Samuel Patrick Hover
NILES -- Samuel Patrick Hover, infant son of Adam and Melissa (Vanlandingham) Hover of Niles, passed away shortly after birth, Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to Shrine Hospital for Children, 2211 N. Oak Park Ave., Chicago, Ill. 60707. In addition to his parents, Samuel is survived by a sister, Sophia Hover; his grandparents, Paula Vanlandingham of Hartford, Karen (Lance) White of Niles, Greg (Diane) Hover of Niles; great-grandparents, Darlene Tate of Hartford, Emerson and Joan Emmons of Niles; great-great-grandmother, Luella Lewis of Hartford; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Samuel is greatly missed and loved and will remain in our hearts forever.
Roy E. Gardiner
BUCHANAN -- Roy E. Gardiner, 62, of Buchanan, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at West Florida Hospital, Pensacola, following a battle with cancer.
A funeral service celebrating his life will be held 3 p.m. Friday at the Buchanan Church of Christ. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Ralph Rumbaugh American Legion Post 51, Buchanan. At 2:30 p.m. a horse-drawn funeral procession will be led to the church for services at 3 p.m. Those wishing to sign the guestbook or leave messages of encouragement for the family may do so at www.legacyfuneral.com. Roy was born April 21, 1942, in Buchanan, to Forrest and Evelyn (Smith) Gardiner. He was a graduate of New Troy High School. Roy founded and operated Gardiner Well Drilling in Buchanan since the late 1960s. He worked all over Southwest Michigan and in Northern Indiana. He was a talented well driller and loved the work that he did so well.
Roy served his country in the United States Army and was a member of the Buchanan American Legion Post 51. He was also a longtime member of the Buchanan Church of Christ and served on a humanitarian mission trip with Children's Lifeline to Haiti, where he helped to provide water to Haitian families there. He loved spending time with his family and friends, riding his Harley Davison motorcycle and paint horses.
In addition to his parents, of Buchanan, Roy is survived by his wife, Vanessa (Nelson), whom he married May 29, 1996; a stepson, Zachary Manross, and a stepdaughter, Dannelle Manross, both of Buchanan; two brothers -- George (JoAnn) Gardiner of Galien and Forrest (Kim) Gardiner of Buchanan; three sisters -- Nancy (Bill) Herrman and Linda (Ed) Brunke, both of Buchanan, and Lois King of Watervliet.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother, Howard Dean Gardiner.
(Opal) Helen Moore
ST. JOSEPH -- (Opal) Helen Moore, 89, of St. Joseph was called home to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, May 31, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
A service of praise and thanksgiving to God will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 4, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4333 Cleveland Ave., Stevensville. Entombment will be in North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Memorials may be made to Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 3.

Helen was born on Aug. 13, 1914, in South Bend, Ind., to Joseph and Opal (Henderson) Jackson. She spent most of her life in the Twin Cities. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1931, and went on to business school. She worked in the market research department at Whirlpool Corporation, from which she retired in 1969.
Helen married Ronald A. Moore on June 9, 1933, in St. Joseph. Ronald preceded her in death on Nov. 22, 1978.
Helen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Family members were her special treasures, and she will be remembered for her many acts of kindness, her gift of time, and the energy and love she put into all the gifts she sewed and knitted over the years.
Survivors include: son, William (Nancy) Moore, daughter Judith (Kenneth) Vieregge, both of St. Joseph, and son Charles (Mary Jo) Moore of Gladstone, Ore.; 14 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; stepfather, Walter Southworth; sister, Lucille Schramm; brother, Joseph Jackson; stepsister, Charlotte Probst; granddaughter, Leah Moore; and great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Johnson.
Flora Bradley
BENTON HARBOR -- Flora Bradley, 86, of Benton Harbor died at 10:20 p.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at New Orchard Grove Extended Care Centre, Benton Harbor, of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan, with the Rev. Rodney Gulley of New Covenant Community Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, officiating.
Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Friends may call from noon until 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Bradley was born March 27, 1918, in Alachua, Fla., and lived here for the past 63 years, coming from Alachua in 1941. She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Benton Harbor.
In June of 1937, she married James D. Bradley in Alachua. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Albert Robinson and Maggie (Shaw) Robinson; sons -- Joe Bradley and Rooselvelt Bradley; brothers -- James Robinson, Albert Robinson, Elmore Robinson and Oscar Robinson; sisters, Isabella Smith and Willie Mae Garrison.
Survivors include: sons -- Daniel (Barbara) Bradley of Niles and Jimmie Bradley of Benton Harbor; daughter, Pearl Walden of Benton Harbor; 19 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; brothers -- David Robinson of Newberry, Fla., and Nolan Robinson of Groveland, Fla.; and a sister, Margaret Blake, also of Groveland.
Ida Gladys Gilson
COLOMA -- Ida Gladys Gilson, 80, of Muskegon, Mich., died Jan. 2, 2004, at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, following a long illness.
She was born Oct. 23, 1923, in Hagar Township, Berrien County, to Rudolph and Emma (Schepke) Neuman, and was named by her two older sisters after two of their school friends.
Ida's parents both emigrated on ships from Prussia to America. Rudolph took a route through Hamburg, Germany and Windsor, Ontario, into Michigan by way of Detroit. He was born in Volhynia, Prussia, now Russia, to Carl and Wilhemenia (Swartz) Neuman. Emma took a route through Philadelphia, Pa., with her cousin, then rode in a train to finish the journey to Berrien County. Emma was also born in Volhynia, Prussia, now Russia, to Gottlibe and Louise (Begalke) Schepke. Rudolph and Emma met and married in St. Joseph. They owned a small farm in Hagar Township, Mich., where Ida, along with her parents and siblings, spent a lot of time attending to the land, crops such as lima beans and concord grapes, and animals.
Working away from home started for Ida at the age of 17 at the K-Wood Corp. on Milton Road in Benton Harbor. She worked at a candy factory, at a defense plant during World War II and at a cigar manufacturing company. In the 1940s she also lived with her sister for a few years in Louisville, Ky.
After her return to the Benton Harbor area, she met Donald J. Gilson at the end of 1949 at a New Year's Eve party. Donald had been working at Continental Motors and living in Muskegon, for a few years, and had been in Benton Harbor visiting with his parents. The former Mrs. Ida Gladys (Neuman) Pritchett and Donald were married on Aug. 8, 1951, in Monticello, Ind. She also was a den mother for many years with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Mrs. Gilson was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, on Nov. 4, 2001; her parents, Rudolph Neuman, in 1955, and Emma Neuman, in 1990; half-brothers, Freddie Otto, in 1916, Herman Neuman, in 1985, and Conrad Neuman; brothers, Bill Neuman, in 1980 and Arthur Neuman, in 2003; and a half-sister, Alvinia (Otto) Adams, in 2002.
Survivors are sons -- Donald A. and Jerry; daughter, Kay; two grandsons, Chris and Donald P., all of Muskegon; a daughter, Judy of Florida from her first marriage; her half-sister, Martha "Mae" (Otto) Constintine of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and a brother, Robert Neuman of Benton Harbor.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Lee Funeral Home 2812 Fifth St., Muskegon Heights, with the Rev. David A. Selleck officiating. Interment will be in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Muskegon.
Edward T. Broderick Sr.
BENTON HARBOR -- Edward T. Broderick Sr., 84, of Benton Harbor died on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Benton Harbor with his family at his side.
Ed was born Sept. 2, 1919, to William and Mary (O'Brien) Broderick. He lived his entire life on the family Centennial farm in Hagar Township and was the third generation to farm the land. Edward graduated from St. John's High School, Class of 1937. He married the former Geraldine Heffron on Dec. 1, 1956, in Chicago.
Edward is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gerry, as well as his six children -- four sons, William, Ed Jr. (Danyl), John (Tonda) and Michael (Lisa) Broderick; two daughters, Mary (Ted) Weber and Susan (Michael) Herrmann. Edward also was blessed with seven granddaughters -- Kate and Liz Weber; Chelsea, Kelly, Megan and Amy Broderick; Julianna Herrmann; and one grandson, Edward T. Broderick III. Also surviving are two sisters, Margaret Cheevers and Mary (Dick) McClure.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Agnes Broderick, and a grandson, Ryan Broderick.
Ed was very involved in serving his community. He served as Hagar Township Supervisor from 1957-1984. He also served as a Berrien County Road Commissioner from 1986-1994. Ed was active in numerous civic and church organizations and he was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1120 and St. Joseph Elks No. 541.
Visitation will be at Starks and Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, where the family will greet friends on Tuesday, Jan. 6, from 3 to 8 p.m. A prayer service will held at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Catholic Church, 600 Columbus St., Benton Harbor, with Father Bill Jacobs officiating. Memorials may be made to Lake Michigan Catholic Schools.
Ed had a great love of his heritage, family and friends. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and outgoing personality.
