Isabel Shuler
BERRIEN SPRINGS - Isabel Shuler, 90, of Berrien Springs went to sleep on Saturday, May 16, 2009, in her own bed, in her own home, and surrounded by people that loved her.
Isabel was born and raised in New York City. As much as she enjoyed the city, Isabel had a hankering for a slower pace of life. She met and fell in love with Berrien Springs boy Carrell 'Bud' Shuler during World War II. They married and moved back to Bud's boyhood home in Berrien Springs, where they moved only once - across the street where Isabel continued to live for some 45 years.
Isabel worked as a bookkeeper for many years for both Martin Fishell and Raymond Roberts. She set a good example as a hard-working career woman as well as a great mom. Isabel was a long-time member of the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church.
The couple raised three children, Carrell 'Bud' (Susan) Shuler II, Marijane (Robert) Mosher and Peter Jon (Jamie Beckett) Shuler.
Isabel is survived by her children; four grandchildren, Christopher (Angela) Shuler, Molly (Jerret) Pate, Ann (Will) Cordis and Robert Mosher; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, JoAnn Herford, many friends and neighbors and special helper, Constanza Munoz.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away in 1998; her great-granddaughter, Abigail Shuler; her parents, David and Florence Jenny; her brother, David J. Jenny; and beloved cousin, Grace Breyan.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at the Allred Funeral Home, 212 South Main St., Berrien Springs, where a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 21. Annette King
BENTON HARBOR - Annette King was born Oct. 15, 1967, to Freddie Mae and Willie Edward King Jr. in Benton Harbor. She departed this life on May 14, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph.
Annette graduated from Coloma High School in 1985 and attended Muskegon Business College in Muskegon, Mich. Annette resided in Benton Harbor for most of her life. She accept Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was currently a member of First Assembly Church of God . She will be remembered for her courageous strength and faith. Annette loved people and had many friends. Annette was employed at Lowe's until her health failed her.
She leaves to cherish her memories her mother, Freddie Mae King, two brothers, her twin Anthony King and Martin King of Indianapolis; three sisters, Wilma King, Sherry (Kenneth) Stringer and Monica King of Indianapolis; great- aunt, Maggie Wallace of Benton Harbor; grandfather, Willie Ed King Sr. of Benton Harbor; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Annette was preceded in death by her father, Willie E. King Jr., an aunt Martha Childs-Rogers, and her grandmothers, Mary Williams and Zelma King.
Funeral services will begin at 12 p.m. with visitation at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22, at the First Assembly Church of God in St. Joseph. Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Anthony Donell Hall
BENTON HARBOR - Anthony Donell Hall, 40, of Benton Harbor departed from this life on May 7, 2009, at 2 p.m. at his home. He was born Dec. 12, 1968. He was affectionately called "Hoggie D." He loved to fish, listen to music, tell jokes and visit with family and friends.
He leaves behind cherished memories of his life to his mother, Frances Hall-Hull and father, Willie Thompson, stepfather, Alford Hull, sisters, Sheilah and Kontiqueia Hall, four nieces, Brandy, Thresha, DezJane and Vareecia, four nephews, Chantal, Thaddius, Antonio and Landonn, special friend, Tiffani Watson, and a host of family and friends.
Services will be Friday at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, visitation at 11 a.m. and service at 12 p.m. Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Maxine Newton
ST. JOSEPH - Maxine Newton, 88, formerly of St. Joseph, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Jordan's Nursing Home in Bridgman.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Duffield & Pastrick Family Funeral Home in Coloma. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. immediately prior to the service. Burial will follow at North Shore Memory Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Gideons International. Maxine was born on July 28, 1920, in Hornersville, Mo., to Franklin and Margie (Haire) Moore. Although her given name is Dortha Maxine, she is best known as "Max" or "Granny" to friends and family. She worked for many years at Hardings Market in Watervliet, retiring in 1974. She was a member of the Niles Avenue Baptist Church in St. Joseph, and prior to that at Midway Baptist Church in Watervliet. Max was a great southern cook. She also enjoyed sewing, painting, camping, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Her greatest love though was being with her family.
Maxine is survived by her three daughters, Marla (Raymond) Cerny of Benton Harbor, Beverly (Bobby) Peart of Benton Harbor, Barb Katowich of St. Joseph; her son, Larry (Melba) Newton, also of Benton Harbor; two sisters, Catherine Trainor of Kennett, Mo., and Delberta Brainard of Oklahoma City, Okla.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, B. "Jake" Newton, in 1989, granddaughter, Brenda Cerny in 1996, one brother, and one sister.
Herbert A. Latislaw
BENTON HARBOR - Herbert A. Latislaw, 74, of Benton Harbor died at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 17, 2009, at his home, unexpectedly, but of natural causes.
He was born on Jan. 11, 1935, in Eau Claire to Otto and Elizabeth (Goetz) Latislaw. He graduated from Niles High School in 1953, and had lived in Benton Harbor for 30 years. He was retired from the former John Yerrington Company.
Mr. Latislaw enjoyed using the computer and the internet. He is well remembered caring for his pets, and for his family.
On April 3, 1982, in Sodus, he married the former Betty Jane Roscher, who survives. Also surviving are his daughter, Debera (Daniel) Finch of Niles; stepchildren, Harry Craft of Texas and Elizabeth Craft of Benton Harbor; five grandchildren including Mark Craft, who spent much time with grandpa; several great-grandchildren; and Herb's sister, Margaret Huber of Niles; and brothers, Robert Latislaw of Niles and Jim Latislaw of Three Rivers.
He was preceded in death by a stepson, William Craft, in 2003; and a brother, Thomas Latislaw.
The family of Herbert A. Latislaw will gather privately for committal services. There will be no public visitation. Arrangements were made at Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Contributions in memory of Herb may be made to Polio Plus for polio eradication or to the Humane Society.
Florence Sieber
ST. JOSEPH - Florence Sieber, 94, of the Whitcomb Tower in St. Joseph passed away on May 17, 2009, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. A visitation will be held today, May 19, from 5 to 7 p.m. and also on Wednesday, one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery in St. Joseph. Memorial donations may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in honor of David Sieber, or to a charity of donor's choice.
Florence was born on Nov. 13, 1914, in Chicago, to Frank and Josephine (Miska) Hradecky. The family moved to Hartford in 1926 where she graduated from high school in 1933. The family owned the town bookstore. In 1933, she was chosen to be Miss Hartford in the Blossomtime Festival. On Oct. 12, 1940, Florence married Edward Sieber and started a married life in Fairplain almost 69 years ago. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed playing in several bridge groups.
Besides her husband, she is survived by two sons, James (Sandra) Sieber of Lake Forest, Ill., and John (Janet) Sieber of Coloma. In addition, there are six grandchildren, Bryan Sieber of Royal Oak, Mich., Dr. David Sieber and Jonathon Sieber of Chicago, Mark (Christi) Sieber of Granger, Ind., Jeffrey Sieber of Lafayette, Ind., and Tara Sieber of Breckenridge, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, Helen Jutzi, Bess Andreen and Loretta Rauner, and an infant daughter, Mary Ellen.
Florence was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family.
Charles 'Chuck' Karacson
CASSOPOLIS - Chuck's life began on April 18, 1922, in Cassopolis, the son of Anton and Helen (Sethiga) Karacson. He was united in marriage to the former Doris M. Ferguson on Oct. 27, 1946, in Dowagiac. Chuck attended Edwardsburg Schools and he served his country proudly in General Patton's 3rd Army Tank Battalion in France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Chuck was extremely patriotic and was proud of his service to country. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1855, American Legion Post 365, the Dowagiac Moose Lodge and a charter member of the Michigan Sheriff's Association.
He served as president of the Jefferson Township Board and a Jefferson Township Trustee for 12 years. He also served 13 years on the Niles Emergency EMT. Chuck retired from Miles (Bayer) Corporation in 1988 after 23 years of service.
Chuck loved to travel and visit the casinos. He was well known for his nice cars and pristine lawn. He and Doris won many dance contests. Chuck enjoyed motorcycles, snowmobiling and having a good time. He loved sunflowers and mums, raising many acres of both. Chuck was known as the "Sunflower Man" for most of his life.
His loving family includes his granddaughter, Dawn (Rex) Wyngarden of Holland; companion and good friend, Ellanore Crispen of Edwardsburg; a sister, Ellen Majeski of South Bend; and many other good friends and family.
Chuck passed away at his home on Monday, May 18, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Doris, in 2004; and his daughter, Patty Gautreaux, in 1991.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions in Chuck's name may be directed to Hospice at Home or the Cass County Library.
