Frieda Bisnett
HARTFORD -- Frieda's life began June 20, 1918, in Watervliet. She spent her lifetime living in the area. She worked as a fruit farmer and she spent her spare time volunteering at the North Berrien Historical Society. In 1940, Frieda married Jon "Bud" Bisnett, together they raised a loving son.
Frieda's loving family includes: her son, (Weldon) Jon and his wife Susan Bisnett of Hartford; two grandsons -- Ryne James Bisnett and Bradley Donald Bisnett, both of Hartford; two sisters -- Ruth and her husband Melvin Danneffel of Watervliet and Lydia Modro of Lawrence.
Frieda died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Dowagiac Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jon; her parents, Andrew and Rose Paul; two sisters and two brothers.
Cremation has taken place and the family is planning private services to be held at a later date. Memorials may be made in Frieda's name to Hartford Boy Scouts. Hutchins Funeral Home, Watervliet, is assisting Frieda's family with arrangements.
Martha Ann Harfert
GALIEN -- Martha Ann Harfert, 75, of Galien died Sunday evening, Sept. 5, 2004, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at Pobocik Funeral Home, Three Oaks, with Pastor Carl Fitchett officiating. Interment will follow at Galien Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sawyer.
Mrs. Harfert was born Oct. 19, 1928, in Gastonia, N.C. On March 2, 1968, she married Robert A. Harfert in Buchanan. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1995. Mrs. Harfert lived most of her life in this area and was the former owner of the Riverside Grocery Store.
Frank L. Sink
BENTON HARBOR -- Frank L. Sink, 94, of Benton Harbor, went to meet his Lord and Savior Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at home.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. today, Sept. 8, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 Delaware, Benton Harbor, with Fr. William Jacobs officiating. Burial followed in Calvary Cemetery, Benton Harbor. Friends called from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, where the Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to SS. Frank was born Aug. 22, 1910, to Roy and Mary "Mayme" Sink in Sodus Township. He attended St. John's Catholic School in Benton Harbor. On Jan. 3, 1943, he married the former Grace McCarty in Chicago. Frank founded Thayer Paper Company in Benton Harbor, which he operated for over 30 years. Frank was a member of SS. John & Bernard Parish, The Knights of Columbus, Benton Harbor Lions Club, Benton Harbor Elks Club, served on the board of directors of the YMCA for many years, and was on the organizing board and a member of Twin Cities Alcoholics Anonymous for over 50 years.
Mr. Sink is survived by two nieces -- Dr. Patricia Ann (Dale) Quattrin and Marilou (Richard) Radke; two nephews -- John R. (Diane) Sink and Charles Buschert; his special godchild, Susan (Bill) Herring; and his special angels who cared for him the last two years of his life, Jean Herndon, Corinda Herndon and Dana (Scott) Humes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Grace, a brother and sister-in-law, John D. and Evelyn Sink; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathryn and Charles Buschert; and a nephew, Richard J. Sink.
Sandra Allen
BLOOMINGDALE -- Sandra Allen, 75, of Bloomingdale, formerly of Chicago, passed away Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Metron of Bloomingdale.
Mrs. Allen was born Nov. 21, 1928, in Maine, resided in Chicago many years and residing here the past 10 years.
Surviving are two daughters, twelve brothers and sisters, many nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will meet Friday 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D.L. Miller Funeral Home, then proceed to Grand Junction Cemetery for interment.
Charles James Meachum
HARTFORD -- Charles James Meachum, 76, of Hartford passed from his life on earth to eternity in heaven on Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at his home and in the presence of his family.
Charles was born on March 7, 1928, in Chicago, the son of the late Charles and Helen (Hedke) Meachum. Charles was also preceded in death by a sister, Marge Polland.
He retired from Clark Equipment Co. in 1986, after 30 years of employment. He was a life long farmer. Charles collected antique tools and was always seen at any sporting event for Hartford High School.
As to his wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10, at Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan, the Hartford Athletic Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Charles is survived by his wife, Arletta, whom he married on Jan. 7, 1950; their three children -- Charles "Bill" Meachum of Yale, Mich., Helen Louise Meachum and Robert Lloyd (Dorothy) Meachum, both of Hartford; grandson/son, Shawn Dale Meachum of St. Louis, Mo.; grandchildren -- Guy Meachum, Kelly Meachum, Chad Meachum, Corie Meachum and Kyle Meachum; and great-grandchildren -- Healy Meachum and Blair Barchett.
Henry Fred Krohne
DOWAGIAC -- Henry Fred Krohne, 88, of Dowagiac and well known Keeler Township fruit and vegetable grower, passed away from his life on earth to eternity in heaven on Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, at Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital, Dowagiac.
Henry was born on April 29, 1916, in Keeler Township, the son of John and Eva (Rupencamp) Krohne, both of whom preceded him in death. Henry was also preceded in death by a brother, Milford (Buss) Krohne.
As per his request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. A private inurnment of ashes will be held at a later date in Keeler Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
Henry married his wife of 65 years, Marie Lucille Rutz, on Dec. 31, 1938. She survives, along with their three children -- John (Karol) Krohne of Sister Lakes, Karen (Douglas) Slusher of Grants Pass, Ore., and Katherine Marie Krohne of Redondo Beach, Calif.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; his sister, Mildred Smith of Wilmington, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Stanley G. Vanderbeck Jr.
ST. JOSEPH -- Stanley G. Vanderbeck Jr., 86, of St. Joseph passed away Monday, Sept. 7, 2004, at his home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Church, 623 Church St., St. Joseph, with the Rev. Randy Doyle officiating. Friends may call from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Mr. Vanderbeck was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Benton Harbor, to Stanley G. and Louise (Wolverton) Vanderbeck Sr. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1936. Stanley earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was a Golden Glove Boxer. On Jan. 17, 1943, he married the former Viola Bittner in St. Joseph. Stanley served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Stanley operated Vandies Print Shop in his home for many, many years in addition to working at Remington Rand for 28 years. He retired from the St. Joseph Post Office in 1983 after 18 years of employment. Stanley was an avid golfer. He had three holes-in-one to his credit, one each at Blossom Trails, a course in Sarasota, Fla., and just last year, at 85 years of age, at Pebblewood Country Club. He was a member of St. Peter's Church, where he taught Sunday School, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Workers. Stanley loved tending to his lawn and his flowers. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Stanley is survived by his wife, Viola; his son, Dr. Ron (Laurie) Vanderbeck of Jenison, Mich.; two daughters -- Elaine (Lee) Gast Jr. of Sarasota, Susan Campbell of South Elgin, Ill.; five grandchildren -- Michael (Tracey) Gast, David (Dr. Lisa) Gast, Dr. Bob (Kristen) Brainard, Dr. Andy Brainard, Jonathan Vanderbeck; three great-grandchildren -- Katherine and Caroline Gast, Andy Gast; and his sister, Gloria Vanderbeck of Mission, Texas
Stanley was preceded in death by his mother, his father, and his stepmother, Mathilda Vanderbeck.
Beth Blanchard
STEVENSVILLE -- Beth Blanchard, 17, of Stevensville died Monday Sept. 6, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph. She was a beautiful and driven person high on life: funny, exceptional, a caring and giving loving daughter, and awesome outgoing sister.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, with prayers following at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Beth was born in Seoul, Korea, July 11, 1987. Her parents are Gregg and Kim (Hendren) Blanchard. She attended Lake Michigan Catholic School and was involved with The Student Council, The National Honor Society as a High Honor Student; Drama Club, Ski Club, Key Club, Band, Varsity Tennis Team and Girls Soccer.
She is survived by her parents, Kim and Gregg of Stevensville, a brother, Brock and Tracy Blanchard of Grandville, Mich.; a loving boyfriend, Dominic Morris; paternal grandparents, Ron and Joy Blanchard of St. Joseph; maternal grandmother, Shirley Hendren Sturgeon of Lady Lake, Fla.; cherished nieces -- Tammie and Durwood D'Agostino, Jim and Kathy Blanchard, Nancy (Blanchard) and Steven Moore, Mary (Blanchard) and John Price; many cousins -- Michael and Christine Blanchard, Bradley Blanchard, Jade, Gage and Tracey D'Agostino, Michael and Corey Ives, Michelle, Matthew and Marie Moore; as well as numerous second cousins and step-cousins.
She was preceded in death by her "Papa" Edward Hendren.
She took to the very best attributes of her friends and made them her own. Beth had an abundance of friends who loved her very much and she loved them. Her "Girly Laker Family" who knew her as "Tough Asian Chick" - now she will be their Asian Angel with an Attitude.
Beth is an organ donor, which allowed her to give life back to other people.
