Joe West Salley Sr.
BENTON HARBOR - Joe West Salley Sr., 86, of Benton Harbor died Jan. 3, 2001, at home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Robbins Brothers Funeral Home, Benton Harbor, where visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Friday. Cremation is scheduled.
Mr. Salley was born Jan. 7, 1914, in Duck Hill, Miss., to the union of Ernest Salley and Alzadia (Moore) Salley. He formerly was employed as a railroad laborer and TV, radio repairman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Otis Re'Ne Salley.
Survivors include: daughters - Pattie (Robert) Shipp, Joyce (Roosevelt) Smith, Telida (William) Mason and Wanda Parham, all of Memphis, Tenn., Jacqueline (James) Cathey of Chicago and Alzalia (Nathaniel) Salley Woodard of Hampton, Va.; sons - Claude (Cheryl) Benton, William Shaw, Joe West (Genendal) Salley, Robert (Betty) Shaw, Charles (Georgia) Salley, all of Memphis, Rev. Otis (Cheryl) Shaw of Oak Park, Ill., Norwell Shaw of Americus, Ga., Samuel Salley of Houston; sister, Hazel Nobel of Stone Mountain, Ga., formerly of Helena, Ark.; and a host of grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Sarah L. Davidson
BENTON HARBOR - Sarah L. Davidson, 83, of Benton Harbor, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the Red Arrow General Baptist Church, Benton Harbor. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, Benton Harbor. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Memorials may be made to the family.
Mrs. Davidson was born Sept. 6, 1917, in Brazil, Tenn., and had lived in this area since 1944. She was employed as a nurse's aide at Mercy Hospital for 26 years. Mrs. Davidson was an active member of the Red Arrow General Baptist Church. She loved crocheting.
Survivors include: her sons - Jim L. (Dolores) Davidson of Union City, Calif., and Harold (Doralee) Davidson of Lawrence; a sister, Nora B. Boone of Eau Claire; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Davidson was preceded in death by her husband, Ted Davidson, in October 1980; a son, James Davidson on Jan. 16, 1995; seven brothers; and one sister.
Celista "Sis' Murphy
KALAMAZOO -- Celista "Sis" Murphy, 89, of Kalamazoo died peacefully on Feb. 11, 2002, at Heartland Health Care Center, Kalamazoo, following a long illness.
Sis was born Sept. 10, 1912, in Glenn, Mich., the daughter of Alfred and Lulu (Culver) Newman. She was a homemaker most of her life, then in her 50s she earned her graduate degree in special education from WMU. Sis taught at Lincoln Elementary School in South Haven for 12 years, retiring at the age of 72. She enjoyed gardening and loved life. Sis was an avid pastel painter and a great cook.
On Sept. 17, 1931, she was united in marriage to H. Vern Murphy. He preceded her in death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and George Newman.
Surviving are two nieces -- Carla (Arnie) Palanca of Kalamazoo and Hallie (Pete) Bess of Battle Creek, Mich.; a nephew, Craig Newman of Fort Myers, Fla.; and several great-nieces and nephews.
Cremation will take place. The family will be present to receive friends Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service 11 a.m. at Betzler Funeral Home, Kalamazoo. Theda McBryde will officiate. Private interment in Taylor Cemetery, Ganges Township.
Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice.
Sterling W. Schrock
ST. JOSEPH -- Sterling William Schrock, 79, of St. Joseph went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 15, 2002, at his home.
He was born on Nov. 26, 1922, in Dixon, Ill., to Sterling D. and Francis Schrock. He grew up in Dixon, and was veteran of World War II, where he served as a B-26 pilot in the European Theater of Operations. He attended the University of Illinois until enlistment in the Army Air Corps. Following World War II, he completed law studies at The John Marshall Law School in Chicago.
He moved to Escanaba, Mich., in 1956 with his wife and family and resided there until 1963. The family then moved to Hancock, Mich., where he served as Prosecuting Attorney for Houghton County for many years.
In 1979, they moved to Okemos, Mich., where he worked as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Michigan under the Honorable Frank Kelley until his retirement in 1990.
In 1997 they moved to St. Joseph, where he spent his remaining years enjoying his grandchildren and being actively involved in Bible Studies at the First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include Ellen, his wife of 56 years; daughter, Priscilla (Paul) Snelling of Hastings, Minn.; sons -- Sterling (Pete and Joanne) Schrock of St. Joseph and John (Sue) Schrock of Grand Ledge, Mich.; daughter, Melinda Lambert of Lansing, Mich.; grandchildren -- Joel, Joshua and Matthew Snelling, Ellen and Madeline Schrock, Katie and Peter Schrock, Shaun and Dale Lambert; and great-granddaughter, Audrianna Snelling.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, 3003 Leco Court, St. Joseph. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Dixon, Ill. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph-Music Fund.
Realor Osler
BENTON HARBOR -- Realor Osler, 82, of Benton Harbor died Aug. 1, 2002, at home.
Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, Aug. 12, at Robbins Brothers Funeral Home, Benton Harbor, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Monday followed by a family hour at 11 a.m. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores.
Mrs. Osler was born Feb. 2, 1920, in Jackson, Miss., to the union of Betty and Turner Bell. She was a homemaker and loving wife and mother. Realor was united in holy matrimony to the late Eather Osler Sr. and to this union 11 children were born.
She is survived by sons -- Eather (Becie) Osler Jr. of Benton Harbor, Robert Osler of Memphis, Tenn., Brandy Milton Osler and Jerry Osler, both of Benton Harbor; daughters -- Betty (James) Osler of Chicago, Emma Jackson Osler, Martha Sue Hudson, Mary Osler and Doretha Osler, all of Benton Harbor; 32 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; sisters -- Kate Bell of Bolivar, Tenn., and Kali Bell of Jackson, Tenn.; brother, Steve Bell of Grand Junction, Tenn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband, Eather Osler Sr., she was also preceded in death by two daughters, Lucy Green and Lou Osler; two sisters, Molly Jones and Holly Bell; and a brother, Buster Bell.
She will be greatly missed.
Virginia (Nower) Agens
BENTON HARBOR -- Virginia C. (Nower) Agens, 86, of Benton Harbor died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Fairplain Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Benton Harbor, where visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Memorials may be made to Benton Harbor Moose Lodge.
Mrs. Agens was born Jan. 31, 1916, in Paw Paw, to Charles and Bernice Nower. She had lived her entire life in this community. She was a member of Benton Harbor Women of the Moose Chapter 405 since 1948. She was also a member of the Academy of Friendship. Mrs. Agens was very active and volunteered thousands of hours to Moose functions. She enjoyed her special lunches and shopping trips with her sister-in-law, Georgia Nower. A very special niece, Mary Nower, devoted and dedicated her time to Virginia's special needs and affairs.
Survivors include: a stepdaughter, Dawn Easterling of Dexter, Mich.; a sister, Shirley Hosner of Benton Harbor; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Agens was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert H. Agens; seven brothers, Vaughn, Rex, Lester, Dale, Charles, Ray and Lee Nower; and by four sisters, Norma M. Utter, Donna O. Eiseman, Ruth A. Day and June A. Dreves.
Sol Goldin
BENTON HARBOR -- Sol Goldin, 93, of Buffalo Grove, Ill., former long-time resident of Benton Harbor, passed away Thursday, Nov. 28, 2002 at his home in Buffalo Grove.
A graduate of Bryant College in 1928, he was retired president of Marketing Affiliates Corp.
Mr. Goldin's distinguished career in the home appliance industry spanned six decades. His service included tenure with major department store retailers such as Jordan Marsh, Goldblatt's, and Sears Roebuck & Co. and 19 years as Retail Marketing Manager with Whirlpool Corp. Following his work with Whirlpool, he founded his own consulting company.
He founded, co-founded and served on the boards of numerous professional organizations. He was chairman of the board and chairman of the executive committee of the Brand Names Foundation, former chairman and trustee of the National Appliance-Radio-TV Dealers Association and a co-founder of the Institute of Appliance Manufacturers. Mr. Goldin wrote numerous columns and articles for professional journals and lectured in the U.S., France, Belgium and Australia.
Mr. Goldin touched many lives, and his personal and professional friendships were varied and enduring. He was fiercely devoted to his family, traveled widely and read voraciously. Although born nearly a century ago, he kept up with all of the social, political and technological changes during his lifetime. At the age of 90 he learned to use a computer and e-mail his friends, and he even conducted a current events discussion group for members of his retirement community.
He was predeceased by Doris, nee Curley, his beloved wife of 62 years in 1992; daughter, Arlene Cavaness in 1997; daughter-in-law, Patricia Goldin in 2000; and grandson, Patrick MacDonald in 1986.
He is survived by daughter, Barbara (James) MacDonald; sons -- Richard (Felicia), Kenneth and Steven; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
