GEORGE EUGENE FRILEY

George Eugene Friley, 86, of Bridgman, formerly of Green Valley, Arizona, passed from this life into the loving arms of Jesus on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman.
George was born May 18, 1927 in Bruceville, Indiana the son of the late Harry Chester and Clara Belle (Wright) Friley. George married Helen LaVaughn Hiatt, the love of his life, on February 7, 1947 and shared their lives until her death on December 18, 1988. He was an Army Veteran of 22 years in counter intelligence, serving in Korea, Germany and Vietnam. George retired as Vice President and CEO from Indiana Steel and Engineering Corp. in Bedford, Indiana.
Survivors include his children - Deborah (David) Londot Sr., Karen (Trent Ripley) Friley; grandchildren - David (Julie) Londot, Jr., Ryan (Caroline) Londot, Mark (Amy) Londot, Elizabeth (Shawn Petru) Londot, Ashleigh (Andy) Crowe, Aubrei (Dan) Teter, Zacharia Friley; and ten great-grandchildren, with two more due. George was preceded in death by his wife LaVaughn, his son Michael and 12 brothers and sisters. George had a deep love for his family and country.
James Thomas Carney

James Thomas Carney, 86, of Bridgman, MI, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MI.
Funeral services for James and Doris his wife who preceded him in death June 6, will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Bridgman where they will be buried alongside their son Michael who died in 1982. Visitation will be from 3 - 6 PM Thursday at the funeral home. James was born October 18, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, the son of the late James T. and Catherine M. (Lambe) Carney, Sr. James served in the United States Air Force before he married Doris Marie Harris on August 25, 1956. They shared 56 years together. Jim, “Carney” to many of his friends, was an avid reader, writer, and talker. He volunteered at Jordan’s Life Care Center reading to the residents. In 1976 he published his book “Berrien Bicentennial”.
Survivors include his brother Lawrence and many nieces and nephews.
Doris Marie Carney

Doris Marie Carney, 91, of Bridgman, MI, passed way on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Friday, June 14, 2013 at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery, Bridgman. Doris was born August 15, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of the late Theodore and Lillian M. (Pagel) Harris. Doris married James T. Carney on August 25, 1956, and they shared 56 years together. She had attended Lake Michigan College and was an active member of the Bridgman Book Club and Womens Club. Before marriage Doris worked for the Wayne County Drain Commissioner’s Office in Detroit.
Survivors include her husband, Jim; and sisters Bernice Aikman and Marjorie (Joseph) Wolber and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded by a son, Michael J. Carney in 1982 and a brother-in-law - Eugene.
Raymond Lester Spears, Jr.
Raymond Lester Spears, Jr., 85, of Buchanan went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 31, 2013 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 5791 Sawyer Rd., Sawyer with Reverend Randy D. Lett officiating. Burial will be in Weesaw Township Cemetery, Buchanan. Friends may meet with the family from 2 - 5 PM on Sunday at Pike Funeral Home, Boyd Chapel, 9191 Red Arrow Highway, Bridgman. Raymond was born January 10, 1928 in Michigan City, Indiana, the son of the late Raymond Lester Sr. and Marie Helen (Busick) Spears. On November 22, 1947 he married Leora Hischke and they shared 58 years together until her death in 2006. Raymond began working for the New York Central Railroad and then worked at Clark Equipment Company for 26 years, and retired from Bendix Allied Signal. Raymond enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts and seeing 5 of his grandsons become Eagle Scouts. Ray was a Merchant Marine serving from 1945-46.He loved to bowl, and also enjoyed the outdoors while camping and fishing.
Raymond is survived by daughters – Diane (Terry) Federspiel of Fort Wayne, and Susan Spears of Sawyer; grandchildren – Samuel (Nancy) Federspiel, Benjamin (Annie) Federspiel, Martin Spears and Matthew Spears; great grandchildren – Serenity and McKayla Spears, Faith, George, Claire, and Elizabeth Federspiel; brother-in-law: Irving (Mary Lou) Hischke; Uncle - Jake (Shirley) Busick and Aunt Emilie Clem.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife Leora in 2006, a grandson - Michael in 2007, and his daughter Deborah in 2011.
Jessie Johnson
BENTON HARBOR - Jessie Johnson departed this life on Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Rose Arbor Hospice Residence, Kalamazoo. He was born Sept. 4, 1959, in Berrien Springs to Jessie and Maggie Johnson. He attended Benton Harbor Area Schools and later moved to Chicago, where he resided until he relocated to Kalamazoo in 2002.
Jessie recently accepted Christ as his personal Savior in the presence of family members. His work history was primarily in the city of Chicago as a laborer. Jessie was a loving, caring, and loyal man who never failed to say "I love you" to family members.
A celebration of life will be held for him on Saturday, April 11, at the New Paradise Baptist Church, Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Maurice McAfee officiating. The visitation is 10 a.m. and funeral is at 11 a.m. The funeral is being serviced by the Family Funeral Home of Benton Harbor. Jessie loved life and people. He had many friends and family members too numerous to mention. His favorite occasions were family dinners. He freely admitted that he had made some mistakes in life, although he had faith that God would forgive and save him.
Jessie will always be remembered for his smile and humor. He rarely complained about his condition and was quick to say "thank you for praying and visiting with him." He will be missed by his family and special friends.
Jessie is survived by five sisters, Bertha (Otis) King and Lillian Carson of Benton Harbor, Rosie (Stanley) Rice and Sandra Ford of Kalamazoo, Eliza D. Keyes of Hinesville, Ga.; three brothers, Willie L. (Virginia) Carson of Kalamazoo, Walter Campbell of Battle Creek, and James Johnson of Milwaukee; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended relatives and friends; and special friend, Annette Snells.
In addition to his parents, Jessie and Maggie Johnson, Jessie was preceded in death by one sister, Dorothy Carson-Anderson, and five brothers, Willie C. Carson, Bennie Hairs, Nathanial Carson, Gary D. Johnson, and an infant brother.
Donquella (Reid) Singh
BENTON HARBOR - Donquella (Reid) Singh, 39, of Benton Harbor passed away Friday, April 3, 2009, surrounded by her loving family after losing her battle with a rare form of Parkinson's at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held on Saturday, April 11, at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church with the Rev. George Robinson of St. Paul Baptist Church officiating. Friends are invited to visit one hour prior to the service from 4 to 5 p.m. The funeral service will start at 5 p.m. A burial service will take place on Monday at Crystal Springs Cemetery.
Donquella Torrenloynya was born on March 22, 1970, to her parents, Jamesanna "Jamie" and Sylvester Farmer and her father, Glenn Yarbrough. Her mother Jamesanna, aunts, Patricia and Hermine; uncle, Raymond and grandfather, James Reid all preceded her in death.
"Donnie" as she was affectionately called was a proud member of the BHHS Class of 1988 and before she became ill was employed at Atlantic Automotive.
She will be sadly missed by her loving aunt and caregiver, Karen Reid; three beautiful children, Jessica Piggee, LCpl.George Piggee III, and Jonecia Parson; one granddaughter, DaMiyah Lee; her fathers, Sylvester Farmer and Glenn Yarbrough; four sisters, Carmen (Carlos) Colquiett, Erica Farmer, Velecia Farmer, and Jamie "Jenna" Farmer; aunts, Kitty (Welton) Jackson, Crystal Reid, Rita (Greg) Glass; grandparents, Jimmie and Rosie Hicks, great-aunts and uncle, Emma Hull, Mary Williams, and David Coffey; god-parents Lucille and Richard Sanders; several special cousins, nieces, nephews, classmates, and friends.

Darlene Heyns
COLOMA - Darlene Heyns, 67, of Coloma passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at Borgess Hospital in Kalamazoo after a brief illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Visitation with the family will take place prior to the service from 2 to 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Darlene's memory may be made to the donor's choice. Darlene was born on April 21, 1941, in Dyess, Ark., to Heskel and Gladys (Flanna) Ashley and was raised in Parma, Missouri. She married her husband of 31 years, Larry Heyns, on Oct. 1, 1977. Darlene was employed as a cook at the Coloma Public Schools for thirteen years and she enjoyed being with the students. Her hobby was cooking, and she also loved to study the Bible as well as books about nutrition and health.
Mrs. Heyns is survived by her husband, Larry; her son, Kevin Fast of Kansas City, Mo., and stepson, Loren Heyns of Atlanta; brothers, Johnnie F. Ashley of Watervliet and Donald Ashley of Caraway, Ark.; sister, Patty (Kit) Main of Wilson, Ark.; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and her long time friend, Roberta Coholla of Warsaw, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Jullia "Judy" Latham, and three brothers, Heskel "E.B." Ashley, Jimmy Joe Ashley and James "Peanut" Ashley.
Constance E. Shane
WATERVLIET - Constance E. Shane passed away April 8, 2009, at The Willows in St. Joseph, three weeks following the death of her husband George W. Shane. They were married for 63 years.
Connie's life began July 5, 1923 in Waterville, Maine as an only child. Her father, Winthrop Stanley, was a physics professor at Colby College; her mother Maud Ella Stanley was a homemaker and former school teacher. Connie retained a distinctive Maine accent for her whole life and was very fond of the Maine seacoast where she spent her summers. Connie Shane graduated from Colby College and taught high school in upstate New York.
Connie met George Shane from Watervliet, Michigan during his Army Air Corps cadet training in Waterville, Maine at a college dance. They married in Watervliet on July 7, 1945.
After the war ended they came to Michigan where George built a farm supply and consulting business. Connie was a homemaker and cared for their seven children. She was also a part-time teacher for Berrien County Schools. Connie volunteered for the Watervliet Community Hospital and served as an active member of the Watervliet Plymouth Congregational Church.
Connie was a gifted artist with pastel and charcoal. She had a great love of literature, language, and poetry that she shared with her children. In addition, Connie was always interested in meeting and talking with people. Connie and George enjoyed dancing, watching birds on their farm, and traveling to visit their children.
Connie's family includes two sons, Bill (Gretchen Anderson) Shane of Niles and Michael (Amy) Shane of Littleton, Colo.; five daughters, Elaine (Jim) Flore of Williamston, Mich., Audrey (Tom) DeVault of Kalamazoo, Loretta Shane of Alachua, Fla., Virginia Shane of Gainesville, Fla., and Diane (Jeffrey) Schuldt of Sherrill, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; a first cousin, Audrey MacIntyre Hudson of Waterville, Maine; brothers and sisters-in law, Judy and Don Engle of Carmel, Indiana, Robert and LouAnn Shane of Berrien Springs, Joann Shane of Benton Harbor and Mary Dorr of Lawrence.
Friends may visit with Connie's family Friday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet. Funeral services celebrating her life will be Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in Watervliet with Pastor David Helms offiiciating. Burial will follow in Watervliet Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Connie's memory to Sarett Nature Center or Plymouth Congregational Church.
