Tom Grayling Lanning, Ed. D
BANGOR -- Tom Grayling Lanning, Ed. D, of Bangor, formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at home surrounded by family and friends. Born Nov. 27, 1952, in Grayling, Mich., he was the son of Barbara and Earl Lanning (deceased, 1988) and brother to Mary, Chris, Peter and Lisa.
Tom married Laurie Bridge and together they raised two wonderful daughters, Barbara Lanning and Christine Browski. They have one grandson, Skyler Baldwin, who was a great source of joy to Tom.
The tremendous love Tom had for his family and friends and their love for him, particularly the devotion shown by special friends John and Donna Vesey, brought strength and comfort during his long battle against brain cancer.
Tom is a graduate of Wayland High School (1971) and received his doctorate in counseling psychology from Western Michigan University in 1995.
Tom worked for the Kalamazoo County Juvenile Court for ten years. Dr. Lanning was a practicing psychologist in Kalamazoo for 15 years, and established Evaluation and Consultation Center in 1992. Tom's community involvement included the Van Buren Board of Mental Health, Boys and Girls Club, and his commitment to the treatment of domestic violence.
He was a multi-faceted man who could quickly grasp the most complicated of principles, yet loved the simplest of pleasures: fishing with his father-in-law, Ben, and brother-in-law, Ivan; camping with good friends on Lake Michigan; coaching his daughter's softball team; helping a friend build a pole barn.
Tom touched the lives of all who knew him with his quick wit, marvelous sense of humor and unflagging generosity. If there was a job to be done, you could always count on Tom to provide the muscle as well as the entertainment. There will always be stories to tell about Tom -- around a campfire, on a walk in the woods, over a cup of coffee, and in many thoughtful moments. We will be forever inspired by his example.
Visitation will be at the Bangor Chapel, D.L. Miller Funeral Home on Thursday, Aug. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 8 p.m.
The family suggests Memorial contributions be made to the Barbara Lanning Educational Fund (Fifth Third Bank, 101 W. Monroe St., Bangor, Mich. 49013) or the Henry Ford Hospital/Hermelin Brain Tumor Center (2799 W. Grand Blvd., Room 3094, Detroit, Mich. 48202, Attention: Mary Rexroad).
