Robert Charles Bradley
WATERVLIET - Robert Charles Bradley, 56, of Watervliet passed away recently at his residence suddenly, but of natural causes.
Robert was born on March 7, 1953, in St. Joseph to the late Charles E. and Ruby (Smith) Bradley.
Robert was a woodworker most of his life. He refinished antiques and did repair work on furniture. Also, he enjoyed spending time riding the roads with his motorcycle.
He is survived by three daughters, Robin (Robert) Adams of Coloma, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Baldwin of St. Joseph and Danee Tschirhart of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Carson Baldwin, Jackson Baldwin and Micayla Adams; a sister, Patricia Wilson of Gainesville, Ga.; and a stepbrother, Pete (Lori) Jorgenson of St. Joseph.
In keeping with Robert's wishes a service will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2009, at North Shore Memory Gardens at 11 a.m. with an hour of visitation held prior to the service. An interment will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert's memory to his family.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Services & North Shore Memory Gardens.
James E. Ray
PAW PAW - James E. Ray, 66, of Paw Paw went home to be with the Lord Monday, April 13, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.
Jim was born March 26, 1943, in Paw Paw, the son of Ivan and MaryJane Ray. His passion was spending time with his family, farming, and working in his flower garden. He enjoyed sharing "The Shack" with family and many friends. He served his community on the Gobles Pine Grove Fire Department and Ambulance. He was elected clerk and then supervisor of Almena Township and most recently commissioner of Van Buren County. He retired after 32 years with Farm Bureau Insurance. He attended the Bloomingdale Christian Church.
He was a great husband, dad, grandpa and friend.
Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Dale (nee Barber); three children, Bonnie (Matthew) Holochwost of Lawton, Pam Blakemore of Paw Paw, Kevin (Susie) Ray of Lawton; seven grandchildren, Ryan, Steve, Kalie, Kaitlin, Aaron, Nicole, Nathan; one sister, Linda (Jim) Hurst of Gobles; one brother, Bruce (Diane) Ray of Kalamazoo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant son, James Edward Ray Jr.
The family will meet friends Thursday 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gobles Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, www.dlmillerfuneralhome.com, and Friday 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Lawton Evangelical Mennonite Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Pastor Bill Napp officiating. A private graveside service will take place at a later date. The family suggests memorials to Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy to be used for Jeptha Lake Fen.
Quintis Sabu Pratt
BENTON HARBOR - Quintis Sabu Pratt, 24, was born to the union of Emmitt Pratt and Reba Behrbaum, in Seattle. Quintis attended the Covert School system.
Quintis Sabu Pratt passed Friday, April 3, 2009.
He is survived by his father, Emmitt Pratt, mother, Reba Behrbaum, four brothers, Gary Bazemore, Hezekiah Behrbaum, Zachariah Behrbaum and Emmitt Pratt Jr., three sisters, Chailotte Spring, Keisha Brown and Hannah Bazemore, grandfather, Robert Behrbaum, seven aunts and six uncles and a host of family and friends.
Memorial services will be held Thursday at Family Funeral Home from 10 to 11 a.m.
Marsue Bradley
BENTON HARBOR - Marsue Bradley, 82, of Benton Harbor passed away Saturday, April 11, 2009, at Lakeland Specialty Hospital in Berrien Center.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Matthew's Missionary Baptist Church, 2026 Highland Ave., Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Eddie Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Crystal Springs Cemetery. Friends may call beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the church.
Mrs. Bradley was born May 18, 1926, in Henning, Tenn., to Mark and Emma (Jarrett) Lake. On Oct. 12, 1946, she married the Rev. L.V. Bradley in Henning. Marsue was devoted to her family-raising 17 children and supporting her husband in his ministry at St. Matthew's. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Mrs. Bradley is survived by her children, L.V. (Mary) Bradley of Benton Harbor, Robert Bradley of Atlanta, Nevada Bradley of Chicago, Emmitt (Tracy) Bradley of Benton Harbor, Edward Bradley of Yorktown, Va., Eric (Gosia) Bradley of Miami, Fla., Timothy Bradley and Annie (Edward) Johnson, both of Benton Harbor, Virginia Bradley of Milwaukee, Linda Bradley of Benton Harbor, Vernell Bradley and Joyce Copperwood both of Grand Rapids; 35 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; her brother, James Lake of Henning; and three sisters, Ethel Mae Fields and Emma Jean Lake, both of Henning, and Lizzie Bennitt of Halls, Tenn.
Marsue was preceded in death by her husband the Rev. L.V. Bradley on Sept. 16, 2007; by five children, Billy Davis Bradley, Patricia Ann Bradley, Brenda Bradley, Betty Jean Bradley and Bobby Vinson Bradley; her son-in-law, Anderson Copperwood of Grand Rapids; her parents, Mark and Emma Lake of Henning; three brothers, Ulysses and Charles Lake of Henning, Marvin Lake of Detroit; two sisters, Willie Bea Johnson of Chicago and Louise Wright of Henning; two brothers-in-law, Freddie Lee Fields and Henry Wright of Henning; and a sister-in-law, Annie Vera Lake of Detroit.
Donald W. Vanderboegh
BARODA - Donald Warren Vanderboegh, 81, of Mansfield, Ohio, formerly of Baroda, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 5, 2009, at MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.
Donald was born July 1, 1927, in Baroda, to Gerald George and Lucille Edith (Storick) Vanderboegh. He had retired from Whirlpool after more than 30 years as quality assurance/quality control manager. He was a member of Quality ASQ and was an avid reader of history and current events. Don was always out to change the world as a gamest and author. He was also a member of the Poets Society. Don loved to bowl, was inducted into the bowling hall of fame in Marion, and used to teach children how to bowl. He also loved cars and used to collect Corvairs.
Along with his wife, Charlene Vanderboegh, he is survived by two sons, Dwight (Cheryl) Vanderboegh of North Carolina and Mike (Rose) Vanderboegh of Pinson, Ala.; one daughter, Terri (Jim) Lehman of Lexington, Ky.; one stepson, Clarence "Shorty" (Stacie) Shoemaker of Mansfield; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Jack (Doris) Vanderboegh of Stevensville; three sisters, Elizabeth (Jerry) Squyres of Dallas, Jerrie (Henry) Schinske of Berrien Center and Joan (Richard) Silverthorn of Baroda.
Donald was preceded in death by one daughter, Meri Kay Vanderboegh; one brother, Bill Vanderboegh; one sister, Coral Mae Vanderboegh; and his parents.
The funeral was held on April 9 at Werner Funeral Home in Mansfield. Burial was in Mansfield Memorial Park.
Jack Martorano
SOUTH HAVEN - Jack Martorano, 82, of South Haven passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Countryside Nursing Home in South Haven.
A Memorial Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, at St. Bernard's Catholic Church, 555 Delaware, in Benton Harbor, with Fr. Bill Jacobs officiating. Visitation with the family will follow the service at church. Burial will be private at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Hospice of South Haven, Lori's Place, or to the Shriner's Children Hospital in Chicago.
Jack was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Chicago to Joseph and Mary Martorano. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Jack owned and operated Martorano Pizza in this area for nearly 50 years where he enjoyed friends, music, food and laughter. He attended St. Bernard's Catholic Church and was a member of the Shriners. He "had a zest for life which included fellowship with his many friends." Above all, Jack loved his family and cherished time spent with his grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his children, Marianne Martorano of Stevensville, Joseph (Margaret) Martorano of Western Springs, Ill., Christine (Keith) Kolberg of St. Joseph and Phillip (Jacqueline) Martorano of McHenry, Ill.; former wife, Palma Martorano; grandchildren, Alexandra Chinick, Matthew, Michael and Anna Martorano; sister, Roselyn (Joseph) Sax of Stevensville; brother-in-law, Frank Barry; sisters-in-law, Sharon, Mitzi, Imogene Martorano; and by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandson, Joseph Patrick "Jo-Jo" Martorano; brothers, Peter, Leo and Fred Martorano; and by his sister, Mary Barry.
Sue Ann Adams
DOWAGIAC - Sue Ann Adams, 61, of Dowagiac, passed away on Friday, April 10, 2009, at her home.
Sue's life began on July 12, 1947, in Watervliet, the daughter of Harold and Doris (Jones) Conklin. She was united in marriage to Dennis K. Adams on May 8, 1965 in Escanaba, Mich. Sue worked as a sterilization tech for the Smile Center.
She is survived by a daughter, Vicky (Roger) Strimbu of Three Oaks; daughter-in-law, Khristeene Adams of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren - Brian (Vanessa) Deuel of Buchanan, Brandon (Heather) Deuel of Baroda, and Katelyn, Dixie and R. J. Strimbu, all of Three Oaks; great-grandson, Landon Deuel of Buchanan; brothers, George (Lori) Conklin of Florida, and Raymond (Carol) Conklin of St. Joseph; sisters, Sandy James of Sodus and Diane (Cameron) Perryman of Valparaiso, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; and her faithful dog, Mr. Skipper.
She is preceded in death by her son, Keith Alan Adams; and her parents, Harold and Doris Conklin.
A private family and friends gathering is being arranged for a later date. McLauchlin-Clark Funeral Home is serving the family.
Betty J. Fowler
BENTON HARBOR - Betty J. Fowler, 75, of Benton Harbor passed away Wednesday afternoon, April 8, 2009, at her home after a long and courageous fight against cancer.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 13, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, 1053 E. Napier Ave., in Benton Harbor, with Pastor J. Dean Pickett. Burial will follow in North Shore Memory Gardens in Hagar Shores. Visitation with the family will be held Sunday afternoon from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to either Hospice at Home or to the Berrien County Cancer Service.
Betty was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Jeffersonville, Ind., to Benjamin and Rosemon Leach. On Sept. 14, 1980, she married Robert Fowler. Betty worked for many years at the cosmetic counter at Osco Drug Stores. She enjoyed working with the public. She also enjoyed bowling, taking care of her yard, and doing crafts, including crocheting. Betty will be remembered for her outgoing and outspoken personality. Her grandchildren affectionately will remember her as the 'Warden' who was always both "loving and forgiving." Most of all, Betty cherished time spent with her family and particularly loved attending annual family picnics.
Betty is survived by her husband, Robert; children - Ron, Rick and Mark Smith, and Beverly (Jeff) Charleston; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Johnson; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by five siblings.
