Madalyn Sherman
Madalyn M. Sherman, 78, of South Haven died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2002 at her home.
She was born Nov. 23, 1923 in South Haven to Milton and Winifred (Williamson) Warren. On Dec. 15, 1946 she married Burt Sherman.
Mrs. Sherman graduated from South Haven High School in 1941 and from Michigan State University in 1945. After graduation she taught at Dowagiac High School. She retired after teaching for 17 years at Covert Public Schools. She was a member of the First Congregational Church. She especially enjoyed her many years with friends at water exercise and her "41ers" group.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Burt; three daughters, Linda (Steve) Marble, Galesburg; Dr. Susan (Jerry) Meeuwenberg, Nunica; Janet (David) Lynam, South Haven; four grandchildren, JB, Jennifer, Eric, and Jaime; a sister, Margie (John) Cornelius, Rice, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Calvin-Starks & Frost Funeral Home of South Haven.
The funeral service for Mrs. Madalyn M. Sherman will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at Calvin-Starks & Frost Funeral Home with Rev. Jeffrey S. Dick officiating. Interment will follow at Lakeview Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 at Calvin-Starks Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Haven Area Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Irene Dise
Irene B. Dise, 80, of Wyoming, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002.
She was born June 20, 1921, to Bert and Bertha (Janowiak) Salik in Grand Rapids.
Mrs. Dise had been a lifelong resident of the Grand Rapids area. She had a passion for flower gardening, enjoyed having coffee with friends and family, and also working crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her son, Terry C. (Cheryl) Dise of Grand Haven; daughter, Barbara (Kevin) Hanrahan of Grand Rapids; 13 grandchildren, including Tyler, Joshua and Mitchell Dise, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Her daughter, Bonnie L. Switzer, preceded her in death on June 28, 1997, and also her brothers, Lloyd, Alexander and Raymond Salik.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Grand Haven.
A funeral service for Mrs. Dise will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton St. S.E., Grand Rapids with Rev. Phillip R. Baerwolf officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with a scripture service at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Zaagman Memorial Chapel. Private interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Wyoming, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to Meals on Wheels Program c/o God's Kitchen in Grand Rapids.
Elsie Tate
Elsie Louise Tate, 86 of Nunica died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002 at her home.
She was born in Bemis, Tenn. on July 15, 1915. On Feb. 23, 1933 she married James Tate in Mississippi and he preceded her in death in 1987.
Mrs. Tate was a homemaker and attended First Congregatonal Church of Fruitport. She was an avid doll collector and enjoyed gardening, wild birds and dancing.
Survivors include her beloved companion, Bryan Richardson, Nunica; two sons, Jimmy (Mecie) Tate, Spring Lake; Bobby (Terry) Tate, Nunica; one daughter, Nancy (Ray) Stewart, Missouri; 10 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Fruitport.
The funeral service for Mrs. Elsie Louise Tate will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, 2002 at the Clock Chapel in Fruitport with Rev. Bob Dennis officiating. Interment at Nunica Cemetery. Friends may meet with the family one hour prior to the service at Clock Funeral Home of Fruitport. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
William VanderSys
William VanderSys, 79, of Spring Lake died early today.
Arrangements will be announced later by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home of Grand Haven.
Paul Porter
Paul Harrison Porter, 49, died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002 at his home in Grand Haven.
He was born in Orlando, Fla. on Nov. 21, 1952 to James C. and Marguerite (Harrison) Porter.
Mr. Porter served his country during the Vietnam Era and also from 1984 to 1989. He had been employed as a truck driver for 28 years until retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Grand Haven VFW Alvin Jonker Post.
Survivors include one daughter, Kyla Rose (Joe) Luis, Murphys, Calif.; two sons, Jimmy Jack Porter and Benjamin Harrison Porter, both of Grand Haven; two grandchildren, Dylan Joseph Luis and Savannah Nichole Luis; two sisters, Lila Mae (Tom) Parks and Bonnie Lane; two brothers, J.C. Porter and Chuck (Kathy) Porter.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Grand Haven.
The memorial service for Mr. Paul Harrison Porter, 49, will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1 at Resurrection Life Church with Pastor Bernie Groendyke officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the family to help defray funeral expenses.
Betty Deremo
Betty Deremo, 91, of Spring Lake died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002 at Shore Haven Nursing Home.
She married Dennis Baker on Oct. 10, 1929. He preceded her in death. She then married Howard Deremo in May 1971. He also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Deremo retired from Gardner-Denver Tool & Die Co. in 1972. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Spring Lake Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her children: William (Carol) Baker of Grand Rapids, Sally (Sydney) Smith of Spring Lake and Beth Jane Gaul of Kalamazoo; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are being handled by Ever Rest Funeral Home & Chapel of Muskegon.
Frances Kramer
Frances Kramer, 87, of Spring Lake died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002.
She was born in Spring Lake on July 25, 1914 to William and Anna (Klaver) Teunis. In April of 1937 she married Louis Kramer in Muskegon.
Mrs. Kramer was a homemaker. She was a member of Berean Church and had served as a volunteer at Love, Inc. and North Ottawa Community Hospital.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Ruth) Kramer and Gerald (Linda) Kramer, both of Spring Lake; one daughter, Betty DuShane of Grand Haven; three sisters, Harriett (Frank) Brown, Grand Haven; Annette Huizenga, Holland and Clara Mohr, Grand Rapids; one brother, Donald (Joyce) Teunis, Grand Haven; eight grandchildren and 13 great-granchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Louis in 1999; her son-in-law, William DuShane and three brothers, George Teunis, William Teunis, Gordon Teunis and one sister, Ella Schwietzer.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Muskegon.
The funeral service for Mrs. Frances Kramer will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Clock Funeral Home Chapel of Muskegon with Rev. Craig Apel and Rev. Dwight Reed officiating. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday at Clock Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berean Church Memorial Fund.
Hazen Wilson
Hazen Wilson, 84, of Grand Haven and Florida died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, in Zephyrhills, Fla.
He was born Feb. 12, 1917, to Gus and Charlotte (Day) Wilson and was a resident of the Tri-Cities all his life.
He married Jacqueline Borchers on May 10, 1946, at the Methodist Church in Grand Haven.
Mr. Wilson graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1937 and worked 41 years at Oldberg A.P. Parts, retiring in 1979. He spent his retirement winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. Mr. Wilson served 4 1/2 years during World War II with the 807 Tank Destroyers in Europe.
He was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church in Zephyrills, Fla., and attended the Nortonville Gospel Chapel in Spring Lake. He was a lifetime member of the VFW 2326 of Grand Haven. Mr. Wilson enjoyed gardening, traveling, playing Euchre and ice fishing.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years; one son, Patrick (Kim) Wilson of Macomb; four daughters, Kay (Dion) Chilberg of Denver, Colo.; Barbara (Jon) Ryan of Tucson, Ariz.; Penny (Roger) Babb of Saranac and Paula (Steve) Padar of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren: Scott (Ellen) Vanderplow, Steven Vanderplow, Stacey Carithers, Christopher (Amy) Babb, and Jennifer and Greg Johnson. Surviving sisters are Ann Wilson, Clarice Lincicum and sister-in-law, Rose Wilson, all of Spring Lake.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, James, Hial and Tom Wilson and one sister, Sara Van Strate.
Arrangements are being handled by VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad of Spring Lake.
A funeral service for Mr. Wilson will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Nortonville Gospel Chapel with Rev. Gary Hashley officiating. Friends may meet the family from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday evening at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake. Interment will be in the Spring Lake Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Stroke Association, VFW 2326 in Grand Haven, and Nortonville Gospel Chapel.
