Norman E. Bannow
DOWAGIAC - Norman's life began on June 18, 1936 in Dailey, Mich., the son of Albert and Lillian (Palzer) Bannow. He was a 1955 graduate of Dowagiac Central High School. Norman served his country in the Michigan National Guard for nine years. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Mott on April 7, 1956, in Dowagiac.
Norman was a deputy sheriff and detective with the Cass County Sheriff's Department for 22 years and worked for the department for another four years part time. He was an excellent woodworker, making much of the furniture in the family home. Norm was a member of the wood carvers club and recently was working on hand carved canes.
His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife of 53 years Carolyn Bannow of Dowagiac; his children, Patricia Mellen of Edwardsburg, David (Merrilyn) Bannow of Jones and Thomas (Lori) Bannow of Dowagiac; 10 grandchildren, Heather Matthews, Douglas Matthews, Amber Wiler, Amanda Mellen, Scott Mellen, Joshua Bannow, Kyle Bannow, Justin Bannow, Caitlin Bannow and Kelsey Bannow; great-grandchildren, Brandon Hatch, Jared Hatch, Lauryn Hatch and Douglas Matthews Jr.; mother-in-law, Vivian Mott of Dowagiac; sister, Sherry Wade of Dowagiac, and brother, Dennis (Colleen "Beanie" ) Bannow of Dowagiac.
Norman passed away on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wilfred and Richard Bannow.
His family will receive friends on Monday from 12 to 2 p.m. at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, Dowagiac where his funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, led by former Sheriff Paul Parrish. He will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery following the services. Memorial donations may be directed to the donor's choice.
Leon Boucha Lloyd Sr.
BENTON HARBOR - Leon Boucha Lloyd Sr., 51, of Benton Harbor departed this life Tuesday, Aug.18, 2009, at home, leaving loving memories in the hearts of his mother and stepfather, Mary Lloyd and Vernon Wade; two children, Terica (Cottrell) Tyler and Leon (Tamara) Lloyd Jr.; two grandchildren, Terrance and Morgan Tyler; three sisters, Priscilla Lloyd, Valerie (Joseph) Bermudez and Vanessa Lloyd; three brothers, Dale (Helen) Lloyd, Reginald Lloyd and Gary Lloyd, favorite aunt, Annie Mae Hall and a very large host of family and friends.
Leon was born to the union of Mary and the late LeeDale Lloyd on June 17, 1958, in Benton Harbor.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Service: 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Robbins Brothers Funeral Home. Burial will follow the service in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores.
Beatrice Fallis
BANGOR - Beatrice Fallis, 89, of Bangor passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, at South Haven Community Hospital.
The family will meet friends on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. with Pastor John Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow in Arlington Hill Cemetery, Bangor.
Beatrice was born May 31, 1920, in Huntsville, Ala., the daughter of Alfred and Georgia (Wade) Acklen. She lived in Chicago most of her life, where she worked for the U.S. Postal Service, retiring in 1981. In 1951, she married William Fallis and they moved to Bangor in 1983.
Surviving are three nephews, Alfred, Lamont, Bobby; and many great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 2003, and four sisters.
Vitus P. Frazier
WATERVLIET - Vitus' life began June 12, 1936, in Watervliet. He spent his lifetime in Watervliet. As an adult, he worked for Clark Equipment. On Sept. 22, 1958, he married Patricia Reynolds.
His loving family includes four children, Kurt (April) Frazier of Wilmer, Ala., Sandra (Michael) Burtchett of Hartford, Edward (Kelley) Frazier of Cornelius, N.C., and Charles (JoAnna) Frazier of Indianapolis; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles Frazier of Watervliet, Arvid (Henrietta) Frazier of Kalamazoo and Wilson (Beverly) Frazier of Watervliet; three sisters, Marilyn (Howard) Mundt, Adell (Lester) Mundt and Lillian (John) Crumb, all of Watervliet; and several nieces and nephews.
Vitus died Sunday, Aug.16, 2009, at New Orchard Grove Extended Care Centre in Benton Harbor. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Helena (Price) Frazier; two sisters, Evelyn Mundt and Florine Brott; and two brothers, Thomas Frazier and Bruce Frazier.
Friends may visit with Vitus' family from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, with Pastor Brian E. Hall officiating. Cremation will take place.
George Gillard
WATERVLIET - George passed away Sunday, Aug.16, 2009, at Countryside Nursing Home in South Haven. His life began on July 4, 1909, in Covert to William and Pluma (Tacey) Gillard. George was one of nine children.
As a small boy, his family moved from Covert to Watervliet, and George attended Stickney School. As an adult George worked at the Watervliet Paper Company, and while he worked at the paper company, he purchased a farm. On June 27, 1936, he married Ruth Peterson, and together they enjoyed planting fruit and vegetables. George retired from the paper company after working there 43 years and then operated the farm full time with Ruth. Also, in their spare time, George and Ruth enjoyed refinishing furniture. On July 4, George celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.
Together George and Ruth had one daughter, Donna Curtis; two grandchildren, Michael (June) Curtis and Michele (Wiley) Payne; five great-grandchildren, Brad, Rebecca, William, Wiley and Sami; and a niece and four nephews.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ruth; son, Roger; son-in-law, Don Curtis; six sisters, Alice, Agnes, Pluma, Fama, Maggie and Cora; and two brothers, Tom and Erwin.
Friends may visit with George's family from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Aug.18, at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, where funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug.19, with Pastor David Haase officiating. Burial will be in Watervliet Cemetery. Memorials may be made in George's name to UMW at Watervliet First United Methodist Church.
Rev. Robert Foster Sr.
BENTON HARBOR - The Rev. Robert Lee Foster Sr., 72, of Benton Harbor died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center after an illness.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Walter L. Brown officiating. Graveside services with full military honors will take place following the funeral at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich. Purchase Chapel, Berrien Springs, is serving the family.
Robert was born Oct. 11, 1936, in Morehouse, Mo., to Owen and Helen (Miller) Foster. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He had been a machine operator with Auto Specialties Manufacturing. Robert loved music, loved to sing and enjoyed playing keyboard and organ, loved fishing, fixing computers and cars, but he especially loved ministering the Word to people.
Survivors include his loving wife, Mary; five daughters - Delorise (Jessie) Sheilds of Little Rock, Ark., Teresa Foster of Benton Harbor, and Annette Foster, Bettey Coffee and Linda Dear, all of Ohio; eight sons - Alfred of St. Louis, Mo., Corey, Dawyne, Owen, Ray, Edward, all of Ohio, Howard of Little Rock and Tommy Kelly of Ohio; three sisters, Vernice Davis, Esterleen Foster and Gloria Brooks, all of Saginaw, Mich.; two brothers, Alan (Dorothy) of Chicago and Monroe of Sikeston, Mo., and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and godchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by two sons, Greg and Robert Jr.
Ernest W. Weber Jr.
SOUTH HAVEN - Ernest W. Weber Jr., 73, of South Haven died Sunday, Aug.16, 2009, at home.
He was born Feb. 6, 1936, in South Haven, to Ernest and Margaret (Graham) Weber Sr. Ernest married Ada E. Porsche on Nov. 20, 1954, at First Baptist Church in South Haven. He worked for Everett Piano Company as a supervisor and foreman for 34 years. He then worked for Perrigo in Allegan before retiring. Ernest enjoyed NASCAR, and his favorite driver was Johnny Benson. He also enjoyed his CB radio and the Chicago Bears. Ernest and Ada spent many hours refurbishing pianos. They also enjoyed sitting on the back patio watching birds together. Ernest enjoyed going to McDonalds for coffee with his friends. Ernest was a member of the Kibbie Christian Reformed Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his special uncle, A.J. Watkins, and brother-in-law, Bob Schlaak.
He is survived by his wife, Ada Weber of South Haven; one son, Larry Weber of South Haven; two daughters, Susan (Tim) Worline of Gobles and Lori Weber of South Haven; two grandchildren, Amy and Dylan Weber; two sisters, Beverly Jean Schlaak and Evelyn French, both of Holland, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.19, at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home, South Haven. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Kibbie Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. Gerrit Haagsma officiating. Burial will take place in Chambers Cemetery in Geneva Township. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Kibbie Christian Reformed Church.
Wallace Jersey
ST. JOSEPH - Wallace Jersey, 85, of St. Joseph died at 7 a.m. Aug. 17, 2009, at Providence Health Care, Zeeland, Mich., after a five-year-long illness.
Mr. Jersey was born April 18, 1924, in Boyne City, Mich. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was a graduate of General Motors Institute. He retired as owner of W.E. Jersey and Sons Petroleum Distributor. Wallace was a member of the Lions Club, ARRL and the Elks Club.
On Aug. 16, 1947, in Flint, Mich., he married the former Marilynn (Friedl). The were residents of the Benton Harbor-St. Joseph area for 52 years and members of the Fairplain Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Marilynn (Friedl) Jersey; children, Richard Jersey (Margaret), Nancy Merrill (Scott) and Timothy Jersey (Jill); grandchildren, Michael Jersey (Jeri), Christian Merrill and Paul Jersey; great-grandchildren, Skyler, Madelynn and Ella Rose Jersey; and a sister, Lois Auten (Chuck).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Addie Jersey.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday with visitation from 12:30 p.m. Wednesday until time of service at Alexander-Rye Funeral Home, 309 S. Washington Ave., Ludington. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Ludington. Memorials may be made to the Lions Club and Hospice.
