Guy R. 'Bob' VanderMeer
BRIDGMAN -- Guy R. "Bob" VanderMeer, 80, of Bridgman, formerly of Kalamazoo, died Sunday evening, April 14, 2002.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 19, at Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Norm Thomasma officiating. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Chikaming Township. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home of Niles.
Mr. VanderMeer was born July 20, 1921, in Three Oaks, to Guy and Sophia (Brower) VanderMeer. He graduated from Three Oaks High School in 1939. Mr. VanderMeer lived in Kalamazoo most of his life, where he was employed by Shinville Associates before his retirement. He was a 40-year member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324. Summers brought time on Rainbow Lake in Baldwin, Mich., where anytime was good for fishing at his cabin. Everyone wondered how he could just sit for hours and look at the lake. Winter was enjoyed at Baldwin as well, with time spent ice fishing and deer hunting. He was known as Big PaPa to great-grandchildren Griffen and Emily, who brightened every day for him. We love and miss you dad.
Survivors include his children, Sandra Pschigoda of Bridgman, Ronald VanderMeer of St. Joseph, and Patricia Weaver of St. Joseph; grandchildren, Bret Pschigoda, Kelly Pschigoda, Jason VanderMeer, Susan VanderMeer, Jennifer Singh and Joni Weaver; great-grandchildren -- Griffen Pschigoda and Emily Pschigoda; and his sister, Francis Weller of Waco, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Pearl Gridley.
Victor W. Schultz
MATTAWAN -- Victor W. Schultz, 80, of Mattawan passed away Saturday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Battle Creek.
Victor was born March 19, 1921, in Benton Harbor, the son of Edward and Mary Schultz. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force as a P-51 pilot in the North African and the European theaters.
He was a fruit farmer in the Mattawan area for 51 years, a charter member of St. John Bosco Church, Mattawan, life member of the P-51 Pilots Association, member of the Reserve Officers Association, American Legion, McGowan-Johnson Post No. 68, Paw Paw, and the V.F.W. in Benton Harbor. On Nov. 10, 1945, in Benton Harbor, Victor was united in marriage to the former Dorothy R. Leitz, who survives. Also surviving are three sons -- Thomas Schultz of Mattawan, Roger A. (Pamela) Schultz of Vicksburg and William W. (Denise) Schultz of Mattawan; four grandchildren, William, Robyn, Daniel and Andrew; brother, Richard Schultz of Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw, where a vigil service will be held at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. John Bosco Church, Mattawan, with Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Kassian celebrant. Interment in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Martha E. Atherton
THREE OAKS -- Martha E. Atherton, 94, of Three Oaks, died Friday evening, Dec. 14, 2001, at Silverbrook Manor in Niles.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. EST Monday, Dec. 17, at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Three Oaks, with the Rev. Father Donald Suberlak, C.R. as celebrant. Graveside services and interment will follow at 1 p.m. CST, in St. Joseph Cemetery in Aurora, Ill. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, or to St. Mary Church. Pobocik Funeral Home Connelly-Noble Chapel in Three Oaks, is serving the family.
Mrs. Atherton was born on Oct. 21, 1907 in Aurora, Ill. to Peter and Barbara (Theis) Meyer. She married Monte E. Atherton on Nov. 24, 1931 in Aurora. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Atherton was employed as a clerk for the Aurora City Assessors Office, and also for an insurance office and a Savings and Loan, before moving to this area in 1974. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in Three Oaks.
Survivors include: her daughter and son-in-law, Juene and Fred Knutel, of Three Oaks; five grandchildren -- Janet (Brian) Attara of Chicago, Peter (Judy) Knutel of Knox, Ind., Julie (Matt) Ungarino of Metarie, La., Phillip Knutel of Hudson, Mass., and Jennifer Sheldon of Three Oaks; six great-grandchildren -- Tony Tryonis and Nicole Knutel both of Knox, Ind., Luke, Sofia and John Peter Ungarino of Metarie, La., . and Anastasia Sheldon of Three Oaks; and a sister, Lucille Harringe of Angola, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four sisters -- Irene Heimann, Catharine Freidgen, Clara Jaschob, and Hildegard Meyer; and by three brothers -- John, Ralph, and Clarence Meyer.
Maureen Dunning
COLOMA -- Maureen Dunning, 46, of Coloma, died Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Midway Baptist Church, Watervliet, with the Rev. Mark Cowell officiating. Memorial contributions in Maureen's memory may be made to the Midway Baptist Church, South Haven Area Hospice or to Berrien County Cancer Service. Davidson Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Coloma, is serving the family.
Maureen was born Feb. 12, 1955, to Virgil and Helen (Shafer) Dunning in Watervliet. She graduated from Coloma High School in 1973. Until recently, she was employed for several years for Computer Science Corp. at IBM in Durham, N.C.
Survivors include: her mother, Helen of Coloma; one sister, Gloria (Patrick) Yore of Watervliet; a nephew, Scott (Sandie) Yore of Dowagiac; a niece, Kimberly (Rob) Morris of Coloma; two great-nephews -- Scotty and Sean Yore; one great-niece, Madison Morris; many cousins; and special friends -- Rita Tarner, Suzon Williams, Pamela Spaulding, Karen Leitz and Karla.
She was preceded in death by her father, Virgil, in 1997.
Julius "Greiff' Greiffendorf
GRAND JUNCTION - Julius "Greiff" Greiffendorf, 83, of Grand Junction, passed away Monday, Oct. 11, 1999, at his home.
Following his wishes cremation has taken place. A Rosary will be recited at 10:45 a.m., followed by a Memorial Mass at 11 a.m., Saturday at St. Basil Catholic Church, South Haven, with Father John Young as celebrant. The family suggests memorials may be made to either South Haven Area Hospice or St. Basil School Endowment Fund. Arrangements are by Bloomingdale Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home.
Mr. Greiffendorf was born Jan. 13, 1916, in St. Joseph, the son of Julius and Maria Winkle Greiffendorf and resided in this area all of his life. He owned and operated Greiffendorf's Meat Market and Greiff's Car Sales and was an avid sportsman.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Marge; loving sons - Julius "Butch" (Diane) of Breedsville, Tom (Lois) of Grand Junction; beloved grandsons - Julius "Rick" (Sandy) of South Haven; Clay (Janis) of Saginaw; beloved granddaughters - Sister Mary Agnes "Hilary" of Nashville, Tenn., Rachel and Lauren of Grand Junction; four great-grandchildren - Daniel, Jessica, Julius "Ricky" and Brenden; two brothers - Walter of Bloomingdale and Alvin (Betty) of Grand Junction; two sisters - Leona Remington of Bloomingdale and Nancy (Bill) Banks of Greenville; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Ruth and Jane.
Terry L. Richcreek
COLOMA - Terry L. Richcreek, 54, of Coloma died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, at home.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, where friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday. Cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Watervliet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Watervliet Athletic Boosters Club.
Mr. Richcreek was born Aug. 18, 1945, in Coloma to Ernest and Frances (Moser) Richcreek. They both preceded him in death.
He had worked for Richcreek Well Drilling for 30 years and was a member of the Kalamazoo Antique Auto Restorers Club and the Grape Country Model A Club. He was an avid golfer and hunter. While he worked at Stewart's Golf Driving Range and Restaurant a sandwich was named after him, called the "Bomb Burger."Survivors include: a daughter, Rebecca (Gregory) Cassidy of Grand Junction; a son, Erick Richcreek of Hartford; three grandchildren - Nicole, Luke and Kylie; a brother, Lloyd (Barb) Richcreek of Watervliet; and a special friend, Mary Ann Melvin of Watervliet.
Gordon Lewis Brant
BENTON HARBOR - Gordon Lewis Brant, 70, Clackamas, Ore., formerly of Benton Harbor, died March 6, 2000, in Portland, Ore. Arrangements are by Wilhelm Funeral Home, Portland.
Mr. Brant was born June 13, 1929, in Benton Harbor. He retired in 1987 from Whirlpool Corp. as a product inspector and moved to Clackamas in 1998. He was an Air Force veteran.
Survivors include: his wife, Barbara (Leith) Brant of Clackamas; a son, David Brant of Portland; daughters - Denise Albright of Benton Harbor and Cathy Megna of Coloma; son, Gordon Brant Jr. of Hillsboro, Ore.; daughters, Lori Bowdish of Redmond, Wash., and Kim Woulf of Renton, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
James W. Burke Jr.
ST. JOSEPH - James William Burke Jr., 93, of St. Joseph died Sunday morning, June 4, 2000, at Lakeland Continuing Care Center. St. Joseph.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph, of which he was a member. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dey-Florin Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, St. Joseph, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph.
Mr. Burke was born July 1, 1906, in Benton Harbor. He worked for Peter Eckrich and Son as branch manager for 23 years, then bought and operated Burke's Drug Store in Benton Harbor.
Survivors include: his wife, Florence (Spear) Burke, whom he married May 11, 1931; a son, William J. (Teresa) Burke of Stevensville; a daughter, Nancy (John) Miller of Valparaiso, Ind.; a sister, Margaret Lochner of St. Joseph; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
