Robert Lee Carter
SOUTH BEND - Robert Lee Carter, 61, of South Bend, Ind., passed away April 6, 2009, in South Bend at St. Joseph's Hospital. He was born March 5, 1948, in Birmingham, Ala., to the union Willie and Lula Mae McCurtis Carter. He was self-employed as a painter.
He leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Steven Carter and Keith Carter, two daughters, Brenda Lane and Renee Lane, two brothers, Willie Carter and Jessie McCurtis, four sisters, Catherine Marshall, Julie Ann Carter, Mary Pinkney and Linda Woodard, and a host of family and friends.
Services will be Friday, April 17, at the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, visitation at 11 a.m. and service at 12 p.m. Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Marian Louise Tyler
LAWRENCE - Marian Louise Tyler, 83 of Lawrence passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Lakeland Speciality Hospital, Berrien Center.
Marian was born Oct. 1, 1925, in Jamestown, N.D., the daughter of William and Margaret (Wiles) Krueger, both of whom preceded her in passing. She was also preceded by her husband, William Tyler on April 30, 1989; six sisters, Maxine Alsup, Anna Goodrich, Lucille Wright, Carolyn Sanborn, Dorothy Stickney and Arlene Krueger; and two brothers, Allen and Merton Krueger.
Marian retired from DuWel in Bangor in 1988 after 20 years of loyal service.
Marian is survived by three children, Dale Tyler of Lawrence, Jane Anthony of Tenn., and Ronald Tyler of Dowagiac. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Mark, Tammy, Morgan and Lindsay; four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Alex, Connor and Ethan; and a brother, Arnold Krueger of Paw Paw.
As per Marian's wishes, cremation has taken place and private family services will be conducted at a later date. The family has entrusted the Leonard Funeral Home, Lawrence with handling the arrangements.
Alice J. Watson
ST. JOSEPH - Alice J. Watson, 83, of Farmersburg, Ind., formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Crittenton Hospital, Rochester, Mich.
A Celebration of Life Service will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 18, at First Presbyterian Church, 475 Green St., Benton Harbor with Laurie Hartzell officiating. Visitation will be prior to the service from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Alice was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in New Lebanon, Ind., to William and Jesse (Milam) Watson. She married the former, John Watson on June 23, 1949, in Farmersburg. Together, they raised a son, John and two daughters, Mary Lee and Patty. Alice was a retired registered nurse with Benton Harbor Schools for more than 20 years. Alice was a life long Democrat. She was an avid reader, loved to play golf, knit, cook and camp. Most of all, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Alice is survived by her children, John T. (Deborah) Watson Jr. of Granger, Ind., Mary Lee (Deric) Jaques of West Bloomfield, Mich., Patty (Tom) Dennis of Rochester Hills, Mich.; sister, Virginia "Pat" Pirtle of Sullivan, Ind.; grandchildren, Jeremy, Megan, Shannon, Jessica, David; two great-grand children, Abigail and Nolan; one niece and four nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 1987, and her parents, William and Jesse Watson.
Linda Gale Krajecki
WATERVLIET - Linda Gale Krajecki, 55, of Watervliet, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at Community Hospital, Watervliet.
Friends may call Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor James Wade officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Linda was born on March 29, 1954, in Benton Harbor to Oather and Emma (Rogers) Mitchell. She worked as a cook at Bonnie Breakfast Nook in Benton Harbor. She married Ted Krajecki on May 19, 1979, at the Benton Harbor Church of God. She enjoyed shopping and rummage sales but her love was her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband, Ted of Watervliet; a son, Billy (Jennifer) Mitchell of Stevensville; two daughters, Angie (Victor Caldwell) Krajecki of Coloma, April Krajecki of Watervliet; 11 grandchildren, Joey Mitchell of Watervliet, Ashly Mitchell of Watervliet, Teddi Krajecki of Coloma, Tayla Krajecki of Coloma, Cassandra Bailey of Watervliet, William Bailey Watervliet, Emma Krajecki of Watervliet, Tia Caldwell of Coloma, Ryan Mitchell of Kentucky, Samantha Starrett of Stevensville, Amanda Starrett of Stevensville; five sisters, Peggy (Tony) Lloyd of Coloma, June (Herb) Loper of Coloma, Connie Mooneyhan of Coloma, Ruby (Dick) Everett of Coloma, Karen (Berry) Tourtellotte of Bangor; brother, Johnny (Anita) Mitchell of Bangor; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, four brothers, and a daughter, Stacy.
Donald J. Drake
HARTFORD - Donald J. Drake, 87 of Hartford went peacefully home to be with his Lord on Thursday, April 16, 2009.
Don, as he was known by all whom knew him, was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Bangor Township, the son of Curtis and Jean (Humphrey) Drake, both of whom preceded him in passing. Also preceding him in passing were his wife, Joyce on Sept. 21, 1997, a stepmother, Pansy Drake, a brother, Virgil Drake, and a brother-in-law, Donald Schroyer.
Don was a 1940 graduate of Hartford High School. He served his country honorably as a member of the United States Army during World War II. He was a successful fruit farmer all his life. He served as a member of the Hartford Public Schools School Board and as the supervisor of the Hartford Township Board.
He was a long time member of the Hartford Federated Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Gideons. Outside of work and church, Don was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. But most importantly, he was a wonderful husband, loving father and a man of integrity, who was known throughout the community as being an encourager, generous and a bold witness for his Lord.
Don is survived by four daughters, Karen (Stanley) Carey of Dowagiac, Jeri (Allyn) Anthony of Hartford, JoAnne (Douglas) Smith of Bangor and Kathleen (Kevin) Lantz of Troy, Ohio; grandchildren, Benjamin (Adrianne) Smith of Tampa, Fla., Peter Smith of Annapolis, Md., Timothy Smith and Marcus Smith, both of Bangor, David Lantz and Rebekah Lantz, both of Troy, Ohio. He is also survived by a brother, Curtis (Irene) Drake of Hartford, a sister, Shirley Schroyer of Bangor, a sister-in-law, Viola Drake of Bangor and several nieces and nephews.
The family will welcome friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 18, at the Hartford Federated Church. The service to honor his memory will commence at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19, at the church. Pastor Timothy Nyhuis will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford, where military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 6803, VFW Post 1137 and American Legion Post 362 and Auxiliary. The family asks memorial donations in Don's name be made to the Hartford Federated Church, Grace Christian School or to the Gideons. The family has entrusted the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, with handling the arrangements.
Valerie Moody
BENTON HARBOR - Valerie Moody, 54, of Benton Harbor, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at 9:09 a.m.
Valerie was born on April 26, 1954, to the union of Eddie and Linnie Mae (Rand) Hegler in Berrien County at Mercy Hospital. She attended Benton Harbor area Schools. Valerie enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 19, 1978, and was medical retired in 1985. She enjoyed shopping, biking, spending time with family, Kyle, and her "boy" Shelby (a standard size poodle). She accepted the Lord as her savior in 1966 and was baptized at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. Daniel E. Cook and remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home.
She served as a member and treasurer of the Nurses Guild Auxiliary of Progressive Missionary Baptist Church. Valerie performed a great job as treasurer. She also kept up with the purchasing of supplies until her health failed.
Valerie leaves to cherish fond memories in the hearts of: her sweet mother, Linnie M. Hegler; her sisters - Josephine Smith, Lela M. Guiton, Eddie L. Lowe, all of Benton Harbor, and Mary Cross of Irving, Texas; one brother, Joe E. Rand of Benton Harbor; a very special friend and care giver, Kyle Yates; and her dog, Shelby.
Family Hour was held on Monday, March 30, at 2 p.m. at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 245 Pipestone, Benton Harbor, officiated by the Rev. James O. Childs. Memorial contributions in honor of Valerie Moody can be given to her loving mother, Linnie M. Hegler.
Frances M. Weaver
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Frances M. Weaver, 93, of Grand Rapids, formerly of Berrien Springs, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, April 13, 2009, joining Charles, her husband of 50 years.
Frances was born May 1, 1915, in rural Berrien Springs, the daughter of Charles and Mae Schadel. She attended Berrien Springs schools, graduating in 1931, and received her bachelor of arts degree in education from Emmanuel Missionary College, now Andrews University. She taught in both the Baroda and Berrien Springs school systems. She was a lifelong member of the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church.
On Oct. 28, 1938, she married Charles L. Weaver of Berrien Springs. They made their home in Berrien Springs where they were active in church, school, community activities, and especially in music. After retirement they spent winters in Largo, Fla., at Town & Country Mobile Home Park. They celebrated 50 years of marriage on Oct. 28, 1988.
In 1993, Frances sold her home in Berrien Springs and moved to Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. She was an active volunteer and attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids.
In addition to her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by infant twin sons, Larry and Jerry; son, Dennis C. Weaver; and stepgrandson, Michael Brehm.
She is survived by her son, Mark (Jan Belke) Weaver of Kentwood, Mich.; daughter, Sharon (Ron) Archer of Plainwell; daughter-in-law, Carol (Lund) Weaver of Pahrump, Nev.; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 17, at the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church, with visitation at 10:30 a.m., and burial following in Rose Hill Cemetery. A memorial service will also be held at Clark Retirement Community in the Chapel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 18.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church Music Department in memory of Frances.
Darlene Ann Scott
SOUTH HAVEN - Darlene Ann Scott, 62, of South Haven died Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in South Haven.
She was born April 16, 1946, in South Haven to Daniel K. and Mildred A. (Brigham) Mayhak. Darlene married Donald Scott on Aug. 12, 1961, in Bloomingdale. Darlene worked as a machine operator in South Haven for many years for Bohn Aluminum, South Haven Coil and Noble retiring in 2007. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. Her favorite places to visit was Las Vegas and the Smokey Mountains.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Scott, who died in 1995; sister, Sandra Adams; and brother, William Mayhak.
She is survived by her daughter, Kim (Dale) Smothers of South Haven; three granddaughters, Linda (Brian) Caywood Johnson of Coloma, Toni (Justin Larion) Caywood and Brandy (C.J.) Caywood Clouse, both of Grand Junction; two great-grandchildren, Garrett Johnson and Jacob Clouse; and one brother, George (Judy) Mayhak of Rockford, Mich.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 18, from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of South Haven. Memorial services will begin Saturday at 1 p.m. at the church with Pastor Jerry Koller officiating. Memorial contributions can be made to The Organic Acidemia Association.
