Philip H. Peterson
SOUTH HAVEN - Philip H. Peterson, 87, died Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at River Ridge Retirement Village in South Haven.
He was born Feb. 15, 1922, in Fennville, to Fred and Leora (Marelius) Peterson.
Philip graduated from South Haven High School in 1940.
Philip married Mary E. Stuckum on Nov. 22, 1948, in South Haven.
Philip worked as a foreman for Michigan Gas Utilities.
He enjoyed watching television and doing crossword puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife - Mary E. Peterson; and brother, William F. Peterson.
He is survived by his three sons - John P. (Danah) Peterson of Portage, Ind., Robert A. (Janice) Peterson and Donald J. Peterson, both of South Haven; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, M. Joyce (Meryl) Cross of Lawrence.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home, South Haven.
Funeral services will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with the Rev. Harold F. Filbrandt officiating.
Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery at 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Memorial contributions can be made to South Haven Hospice at Home.
Margaret Miller VanBrocklin
ST. JOSEPH - Margaret Miller VanBrocklin, 86, of St. Joseph passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph.
Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home in St. Joseph with prayers recited at 5:30 p.m.
Donations may be made to MADD, The Humane Society of Berrien County or Animal Aid.
Maggie was born on March 27, 1923, in Lenoir City, Tenn.
Shortly after graduation she moved to St. Joseph.
It was here, in 1941, she met and married the "love of her life, " Joseph Marne Miller.
After the death of her first husband in 1965, she met and married Merlin VanBrocklin.
In 1968, they purchased Williams and Company Jewelers, which they operated until his death in 2000.
Surviving are her children: Jack (Dee) Miller and Richard (Peggy) Miller, both of St. Joseph, Judith Maruk (Dana) Sheldon, Berrien Springs, Deborah L. (Douglas) Slager, Kalamazoo and Douglas J. (Debra) Miller, Benton Harbor; two stepchildren, Kenneth VanBrocklin of Sturgis and Marilyn VanBrocklin of Niles; son-in-law, Raymond Maruk; and her devoted and special companion dog, Shadow.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William Sorrells; one nephew, David Miller; daughter-in-law, Nanci Miller; and one grandson, Scott Miller.
Margaret McDonald
HARTFORD - Margaret's life began Aug. 5, 1947.
She passed away Oct. 23, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.
Cremation has taken place and the family will have a memorial service to honor her memory at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford.
Pastor Timothy Nyhuis of the Hartford Federated Church will officiate.
The family has entrusted the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with handling the arrangements.
Margaret was born Aug. 5, 1947, in Russell, Ark., the daughter of Charles and Bonnie (Jones) Rains.
Margaret loved to play bingo, go to garage sales and go to cookouts so she could be around her family. She was a very special grandmother and great-grandmother.
She loved all of her grandchildren and great-grandchild, including the one on the way, and was loved by all of them back.
She formerly was employed at Collins and Ackmans until their closure.
Margaret is survived by her children: Tracy (Jim) Johnson of Hartford and Stanley (Amy) McGrew of North Charleston, S.C.; eight grandchildren: Kevin (Courtney Prince) McGrew, Erica Johnson, Sarah (Jeremy) McGrew, Emily McGrew, Becky DeLoach, Tucker McGrew, Molly McGrew and Payton McGrew; one great-grandchild: Ethin McGrew, and a second on the way.
Margaret was also survived by four brothers, four sisters, numerous nieces and nephews, and two special friends, Kenny Wilson and Carol Applegate.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Travis E. Fleming
COLOMA - Travis E. Fleming, 85, of Coloma died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, at his residence.
Services celebrating his life will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Red Arrow General Baptist Church in Benton Harbor.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma.
Burial with military honors will be in Crystal Springs Cemetery.
Donations in memory of Travis may be made to Hospice at Home or to the church.
Travis was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Tupelo, Miss., to Thomas B. and Nora Ann (Ridge) Fleming.
He served in the Air Force during World War II and retired in 1986 as a foreman at Whirlpool Display after 28 years of service.
Travis was a devout Christian who helped build several churches over the years, serving as a deacon and vocalist since 1953.
He loved fishing and could often be found strumming his guitar and singing to Elsie.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie Needham Fleming, whom he married after his first wife, Maxine, died in 1994; one son, Travis Bruce (Lucille) Fleming of Carol Stream, Ill.; three daughters, Patricia Ann (Jim) Evans of VanBuren, Ark., Rita Carol Fleming of Benton Harbor and Glorenda Joyce "Ryn" (Mike) Morse of Coloma. Also surviving is one sister, Lillian Ratlaff of O'Fallon, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Thomas, Shannon, Kim, Michelle, Rich, Brandon, Ryan, Tabris; and a host of great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Rhonda Lee Pecoraro; four brothers; and four sisters.
Alice M. Day
GOBLES - Alice M. Day, 97, of Gobles passed away Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, at Bronson Lakeview Hospital, Paw Paw.
Mrs. Day was born Aug. 11, 1912, in Kalamazoo and resided in this area the majority of her life, where she was a member of the Gobles United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, decorating her house, flowers and flower arrangements.
She bowled many years in leagues at Gobles, Paw Paw and Allegan.
She had worked six years at the Variety Store and 38 years at the Gobles Pharmacy where at age 87 she had to quit because she fell and cracked her ankle.
Surviving are two daughters, Marlene (Walter) Krajewski of Paw Paw, Jean Brownell of Niles; one son, Marvin (Dolores) Day of Niles; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton, in 1985.
The family will meet friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Gobles Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Mary Beth Rhine officiating.
Interment will be in Robinson Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Gobles United Methodist Church.
Johnnie Spencer McDaniel
BANGOR - Johnnie Spencer McDaniel, 62, of Bangor passed away Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009, at Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo.
He was born Dec. 31, 1946, in Trumann, Ark.
"Mac, " as he was known by family and friends, was retired from Zimmerman Heating and Plumbing of Kalamazoo.
He was an avid hunter, a devoted husband and father and loving grandpa.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia (Frederick), whom he married March 7, 1977; five children, Alan (Judy) Roggow, Adam (Joy) McDaniel, Joe (Jan) Roggow, Jodi McDaniel and Becky McDaniel.
Also surviving are 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Beverly (Ernie) Sandberg; a brother, Mike (Marilyn) McDaniel; and his beloved dog, Thumper.
The family will meet friends today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Robert Wondergem officiating.
Following his wishes, cremation will follow the services.
