Kay J. Shaw
Kay J. Shaw of Eaton Rapids, age 67, passed away in Lansing Thursday, May 7, 2009. Kay was born October 1, 1941 in Lansing, the daughter of Harold and Erma (Daft) Magoon. Kay graduated from Eaton Rapids High School in 1959 and was the Salutatorian. She was a very dedicated mother and wife. Kay spent her life caring for and giving to others. She enjoyed raising her children and was very active with her grandchildren. Kay was a member of Robbins United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. She also enjoyed reading, baking and sewing.
Kay is survived by her husband, Michael; children, Mark (Mary) Shaw of Potterville, Lori (Steven) Schnepp of Eaton Rapids, Mary Beth (Timothy) Cole of Springport, Kevin Shaw of Tampa FL; grandchildren, Megan, Austin, Kelli, Rebecca, Joshua, Isaiah, Reece, and Erica; aunt, Ila Daft. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 11, 209 at Robbins United Methodist Church, 7419 W. Bunker Rd. Eaton Rapids. Interment followed at Munger Cemetery. Visitation was held Sunday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main St. Eaton Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Lansing-Stoneleigh Residence or Robbins United Methodist Church.
Alan Gale Sheets
Alan Gale Sheets, age 63, died Thursday, September 17, 2009 at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, following complications from a rodeo accident. Mr. Sheets was born on January 11, 1946, in Charlotte to Howard and Violet Sheets.
He was a graduate of Olivet High School, class of 1964. He also attended Olivet College and Michigan State University. He was an All State Football Player in high school and played college football. While in Olivet, he farmed the family farm and raised cattle and horses. He owned a Pet Milk route and was a member of the Aton County Sheriff’s Department patrol and posse. He moved to Charleston, Arkansas, where he farmed, raised animals and drove trucks for J.B. Hunt. Currently, he resided in Tom, Oklahoma, where he farmed and raised animals. He spent a lot of time working at various rodeos.
Mr. Sheets is survived by two sons, Todd Sheets of Tom, Oklahoma, and Len Sheets of Hackett, Arkansas; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Marilee Mettes of Lansing, and Betsey (Thomas) Mulvaney of Burke, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Violet Sheets of Olivet; sister, Patricia Sheets Latham of Lansing; and brother, Ivan (Patricia) Sheets of Olivet.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lane Frost Health and Rehabilitation Center, 2815 E. Jackson St. Hugo, Oklahoma 74743. Plans for a memorial celebration of Mr. Sheets’ life are pending at this time.
Donald Shoup
Donald Paul Shoup, 72, of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009 at the Bradenton-Tidewell Hospice House in Bradenton, Fla., following an 11-year battle with cancer. He was born in Owosso on June 13, 1936, the son of Paul S.T. and Doris L. (Martin) Shoup.
He was a 1954 graduate of Vermontville High School, and was a 30-year employee of General Motors, retiring in 1990. Donald was a member of the Chapman Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Vicksburg. He was a ham radio operator, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, and watching all sports.
He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Shoup; and two sisters, Paulette Cossairt and Pauline Shoup.
He was married to Coreen Satterlee on June 4, 1955 in Charlotte. She died in 1969. Donald was married to Norma J. Frazier on July 18, 1969 in Owosso. She survives along with three sons, Bruce Shoup (Penny) of Columbia, Tenn., George Shoup (Colleen) of Eaton Rapids, and Robert Shoup (Deanna) of Charlotte; four daughters, Tami Stickles (George) of Bellevue, Lynette Robinson (Brian) of Birch Run, Paula Meaton (Jeffrey) of Mulliken, and Donna Coppess (Doug Morse) of Battle Creek; 20 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his mother, Doris Shoup of Leonidas; two sisters, Shirley Sturgeon (John) of Vicksburg, Joyce Noble (Harold) of DeWitt; one brother, John Shoup (Diane) of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday Feb. 6, 2009 at the Chapman Memorial Church of the Nazarene in Vicksburg with Rev. Dave Downs officiating. Burial was in Gresham Cemetery in Chester Township on Saturday, Feb. 7.
Memorials may be directed to either the Chapman Memorial Church of the Nazarene of Vicksburg, the Bradenton First Church of the Nazarene, or the Bradenton-Tidewell Hospice.

Mildred Shrontz
Mildred (Goodwin) Shrontz, 96, of Olivet, died Sunday, April 19, 2009 at Tendercare of Marshall Nursing Home. Mrs. Shrontz was born Dec. 5, 1912 in Olivet, the daughter of Orvil and Bernice (Weeks) Goodwin and had been a lifelong Olivet area resident.
She was a graduate of Olivet High School and attended Wright’s Business College in Battle Creek graduating with a degree in accounting.
She retired from Olivet College in 1975 after 31 years of service as a housekeeper at Dole Hall. She was a member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church and its United Methodist Women, was a member of the Marshall Moose Lodge and was a member and former treasurer of the Olivet AARP group.
With her late husband, Dale, had been an avid supporter of Olivet High school athletics and enjoyed playing Bingo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 74 years, Dale Shrontz and her grandson, Lonnie Ripley.
Surviving are her daughter, Joyce Ott of Charlotte; son, Duane “Pete” (Joyce) Shrontz of Marshall; one granddaughter, Lorie Horn; two grandsons, Doug (Beth) Ripley and Neil (Lorie) Ott; seven great grandchildren, Bryan, Chelsea, Hanannah, Colleen, Matthew, Audrey and Olivia; four step-grandchildren and numerous step-great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Diane Stone officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Lee Center United Methodist Church, Olivet or to In-House Hospice Solutions of Kalamazoo. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
Sherrie Silvas
Sherrie Silvas, 64, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009. Mrs. Silvas was born April 24, 1945 in Battle Creek, Mich., the daughter of Leslie and Alice (Weeks) Randall.
Mrs. Silvas had worked at Owens Illinois, was a realtor for ERA and had been employed at Fashion Bug.
She worked with Tourette Syndrome to educate others on the syndrome and also helped develop the Charlotte Freestyle Wrestling Club. Mrs. Silvas loved crafts and collecting porcelain Bradford Dolls. She was always a selfless person and left that legacy with us.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jennie Stanton.
She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Blaz; son, Pat Stanton of Lansing; daughter, Kim Glasslee of Bellevue; son, Mike (Karyn) Silvas of Eaton Rapids; son, Paul (Crystal) Silvas of Bellevue; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Sandra Neubert of Battle Creek; brothers, Mike (Joyce) Randall of Battle Creek and Jim (Joann) Randall of Hacienda Heights, Calif.
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at the Bellevue Christian Center, Bellevue, with Paul Silvas and Pastor Danesh Manik officiating.

Nowell Sipperley
Nowell Roger Sipperley, of Lansing, passed away Thursday Feb. 12, 2009 at the age of 81. Nowell was born July 6, 1927 in Sunfield.
He was a journeyman tinsmith at Oldsmobile for 35 years.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bee; son-in-law, David W. Freeman; and brother, Wayne Sipperley.
Surviving are his four children, Brenda (Rick) White, Kathy (Rob) Nortman, Brian (Kathy) Sipperley, Stacey (Marclay) Crampton; 11 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Private family services will be held at a later date. The family is being served by the independent family owned funeral home in Sunfield, Rosier Funeral Home.
Elaine Marie Skoczylas
Elaine Marie Skoczylas died unexpectedly Thursday, October 1, 2009 at her home in DeWitt after returning from a trip with friends to S. Carolina to visit their son. Born to Daryl & Arleen Orr, she graduated from ERHS in the class of 1969, marrying Steve Skoczylas in May of 1984. Elaine worked as a hairdresser for over 30 years in the DeWitt and Lansing areas. Elaine enjoyed camping, traveling, & entertaining in their log home across from Sleepy Hollow St. Park. She will be greatly missed by her family, her many customers, Co-workers & friends. Her brother Danny preceded her in death in 2006.
She is survived by her husband Steve of DeWitt and son Benjamin of Myrtle Beach, brother Carl (Jeanne), Steve’s 2 brothers and 3 sisters, many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 5, 2009. Arrangements by Keck-Coleman of DeWitt.
Bruce Smith
Bruce L. Smith, 72, of Marshall, died at his home in Marshall Township in the loving care of his wife Virgie. Bruce was born May 27, 1937 in charlotte to Wendell Atlee and Alice Gertrude (Harmon) Smith. He attended Charlotte High School and was in the class of 1954. He lived in Charlotte until 1977 when he moved to Marshall. He served with the Michigan National Guard’s Battery C 119th FA Battalion that was based in Charlotte. Bruce was married to Virgilia Aberilla “Virgie Cuevas on May 22, 1976 in Chicago. He worked at Diamond Reo in Marshall and Aeroquip Corporation also in Marshall until going to work for Rockwall International in Emmett Township. He retired from there in 1999. Bruce collected antique cars and regularly attended car shows. A favorite yearly trip was to Pennsylvania for his favorite car show. He belonged to the Hemmingsen Car Club and the Packard Club. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Virgie; five sons, Leo Smith of Marshall, Gene Smith and Richard Smith, both of Charlotte, Edward Smith of Florida and Brucie Smith of Charlotte; three daughters, Vanessa Smith of Marshall, Ruth Ann Davidson of Texas and Teresa Robles of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Samantha, Jessica, Jared and Jake; two great grandsons, Douglas and Bailey; a sister, Mary “Angie” Rogers of Charlotte; a brother, Edgar Smith of Charlotte; and nieces and nephews. A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life was held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home with Rev. Stephen Naas of St. Mary Catholic Church officiating. Interment followed in Oakridge Cemetery with military honors. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to Oaklawn Hospital Emergency Department. Douglas Smith
Douglas R. Smith, 75, of Charlotte, died unexpectedly on Thursday, June 11, 2009. Doug was born March 19, 1934 in Charlotte, the son of Peter and Hazel Smith and was a lifelong Charlotte resident. He was a 1952 Graduate of Charlotte High School, had been employed as Parts Manager for Fowler’s Inc. of Charlotte and later at G.M. in Lansing from where he retired in 1992. He was a member of the Charlotte Eagles.
Surviving is: his wife of 55 years, Cheri Rae (Latchaw) Smith; three daughters, Debra (Gordon) Henney of Woodland, Cynde (Brad) Carley of Boston, Mass. and Kimberlee Smith of Long Beach, Calif.; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald Smith; and great granddaughter, Bailey Rae Fletcher.
At Doug’s request, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Memorial services were held Monday, June 15, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Charles Jenson officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Heart Association.
