Robert S. Kizer
ST. JOSEPH -- Robert S. Kizer, 89, of St. Joseph passed away Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Orchard Grove Extended Care Centre in Benton Harbor.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Joseph. Military rites and burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Visitation will be held Friday, Aug. 13, from 5 until 9 p.m. at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, in St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mr. Kizer was born on Jan. 28, 1915, in Springfield, Ill., to Charles and Iota Kizer. He moved to this area with his family in 1928. Bob was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He served in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, Iceland, and Northern Africa. Mr. Kizer retired in 1977 from Trinity Lutheran Church after 29 years of employment as the church and school custodian. He was also a member of the Retired for Fun Club.
Mr. Kizer is survived by his sons -- Thomas (Sherry) Kizer of Winter Garden, Fla., James Kizer of Cherry Valley, Ill., Scott (Janice) Kizer of Bridgman; daughters -- Trudy (Charles) Williams of Evanston, Ill., Kaylene (David) Stygar of Benton Harbor and Connie (Michael) Little of Camden, Del.; a brother, Paul (Nancy) Kizer of Ann Arbor; a sister, Marguerite Coble of Albuquerque, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Ester, in 1990; his daughter, Sandra; and his brother, Charles Kizer.
Chester L. Jollay
ROTONDA WEST, Fla. -- Chester L. Jollay, 84, of Rotonda West, Fla., passed away July 13, 2004.
Memorial services will be held at Peach Lutheran Church on Thursday, Aug. 26, at 2 p.m. Also, at 11 a.m. on Aug. 26 there will be military rites at Coloma Cemetery, Coloma-Riverside Road, by Coloma American Legion 362.
Carol E. Herrman
ST. JOSEPH -- Carol E. Herrman, 52, of St. Joseph, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Golden Place in St. Joseph, after a long, valiant battle with cancer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter's Church, 623 Church St., St. Joseph. with the Rev. Randy Doyle officiating. Cremation will follow the service with burial at North Shore Memory Gardens, Coloma.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 tonight at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph.

Carol was born May 25, 1952, to Lester E. and Virginia (Ross) Herrman, Sr. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1970, and from Central Michigan University in 1974.
Carol was employed at Family Foods in Benton Harbor from 1976 to 1988, and by Whirlpool in St. Joseph from 1988 until her health forced her retirement in 1997.
Carol was a member of St. Peter's Church in St. Joseph.
Carol is survived by her mother, Virginia Herrman of St. Joseph; her brother, Lester (Marilyn) Herrman Jr. of St. Joseph; her sister, Barbara (John) Alice of Richardson, Texas; five nephews -- Kyle E. Herrman, Benjamin (Nicole) Rimes, Jonathon Rimes, Michael (Danielle) Alice and David Alice; and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Herrman Sr., on March 8, 1984, and her sister-in-law, Cynthia Marutz Herrman, on July 14, 1994.
Delbert H. Doan
BENTON HARBOR -- Delbert H. Doan, 83, of Benton Harbor passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service on Friday, Aug. 13, at 10 a.m. at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with the Rev. Jim Gray officiating. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Friends may call tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Area Agency on Aging and American Lung Association. Delbert was born to Horace and Eutha (Sides) Doan on Dec. 21, 1920, in Pascola, Mo. Delbert worked as a painter for 48 years. He painted many building and houses in St. Joseph, including Lakeland Hospital, Lake Michigan College and Whirlpool Corp. He most recently was employed by Little Painting as foreman. Delbert was married to Dorothy Lampley in 1941; she preceded him in death in 1990. He married Caroline Collier in 1992, at Fairplain Assembly of God, where Delbert was a member. Delbert enjoyed fishing and hunting with his son, gardening, woodwork, puzzles and spending time with his family.
Delbert is survived by his wife, Caroline; children -- Nancy (Donald) Sherwood of St. Joseph, David (Becky) Doan of Benton Harbor and Linda (Manuel) Smith of Battle Creek; eight grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; stepchildren -- Randy, Mike and Jim Collier, all of St. Joseph; and Pam Olsen of Mesa, Ariz.; nine stepgrandchildren and siblings -- Ailenen Wilson, Lucille Hamlett, Alva Doan, Horace Doan Jr., all of Benton Harbor; and Alta Looney of Greenup, Ill.
Delbert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; daughter, Joann Waldenmaier; and brothers, Raymond and Carl Doan.
Mrs. Lovie Ree Bridgman
HINESVILLE, Ga. -- Mrs. Lovie Ree Bridgman, 65, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in Hinesville, Ga.
Survivors include three daughters (sons-in-law), Audrey (Ashley) Henderson of Atlanta, Ga., Antoinnette (Rodell) Jones of Richmond Hill, Ga., and Rosalind (Ronald) Rogers of Allenhurst, Ga.; two brothers; four sisters; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 13, at New Bethel Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, with visitation one hour prior from 10 till 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Crystal Springs Cemetery, Benton Harbor. Local arrangements entrusted to Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.
Deborah Dorsey Adler
ST. JOSEPH -- Deborah Dorsey Adler, 48, of St. Joseph, went to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter's Church, 623 Church St., St. Joseph, with the Rev. Randy Doyle officiating. Deborah was born Dec. 16, 1955, in Harrison, Ark., to Lee and Wanda (Ryan) Dorsey. On Nov. 27, 1976, she married Stephan Adler in St. Joseph. Deborah owned and operated Deb's Day Care in St. Joseph for the last 17 years. She was a member of St. Peter's Church, where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship, the St. Peter's Board, and a Sunday School Teacher. Deborah enjoyed gardening, camping, canoeing, animals, and traveling. Her favorite destination was Walt Disney World. She enjoyed sports and cheering for her children as they participated in their sporting activities. Deborah deeply loved her family.
Deborah is survived by her husband, Stephan Adler; two daughters, Erin Adler of Detroit, attending college, and Ellen Adler of St. Joseph, attending Western Michigan University; her son, Eric Adler at home; her parents, Lee and Wanda Dorsey of Stevensville; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edward and Edna Adler of St. Joseph; four sisters -- Linda Bookout of Las Vegas, Nev.; Karen Bert and Leta Dorsey, both of St. Joseph; Brenda (Rick) Waning of Stevensville; and many nieces and nephews.
Anthony W. Genovese
BENTON HARBOR -- Anthony W. Genovese, 88, of Benton Harbor passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, at St. John's Catholic Church in Benton Harbor with Father Bill Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow with military rites in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Dey-Florin Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, St. Joseph where prayers will be held at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 105 or SS John and Bernard Parish.
Mr. Genovese was born on Feb. 11, 1916, in Benton Harbor to Salvatore and Julia (Cappillo) Genovese. He was a life-long resident of Benton Harbor and worked as a self-employed farmer and fruit broker. He was a member of the American Legion Post 105 and the VFW Club Post 1137 both in Benton Harbor. He was also a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Benton Harbor.
Survivors include four nephews -- John Genovese (Norma Adkerson) of St. Joseph, Joseph Genovese Jr. of Benton Harbor, Peter Genovese of Jacksonville, Fla. and Edward Carlborn of Durand, Mich.; and several great-nephews; great-nieces; cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his brothers -- Frank, Joseph, Pete, Philip, and Sam; and his sisters, Lena and Mary.
Garfield Baskin
BENTON HARBOR -- Garfield Baskin, 82, of Benton Harbor, passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Orchard Grove Extended Care Centre in Benton Harbor.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First Assembly of God, 3084 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens, Coloma, with Military Rites conducted by Coloma American Legion Post 362, VFW Post 1137 of Benton Harbor, and VFW Post 6803 of Watervliet. Mr. Baskin was born Aug. 12, 1921, in Casa, Ark., to Marion and Ruth (Wallace) Baskin. On Oct. 14, 1939, he married the former Bessie Emerson in Hayti, Mo. He moved to Michigan to take a job with Benton Harbor Mallable. Garfield was employed there until their closing, when he took a position with Advance Products, from where he retired.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in Okinawa and the Philippines. Garfield was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a member of the First Assembly of God, where he taught Sunday School for many years, and often played the guitar and sang. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie, in 1991. On Aug. 5, 1993, he married the former Carrie Walker Broadwater in St. Joseph. Garfield loved to travel and spend time with his family.
Mr. Baskin is survived by his wife, Carrie; three sons -- Ronnie (Darcy) Baskin of Benton Harbor, Jerry (Sandy) Baskin of Sodus and Curtis (Cindy) Baskin of Sumnerville, Mich.; a daughter, Marcella (Craig) Rudell of Berrien Springs; three stepsons -- Bob (Joan) Broadwater of Arizona, Richard (Diane) Broadwater of Texas and John (Debbie) Broadwater of Dorr, Mich.; thirteen grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six step great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sarah Evelyn Zielke of Benton Harbor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Bessie; a son, Bruce Baskin in 1971; and a brother, Carl Stacey in 1991.
