Lula Saylor
BANGOR - Lula Saylor, age 91, of Bangor passed away Saturday, May 9, 2009, at home.
The family will meet friends on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bangor Chapel, D. L. Miller Funeral Home, and a funeral service will be held Wednesday 1 p.m. at the New Beginnings Ministries, 26326 CR 681, Bangor, with Pastor Mack Travis and the Rev. Richard Burns officiating. Lula was born July 11, 1917, in Molus, Ky., the daughter of Grover and Catherine Saylor, and has lived in the Bangor area since 1970. She was a member of the New Beginnings Ministries and was a faithful servant of the Lord.
Surviving are her son, H. K. Noe of Hartford; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Noe (Hershal) Horton of Bangor; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Juanita Burcham of Wisconsin and Rosetta Barker of Kentucky; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hayes Saylor; son Hershal Noe; grandson, David Noe; two brothers, George and H. K. Saylor; and two sisters, Sue Tabor and Martha Bell.
Alvy G. Dickson
BENTON TOWNSHIP - Alvy G. Dickson, 86, of Benton Township passed away Thursday evening, May 7, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at the Fairplain Chapel of Florin Funeral Service, 1053 E. Napier Ave., Benton Harbor, with the Rev. Daniel D. Miller officiating. Burial will follow in Millburg Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Church of Christ.
Alvy was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Kennett, Mo. He was one of 14 children born to Andrew and Mary Dickson. On Dec. 9, 1950, he married Mary Alice Franks and together they had one son, Larry. Alvy retired from Clark Equipment as an assembler after more than 30 years of employment. Both he and his brothers were skilled carpenters. Additionally, he enjoyed gardening. Alvy will be remembered as a "fun and special" man who loved his family and knew the Lord as his personal Savior.
Alvy is survived by his wife, Mary Alice; grandson, Frankie Snow Dickson; sister, Lois Pelton of Melton, Fla.; and by many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Larry, in 2006; and by his siblings, Zelmer, Euna, Opal, Elmer, Chelmer, Elzie, Orville and Wilma.
Susan M. Henwood
ST. JOSEPH - Susan M. Henwood, 47, of St. Joseph, passed away from recently diagnosed leukemia on April 18, 2009.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Steven J. Henwood.
Surviving are her parents, James and Iris Henwood; niece, Ashley, and her mother, Sandra; Uncle Jack and Aunt Joan Calvin of Traverse City; and cousins.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, at the First Church of God, St. Joseph. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Church of God or South West Michigan De Colores Ministries, P.O. Box 225, Niles, MI 49210.
The family is being served by Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service, Grand Rapids, Mich.
Robert J. Nelson
WATERVLIET - Bob's life began Sept. 7, 1957, in Watervliet. Bob spent his childhood growing up in Watervliet, graduating from Watervliet High School. After high school, Bob attended Detroit Barber College and then returned to the area where he owned Nelson's Barber Shop in Coloma for 32 years. Bob loved to hunt, fish and cook. He was an avid Notre Dame and Green Bay Packers fan. Bob will be remembered for how he loved life and would do anything to help a family member or friend. Many people in the area will forever remember him as Barber Bob.
Bob's greatest love was for his family which includes: two children, Heather Nelson and Kevin Nelson, both of Watervliet; his mother, Frances Nelson of Watervliet; two brothers, Gary (Denise) Nelson and Larry (Cathy) Nelson, both of Coloma; and a sister, Jackie (Barney) Hiler of Watervliet.
Bob died Friday, May 8, 2009, at Rose Arbor Hospice in Kalamazoo.
His father, Robert Nelson, precedes Bob in death.
Friends may visit with Bob's family Monday, May 11, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Hutchins Funeral Home in Watervliet. A memorial mass will be celebrated Tuesday, May 12, at 11 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Watervliet. Memorials may be made in Bob's memory to Rose Arbor Hospice.
Karen Jo (Pelkey) Hillegas
ST. JOSEPH - Karen Jo (Pelkey) Hillegas, 49, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away on Saturday, May 16, 2009, in Lakeland, Fla.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22, at Zion United Church of Christ, 9100 Church St., Baroda, Mich. 49101 with the Rev. Christopher Noffke officiating. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph, Mich. 49085. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Humane Society of Southwestern Michigan.
Karen Jo was born on Feb. 9, 1960, to Richard and Joan (Kronos) Pelkey in Benton Harbor. She was legal secretary for many years. She married Steve Hillegas on March 19, 2005, on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. She lived in Lakeland, Fla., for the past three years. Karen Jo loved billiards and NASCAR. She was an avid reader and adored her many animals. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family.
Karen Jo is survived by her loving husband, Steve; her children, Ryan and Audra, children Kristan and Don Bush, Ashlee Krukowski and Heather Hillegas; her mother, Joan Pelkey; sisters, Connie (Ken) Conklin, Cheryl Pelkey, Lynn (Daryl) Schlender, Kim (David) Fritz, a brother, Terry (Sharna) Pelkey; sisters-in-law, Sandy (Brent) Proffitt and Susan (Stephen) Rimar; nieces and nephews, Karla, Ken, Aaron, Brett, Jared, Emily, Laura, Autumn, Meghan, Anna, Hubbell and Amy.
She was preceded in death by her father, Richard Pelkey.
Trelas Alfred Dyson Sr.
BENTON HARBOR- Trelas Alfred Dyson Sr. was born Feb. 5, 1936, in Silver Creek, La., to the union of Pledo and Wilvia Dyson.
Trelas departed this life on Friday, May 15, 2009, at the age of 73.
Services will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today, May 20, at Hoven Funeral Home, Buchanan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pledo and Wilvia Dyson; one brother, Otis Dyson; one sister, Velda Dyson; and three grandchildren, Allen Du'Juan, Michael and Micah Dyson.
He leaves to cherish his memories his children, George (Cynthia) Dyson of Moss Point, Miss., Brenda Hammond of North Carolina, Trelas Alfred (Linda) Dyson Jr., Randell Dyson, Pledo Rodney (Micole) Dyson, Michael Wayne (Anita) Dyson, all of Benton Harbor, Wilvia Danette (Donald) Green of Kalamazoo and Tristan (Camilla) Dyson of Amite, La.; 60 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lutrell, Dallas, Ivory and Leon Dyson, all of Amite; four sisters, Virginia, Hazel, Ethel and Helen Dyson, all of Amite; and a special friend, Annette Doss.
Marie Helen Bollwahn
SOUTH HAVEN - Marie Helen Bollwahn, 78, of South Haven died Monday, May 18, 2009, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus in Grand Rapids.
She was born June 11, 1930, in Chicago, to Arthur and Bertha (Schnieder) Bendeich. Marie was in the high school graduating class of 1948. She married Larry Bollwahn on Oct. 4, 1952, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Marie worked as a nurses' aid at South Haven Community Hospital along with S.E. Overton Company and Crown Frame in Ganges. Marie also did child care out of her home. Marie was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband - Larry Bollwahn of South Haven; one son - Paul (Linda) Bollwahn and one daughter - Debra Bollwahn, both of South Haven; two grandchildren - Brooke (Chad) Stotler and Jillian Bollwahn; one brother - Carl Bendeich of Minneapolis, Minn.; two nieces - Lisa Bendeich and Lori Holaack; and one nephew - Mark Bendeich.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at the Filbrandt Family Funeral Home, South Haven. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Clint Rogas officiating. Burial will take place in Lakeview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
Rick Wayne Cowgill
COLOMA - Rick Wayne Cowgill, 49, of Ferrysburg, Mich., formerly of Coloma, died Friday, May 15, 2009. He was born on Aug. 19, 1959 to Verlyn and Valarie (Gipson) Cowgill and married the former Wanda Curl in 1983. Mr. Cowgill served his country in the U.S. Army. He had been employed as a carpenter at Purcell's in Grand Haven. Rick loved hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda; daughter, Erin Cowgill; grandchildren, Jazlynn Cowgill, Conner Debner and Riley Schmidt; father, Verlyn (Jerry) Cowgill of Coloma; mother, Valarie Cowgill of Watervliet; grandmother, Ruth Cowgill of Watervliet; brother, Kevin Cowgill of Coloma; sister, Kathy (Robert) Hornbarger of Missouri; best friend, Steve Milnickel of Berrien Center: stepsons, Brandon Harris of California, David Sanchez of Ohio; stepbrothers, Steve (Dlorah) Craig of Watervliet, Larry Craig of Coloma and stepsister, Mary Craig of Georgia.
Services will be Wednesday, May 20, at 3 p.m. at Clock Life Story Funeral Home, Grand Haven, Mich., with the Rev. Mark Manning officiating.
