, Ada; Steven E. (Tina) Tetlow, Holly; seven grandchildfren, Stephanie, Kathryn, Collin and Alec John Kieft; Joseph, Bethany and Austin Tetlow; three sisters, Doris (John) Goloversic; Delores (Frank) Scott, both of Spring Lake; Karen (David) Wessell, Scranton, Penn.; also several nieces, nephews and cousins, and two aunts, Louise Scott, Grand Haven, Etna (Ralph) Plumb, Spring Lake; and an uncle, Frank Raha.

The Funeral Mass for Mr. John F. Tetlow, Jr. will be held 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spring Lake with Rev. Fr. Anthony Vainavicz as celebrant. Interment will follow in Spring Lake Cemetery. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Spring Lake. Memorial contributions to the family are appreciated.

Thelma Gibbs
Thelma Gibbs, 91, formerly of Grand Haven, died May 13, 1999 at her son's home in White Cloud.
She was born on Nov. 20, 1907 in Ohio but lived in Grand Haven for most of her life. Three years ago she moved to White Cloud with her son.
Mrs. Gibbs was proceeded in death by her husband William.
Survivors include a son, Larry (Sharon) Wiggers of White Cloud; four grandsons, Terry, Matt, Joseph (Anne), and Robert (Vicki) Wiggers; two granddaughters, Kelli (Matt) Strait and Cheryl Howell; and seven great grandchildren.
Services are pending but burial is expected to be in the Robinson Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Newaygo County.
Christian Beukema
Christian F. Beukema, 81, a native of Grand Haven, died Friday, May 14, 1999 at his home in Ft. Myers, Fla.
He was a graduate of Grand Haven High School and Michigan State University in 1940 with a degree in civil engineering. He was employed by United States Steel Corp. for more than 30 years retiring in 1979 as vice president of raw materials and lake shipping. Throughout his career at U.S. Steel he served in a succession of engineering and management positions including president of Michigan Limestone Division, Detroit and president of Oliver Iron Mining Division in Duluth, Minn.
Mr. Beukema was honored as the Marine Man of the Year by the Council of Lake Erie Ports, for his leadership in lake shipping and pioneering efforts in year-round naviagation of the lakes. In 1967 he was awarded an honorary degree of doctor of laws by Michigan State University. He entered the armed forces in 1941 and served with the Sixth Army Group Headquarters and with Headquarters, U.S. Forces, European Theater. He attained the rank of major prior to returning to his engineering job with U.S.Steel in 1945.
He was a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute; American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; director and vice chairman of the American Mining Congress and the Lake Carriers Assoc.; board of managers of the American Bureau of Shipping; director of Northeastern Minnesota Development Assoc. and the Minnesota State Council on Economic Educuation. He was also a member of the board of advisors of the Minnesota Private College Fund, and on the executive board of Michigan State University Alumni Assoc. and a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi national honorary fraternities.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, M. Elizabeth (Betty); two sons, John (Cindy) Beukema, Minneapolis, Minn.; and Bob Beukema, Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, Frederick and David, both of Minneapolis; a sister, Jean (Thomas) Wagner, Holland and brother, Cornell Beukema, Grand Haven.
A memorial service for Mr. Christian F. Beukema will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 28 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2439 McGregor Blvd., Ft. Myers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Habitat for Humanity of Lee County, Inc., 1288 N. Tamiani Trail, North Ft. Myers, Fla. 33903.

Ella Ruth Herbst
Ella Ruth Herbst, 90, of Grand Haven died Saturday, May 15, 1999 at her home.
She was born Oct. 24, 1908 in Fenton to John and Mabel (Runyan) White and married Frederick Herbst June 29, 1929 in Fenton. They had been married nearly 49 years at the time of his death, April 30, 1978. Mrs. Herbst was an area resident most of her adult life and was a member of Calvary Christian Fellowship in Grand Haven.
She is survived by daughter-in-law, Karen Herbst, Grand Rapids; 2 grandchildren: Frederick "Rick" Herbst III, and Kristin (Robert) Noll; 2 great grandchildren: Morgan MacKenzie and Anna Makay; a sister-in-law, Elsie White, Wyoming, Mich. and her sister, Myrtle Blum, Walker; also a niece and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son, Frederick, Jr., in 1991.

Luella Secor
Mrs. Luella "Hope" Secor, 72, died Sunday, May 16, 1999 at her home.
She was born in Fruitport on April 13, 1927 to Roy and Alveretta (Pouch) Batchelor and married Bill Secor in Fruitport on March 24, 1972. Mrs. Secor was homemaker and a communicant of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Spring Lake. She enjoyed world travel, needlework and reading.
Survivors include a son, Jeff (LeeAnn) Frame of Fruitport; a stepdaughter, Jane (Michael) Kemper of Kalamazoo; two grandsons, Jacob and Nathan; two sisters, Pauline Eskew of Florida and Nancy Kostamo of Fruitport; a brother, Tom Batchelor of California; and several nieces, nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Secor.

Vera C. Bunker
Vera C. Bunker, 88 of West Olive, died Friday, May 14, 1999.
Vera was a member of the Robinson Baptist Church for the past 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John, her brother Upton Tupper, her granddaughter Vicki, and two great-granddaughters, Brittany and Jacklyn.
She is survived by her children: Joyce (Hank) Whilden, James (Shirley) Longieliere, Larry (Marilyn) Longieliere, Charles (Lana) Longieliere, Carole (Ken) Smith, Alvin (Linda) Longieliere, Robert (Judy) Bunker, and Dennis Bunker; her step-daughters, Viola Falbe, and Marge Bunker; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and three nieces.

Clifford E. Dalman
Clifford E. Dalman, 87, of Spring Lake died Saturday, May 15, 1999, in a Umatilla, Fla. hospital.
He was born Sept. 24, 1911 in Rudyard to Gerrit. B. and Josnia (Verecke) Dalman. He was an area resident most of his life; spent several winters in Florida; and was a supervisor for Challenge Porcelain until retiring in 1965.
He was married to Margaret A. VanHaver from 1933 until her death in 1970. His second wife, Alice Ruster, married him in 1970 and preceded him in death in 1981. Ruby Waldron Hull married Dalman in 1985 and preceded him in death in 1996.
Dalman was a member and former elder of Nortonville Chapel; a former Board of Education member for Patchin School and also a member of the Camera Club. His interests also included fishing, hunting, gardening and woodworking.
He is survived by four daughters: Diane (Joel) Schlukebir, Grand Haven, Dawn (J. Paul) King, Spring Lake, Darlene (Ludwig) Schirm, Texas, and Deborah (John ) Duckworth, Fla.; three sons; Wayne E. (Linda) Dalman, Spring Lake, Melvyn D. (Betty) Dalman, Grand Haven, and "Guy" Clifford G. (Pat) Dalman, Spring Lake; 20 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three step-daughters and two step-sons; also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Ella Herbst, 90, of Grand Haven, died recently at her home.

Harold J. Essebaggers
Harold J. Essebaggers, 91, died Sunday, May 16, 1999 in Grand Haven. He was the former owner of Franklin Press of Grand Haven and a member of Second Christian Reformed Church of Grand Haven. Harold was preceded in death by his two brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Catherine; sons, Jim (Sarah Jane) Essebaggers of Grand Haven, Charles (Lynn) of Great Falls, Montana, Bruce (Donna) Essebaggers of Fremont, and Glenn (Nancy) Essebaggers of Troy; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his brothers, Myron and Ernest, both of Muskegon.

Julia R. Hitsman
Julia R. Hitsman, 80, of Spring Lake died Sunday, May 16, 1999, at her son's home in Rockford.
She was born Aug. 27, 1918 in Galion, Ohio to Harry and Susan (Honness) Connor and was an area resident most of her life. She retired from Eagle Ottawa Leather Co. in 1980 after 37 years of service.
She is survived by her son, Robert Hitsman, Rockford; daughter-in-law, Margo Hitsman, Spring Lake; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Lue, Grand Haven; and two nephews of Grand Haven. She was preceded in death by her son, Merinus "Hep" Hitsman, April 30, 1997.

Luella "Hope" Secor, 72, of Fruitport, died Sunday.

Martha M. Miller
Martha M. Miller, 96, Holland, died Sunday, May 16, 1999.
She was born in Danforth, Ill, and grew up in Holland. She attended Hope College and the University of Wisconsin. She was married to Howard C. Miller, founder of the Howard Miller Clock Company.
Mrs. Miller, a life-long resident of Zeeland, Michigan, was active in church and community affairs. She was an organizer of the Zeeland Girl Scouts. She served as president of the Zeeland Literary Club and the Women's Society of the Second Reformed Church, among others. She was a board member and officer of the Howard Miller Clock Company for many years.
She was interested in the Zeeland Library. This interest resulted in a gift to the community by the Miller family that led to the construction of the Howard Miller Library and Community Center in 1995.
She is survived by her children, Jack H. Miller of Grand Haven, Connie (Leonard) Johnston of Bloomfield Hills, Philip (Nancy) Miller of Holland, Betty R. Miller of Macatawa; eight grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard C. Miller in 1995.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wed., May 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the Second Reformed Church in Zeeland. Visiting hours will be Tues., May 18, 1999, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions can be made to the Howard Miller Library and Community Center in Zeeland.
