William R. Krieger Jr.
ROGERS TWP. -- William R. Krieger Jr., 68, of Rogers Township, Mich., former area resident, died Sept. 6, 2004, at home.
Friends may visit at the Beck Funeral Home, Rogers City, Mich., from 2 to 8 p.m. today, where the Prayer Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume on Thursday at St. Michael Lutheran Church, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. Funeral with Pastor Mark Pflug officiating. Interment will be in St. Michael Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Sunrise Shore.
Mr. Krieger was born Aug. 23, 1936, in Berrien County. On Oct. 30, 1965, he married Jean Stein in Benton Harbor. Mr. Krieger was a Deputy Sheriff for Berrien County from 1967-1974, then he was an over the road trucker from 1974-1989. He and Jean moved to Rogers Township in April of 1982. Mr. Krieger was a member of St. Michael Lutheran Church in Belknap.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; three daughters -- Susann Gillaspia of Bangor, Janet Marie (Denver) Henslee of Lawrence, Joyce Lenore Mellema of Grand Rapids; son, Raymond Frederic (Kristina) Krieger of Rogers City; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Harry Albert Layman of Decatur; sister, Mary Ann (Wayne) Chrestman of Rock Island, Tenn.
Frank T. Paganini
GRAND RAPIDS -- Frank T. Paganini, 70, of Grand Rapids, died Monday, Sept. 6, 2004, in Grand Rapids.
Frank was born Jan. 12, 1934, in Battle Creek, the son of Robert and Mary (Orlando) Paganini. He grew up in Battle Creek, then lived in various cities before returning to Michigan, where he had lived in Grand Rapids for the last twelve years. He was a first lieutenant serving in the U.S. Army. Frank received a Master's degree in engineering from Michigan State University and also completed the General Electric Advanced Engineering Sequence. He served as manager, vice president and president of Research and Development for various companies including, General Electric, Kitchen-Aid, Whirlpool, Speed Queen, Frigidaire, Lundia and Grand Haven Stamping.
On Aug. 25, 1956, he married his high school sweetheart at St. Joseph Catholic Church, the former Violet Bliznakoff, who survives.
Also surviving are one son, Anthony T. (Lisa Lynn) Paganini of Gaines, Mich.; one daughter, Monica (Brian) Lindmark of Seattle; three grandchildren -- Michael and Alana Rose, Jackson Lindmark; two brothers -- Joseph Sofia of Battle Creek, Charles Paganini of Battle Creek; several nieces and nephews.
Frank enjoyed swimming, watching sports, serving as the Captain of the Battle Creek Central High School and 1956 MSU swim teams. He was a lifeguard at Goguac Lake and also swam the lake.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Battle Creek, with Fr. John Fleckenstein officiating. Family will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, Battle Creek, on Friday after 3 p.m., with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers. memorials may be directed to the West Michigan Alzheimer's Association of Holland.
Phyllis Elaine Abate
BENTON HARBOR -- Phyllis Elaine Abate, 79, of Bryan, Ohio passed away Friday morning Sept. 24, 2004, in Harborside Healthcare Center of Northwest Ohio-Bryan. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Ladies Shrine of Northwest Ohio, the Outreach program in Bryan, was a dispatcher with the General Telephone Company and a World War II Navy veteran.
She was born in Benton Harbor on March 24, 1925, the daughter of Lester and Thelma (Disbrow) Potts. On Dec. 29, 1945, she married Carl Abate and he preceded her in death on Jan. 23, 1990.
Mrs. Abate is survived by two sons, Michael and Gregory Abate of Bryan; two daughters, Susan (Frank) Psurny of Leesburg, Fla., and Catherine Abate of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a sister, Beverly Crary of La Sal, Utah, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Phyllis E. Abate will be on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Rob Marrow and the Rev. Edward Auchard officiating. Burial will follow at Fountain Grove Cemetery, Bryan. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Burr Funeral Home and Crematory. Memorial contributions may be made to Outreach, Shriners Hospital or First Presbyterian Church.
Susan K. 'Suzie Q' Enders
BENTON HARBOR -- Susan K. "Suzie Q" Enders, 54, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Sept. 23, 2004, at the University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor, Michigan.
A celebration of Life Service will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Kerley-Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Mumaw officiating. There will be a balloon release ceremony. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice at Home-Lory's Place. Susan was born in Benton Harbor, on Feb. 5, 1950, to Leo and Adeline (Waters) Felter. She was office manager for nine years at Plastic & Hand Surgery Associates.
Susan will be greatly missed by both her co-workers and the patients whose lives she touched. She was a truly loyal friend and a blessing to many.
Susan is survived by her daughter, Kristen (Kevin) Schulz of St. Joseph, and her son, John Adam Enders III of Adrian, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Tom Felter.
Raymond Theron Floate
HARTFORD -- Raymond Theron Floate, 89, of Hartford, passed from his life on earth to eternity in heaven on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2004, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.
Raymond was born on Dec. 21, 1914, in Hartford, the son of William and Leila (Shafer) Floate, both of whom precede him in death. Raymond also was preceded in death by a sister, Freda Kime, and a brother, Walter Floate.
Raymond married his wife of 63 years, Isabelle on July 11, 1941, and she survives along with a son, William (Carole) Floate of Lake Bluff, Ill.; a daughter, Paula (Zach) Holmes of Plymouth; a grandson, Zach G. Holmes of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a granddaughter, Christine Holmes of Richmond, Va.
Raymond was an agricultural teacher in both the Allegan Public Schools and the Kaleva Public Schools and was the assistant Allegan County agent for the MSU extension services. Raymond retired from Michigan Fruit Canners in 1980 after 34 years of employment.
The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford. A service to honor his memory will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at the Hartford United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Ronald Hansen will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hartford Public Library or Hartford United Methodist Church.
Aaron Daniel Obstfeld
BERRIEN SPRINGS -- Aaron Daniel Obstfeld, 30, went to meet the Lord on Sept. 22, 2004.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan. Friends may call from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the funeral services. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
Aaron was born Oct. 26, 1973, in Niles. He was a lifetime area resident of Berrien Springs. He was a calibration technician for Industrial Manufacturing. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Persian Gulf War. He was a devoted father and will be greatly missed by both family and friends.
Survivors include his father, Daniel Obstfeld of Niles; sons, Cayleb Obstfeld and Deven Obstfeld, both of Saugatuck, Mich.; sister, Sarah Obstfeld of St. Joseph; maternal grandparents, Joseph and Grace Slater of Berrien Springs; aunts -- Lynn Bammann, Merte Collins, Marlene Riley, Ruth Slater, Bea Warren and Cathie Tanner; uncle, Murray Obstfeld, and several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Rebecca Slater; brother, Nathan Camp, and grandparents, Morton Obstfeld and Neva Preston.
Clinton Pierce
BENTON HARBOR -- Clinton Pierce, 50, of Benton Harbor, died Sept. 17, 2004, at Lakeland Hospital, St. Joseph.
Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at the New Bethel Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Milton McAfee officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the church. Cremation will follow funeral services.
Mr. Pierce was born Nov. 13, 1953, in Ridgley, Tenn., to the union of Florence (Cories) Cooper and Robert Pierce. He married Hattie Pierce on March 2, 1986, in St. Joseph.
Surviving are sons -- L.T. Pierce of Germany, Guy Page and Earl Austin, both of Benton Harbor; daughters -- Karen Pierce of Benton Harbor, Levita (Roger) Brookings of Dowagiac, Glenda (Johny) Daniels of Benton Harbor and Tanisha Smith of Louisiana; brother, Robert Pierce Jr. of California; stepbrothers, Steven Cooper of Michigan City, Ind., and Larry Cooper of Malene, Mo.; sisters -- Lillie Ferguson, Betty Phillips, Brenda Pierce, Joanne Pierce and Donna (Calvin) Powell, all of Benton Harbor; stepsisters -- Maryanne Cooper and Charlene Cooper, both of Malene, Mo., Jenny Lynn Cooper of Michigan City, Ind., and Keisha Cooper of Benton Harbor, and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Pierce, and brother, James Williams.
Deo A. Rhoades
GRAND JUNCTION -- Deo A. Rhoades, 82, of Grand Junction passed away Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at the VA Medical Facility, Battle Creek.
The family will meet friends from 12 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Breedsville United Methodist Church, where the service will be held at 2 p.m. with Pastor O'Ryan Rickard officiating. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta. Arrangements by Bangor Chapel, D.L. Miller Funeral Home.
Deo was born Aug. 20, 1922, in Kalamazoo to Clarance and Nellie (Roe) Rhoades and had lived in the Grand Junction area since 1951. He was a disabled veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, a life member of Bailey Lodge 287 F&AM;, Breedsville, a life member of South Haven Rod and Gun Club, a very active member of the Black River Lions Club and a member of Breedsville United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a son, Johnny (Sylvia) Rhoades of Grand Junction; a daughter, Linda Lemon Steiner of Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Kelley of Las Vegas, Nev., and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, in 1999, whom he married Jan 20, 1946; three brothers and a sister.
