Marianna Radziminski
UNION PIER - Marianna Radziminski, 88, of Union Pier, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009.
Marianna was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Kempno, Poland, to Stefan and Marianna (Kokot) Bzdak and taught school in Germany after World War II. She married Joseph Radziminski in Chicago, and in 1979, they moved from Chicago to make their home in Union Pier. Marianna was artistic, completing many craft projects, needlework wall hangings, and knitting beautiful afghans. She enjoyed spending time with her family and adored her grandchildren.
Marianna is survived by her son, John Radziminski of Union Pier and his wife Pearl; grandchildren, Rachel Corcoran and her husband Kevin of Altadena, Calif., and Jordan Radziminski of La Canada, Calif.; sister, Apolina Reszke of Huntley, Ill.; nephews, Ted Reszke, Stan Reszke, Mike Reszke and wife, Alexandra; great-nephew, Matthew, and great-nieces, Elizabeth and Sarah.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, in 1991, and by her brother, Piotr Bzdak, in 2008.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township, with Mr. Charles McKelvy as celebrant. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday at Pobocik Funeral Home in Three Oaks.
Charles Dean Radke
STEVENSVILLE - Charles Dean Radke, 66, of Stevensville died unexpectedly at home on Aug. 20, 2009. Friends may visit with the family today, Thursday, Aug. 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Friday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Stevensville United Methodist Church on 5506 Ridge Road in Stevensville. Committal services will take place at Hickory Bluff Cemetery, Stevensville, following the service.
Chuck was born Feb. 5, 1943, in St. Joseph, Michigan. His parents were Albert and Kathryn (Schmall) Radke. Chuck was raised on a farm in Bainbridge Township and was very proud of his rural background. He attended a one-room school prior to entering and subsequently graduating from Eau Claire High School in 1961.
Chuck enjoyed and excelled at outdoor sports including football, track, softball and fishing. He was a Michigan High School basketball official and head football coach at St. Joseph Jr. High School. He graduated from Western Michigan University, receiving first a bachelor's and then a master's degree in biology.
He was a science teacher at St. Joseph Jr. and Sr. High School, where he earned the respect of his co-workers and especially his students, teaching not only the sciences, but life-guiding skills.
Chuck also maintained a real estate rental business while teaching and after retirement. The real estate business required his jack-of-all-trade and skills, which involved interaction with local zoning policies.
Chuck developed a passionate interest in John Deere tractors during the last 20 years. During that time he completely restored several tractors and displayed them at shows and county fairs and participated in many local parades. He was an active member of the local two cylinder club and was on the Berrien County Fair tractor pulling board. Chuck consistently won top weight class tractor pulls at numerous local county and multi-state area fairs. He also competed in National Tractor Pullers Association pulls. He recently, on Aug. 17, 2009, three days before his death, competed and won two weight classes and placed second in a third top weight farm stock class.
He was a member of the Stevensville United Methodist Church.
Chuck was married for over 20 years to the love of his life, Barbara. They were constantly together throughout his many interests.
Besides his loving wife, Barbara, Chuck is survived by his son, Brett of New Castle, Colo.; three sisters, Marilyn (Dave) Nolen of Columbia, Tenn., Charlene Hafer of Stevensville and Linda (Rob) Fisher of Berrien Springs; two brothers, Ronald of East Lansing, Mich., and Dennis (Marcia) of Pierson, Mich.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and special aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to the donor's choice.
Thomas Weeden
HARTFORD - Thomas Weeden, 54 of Spanish Fort, Ala., formerly of Hartford, passed away Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, as a result of an automobile accident near Mobile, Ala., where he had made his home for the past 30 years.
Thomas was born Oct. 29, 1954, the son of Merritt and Louise Weeden, formerly of Hartford.
Thomas is survived by his sons, Jeffrey Weeden and Jason Weeden, and a daughter, Misty Hill, all of Spanish Fort. He is also survived by his mother, Louise Weeden of Paw Paw; brothers Lee (Dorla) Weeden of Jenks, Okla., and William (Marjorie) Weeden of Hartford; and sisters Merry Link, Janyce Mack and Barbara Carpenter, all of Paw Paw. Also surviving are Wendy's sisters, Vicky Russell, Kim Trott and Robyn (Larry) Larsen of Hartford; brothers Joe Walton of Florida and Scott Brubaker of Hartford; and many nieces and nephews.
Thomas was preceded in passing by his wife, Wendy Weeden, his father, Merritt Weeden, and a brother, Fredrick Weeden.
Tom, as he was known in Spanish Fort and by his friends in Hartford, loved to work on cars and loved auto racing. He made his living as an auto mechanic.
After services in Alabama, Tom's remains have been flown back to Michigan, where a service to honor his memory will be held on Monday, Aug. 31, at the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, where visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a funeral service to follow. Pastor Timothy Nyhuis of the Hartford Federated Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
Mildred R. Pfliger
BRIDGMAN - Mildred Rose Pfliger, 86, of Bridgman passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at Jordan's Life Care Center, Bridgman.
A private family graveside service will be held in Ruggles Cemetery, Baroda. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be given to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph, MI 49085.
Mrs. Pfliger was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Bridgman, the daughter of the late Alfred and Alma (Marme) Lange. On March 21, 1942, she married Herbert O. Pfliger. He preceded her in death on March 8, 2007.
Survivors include a son, Terry Pfliger of Bridgman; four grandchildren - Daniel (Nathalie) Pfliger, Julie Pfliger, Caroline Pfliger and Katharine (Todd) Vogel; two great-grandchildren - Lilianne Boucher-Pfliger and Bradley Vogel; a nephew, Jim Pfliger of Georgia; and a niece, Jane Petrak of Florida.
Mildred was also preceded in death by two brothers - Raymond Lange and Edward Lange.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Hwy., Bridgman.
Joan 'Joann' Ferguson Hall
BENTON HARBOR - Joan "Joann" Ferguson Hall was born March 25, 1940, in Benton Harbor to the union of Thomas Staples and Lucille Thomas. She was noted for her love of music. Joann was gifted to play many instruments and had the opportunity to play with Jr. Walker and the All-Stars. She enjoyed the casino and playing bingo.
Joann passed Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009.
She leaves to mourn her passing one brother, Anthony Sullivan; and special cousins Myrleen Johnson and Pam Ward.
A memorial service will be held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, in the Chapel of Family Funeral Home, Benton Harbor.
Edward J. Werdowatz
ST. JOSEPH - Edward J. Werdowatz, 88, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009, at his home in St. Joseph.
A memorial service with an Elk's Service celebrating his life will be held at 7 p.m. Dec. 17 at the Dey-Florin Funeral Home, 2506 Niles Ave., St. Joseph, with Pastor Billy Long officiating. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
Edward was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Benton Harbor, and was one of three children to John and Katherein Werdowatz. He owned and operated the Werdowatz Jewelry Store in St. Joseph. He and his wife, Marie, had two daughters, Nancy and Lisa. Edward was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Additionally, he was a member of the Elks Club, American Legion and AMVETS. Edward served in the U.S. Army in San Diego, where he operated the Morse Code. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to turn a bad situation into good. He also enjoyed music. Most of all, Edward will be remembered for being a close family man who cherished his family.
Edward is survived by his wife, Marie; daughter, Lisa Werdowatz of Coloma; grandchildren, Jennifer Leigh Collis, Jaime Leigh Collis, Jacqueline Michelle Collis, Mark Hampton Jr., Matthew Hampton and Alyssa Hampton; and by six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy, and by his siblings, Marie and Joe Werdowatz.
