Judith Garlanger
BERRIEN CENTER -- Judith Garlanger, 58, of Berrien Center passed away Thursday, Feb. 26, 2004, at Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Burial of ashes will follow at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Memorials may be made to the Emergency Shelter Services Inc.
Judith was born on June 21, 1945, in Benton Harbor to Mitchell and Marguerite (Pallas) Astopenia.
She was a lifetime resident of this area.
Prior to her illness, she was employed as an administrative assistant for Emergency Shelter Services, Inc.
In addition to her work there, she also gave donations and did volunteer work on her own time. Her previous employment was with Gathright Services.
Mrs. Garlanger is survived by her daughters, DeAnn (Scharnowske) Lee and her husband, Scott, of St. Joseph and Jodie (Scharnowske) Harger and her husband, Paul, of Berrien Center; her mother, Marguerite Astopenia of Stevensville; sister, Carol Mahler of Stevensville; brothers, Michael (Beverly) Astopenia and William Astopenia, both of St. Joseph; and grandchildren, Ashlee Wilbur, Kaleb Lee, Joshua and Zachary Amudson and Jacob Harger.
Mrs. Garlanger was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Garlanger, in 1998 and her father in 1983.
Anna Mae Drake
BENTON HARBOR -- Anna Mae Drake, 77, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 2004, at St. Ann's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio.
She was a member of Eternal Life Church of God, where she served on the Mother's Board.
Survived by sons, Willie Drake and Johnny (Patricia) Drake, both of Benton Harbor, and Edward Drake; daughters -- Minerva Drake Lassie, Diane (Raymond) Walker and Cathryn (Charles) Craft, all of Columbus, Ohio, Dorothy Ferguson and Jeanette Byrd, both of Benton Harbor; 56 grandchildren; 108 great-grandchildren; 75 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at noon Friday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Benton Harbor. Interment will be in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor.

Susan E. (Steffens) Schultz
SOUTH HAVEN -- Susan E. (Steffens) Schultz, 59, of South Haven passed away Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2004, at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, after an illness of several months.
A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, March 6, at Filbrandt Family Funeral Home, South Haven. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Arts and Music Program of the Salvation Army, 233 Michigan St., Benton Harbor, Mich. 49022.
Susan was born Oct. 26, 1944, in Grand Rapids, to Roy and Margaret Steffens. She was raised in Grand Rapids and met her husband, Ken, while they were students at Michigan State University. After their marriage, they settled in his hometown of Benton Harbor. Susan began her career as an RN at Mercy Hospital in Benton Harbor and spent most of her years as a surgical nurse both there and at Memorial/Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. She took one year off to work as a nurse/instructor at the school-age mother program through the Benton Harbor school system in the early '70s. In the '90s, Susan returned to school to attain her B.S. in nursing. Most recently, she was the manager of Central Processing at Lakeland Hospitals in St. Joseph and Niles.
Susan will be greatly missed by her family and wide circle of friends. She will be most remembered for her sense of humor, distinctive personality, propensity for hyperbole and love of her family. Susan will also be remembered for her generosity towards her friends, which she acquired from all paths of life. She had many interests -- traveling and gardening were among her favorites. Susan was always known for her magnificent flower and vegetable gardens. She was also known for attracting and housing an array of pets of questionable character. To best sum up Susan -- if you had the good fortune to know her, you will never forget her.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Schultz of South Haven; son, Stephen, and cherished grandson, Skyler, of Coloma. She is also survived by a host of relatives in the Grand Rapids area, as well as several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law in Michigan and North Carolina.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Karen K. Church
COLOMA -- Karen K. Church, 37, of Coloma, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004, unexpectedly at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in Benton Harbor, where visitation will take place one hour prior.
Burial will be in Hickory Bluff Cemetery in Lincoln Township.
Memorial donations may be made to the family.
Karen was born Sept. 14, 1966, in Benton Harbor to William Church and Bonnie Mitchell. She had lived her entire life in this community. Karen will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include a son, Blake Holcomb of Coloma; a daughter, Kareen Holcomb of Coloma; her fianc/, Dale Bissell of Coloma; mother and stepfather, Bonnie and Richard Evans of Coloma; father, William (Dianne) Church of Spring, Texas; two brothers, Fredie Church of California and William Church of Coloma; a sister, Julie (Marc) Blevins of Coloma; two stepsisters, Jennifer (Edward) Ketchum of Bridgman and Heidi (Matthew) Plocher of St. Joseph; grandfather, Fred Mitchell of Baroda; and a host of aunts; uncles; nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends.
Karen was preceded in death by a grandmother, Elda Mitchell.
Janet C. Healey
NILES -- Janet C. Healey, 60, of Niles died Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at Bronson Methodist Hospital, Kalamazoo, from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at First Missionary Church, Niles, with the Rev. Daniel D. Miller officiating.
Burial will be in West Goshen Cemetery, Goshen, Ind. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Memorial contributions may be made to First Missionary Church or Juvenile Diabetes.
Mrs. Healey was born June 21, 1944, in Goshen to Ralph H. Struble and Helen L. Neter Struble. Janet was a member of First Missionary Church; member of Helpmates Support Group and Parents Without Partners. She loved pets and Notre Dame football.
On Aug. 12, 1967, in Goshen she married Thomas Edward Francis Healey. He preceded her in death on Sept. 30, 2001.
Survivors include: daughter, Angela Marie Healey of Garden City, S.C.; her mother, Helen Struble of Goshen; sisters -- Marilyn (Steven) Humbarger of Bristol, Ind., and Deborah (Gregory) Pollock of Goshen; nieces -- Leslie Pollock of Goshen, Jessica Humbarger of Los Angeles; nephews -- Brandon Pollock of Goshen and Adam Humbarger of Lafayette, Ind.; aunt, Christine Neter of Goshen.
Daniel Eldon Rodgers
BENTON HARBOR -- Daniel Eldon Rodgers, infant son of Sean and Lori Rodgers of Benton Harbor, went to meet Jesus on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with the Rev. Paul Mumaw officiating. Friends may call beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Bronson Hospital Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit or The March of Dimes.

Daniel was born Aug. 12, 2004, in Kalamazoo to Sean and Lori (Neidlinger) Rodgers. Although he was only on this earth for 16 days, he touched many, many hearts in just a short time.
In addition to his parents, Daniel is survived by his grandparents, Dennis and Barb Neidlinger of New Troy and Warren and Barb Rodgers of St. Joseph; his great-grandmother, Mary Liskey of San Antonio, Texas; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Frank D. Perry
BANGOR -- Frank D. Perry, 66, of Bangor passed away Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at Countryside Nursing Centre, South Haven.
The family will meet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Bangor Chapel, D.L. Miller Funeral Home (www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com), where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, with Pastor John Busch officiating. Interment will follow in Monks Cemetery, Geneva Township.
Frank was born Dec. 25, 1937, in Covington, Tenn., the son of Thomas and Offalee (Dodson) Perry. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 20 years, retiring in June 1981, as a Sergeant First Class. He had lived in the Bangor area for 20 years, where he enjoyed fishing, working in his garden, and being with people.
Surviving are five children -- Ginger and Pam, both of Tennessee, Matthew (Ginger) Perry of Bangor, Rebecca (Mario) Muniz of Grand Junction, Rosetta (Conrrado) Castillo of Bangor; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Charles, William, John and James, all of Tennessee; three sisters, Betty, Norma and Delia, all of Tennessee.
