Cheryl L. Wiersema
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Cheryl L. Wiersema, 59, of South Bend, Ind., died at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 29, 2004, at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend, of cancer.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. (Michigan time) on Saturday, July 3, at Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg. Cremation has taken place. Friends may call one hour prior to the memorial service at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Cheryl was born Jan. 13, 1945, to George H. Ross and Eileen O. Hamill Ross in Plainwell. She moved to South Bend in August of 1973 from Kalamazoo. Cheryl was the former owner of Every Bloomin' Thing, Edwardsburg (a florist and gift specialist).
She had attended Southwestern Michigan College of Dowagiac and St. Mary's of the Woods in Terre Haute. She was an LPN, having worked for Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo, and LakeView Hospital, Paw Paw, as well as Dr. Wayne Boyd's office in Decatur. She studied floral design, working for Avenue Floral, South Bend; Flower Cart of Niles and Martin's Floral Department at Northpoint, Elkhart, Ind., as well as owning her own florist shop.
As Cheryl L. Ross, she married Nicklos J. Wiersema, on Sept. 13, 1969, in Hartford. He survives along with a son, Matthew Wiersema of South Bend; daughter, Melissa Wiersema of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Melissa's friend, Tom Beverly of Ann Arbor, Mich.; brother, Robert (Kathy) Ross of Benton Harbor.
Frank H. Reynolds
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Frank H. Reynolds, 82, of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Dec. 12, 2003.
He was born June 10, 1921, in Kansas City, Mo., to Frank and Birdie (Gregory) Reynolds. Frank served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War as a Master Sergeant. He worked as a resident manager of an apartment complex in Colorado Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; by his sister, Maudie "Gerry" Lake; and a stepbrother, Austin Dibble, who died in 1993.
He is survived by three daughters -- Sue Koch, Pamela Reynolds, both of South Haven, and Kathleen Richards of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one son, Frank H. Reynolds Jr. of Lansing, Mich.; and one sister, Ella Mae Covey of South Haven and Englewood, Fla.
Graveside services will take place Friday, July 2, at 11 a.m. at Lakeview Cemetery with the Rev. Father John Young officiating. Military honors will be presented by the local VFW and American Legion veterans. The family is being helped by the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home, South Haven.
Evele Andrew White
BENTON HARBOR -- Evele Andrew White, 78, of Benton Harbor died at 4 a.m. Saturday, June 26, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph, of natural causes.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 3, at Progressive Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. James Childs officiating. Burial will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Mr. White was born Jan. 10, 1926, in Oran, Mo., and had lived in Benton Harbor since 1971, coming from Missouri. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Bronze Star. He was a factory laborer.
He was united in 1979 to Viola Daniels, who survives in Benton Harbor, and he helped to raise her nine children.
Also surviving are sons, Herman White of St. Louis, Mo.; stepsons, Clarence (Florine) Potts, Jesse (Ruthann) Daniels, Gussie (Brenda) Daniels, Jonnie (Glenda) Daniels, all of Benton Harbor, Carl (Twanna) Daniels of South Bend, Ind., Pervis Daniels of Benton Harbor; stepdaughters -- Eleanor (Louis) Coburn of Benton Harbor, Diane (Steve) Plunkett of Milwaukee, and Ora Daniels of Benton Harbor; sister, Marie Alexander of Grand Rapids; special grandson, Mike Daniels; 38 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; special cousin, Lillie Rose Parker of Benton Harbor; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Woodrow Kelsey and Elder James Thomas Kelsey.
Pauline A. Phillips
BENTON HARBOR -- Pauline A. Phillips, 85, of Benton Harbor passed away on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, at Fairplain Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Benton Harbor, where visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in North Shore Memory Gardens, Hagar Shores. Memorial donations may be made to Niles Avenue Baptist Church, St. Joseph, of which she attended.
Mrs. Phillips was born March 4, 1919, in Heber Springs, Ark., to Arter Bill and Augusta (Clements) Jinkins. She had lived in this community for 63 years. Mrs. Phillips' hobbies included jewelry making, painting, shopping and crocheting. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include a son, Bobbie Phillips of Sodus; daughter, Helena (Frank) Scoma of Berrien Springs; sister, Jessie Bean of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; five grandchildren -- Bobbie Phillips, Becky (Jim) Burnside, Fred (Tammy) Krolzick, Kiana (Billy) Gibbons and Deanna (Anthony) Boelcke; seven great-grandchildren -- Josie Phillips, Brittiney Phillips, Aaron Clark, Addison Gibbons, Caitlin Krolzick, Madison Krolzick and Jacob Boelcke; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lee Roy Phillips; brother, Aaron Jinkins; three sisters, Henrietta Love, Ermadine Harding and Waunita Jinkins; and by two infant twin sons.
Kimberly Ann (Borkowski) Reed
EAU CLAIRE -- Kimberly Ann (Borkowski) Reed, 39, of Eau Claire died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., as a result of injuries incurred in a plane crash.
A service of celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2, at Bowerman Funeral Home, Eau Claire, with burial following in Eau Claire Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 5 to 8 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Eau Claire Community Congregational Christian Church, where she was a member, or to the organization of the donor's choice.
Kimberly was born Dec. 12, 1964, in St. Joseph, to Nicholas and Jerilynn Borkowski. She graduated from Coloma High School. Further education and training was completed with her graduation from Lake Michigan College in their Culinary Arts program and certification in the American Culinary Federation. She was employed by HDS Services through Whirlpool Corporation as their Executive Chef.
She is survived by her husband, Kevin, whom she married on Sept. 23, 1989, in Eau Claire; two sons -- Hunter LeDair, 9, and Conner Nicholas, 6; her father, Nicholas Borkowski; stepmother, Leeanne Borkowski; two brothers -- Ben (Lisa) and Nicholas; two nephews. Joshua and Kody; one niece, Tara; her mother-in-law, Carole Reed; and her sister-in-law, Laurie Reed.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Jerilynn Barchett, in 2003.
Kimberly will be remembered for her pleasure in creative cooking, and her family and home in the country; but especially the love she had for the joy of her life -- her two boys, Hunter and Conner.
Alma R. Behlen
BENTON HARBOR -- Alma R. Behlen, 97, passed away Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at Lakeland Continuing Care Center in Berrien Center.
Alma was born on June 1, 1907, to Christian and Rosa Ruff in Cathay, N.D. She graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1924. She was employed for 24 years as a stenographer and cashier at the Enders Co. in Benton Harbor. Mrs. Behlen was a charter member of Napier Parkview Baptist Church, where she was active in the Sunday School Department. On June 24, 1930, she married Milton Behlen. He preceded her in death on Sept. 15, 1988.
A private memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial has taken place at Crystal Springs Cemetery. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Napier Parkview Baptist Church, Benton Harbor.
Mrs. Behlen is survived by her son, Jim (Sally) Behlen of Berrien Springs; a special sister-in-law, Genevieve Ruff of St. Joseph; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by three brothers -- Frank, Arthur, and Irving Ruff; and six sisters -- Helen Steinke, Ella Goltz, Rebecca Bluschke, Tina Bluschke, Florence Shawcroft and Marie Skibbe.
Mathias M. Gungler
COLOMA -- Mathias M. Gungler, 83, of Coloma died Aug. 27, 2004, at home following an illness.
A military graveside service remembering his life and honoring his service to the United States will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Battle Creek, Michigan. Mathias was born Aug. 29, 1920, in Melrose Park, Ill., to Nicholas and Katherine (Krutch) Gungler. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. His service to his country earned him several honorable decorations which his family treasures to this day.
Mathias worked for more than 19 years at Auto Specialties in St. Joseph before retiring in 1982, most recently as a foreman in the foundry. His hobbies included fishing and painting. Mathias taught himself to oil and acrylic paint following his retirement, and his family credits him with painting well over 1, 500 portraits.
On Dec. 17, 1949, he married Dorothy L. Miller, who survives.
Additional survivors include his four children -- Sandra (Bruce) Morgan of Watervliet, Susan Flaugh of Benton Harbor, Shirley Gungler of Benton Harbor and Betty Gungler of Coloma; five grandchildren -- Kristy Morgan, Justin Flaugh, Whitney Gungler, Melody Allen and Marcus Gungler; six great-grandchildren -- Tyler Pennington, Mason Pennington, Mariah, Jalen, Juwan Isom and Cameron Taylor; and a sister -- Susan Terry of Forsythe, Mo.
In addition to his parents, Mathias was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Karri Morgan, who died May 7, 1981; five brothers, Nicholas, Peter, Martin, Joseph and John; and three sisters, Margaret, Katherine and Rose.
