Helen Colleen Toye
ST. JOSEPH - Helen Colleen Toye, 64, of St. Joseph and Lebanon, Pa., died Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dey Florin Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to the Berrien County Humane Society.
Colleen was born Oct. 8, 1936, the daughter of Sterling and Agnes Whitman of Lebanon.
She graduated from Lebanon High School in 1954. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church (Annex).
She is survived by her husband, Francis J. Toye Jr.; her sisters - Jackie Whitman, Jean and husband, George Sirola, Nancy and husband, John Gerlach; her brother, Richard and wife, Gladice Whitman; her daughters - Jodie Anderson and companion, Jim Kolenko, Jackie and husband, Neil Lynch, Janine and husband, Robert Wade; step-daughter, Erin and husband, John Bitting; two stepsons - Michael Toye and Kevin and wife, Rhonda, Toye.
She had 13 grandchildren who will miss her terribly, and last but not least, her pets Sonny, Missy, Max, Mitty and Sparkle.
She was a wonderful wife, mother, and nanny. Her grandchildren truly believe she is now with all the angels in heaven.
Charles A. Baker
STEVENSVILLE - Charles A. Baker, 91, formerly of Stevensville, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Jordan's Nursing Home, Bridgman.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Dey-Florin Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, St. Joseph Elks BPOE 541 (365 Bank Fund), or Benton Harbor Lions Club.
Mr. Baker was born May 10, 1909, in St. Joseph. He was employed for 26 years as the chief engineer at Gast Manufacturing, and he was also the assistant chief at Wade Electric in Sturgis. Mr. Baker was a member of Pilgrim First United Church of Christ, St. Joseph. He was a life member of St. Joseph Elks 541, the Berrien County Industrial Club, Sunday Evening Club, and a former member of the Economics Club and Benton Harbor Exchange Club.
Survivors include: his wife, Olga "Peg" Baker, whom he married April 27, 1968, in Benton Harbor; daughter, Kay Charlene (Lewis) Miller of Annapolis, Md.; sons - Barry Lee (Phyllis) Baker of Coloma, Robert Craig (Alice) Baker of Watervliet; niece, Alice (Ed) Wyman of Michigan City, Ind.; nephew, Gary (Ellen) Baker of Lakeview, Mich.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Helen Shively Baker, who died in 1964; and his parents, Claude and Mabel Baker; a sister, Mrs. Marjorie Morse; and a brother, Noel Baker.
Dortha M. Clark
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Dortha M. Clark, 89, of Jackson, Mich., formerly of Berrien Springs, passed away Jan. 14, 2001, at home.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 18, at Watson Funeral Chapel, Jackson, Mich. The Rev. Jim Keat officiated. Interment will take place today at 3 p.m. at Franklin Cemetery, Berrien Center. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Jackson and Oaklawn.
Mrs. Clark was preceded in death by her husband, Donald R. Clark; one son, James E.; one daughter, Lois Warfield; and two grandsons - Christopher and Donald Warfield.
Survivors include: two daughters - Betty (Doug) Money of Jackson and Leona (Mel) Wofford of Oregon; a son, John (Marilyn) Clark of Charlotte, Mich.; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wilbur Washburn.
Mrs. Clark was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and the New Covenant Living Church.
Herbert D. Stedman
BENTON HARBOR - Herbert Dean Stedman, 84, of Sierra Madre, Calif., formerly of Benton Harbor, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2001. He was a retired civil engineer from the city of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, and was founder and previous owner of Petite Beauty Salon in Sierra Madre, Calif.
He is survived by his daughter, Lolita J. Brady; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three brothers - Earl, Gardner and Donald Stedman.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Lolita G. Stedman, and his daughter, Sally Joanne Seip.
Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, with funeral services on Thursday, April 12, at 10 a.m. at Live Oak Mortuary, 200 E. Duarte Road, Monrovia, Calif. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society.
Philip C. Rice
STEVENSVILLE - Philip C. Rice, 83, of Stevensville, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away Thursday, June 14, 2001, at Lakeland Medical Center, St. Joseph.
Mr. Rice was born on April 16, 1918, in Grand Rapids, the son of Charles and Mamie Hoehno Rice. He graduated from Central High School, Grand Rapids, class of 1937, and worked as a structural engineer for 30 years. He was a talented trumpet player who played with his band at many locations in Southwest Michigan.
Survivors include his wife, Lucille; five children - Carol Ramsay of Jenison, Phillip W. Rice of Anchorage, Alaska, Jim (Dawn Marie) Rice of Florida, Sandi White of Stevensville, Diane Dillard of Baroda; his grandchildren - Jade, Jay, Jason, Kalli, Kevin, Shaya; two great-grandchildren, Tyler and Katie.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Heather.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, where the family will receive friends on hour prior to the service at Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Service, 4291 Cascade Road SE at Kenmoor, Grand Rapids, east of I-96. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to a charity of one's choice would be appreciated.
Tom Saylor
EAU CLAIRE -- Tom Saylor was born on March 9, 1931, in Whitecastle, La., to the late Sanders Saylor and Doretha James. While resting peacefully late Wednesday night on April 10, 2002, the angels quietly guided him from this life to meet his savior.
In 1982, Tom moved to Eau Claire to be closer to two of his sisters, Irma, Viola, their families and friends.
Throughout the years, Tom performed various jobs in farm and agricultural within the Southwest area.
Twice a widower did not stop Tom from giving anyone he met the biggest and sweetest smile that proved to be contagious. There was nothing he enjoyed better than being surrounded by family members and helping them with their flower gardens.
Those whom will miss that smile and cherish his memories include: four sisters, Leona Green, Leola Bolton, Shirley Edwards, and Dorothy Burke, all of Whitecastle, La.; two brothers, Lionel Saylor, of Whitecastle, La., and Sanders Saylor of Cleveland, Ohio; six nieces, Shirley Brent, Lois (Dr. Harzel) Taylor, Barbara Jean (Will) Jones and Barbara Ann Brown, all of Benton Harbor; Priscella (Eddie) Smith of Hemstead, N.Y., and Irma (Rogers) Simon of Ellicott City, Md.; two nephews, Robert (Felecia) Williams of Benton Harbor and Milton Smith Jr. of Rancho Caumonga.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, two wives and three sisters, Irma Smith, Earlean Leonard and Viola Taylor.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 18, at Progressive Baptist Church, 245 Pipestone St., Benton Harbor, with visitation one hour before services. Arrangements entrusted to Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.
Bernadine Hopmoen
COLOMA -- Bernadine Hopmoen, 72, of Coloma passed away Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2002, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Ohio Masonic Benevolent Endowment Foundation, Five Masonic Drive, Springfield, Ohio, 45504-3658.
Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet was in charge of arrangements.
Bernadine was born Nov. 3, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio, to William and Berneice (Sorrells) Shaner.
She is survived by one son, Knute (Tami) Hopmoen of Columbus, Ohio; and two daughters -- Heide Hopmoen of Coloma and Diana Childress of Toledo; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
