Stella Bishop
Life member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church
Stella Bishop, 92, of Muskegon died Monday, Feb. 3 in Muskegon.
She was born July 30, 1910 to Albert and Cornelia (Workman) Osterhart in Muskegon. On Nov. 16, 1928 she married Clarence E. Bishop and he preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1992.
Mrs. Bishop was an active lifetime member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church where she was an officer of the Young Woman's Guild, Women's Fellowship and a member of the Intermediate Club. She was a longtime Muskegon resident where she taught Children's Bible Club at Angell School and Vacation Bible School at the Mona Lake Mission. She worked with the Bible League's Project Phillip for many years and was active in the Jefferson Tower's Bible study group. She was a member of the Muskegon Rescue Mission Auxiliary, Gideon's Auxiliary and the Hackley Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Barbara (Thomas) Holtrop of Muskegon and Kathryn A. Spink of Grand Haven; three sons, Allan (Irene) Bishop of Ripon, Calif.; Charles (Elaine) Bishop of Bombay, N.Y. and Douglas (Bonnie) Bishop of Jackson; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Jeanette Osterhart of Brighton and Gladys Osterhart of Muskegon; one brother-in-law, Kenneth (Minnie) Bishop of Grand Haven; cousins, Harold (Ruth) Workman of Muskegon; Henry Yonker of Grand Rapids; Howard Workman of Allegan and Harry (Joyce) Osterhart of Muskegon, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Achterhoff Funeral Home of Muskegon.
The funeral service for Mrs. Stella Bishop will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003 at Bethany Christian Reformed Church, 1105 Terrace Street with Pastor Lou Roossien officiating. Interment in Restlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Achterhoff Funeral Home, 1751 Peck Street and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethany Christian Reformed Church or the Muskegon Rescue Mission.

Ford Johnson
Earned seven battle stars during WWII
Ford A. Johnson, 91, of Spring Lake, formerly of Sun City, Ariz. died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003 at Shore Haven Nursing Home in Grand Haven.
He was born Aug. 24, 1911 to Arthur and Margaret (Williams) Johnson in Moline, Ill.
Preceding in death were his parents; and his brother, Kenny Johnson.
On June 27, 1934 he married Miss Beulah Stotmeister, who survives him. Also surviving are his children: Roger (Liz) Johnson of Weston, Colo., and Jerry (Lin) Johnson of Spring Lake, Mich; grandchildren: Charis (Jesse) Uhlson of Denver, Colo., Jennifer Johnson of Honolulu, HI, Steve(Stacey) Johnson of Grandville, Mich., Matt (Cheri) Johnson of Skandia, Mich.; three beautiful great granddaughters, Brianna, Kayla and Jacey; and sister, Darlene Nordquist of Fort Collins, Colo. He was a member of Willow Brook Church in Sun City, Ariz. Ford served in the United States Navy during the Second World War in the Pacific Theater earning 7 Battle Stars, and was in Tokyo Harbor at the singing of the surrender in 1945. He served on the Light Cruiser Pasadena. He was a retiree of Peter Kiewit Sons Construction Co. supervising the construction of large dams and powerhouses around the country; Garrison Dam in North Dakota; Monticello Dam in Northern California; and the Flaming Gorge Dam in Dutch John, Utah. Upon retiring, Ford was an avid bowler and a talented wood carver.

Services for Mr. Ford A. Johnson will be announced at a later date. Interment will be in Dayton Cemetery, Ill. For those who wish, a memorial contribution may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Association for the Blind, or a Charity of one's choice.

Katherine Schmidt
Graduated from University of Mich. in 1940
Katherine Ann Cramer Schmidt, 85, of Novi died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born March 29, 1917, to Dr. Jacob and Clara (Ruoff) Cramer in Muskegon. She married Harold W. Schmidt on Nov. 25, 1942. Mr. Schmidt preceded her in death on Oct. 8, 1980.
She was born and raised in Muskegon, and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Michigan in 1940. She worked as a lab technician at Hackley Hospital in Muskegon until her marriage and move to Detroit in 1942. Mrs. Schmidt moved to Northville in 1953 and lived there until 1998 when she moved to the Grand Court Retirement Center in Novi. She enjoyed bridge, pinochle, reading, cars and animals.
Survivors include her sons, Harold C. (Carol) Schmidt of Spring Lake and David D. Schmidt of Germany; a daughter, Barbara C. (John) Wolfston of Traverse City; grandchildren: Jennifer and Timothy Gatz, Jeffrey and Kristi Schmidt, Julie and Matthew Williams, and Katherine and John Wolfston; great-grandson, Justin Gatz; and by many friends, including Betty Morley, Jean Dedes and Bert Doty.
Arrangements are being handled by the family.
A memorial service will be held at the Grand Court Chapel in Novi on Feb. 8, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of your choice. A special thanks to the fine staff at Huron Valley Sinai Hospital for their compassionate care.
Rae Marie Brien
Worked as a saleswoman for J. Magnin's
Rae Marie Elaine Brien, 82, of Gardnerville, Nev., (formerly of Grand Haven) died Jan. 1, 2003, in a Carson City, Nev. hospital.
She was born on May 8, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, to James DeSanto and Katherine Legatz. She moved to Grand Haven in 1938 where she lived until 1963.
She met Thomas Brien who was working at the Grand Haven Tribune from 1961 to 1962 in the editorial department. They married in 1963 and moved to South Lake Tahoe, Calif. She worked as a saleswoman for J. Magnin's. In 1972 they moved to Gardnerville.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas Brien of Gardnerville, and daughter, Leanore Kendall of Reno, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Katherine Legatz-Handte, and a brother, James Charles DeSanto.
Geraldine Bakale
Nurse's aid at NOCH pediatrics
Geraldine I. Bakale, 81, of Grand Haven died Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at a Muskegon hospital.
She was born July 24, 1921 to Theodore and Edith M. (Dreese) VandenBerg in Ferrysburg, and married Paul J. Bakale on Oct. 18, 1941, in Grand Haven.
Mrs. Bakale had been a nurse's aid in pediatrics at North Ottawa Community Hospital. She was a member of Second Reformed Church where she was also a member of the Ladies Circle and helped with Children's Bible School. Her interests included camping, gardening, her grandchildren and the out-of-doors.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Paul; daughter, Linda Schroeder of Grand Haven; two sons, Larry (Alice) Bakale of Grand Haven and Roger (Pamela) Bakale of Shrewsbury, Mass.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Wallace "Wally" Schroeder.

A funeral service for Mrs. Bakale will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Second Reformed Church with Rev. Lary Jackson officiating. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Sunday at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lake Forest Cemetery. Friends are asked to remember the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.

Evelyn Clawson
Retired from Dresser Industries
Evelyn G. Clawson, 82, of Inverness, Fla. (formerly of Muskegon), died Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003.
She was born in Muskegon on Jan. 25, 1921 to Carl and Gertrude (Johnson) Beattie and married Arthur L. Stordahl in Sandusky, Ohio in 1940, who preceded her in death on March 21, 1970. She married Eugene Clawson in 1978 in Muskegon, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 15, 1999.
Mrs. Clawson had been employed as a data entry supervisor for Dresser Industries until retiring. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Inverness, Fla.. Mrs. Clawson was a Volunteer for Meals on Wheels, charter member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church of Muskegon and formerly Trinity Lutheran Church of Muskegon.
Survivors include one son, Dale (Jean) Stordahl of Spring Lake; three grandchildren, Steve Hicks of Lansing, Scott Hicks of Venice, Fla. and Alison Marie Stordahl of Spring Lake; two great-grandchildren, Carolyn and Kirsten Hicks; two brothers, Frederick (Doris) Erhorn of Nunica and Orville C. (Mary) Beattie of Lake Forest, Ill.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ellen Clawson in 1976 and by a brother, Walter Erhorn in June of 1999.
Arrangements are being handled by Clock Funeral Home of Muskegon.
A service for Mrs. Evelyn Clawson will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, 2003, 11 a.m. at the Clock Chapel with Rev. Dennis Lasanske officiating. Interment at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday, one hour prior to the service at Clock Funeral Home. Memorials: Alzheimer's Association or American Diabetes Association.

Clarence Seitz
Worked for Michigan Bell Telephone Company
Clarence L. Seitz, 97, of Grand Haven died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2003.
He was born April 29, 1905, to John and Grace (Purdy) Seitz in Pentwater and married Dorothy E. Harris on Sept. 17, 1965, in Six Lakes. She died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003.
His first wife, Mabel Roman, also preceded him in death on July 2, 1994.
Mr. Seitz had been employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company for many years. He and his wife spent several years in Florida prior to returning to Michigan in 2002. His interests included telephones, radios, tools and photography.
Along with his wives, he was preceded in death by granddaughter Kelly LaFlame, who died in 1981, and grandson Lawrence Seitz, who died in 2002.
Survivors include his daughters, Joyce VanBlargan, Nunica, Bessie May Beach, Muskegon, Donna (Bill) Sumerix, Muskegon and son William Seitz, White Cloud; sister Cecilia Rollins, Grand Haven and many grandchildren.
A private graveside services will be held at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Muskegon.
