Homer Phelps
Homer Phelps, Charlotte, a retired Lansing Police officer, died Oct. 10,2 009 at the age of 82.
For those who seek to celebrate Homer’s life, the family would like to invite you to his memorial Oct. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church of Charlotte.
Surviving are his three children, Diane (Larry) Ranshaw, Linda (Bill) Simpson, David (Sharon) Phelps; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lloyd Phillips
Lloyd D. Phillips, 78, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Aug. 23, 2009. Mr. Phillips was born Feb. 22, 1931 in Charlotte, the son of R.D. and Bertha (Jaquette) Phillips.
Mr. Phillips worked at General Motors for many years, retiring in 1990. He loved woodworking, camping, and Bingo.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Phillips; son, Mark Phillips; brothers, Harold, John, Rex and Leslie and sister, Ardis.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce (Bouchard); sons, Richard (Carol) Phillips of Nashville, Allen (Julie) Phillips of Vermontville, and Neal Phillips of Nashville; stepson, James Moccardine, Jr., of Akron, Ohio; stepdaughter, Michelle Balser of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren, Andrea, Allison, Allen, Alicia, Amanda, Rose, Luke, Bethany, Braidy, Christina, Chastity; and two great grandchildren, Paytenn and Avery.
There will be no services at this time.

Walter Franklin Pifer
Walter Franklin Pifer of Eaton Rapids, age 88, passed away Saturday, July 18,2 009 in Eaton Rapids. Walter was born August 5, 1920 in Clare, MI, the son of Oscar Edwin and Phoebe Ann (Blackledge) Pifer. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army in the Pacific Theatre. Walter was a member of the Michigan Harness Horseman Association, Michigan Trotting Association, and the Lansing Moose Lodge. He was the owner and trainer of Pifer Racing Stables of Standard Bred Harness Horses. Preceded in death by his son, Daniel Lee Pifer (2001); brother, Calvin; and sisters, Iva Hull and Jane Pifer.
Walter is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lillian F. of Eaton Rapids; 1 daughter, Judy (Howard) Coleberg of Sterling; 1 son, Fredrick (Minnie) Pifer of Eaton Rapids; 6 grandchildren, Christine Coleberg, Kathy (Dan) Schwab, Fred (Carolyn) Coleberg, Dan (Wendy) Pifer, Julie Pifer and Jodi Pifer; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Max (Norma) Pifer of McBain; sisters, Blanche Mapes of Evaret and Rose Kunkle of Fremont; and several nieces and nephews.

Edward Pilbeam
Edward E. Pilbeam, 82, of Charlotte, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009. Edward was born Oct. 14, 1926 in Kalamazoo, the son of J.B. and Mabel (Dacon) Pilbeam. He was a retired supervisor from Eaton County Medical Care Facility in Charlotte, Coast To Coast and Wally Hanson.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie; daughters, Debra Pilbeam of Lansing; Carol Patrick of Lake Odessa, and Sandra Zank of Charlotte; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; brother, Jay Pilbeam of Arkansas; sisters, Marilyn Midgley of Arkansas and Dorothy Cooper of California.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Carolyn Elliott.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 1 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Charlotte. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice. Interment was at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.prayfuneral.com.
Jerry Plew
Jerry Duane Plew, 75, of Hastings, Mich., died June 27, 2009. Mr. Plew was born June 3, 1934 in Warsaw, Ind., the son of Kenneth and Florence (Boggs) Plew.
Mr. Plew was a stock worker at Kellogg’s and worked as a carpenter on bridges for the State of Michigan and did small engine repair.
He is survived by his friend, Michael Browne of Charlotte.

Leonard Pohl
Leonard M. Pohl, 94, of Grand Ledge, formerly of Pewamo Westphalia, died July 31, 2009. He was born December 25, 1914 in Riley, Mich., the son of Michael and Anna Pohl.
Leonard was employed at General Motors for 43 years, 10 years in the metallurgy department, 33 years in manufacturing as general supervisor. In between this time period in WWII, he served in the 75th Infantry Division for 4 ˝ years as Chief Warrant Officer and was part of the Battle of the Bulge Conflict. After retirement from GM he volunteered at St. Gerard for over 20 years and enjoyed golf.
Leonard is predeceased by his loving wife Hanna (Myers) who had been at his side from 1943 to 2008; parent, sisters, Louise (Louis) Gross and sister, Genevieve (Clark) Brown, and brother, Francis (Wilma Gisk) Pohl.
Surviving are his adopted daughter, Margaret (Scott) Davidson of Linden, Va., only child; grandchildren, William J. Shook III, George (Rachel) Shook, Kristinana (William) Overstreet, Sarah Davidson; and eight great grandchildren. Leonard wished to express his thanks to all his aunts, uncles, and grandparents for caring for him through his juvenile/adolescent years during depression times.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 4, 2009 at St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lansing with Fr. John P. Klein presiding. Rite of Committal was in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

Sally Prahl
Sally Ruth Prahl, 67, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009 in Lansing. Sally was born Oct. 23, 1941 in Bay City, the daughter of Henry and Ada (Mulders) VanTol.
Preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters, Sally was the loving mother of six children, Jan (Larry) Tingley of Hesperia, Sheri Bignall of Maybee, Cassandra (Aaron) Rolfe, Jennifer (Larry) Edwards, and Audra Prahl, all of Eaton Rapids, and Jason (Andrea) Prahl of Brighton; nine grandchildren, Courtney and Rebecca Bignall, Erin and Lyndsy Rolfe, Rachel and Kati Edwards, Taylor Prahl-Six, and Austin and Conner Prahl; two great granddaughter, Gabrielle Rolfe and Emily Clear; two brothers, Roy (Shirley) VanTol and Earl (Pat) VanTol, both of Bay City; three sisters, Betty Dalzell, Faye Lukowski, all of Essexville, and Ann Rex of Bay City; and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of the Christian Burial was prayed Wednesday, Jan. 14 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Eaton Rapids. Arrangements are by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Sparrow Hospice in memory of Sally Prahl.
Jean Primm
Jean (Eldred) Primm passed away on Friday, June 12, 2009 after a battle with cancer at the age of 76. She was born Feb. 4, 1933 to Farin (Son) and Edna Eldred in St. Johns where she lived until she married J.T. Primm on June 6, 1951.
They had seven sons and one daughter, Bill (Vicky), David, Steve (Edith), Jeff (Karen), John (Nikki), and Deborah Jean Primm; 22 grandchildren, Jeannie Gilbert, Tom (Mavis) Primm, Roger Primm, Warren Primm, Donna Primm, Candra Morrel, Robin (Jason) Freer, Charles (Cindy) Primm, James Primm, David Primm, Jessica Primm, Brooklyn Primm, Dustin (Jessica) Primm, Alyssa Primm, Jacob Primm, Andrew Primm, Kristina (Josh) Primm, Jennifer (Ben) Fust, Amber (Kenny) Carns, Heather Primm, Megan Primm, Teresa Primm, Kristin Primm; and 20 and ˝ great grandchildren.
JT and Jean owned and operated their business in Vermontville for 30 years when their son John took over because of ill health. JT and Jean volunteered to dress up for holidays in nursing homes, hospitals, doctor offices, and parades.
Jean is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 53 years, her daughter Debbie; sister, Mary Eldred; brother, Dewayne; half brothers, Robert and Richard Smith; and one grandson, Roger Primm.
Jean leaves her sons and grandchildren, one sister, Joan (Marvin) Whitford of St. Johns and a brother, Charles (Ann) Eldred of NC; many nieces and nephews, brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws in Jonesboro, Ark.
The funeral was held Tuesday, June 16 at Daniels Funeral Home and were conducted by Bruce Primm.

Robert Proteau
Robert “Bob” Gene Proteau, 69, of Charlotte died peacefully Friday evening at his home in the loving care of his family.
He was born on October 1,1 940 in Albion, Mich. to Aloysius “Al” E. and Marjorie (Tooley) Proteau. He grew up in the Duck Lake area and was a graduate of Olivet High School. For over 30 years, Bob had worked for the Airway Manufacturing Company in Olivet, retiring in 2004 as a supervisor. Other employment included as a youth working at Decamp Grocery and Place in the Woods in the Duck Lake area. He had also worked for Finley Vending Company. On July 17, 1960, he married the former Martha Alice Powers in Albion. Bob had served as an elected Constable, patrolling and keeping the Duck Lake area safe. He had also served as the Treasurer for the Nichols Country School. Bob loved to work with wood and had made many beautiful pieces of furniture and crafts, which he shared with his family. He was a loving and caring person that enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He loved to make special cards for everyone’s birthday on the computer.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Martha; children, Luann Shepherd of Olivet, Debbie (David) Heinze of Charlotte, Alan (Laurie) Proteau of Grimes, Iowa, and Peg Proteau of Charlotte; grandchildren, Jacki Barrett, Kimi Denniston, Sara Heinze, David Heinze, Sam Proteau and Jayde Carter; great grandchildren, Josh, Lilly, Lorelei, Aidin, Sawyer; mother, Marjorie “Darge” Proteau of Albion (Duck Lake); and brothers, James Proteau of Albion (Duck Lake) and Fred Proteau of Flint.
He was preceded in death by his father, Al and sister-in-law, Barb Proteau.
A funeral service to celebrate the gift of life was held Monday, November 16, 2009 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home in Marshall with Pastor James Kendall officiating and granddaughter, Kim Denniston sharing her special memories. Interment followed in Clarence Center Cemetery.
