Leonard N. Hare
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Dr. Leonard N. Hare, 87, of Berrien Springs died after a short illness on Saturday, July 25, 2009, at his home surrounded by his family.
Friends are invited to share memories and visit with the family from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, July 31, at Legacy Family Funeral Services - Matthew R. Purchase Chapel, Berrien Springs. In keeping with Leonard's wishes, cremation has taken place. Family messages may be left at www.legacyfuneral.com. Dr. Hare was born on Dec. 5, 1921, in Rangoon, Burma. He was the second of four children of Eric B. Hare and Agnes Fulton Hare. After the family moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1934, he attended grammar school, followed by secondary school in Lodi Academy. He graduated with a bachelor of arts from Pacific Union College in Angwin, Calif., and in 1944, married Esther Borrowdale on June 25, and set out bound for Burma on July 1. With wartime travel conditions, the couple finally arrived in Burma in June of 1946 where Dr. Hare served as principal of Myamungmya and Ohn Daw schools.
After serving a second term as principle of Raymond Memorial Training School in Falakata, India, Leonard and Esther, with children Penny and Dennis, moved to Takoma Park, Md., in 1956. In 1961, Dr. Hare graduated with a ph.d. in botany from the University of Maryland. He served as professor in the Biology Department of Andrews University from 1961 until his retirement in 1986. Retirement for the Hares was a continuation of a life of learning, filled with gardening, photography, computing and exciting trips to destinations from Australia to the Amazon, Iceland to the Middle East.
Dr. Hare is survived by his loving wife, Esther, his daughter, Penny (Kenneth) Tkachuck of Chicago, as well as by niece, Debbie Eisele and nephew, Steve Feigner.
He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis Ray Hare, in 2007.
Donna Marie Nash
JONES - Donna's life began on July 15, 1955, in Paw Paw, the daughter of Donald D. Ferrier and Helen M. (Mead) Ferrier-Head. After graduation from high school and attending college, Donna worked as a home health-care provider. She was united in marriage to Jimmie Nash on Aug. 30, 1975, at the First Christian Church in Dowagiac. Donna was a member of the Dowagiac Eagles. She loved all sorts of crafts. Donna painted, crocheted, sewed and did pottery.
Her greatest joy was her family, which includes her husband of 33 years Jimmie Nash of Jones; her mother, Helen Head of Dowagiac; her son, John Nash of Jones; sister, Patricia Ann Waterson of Dowagiac; and brother, Eugene Raymond Ferrier of Oklahoma, and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and many friends. Donna passed away on Saturday, July 25 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo.
She was preceded in death by her father, Donald D. Ferrier and a brother, Donald D. Ferrier Jr.
Her family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, Dowagiac, where her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m., led by Pastor Kirby Johnson of the Howardsville Gospel Chapel. She will be laid to rest in Poe Cemetery at a later date. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to her husband Jimmie.
Hazel Lavera (Murphy) Ward
SOUTH HAVEN - Hazel Lavera (Murphy) Ward was born on May 26, 1926, in Hayti, Mo., to Della and John Murphy, where she was the youngest of 15 children. She spent the majority of her young life in Missouri. She married young and had four children: Gloria Jean, Sue, (Melton) Ray and (Michael) Steven. She divorced in 1951 and came to live with relatives in Benton Harbor, where she met the love of her life, Howard Ward. They married in 1954 and had two daughters, Lynne and Darlene. The family all lived together in Hartford.
Hazel was an excellent cook, and in the 1960s and '70s, worked at the A&W Root Beer Stand in Hartford, where son, Steve, and daughter, Lynne, occasionally worked too. It was a great family affair. She later became a cook for Hartford Public Schools, where she worked for 10 years and retired from in 1984.
Hazel and Howard were soul mates and did everything together, which later included camping. They loved to go to campgrounds and meet their camping buddies, comparing campers. Sadly, Howard passed away in December 1993, just three weeks shy of their 40th wedding anniversary. Hazel spoke of him often and missed him terribly.
Hazel was very active in her church, Watervliet First United Methodist Church, where she joined a team of ladies that cleaned the church, participated in bible study and especially enjoyed the potlucks. Her green bean casserole was always a hit!
In June 2009, Hazel suffered a stroke and her health declined. She was transferred to Countryside Nursing Home in South Haven. All of her children had the chance to visit with her in the weeks before her death, sharing fond memories and expressing their love for her and for each other. Her daughter, Darlene was at her side when she peacefully passed away the morning of July 23, 2009.
Surviving are all of her six children: Gloria Miller of Decatur, Sue (Mike) Duffy of Keeler, Ray (Beverly) Cole of St. Joseph, Steve (Bernadette) Cole of Traverse City, Lynne (Tim) Melvin of Vicksburg and Darlene (James) Henderson of Hartford. She is survived by a multitude of grandchildren, a number of great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, all of her 14 brothers and sisters, and three grandchildren: Pierce Hollenbeck of Decatur, Lisa Duffy of Hartford and Mark Duffy of Keeler. She will be remembered for her great love of family, friends and the Lord.
Visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, July 28, at 1 p.m. at Calvin Funeral Home, 8 East Main St., in Hartford. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. Cremation has already taken place. Burial will be in Fairview Memorial Cemetery in Watervliet.
There will be a funeral luncheon at the Watervliet First United Methodist Church, 8315 Verlynda Drive, provided by the Ladies of the Church, immediately following interment. Friends and family are invited to attend and share memories of Hazel's wonderful life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made the the Watervliet First United Methodist Church.
Barbara Jean Roy
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Barbara Jean Roy, 83, of Berrien Springs, died Friday, July 24, 2009 at home, surrounded by the love and care of her family.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, at Pioneer Memorial Church on the campus of Andrews University. Committal services will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery, Berrien Springs. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, at Legacy Family Funeral Services - Matthew R. Barbara was born March 13, 1926, in Kenmore, N.Y., to Harold and Alvira (Durkin) Lamy Sr. On June 29, 1947, she married Edmond E. Roy, who survives. The couple enjoyed over 62 years of marriage together. Barbara, a registered nurse, was employed at University Medical Specialties before retirement in 1999.
Barbara enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, cross stitching and travel. She was an organizer of senior activities in the Berrien Springs area.
In addition to her loving husband, Edmond, survivors include two daughters, Brenda (Terry) DeGrave of Collegedale, Tenn. and Debbie (Jon) Anderson of Grand Rapids; one son, Gary (Lettie) Roy of San Bernardino, Calif.; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Harold "Jack" Lamy Jr.
Doris June James
ST. JOSEPH - Doris June James, 81, of St. Joseph, died Tuesday, July 14, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center after an illness.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, July 28, in Rose Hill Cemetery, Berrien Springs with the Rev. Gary L. Miller officiating. Friends may leave condolences at www.legacyfuneral.com. Legacy Family Funeral Services - Matthew R. Purchase Chapel handled arrangements.
Doris was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Toledo, Ohio, to Fred and Fern (Duncan) Kurth. Also in Toledo on April 20, 1948, she married Thomas James who passed before her on Aug. 16, 2001.
Doris had been a hospital secretary before retiring. She loved her family and friends, traveling, listening to books on CD and visiting with her daughter's dog Isobel.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Meredith) Steele of Benton Harbor and Claudia Rubin of Toledo; one son, Ronald James of St. Joseph; as well as 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by one daughter, Pamela Starr in 2004 and one grandson, Christopher Partlo in 1993.
Molly Andrews-Khan
ST. JOSEPH - Mary Ann "Molly" Andrews-Khan, 78, of St. Joseph passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
A service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 914 Lane Drive in St. Joseph. Funeral arrangements are with Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
Molly was born on April 30, 1931, in Joliet, Ill., to Edward Hutchison and Ruth (Reid) Hutchison. She married Aman U. Khan on July 25, 1994, in St. Joseph.
Molly is survived by her husband, Aman Khan, and former husband, Robert Andrews and their five children - Stephen (Ann Alden) Andrews of Richmond, Va., Elizabeth Andrews of Stevensville, Douglas (Cynthia) Andrews of Ypsilanti, Mich., Mark (Karen) Andrews of Birmingham, Mich., and Sarah Andrews of Ann Arbor, Mich. She is also survived by two sisters, Susan (Edward) Dublin and Carol (William) Gourley, both of Wilmette, Ill., and 16 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Victor Hutchison.
Molly lived a generous, beautiful and full life. Her dedication to family, friends and humanity was firmly based on her faith in God. After raising her own children, she taught "her special kids" at Blossomland Learning Center in Berrien Springs, for 15 years. Molly was famous for her ever-present sense of humor. Many years ago, while on her hands and knees scrubbing the entryway floor, two religious solicitors knocked on the door asking her, "Have you found Jesus?" Without missing a beat, Molly replied, "Gee, have you lost him again?"
Molly will be greatly missed on this Earth, but is now with her Lord, and at peace. Her family and friends will forever love and remember her for her legacy of unconditional love.
