Elizabeth R. Schlutt
STEVENSVILLE - Elizabeth R. Schlutt, 94, of Stevensville went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 27, at SS John/Bernard Church, 555 Delaware, Benton Harbor, with Fr. Bill Jacobs officiating. Visitation with the family will be at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph on Sunday, April 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. with a rosary recited at 5 p.m. Visitation will also be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, April 27, at the church. Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to SS. John/Bernard Catholic Church or the Readiness Center. Elizabeth was born on Feb. 15, 1915, in New York City, N.Y., to Adam and Rosalie (Deri) Oberle. On April 22, 1939, she married Lawrence Schlutt in Watervliet. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1988. Elizabeth was a devoted and loving wife, mother and friend. In her spare time she enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends. Faith and family were her priorities.
She is survived by her son, Louis Schlutt of Stevensville; two daughters, Gladys (Robert) Walsh of Beverly Hills, Mich., and Mary (Richard) Schulte of Brooklyn, Mich.; four grandchildren, Annemarie, Larry, Caryn and Eileen; two great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two children, Lawrence and Rosalie; two sisters, Rosemary (Horton) Davis and Teresa Schmuhl; and two brothers, Jacob and Louis Oberle.
Charles F. Claywell
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Charles F. Claywell, 76, of Berrien Springs, went to be in the hands of the Lord on Thursday morning, April 23, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, following a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27, at the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Cindy Parsons officiating. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at the Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs, and to leave messages of condolence online at www.allredfuneralhome.com. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Charles' memory may be made to the church.
Charles was born in Terre Haute (Vigo County), Ind., on Nov. 23, 1932, the son of Earl C. and Harriett M. (Jamison) Claywell. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1951, and he proudly served his country aboard the U.S.S. Roanoke, CL145, in the Mediterranean. He achieved the rank of 2nd class Machinist Mate, and he was discharged from service in 1954. He graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1956, after completing the Acme School of Tool Design in 1955.
On July 25, 1959, he married Mary Anne Miller in Chesterton, Ind., at the First Methodist Church, and they have lived in Berrien Springs since 1962. In his earlier years while living in South Bend, Charles was active in the S.P.E.B.Q.S.A. He worked in the field of drafting, design, and checking for 42 years for various companies in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. He enjoyed gardening and his home on Tudor Road and tending to his various trees and plants. The Claywells were members of the People of Praise in South Bend for 18 years and presently attended the Berrien Springs United Methodist Church and the Reynolds Chapel United Methodist Church in Donalsonville, Ga., and sang in the choir. Charles and Mary Anne were snowbirds, spending their winters volunteering for the National Park Service in Florida and California, and for the Army Corp of Engineers in Georgia. They enjoyed Georgia so much that they continued to camp there in the winter until this past winter.
Charles is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; two daughters, Marnie Dee Claywell and Laura Lee Claywell, both of Everett, Wash.; and a nephew, Robin Knutzen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his half-sister, Mary Belle Knutzen; and a nephew, Derek.
Johnnie Ashley
WATERVLIET - Johnnie's life began Nov. 22, 1929, in Dyess, Ark. He retired from Comstock Michigan Fruit Canners in 1991 after 23 years. Johnnie loved to trade and mow his lawn.
His loving family includes, his children, Kathy (Hency) Naka of Coloma, Sharon Cox of Phoenix, Ariz., Terry (Cheryl Ashley of Coloma, Doug (Deb) Ashley of Coloma, Kenneth (Marlena) Ashley of Coloma, Chris (Richard) Nitz of Watervliet; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Deborah Ashley of Coloma.
Johnnie died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at Community Hospital in Watervliet.
His wife Jean Ashley whom he was married to for 40 years, two sons, Ron and Gary, a great-granddaughter, Hope, a son-in-law, Gary Cox, and his parents, Heskel and Gladys (Flana) Ashley preceded Johnnie in death.
Friends may visit with Johnnie's family Sunday, April 26, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet. Funeral services celebrating Johnnie's life will be held Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Watervliet. Memorials may be made in Johnnie's memory to Hospice.

Lindell Eugene Carlisle
HARTFORD - Lindell Eugene Carlisle, 74 of Hartford, passed away Wednesday, April 22, 2009, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo.
Lindell was born Nov. 9, 1934, in Parma, Mo., the son of Hubert and Leona (Brown) Carlisle, both of whom preceded him in passing.
Lindell retired from Friday Tractor in Hartford after 44 years of faithful service. Outside of the workplace, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping in the outdoors and building wood products, especially cabinets.
Lindell married the former Treva Conner on Feb. 19, 1952. She survives, along with children, Dwayne (Tamara) Carlisle of Grand Junction, Colo., Larry (Karen) Carlisle and Brenda (Doug) Musiak, both of Hartford, Diana (James) Middleton of Coloma, Perry (Susan) Carlisle of Vicksburg, Teresa (David Sparks) Carlisle of Kalamazoo and Mike (Peggy) Carlisle of Lawrence. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joyce (Allen) Helton of Missouri, and Sharon Larion of Harrison; and a brother, Gary (Genita) Carlisle of Eufaula, Ala.
The family will welcome friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at the Calvin Funeral Home, Hartford, where the service to honor his memory will commence at 2 p.m. Missionary Dean Brown will serve as officiant. Burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hartford. The family requests memorial donations in Lindell's name be made to the South Haven Area Hospice.
Heaven Marie Lewis
BENTON HARBOR - Baby Girl, Heaven Marie Lewis went home to her Lord and Savior, shortly after birth, on Friday, April 10, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph. She was the cherished daughter of Kevin Lewis and Akela Valentine of Benton Harbor.
A graveside burial will be held at 11 a.m. today, April 24, at North Shore Memory Gardens in Coloma. Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
Heaven is survived by her loving parents, Kevin and Akela; grandparents, Mildred Lewis of Grand Rapids, Glen Bishop of Lansing, Leon and Thelma Anderson of Benton Harbor; great grandparents, Leotha and Maurice Bishop of Benton Harbor; four brothers, Kevin Lewis II, Malachi McNeil, Devon Bryant, Gregory Hill; and two sisters, Jasmine Lewis and Shakia Hill.
Anton 'Tony' May
LAWRENCE - Tony passed away Thursday morning, April 23, 2009, at his home.
He was born June 27, 1925, in Chicago, the son of the late Anton and Sophie (Krusinski) May. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater as a medic. He was employed as a Union cement mason for 37 years until his retirement. He loved gardening, woodworking, fishing and playing the harmonica. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Paw Paw and the Celery City V.F.W. Post 6248 in Decatur.
On May 29, 1948, in Chicago, Tony was united in marriage to Angeline "Angie" Koziol who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Matthew and Neal (Susan) May, both of Chicago; two grandsons, Brian and Jason of Chicago; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ted, Henry and Fred.
Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Adams Funeral Home, Paw Paw where a vigil service will be held Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, April 27, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Paw Paw. Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Paw Paw. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southwest Michigan.
Dawn Marie Brooks
SOUTH BEND - Dawn Marie Brooks, 29, formerly of Benton Township, died in a house fire on Tuesday, April 21, 2009, in South Bend, Ind.
Dawn was born to Maria (Rogers) and Irey L. Brooks on April 19, 1980, in Benton Harbor. She attended Lake Michigan Catholic Elementary School in Benton Harbor. Her family moved to South Bend in 1992, and she attended Jackson Middle School and Riley High School. Dawn was employed at a local hotel in South Bend. She enjoyed backyard cookouts with her family and friends, swimming, horseback riding, and snowmobiling. She also loved to play video games and to go to garage sales with her nephew, Austin. Dawn gave the gift of life to her two beautiful sons whom she loved very much. She particularly loved going to the park and playing games with her youngest son, Matthew.
Dawn is survived by her mother, Maria Humphries; stepfather, Raymond Humphries, both of Plymouth, Ind.; brother, Richard L. Brooks of Mishawaka, Ind.; two sisters, Nicole L. Brooks of Stevensville and Bethany Farmer of South Bend; and by her stepbrother, Timothy Humphries, also of South Bend.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 25, at St. John's Catholic Church, 600 Columbus Ave., in Benton Harbor, with Father Bill Jacobs officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be held today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Services, 1053 E. Napier, Benton Harbor, with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be directed to any 1st Source Bank in the name of the Dawn M. Brooks' Memorial Fund for her funeral expenses.
