Leslie Donselar
Leslie Donselar, 85, lifelong resident of Grand Haven, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at a local hospital.
He was born Sept. 5, 1916, to Hio and Ethel (Barthel) Donselar in Grand Haven, and married Helyn G. Rosema June 2, 1950, in Grand Haven. She preceded him in death Dec. 13, 1998.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was the recipient of two purple hearts. He was a machinist for Gardner Denver and following retirement, drove cars for Gage Motors. Mr. Donselar was a member of Trinity Reformed Church where he had been a former deacon, a member of the American Legion -- Charles Conklin Post 28 and the Sgt. Alvin Jonker -- VFW Post 2326. He enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include his two daughters, Denise (William) Casemier and Dorothie (Stephen) Shelley, both of Grand Haven; two sons, Mark (Diane) Donselar, Grand Haven, Matthew (Lisa) Donselar, Grand Haven; 10 grandchildren: Ryan, Jeffery and Brett Casemier, Michael (Angela) Rose, Kelley Donselar, Miranda and Dale Donselar, Kayla Black, Rebecca and Erica Shelley; a great-grandson, Hunter Thomas Rose; four sisters: Evelyn VanderVeen and Lorraine (Cecil) Sly, both of Grand Haven, Helen Jean Martin, Florida, Patsy Stille, Grand Haven; two brothers, Aldine (Eilene) Donselar and Bill (Faye) Donselar, both of Grand Haven; also nieces and nephews. His brother Charlie preceded him in death.

A funeral service for Mr. Donselar will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Trinity Reformed Church in Grand Haven with Rev. John Koedyker officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Trinity Reformed Church Memorial Fund or VFW Post 2326.
Lois Sheffield
Mrs. Lois C. Sheffield, 85, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002.
She was born in Muskegon on Aug. 21, 1916 to Gustous and Sarah (Hallgreen) Bjornstrom. She married Donald Sheffield in South Bend, Ind. and was a member of First Congregational Church.
She is survived by her husband, Donald; a sister, Alyce (Arthur) Newhoff of Muskegon Heights; a brother, Albert (Rayora) Bjornstrom of Muskegon; two sisters-in-law, Fran Sheffield of Grand Haven and Frances Bjornstrom of Muskegon; many nieces; nephews and special friend, Joe Panici of Muskegon.
A service for Mrs. Sheffield will be held Monday, Jan. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Clock Chapel-Muskegon with Pastor Sigrid Rother officiating. Interment at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held Sunday, Jan. 27 from 1-4 p.m. at Clock Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First Congregational Church Memorial Fund.
Adrian Poel
Adrian C. Poel, 78, lifelong Grand Haven resident died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at a local adult foster care facility.
He was born Aug. 21, 1923 to Edward and Sena (Casemier) Poel in Grand Haven, and married Isla L. Stone Jan. 17, 1945 in Fruitport. She preceded him in death Aug. 26, 1983. He was married to Henrietta Deurwaarder from Nov. 23, 1984 until her death on Dec. 12, 1996.
Mr. Poel had been a celery farmer and had farms on Fulton Street and 160th Avenue in Grand Haven Township. He was a member and former elder and deacon of Second Christian Reformed Church; and former board member of Grand Haven Christian School. His favorite hobby was restoring Model T cars.
Surviving are his daughters Ruth Ann (Rev. John) Bolt of Grand Rapids and Judy (Dann) VerVelde of Oostburg, Wis.; sons Robert (Sheri) Poel of Linden and Roger (Dawn) Poel, Saugatuck; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister Caroline (Richard) Gronevelt) Spring Lake; a brother-in-law Alvin Kieft, Grand Haven and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sisters Cornelia Schuitema and Josephine Kieft, and by an infant brother, Albert C. Poel.

A funeral service for Mr. Poel will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Second Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Edward Tamminga and Rev. John Bolt officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Grand Haven Christian School.
Harold Welscott
Harold R. Welscott, 81, of Spring Lake died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002 at his home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1920 to James and Anna (Morley) Welscott in Holland; and married Pearl Hesse on June 24, 1941 in Muskegon.
Mr. Welscott was the former owner of Red's Service Station in Spring Lake and had been in charge of quality control for Cooper Industries. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a member of Christ Community Church where he had formerly served as a deacon and elder, and he had been formerly involved with various quality control organizations. His interests included hunting, fishing, camping, traveling and golfing.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Pearl; a daughter, Ruth Ann Welscott of Albuquerque, N.M.; two sons, Rev. Richard A. (Mary) Welscott of Grand Rapids and Roger L. (Mary Jo) Welscott of Spring Lake; five grandchildren: Mark (Amy Jo) Welscott, Gina, Todd and Doug Welscott, and Wendy Weesies; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three great-grandchildren, and by his brother, Raymond.

A funeral service for Mr. Welscott will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Community Church with Rev. Peter Theune officiating. Friends may meet the family 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at the church parlor. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Ottawa Community.
KRAMER, MRS. FRANCES
Spring Lake - Mrs. Frances Kramer, 87, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002. A service will be held for her Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 11 a.m. at the Clock Chapel-Muskegon. Interment at Spring Lake Cemetery. Ernest Meerman
Mr. Ernest Meerman, 88, of Coopersville died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002.
He was preceded in death by his grandson Jeff Hudd in 1996 and his wife Nellie Frances in 2000. He is survived by his children Nancy Steggerda of Holland, Faith (Carl) Kikstra of Allendale, Louise (Gary) Hudd of Grand Haven and Steve (Sue) Meerman of Coopersville; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Agnes Horling and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Mr. Meerman will be held Monday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at Coopersville Reformed Church with Rev. Robert Van Zyl officiating. Interment at Coopersville Cemetery. Versil Sweet
Versil Dean Sweet, 63, of Grand Haven, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 at North Ottawa Community Hospital.
He was born in East Jordan on Dec. 7, 1938 to Herbert and Belle (Murphy) Sweet and married the former Betty Mihalek in January 1962.
Mr. Sweet had been employed in the quality control department at Herman Miller, Inc. since 1985. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, woodworking and gardening.
Survivors include: his wife, Betty; son, Michael Sweet of Montverde, Fla.; daughter, Lisa (Peter Impara) Sweet of Olympia, Wash.; sister, Kathleen Peck of Boyne City; two brothers, Basil (Virginia) Sweet of Petoskey amd Stanley (Verna) Sweet of Gulliver; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Sweet was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lawrence Sweet and brother-in-law, Floyd Peck.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Grand Haven.
A Funeral Mass for Mr. Versil Dean Sweet will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, 2002 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Anthony Vainavicz officiating. Interment at Grand Haven Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday with a scripture service at 4:30 p.m. at Clock Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Mary's School Foundation for Catholic Education.
Donald Nelson
Donald D. Nelson, 61, of Grand Haven died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002 in Muskegon.
He was born Dec. 4, 1940 to Donald M. and Mae (Szott) Nelson in Chicago, Ill., and married Elaine Sanford May 21, 1966 in Shelby.
Mr. Nelson moved here 28 years ago from Grand Rapids and was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and F.O. Eagles - Aerie 925 of Grand Haven. He was an avid sailor and car collector.
Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Elaine; daughter Bethany (Howard) Rubin of San Diego, Calif.; son Scott Nelson of Chicago, Ill.; and two sisters, Nancy (Dave) Canavera of Summerville, S.C. and Carol (Mike) Morris of Traverse City.

A funeral mass for Mr. Nelson will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Shea officiating. Friends may meet the family 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Ottawa Shores Humane Society.
Frances Kopp
Frances Conant Kopp, 90, formerly of Grand Haven, died Jan. 23, 2002 in Benson, Ariz.
She was born in Grand Haven Jan. 28, 1911 to George and Nellie Conant. She married Carl Hovey in 1932 and following his death she married Joseph Kopp of Muskegon.
Mrs. Kopp has lived in Benson, Ariz. for the last 10 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Patricia (Ted) Horat, Benson, Ariz.; one son, Carl (Elaine) Hovey, Benson, Ariz.; five sisters, Thelma Rhodea, Eileen Conant, Wilma Kieft, Dorene (Basil) Corbett, Nancy (Dick) Fuller, one brother, George (Doris) Conant, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Gladys Kieft, Geraldine Holman, Georgia Jasany, and Doris Curtis and one brother, Gordon Conant.
A memorial service will be held in Benson, Ariz. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002.
