Frank Jasica
ST. JOSEPH - Frank Jasica, 90, of St. Joseph, died Friday, April 3, 2009, at the Caretel Inns of Royalton in Royalton Township.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service in St. Joseph. The family will receive friends and relatives beginning at 10 a.m. on Wednesday at the Dey-Florin Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. (Michigan time) on Wednesday at the Beverly Cemetery in Blue Island, Ill. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.
Frank was born on Nov. 23, 1918, in Chicago, Ill., to Valentine and Agatha Jasica. Both his first wife, Jane, and his second wife, Sophie, preceded in him in death. Frank was employed at the Sherman-Williams Paint Plant in Chicago for over 30 years. He attended the Kingdom Hall of the St. Joseph Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. He enjoyed bowling and loved to travel. Frank was known for his sense of humor and his pleasant disposition.
He is survived by his brother, Ted (Ilva) Jasica of St. Joseph and several nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph and Kazmer; and three sisters, Estelle, Ann and Mary.
Kenneth Roland Barrett
HARTFORD - Kenneth Roland Barrett, 82, of Hartford, passed away Friday, April 3, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.
Kenneth was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Ironwood, the son of Michael and Ida (Joliceur) Barrett, both of whom precede him in passing. Kenneth was also preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Kenneth worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Flint as a Mail Carrier and as an Ambulance Driver for Groves and Company, which was also located in Flint. Kenneth will be truly missed by all his friends at the Woodside Apartments, where he had lived for the past 20 years.
Kenneth is survived by a brother, Basil (Ann) Barrett of Burton, and by numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
As per Kenneth's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial to honor Kenneth's memory and afterwards, a time of remembrance will commence at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 7, at the Woodside Apartments Community Center. Father Fabio Garzon of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hartford, will be the Celebrant. Memorials in Kenneth's name may be made to Boys Town. The family has entrusted the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with arrangements.
Allan Murray Coburn
SODUS - Allan Murray Coburn, 75, of Sodus, began his life in Hartford. He wanted to go home to be with his Lord and Savior, and entered his new home March 31, 2009, free from all sickness.
Allan worked at the Benton Harbor Post Office and proudly served his country in the Air Force. Allan cared very much for his family. He loved his church, the Yore Avenue Baptist Church. He loved going to the mall and McDonald's to have coffee and socialize with his buddies. Allan enjoyed going with his family to the restaurants and for rides in the car. He liked to visit the antique malls and liked to quote old proverbs.
Allan will be remembered as a very caring and generous person with a wonderful sense of humor and as a man of peace.
He will be very much missed by his family, including his wife, Judy of 47 years; sons, Arthur Coburn and Lance Allan Coburn; and nieces and nephews.
Allan is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Woodman and Faye (Shafer) Coburn; a sister, Dorothy Yerington; and five brothers - John Coburn, Frant Coburn, baby Harold Francis Coburn, Jack Coburn and Rex Coburn.
There will be no funeral services celebrating his life. Allan has been buried in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford. Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet assisted Allan's family with arrangements.
Dorothy L. Ames
DOWAGIAC - Dorothy L. Ames, 92, of Dowagiac, passed away at her home on April 2, 2009.
Dorothy's life began on March 9, 1917, in Dowagiac, the daughter of Leslie and Laura (Evans) Fletcher. She is a 1937 graduate of Dowagiac Central High School and attended Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University where she met her future husband, John "Jack" Ames. Jack and Dorothy were united in marriage on June 27, 1941, in South Bend. Dorothy worked as a librarian at the Dowagiac Public Library. She had been involved in the DAR and attended the Dowagiac Kingdom Hall. She enjoyed sewing clothing, especially for the children and grandchildren, baking and reading.
Her greatest joy was her family, which includes: her husband of 67 years, John "Jack" Ames of Dowagiac; children - Bonnie (Brian) Cooper of Bolivar, N.Y., Mark (Carol) Ames of Grand Haven, Mich., Jody Ames of Lansing, Mich., and Patricia (Gerald) Hoffman of Spring Hill, Fla.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Fern Fields of Jeanette, Pa., and Marjorie (Howard) Trumbull of Kalamazoo; and sister-in-law, Madelyn Fletcher of Dowagiac.
She is preceded in death by sister, Carol Nickert, and brother, Marion Fletcher.
Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 7, from 6 to 8 p.m., at McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home, where her service will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Dowagiac Library or the Cass County Council on Aging.
Ronald D. Jennings
BENTON HARBOR - Ronald D. Jennings, 68, of Benton Harbor, passed away after a lengthy illness on Friday, April 3, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 7, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 Delaware, Benton Harbor, with Fr. Bill Jacobs officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to the start of service at the church. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family requests any memorials or donations be made to Hospice at Home or SS. John-St. Bernard Parish. Ronald was born on Nov. 14, 1940, in St. Joseph, to Faye and Delores (Mcpherson) Jennings. He served his country in the U.S. Navy in Defense Communications and was highly decorated after 22 years of faithful service. Ronald married Marilyn (Mathews) Jennings on Sept. 12, 1964, in Watervliet. Together they raised two children, Kevin and Kelly. Ronald was the Exalted Ruler of the St. Joseph Elks 541 and a member of VFW Post 1137 in Benton Harbor. He also served as President of Knights of Columbus. Ronald was a long-time member of SS. John-St. Bernard Catholic Parish, working as a volunteer. He enjoyed golfing, tennis, bowling and tandem bicycling with his wife. Most of all, Ronald loved spending time with his grandkids.
Ronald is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marilyn; his mother, Delores; his son, Kevin (Jill) Jennings of Naperville, Ill.; his daughter, Kelly (Chuck) Snyder of Emmitsburg, Md.; adopted daughter, Kathy Rodi; previous daughter-in-law, Cheryl Jennings; his grandchildren - Rachel, Brandon S., Payton, Connor and Brandon T.; his brothers, Ted (Donna) Jennings of N.C. and Brad (Rosemary) Muller of Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Faye in December of 1950.
Phillip Cicero
BENTON HARBOR - Phillip Cicero, 90, of Bradenton, Fla., formerly of Benton Harbor, died Monday, March 30, 2009, in the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.
A Mass celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. The family will receive friends and relatives at the Dey-Florin Chapel of Florin Funeral Service from noon to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Phil was born on Jan. 1, 1919, in Chicago, Ill., to Joseph and Sophia Cicero. At the age of 4, his family moved to Italy, and he lived there for the next 10 years. He was veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Phil married Marguerite Palma, and she preceded him in death on March 18, 1997. Together they celebrated 55 years of marriage. He and his wife owned Scientific Glass Blowing Co. in St. Joseph for many years. Phil was a sports fan and liked to play golf in his younger years. He also loved to share wine with his friends.
He is survived by his daughter, Phyllis Webster of Roberts, Mont.; and his six grandchildren - John, Jeff and Chad Kruggel of Florida and Darren, Mike and Missy Millard of Michigan.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Pat Kruggel in 1986.
Nadia Hopkalo
BENTON HARBOR - Nadia Hopkalo, 85, of Benton Harbor, passed away Thursday morning, April 2, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 6, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, 1053 E. Napier Ave., in Benton Harbor, with Fr. Andrij Pokotylo officiating. Burial will follow in Watervliet Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Goshen, Ind.
Nadia was born March 18, 1924, in Ukraine. She and her husband, Nicholas, immigrated to the United States in 1950. They had lived in the area since 1960. Nadia worked for many years as a quality inspector for the Oscar Mayer Company. She enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and doing needlepoint. Nadia was an excellent cook and was particularly known for her European cuisine. Most of all, Nadia cherished her family and was particularly close to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Nadia is survived by her son, Wasyl "Bill" (Oksana) Hopkalo of Benton Harbor; granddaughters, Andrea (Daniel) Irvin of Livonia, Mich., Tanya (Anthony) Coraci of Macomb Township, Mich., and Christina Dikareva of Chicago, Ill.; and by her great-grandsons, Dominic Coraci and Brayden Irvin.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas, in 2000.
Janet Linburg
HUDSONVILLE - Janet Linburg, 50, of Hudsonville, Mich., passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 31, 2009.
She is survived by her husband, William Linburg; her children, Jenica Linburg and William Linburg Jr.; her stepchildren, Megan Linburg and Joshua Linburg; her father, George Daday Sr., and her stepmother, Norma Daday; her brothers and sisters - Bob Daday, Arlene Dull, Kathy and Jerry Sisk, Debb and Jeff Bush, George Daday Jr., Jean McDonald and Georgia Bonebright; her mother-in-law, Anne Linburg; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, R.J. Linburg, Barb and Greg Love; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the VanderLaan Funeral Home, with Pastor Stanley Drenth officiating. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
