Delbert Payne
Delbert Woodrow Payne, 88, of Eaton Rapids, passed away Thursday Jan. 29, 2009 in Lansing. Delbert was born Feb. 1, 1920 in Traverse City, the son of Orion and Elnora (Haywood) Payne.
Delbert retired from Michigan Packaging. He was a proud veteran and POW of the U.S. Army, serving during WWII in the European Theatre. Delbert was a member of the Charlotte Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was a life member of the former Eaton Rapids V.F.W. Post 6986, and a member of the American Legion Post #15 for 59 years.
Delbert was an avid gardener and loved to “can” his harvest. He also taught himself to crochet at an early age. He was a proficient artist, creating a vast collection of doilies, tablecloths, butterflies, angels, snowflakes, etc.
Delbert is also affectionately remembered as the best molasses and peanut butter cookie-maker in the community.
Delbert is preceded in death by one grandson, Gary Becker; one great grandson, Zane Gardner; son-in-law, Larry Henderson; and sister, Elizabeth Wyatt.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Birdie (Bradley) Payne of Eaton Rapids; five daughters, Lorene Henderson of Eaton Rapids, Janice Payne of Fla.; Iris (Timothy) Morgan of Holly, Bonnie Mae (Randy) Hicks of Moorsville, IN and Glenda (James) Fry of Hillsdale; two sons, Darwin D. Payne of Florida, Marvin W. (Kate) Payne of Grand Rapids; 19 grandchildren, Lori, Lynette, Sandy, Sheila, Tony, Michael, Gary, Nancy, Bradley, Jack, Tim, Dina, Jason, Kelly, Alisha, Eva, Carrie, Lori, Sam and Josh; 24 great grandchildren, Lauren, Rocky, Ry, Thomas, Wyatt, Logan, Sierra, Lane, Ariel, Christopher, Lucas, Ashley, Daisy, Adam, Kristen, John, Timmy, Tyler, Gabriel, Liberty, Taylor, Zachary, Olivia, Hannah, Lyndsay; one sister Rosamond (Ned) Bower of Sturgis; two half-brothers, Virgil “Dutch” Payne of Ala. and Dwight (Claudia) Payne of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

Joellyn Peck
Joellyn L. (VanDyke) Peck, 64, of Charlotte, passed away Wed. June 10, 2009 in Detroit. Joellyn was born May 27, 1945 in Battle Creek, the daughter of Burton and Coralie (Loveless) VanDyke and had been a life resident of the Charlotte/Olivet area. She attended Olivet Community Schools for many years then graduated from Bellevue High School in 1963 and later graduated from Olivet College with honors. She was a past president of the American Business Woman’s Association and had been active in the Ainger 4-H Club. She had been employed as an accountant for Williams Farm Machinery of Charlotte and prior to that was a co-owner of the ambles Store and had served as assistant manager of the A & P Store in Charlotte.
Surviving are: her husband of 33 years, Douglas Peck; daughters, Jody (David) husband, Mike Mankerian of Marshall and Kerry (David) husband Steven Peck, of Charlotte; step-children, Steven (Kerry) Peck of Charlotte, Shannon (Larry) Bond of Charlotte and Tamara Roberts of Flowerybranch, Georgia; 10 grandchildren, Ariana, Megan and Michael Mankerian, Bryon and David Peck, Nicholas (Casey) and Mindy Bond, Ellyn, Kenneth and Kayden Roberts; one great grandson, Abbott Pettinger; her mother, Coralie VanDyke of Olivet; siblings, Jill (Ron) Potter of Ann Arbor, Randal (Lynette) VanDyke of Olivet and Joyce Hughes of Charlotte and former husband, Lynn David of Marshall.
She was preceded in death by her father, Burton VanDyke.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Philip Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions may go to the Eaton Community Hospice or the Eaton County Humane Society.
Roger Peck
Roger A. Peck was born in Charlotte to Waldo and Vera (Rogers) Peck on August 30, 1921. He was raised on a farm near Charlotte and attended Charlotte High School. He graduated from high school in 1939. Roger went into the Army in 1942 and received an honorable discharge in 1945. While in the Army he received two Bronze Star’s and a Silver Star pinned on him by General Patton. Roger also received an expert machine gunner award. While in the Army, Roger married Leva Cateiline of Eaton Rapids on February 12, 1944. After the Army, Roger went to work for Wilcox Gay in Charlotte. In April of 1946 Roger went to work for Oldsmobile in Lansing until his retirement in September 1976. Upon his retirement, Roger and Leva moved to Mesa, Ariz. Roger enjoyed playing golf and bowling and was on a league in both sports.
Roger is survived by his son, Kenneth of Mesa AZ; sister, Margaret (Peck) Vanliew and a brother, Douglas Peck, both from Charlotte. Roger has requested to be cremated and no services will be held at this time. Allen Funeral Home of Mesa, Ariz. is handling the arrangements. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Home in Eaton Rapids or Eaton Community Hospice House.
Gabrielle Pennell
Gabrielle R. M. Pennell, of Leslie, passed away at home under the loving care of her family and hospice on Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2009 at the age of 20.
Gabby was the University of Michigan’s #1 fan.
She made friends with many of the football players, coaching staff and many other athletes while she was in Mott’s Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Gabby was a long-time, devoted student at Heartwood School in Mason and a devoted Leslie Blackhawk fan. Her zest and love of life enriched everyone that knew her. Gabby’s strength and encouragement was an inspiration to many.
Surviving are her parents, Brian and Jamie Pennell; two brothers, Joel and Manny; two sisters, Brandy and Neicey; nephew, Tres; grandparents, Judy and Larry Leech and Gerri and Sonny Schoening; special cousin, Renee; and numerous aunts, uncles, and other family.
Funeral services were held at the Leslie First Baptist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2009 with Pastor Toby Teague officiating. Cremation followed.

James Pentecost
James L. Pentecost, 62, of Hastings, formerly of Charlotte; died Sunday, July 19, 2009 t Borgess Hospital, Kalamazoo after a 10-year courageous battle with Leukemia. Jim was born Jan. 5, 1947 in Charlotte, the son of John and Betty (Goosey) Pentecost and had been a Hastings resident for 20 years moving there from Charlotte. He was a 1965 graduate of Charlotte High School and had attended Jackson Community College. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and was a member of the V.F.W. He was most recently the owner/operator of the Thornapple Lake Trading Post for 20 years where he enjoyed working alongside of his niece, Debbie Geiger. While in Charlotte, he had served as a Charlotte City Police Officer for many years.
Surviving are: his beloved partner in life, Jeanne Ayres; two children, Becky (Scott) Herder of Kalamazoo and Michelle (Caley) Edgerly of New Concord, Ohio; five granddaughters, Samantha Richardson, Erika, Rosie and Claire Edgerly and Ally Herder; his mother, Betty Pentecost of Charlotte; five siblings, Gary (Dori) Pentecost of Toledo, Ohio, Linda Tokar of Charlotte, Sharon (Michael) Smith of Lapeer, Terry (Holly) Pentecost of Charlotte and Cindy (Joe) Leimback of Charlotte; several nieces and nephews and his loyal dog, Annie.
He was preceded in death by his father, John C. Pentecost.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte with Rev. Arthur Salisbury officiating. Interment with Military Honors was in the Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Mich.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the ASPCA or the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society.
James Perry
James Carl Perry, 90, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009 at his residence after an extended illness. James was born April 20, 1919 in Charlotte, the son of Carl and Ethel (Pohlard).
Perry was a life resident of Charlotte. He had been employed as a heavy equipment operator, was a member of the Operating Engineers and had also been employed as an Eaton County animal Control Officer. He was a charter member of the Charlotte Eagles Aerie No. 3552.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther L. (Root) Perry on June 18, 2007 and by a son, James David Perry.
Surviving are children, Robert (Patricia) Perry of Vermontville, Dianne Matson of Hastings, Susan (Rick) VanLandingham of Middlebury, Ind., Mark Perry of Coldwater, John (Carla) Perry of Quincy, Richard (Elyse) Fogle of Holt, Vickie (Robert) Stojisavljevich of Crown Pont, Ind., Randall (Susan) Fogle of Charlotte and Kelley Dane of Charlotte; daughter-in-law, Rosetta Perry of Florida; 212 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at noon, Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010 at the Charlotte Eagles Aerie No. 3552, 116 Lansing St. in Charlotte with Rev. Charles Jenson officiating.
Memorial contributions may go to the Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital in Charlotte. Arrangements by Burkhead-Green Funeral Home.
Iva Jean Peters
Iva Jean Peters of Eaton Rapids, age 76, passed away peacefully at her home, September 3, 2009. She was born in Eaton Rapids July 8, 1933, the daughter of Eugene and Eula (Elston) Byron. Iva was a homemaker and she enjoyed cooking and flower gardening. Her most enjoyable moments were spending time with her grandchildren.
Iva is survived by her sons, Delmer (Shannon) Peters of Olivet, Gene (Jennifer) Peters of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren, Brittany, Dyland, Emily and Wyatt; great grandson, Remington; brother, James (Joyce) Byron of Eaton Rapids; sister, Lorena (Robert) Gillett of Eaton Rapids; brother-in-law, Glen Love of Eaton Rapids. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Wally; brothers Alfred, Ray, Allen, Duane Byron; sisters, Viola Blanchard, Alberta VanAtter, Rose Love.
Graveside services were held at Tompkins Cemetery, Tompkins Center, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 3100 West Rd. Bldg B, Ste 110 East Lansing, MI 48823. Mary Pettit
Mary Eva Pettit (Gray), 62, of Muskegon, formerly of Charlotte, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday morning, Feb. 26, 2009 after a long battle with scleroderma. She was born Jan. 14, 1947 in Flint, Mich., to Rev. Bernard and Doris (Cain) Churchill.
Mrs. Pettit resided in the Eaton Rapids area while raising her family and had moved to Muskegon two years ago. She worked for Hayes Green beach Hospital in Charlotte for several years.
She was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Lillian Loveall; her parents; and a brother, Clarence “Butch” Churchill.
Surviving are four children, D. Wayne Gray of DeWitt, Shane (Jessica) Gray of Union City, Mich., Shannah (David) Shaver of Nashville, Kris (Bill) McVicker of Portland, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; one brother, B. Michael; (Tina) Churchill of San Antonio, Texas; sister, Georgia Churchill of Muskegon; and her former husband and father of her children, Orville Gray.
A memorial service has taken place.

Helen Pfiester
Helen Pfiester, 91, of Grand Ledge, formerly of Bellevue, died March 9, 2009 at Ingham Regional Medical Center in Lansing. She was born June 17, 1917, the daughter of Orrin and Bessie (Chapman) Kelsey in Osceola County.
Helen married Charles Pfiester in 1940 and he died in 1976. She is survived by sons, Richard Pfiester of Grand Ledge, Jon (Nellie) Pfiester of Bellevue, Timothy (Lynn) F=Pfiester of Delton; daughter, Kathleen (Alfred) Dexter of Bellevue; four grandchildren, three great grandchildren; brothers, Raymond Kelsey of Hopkins and Lewis Kelsey of Plainwell.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Peg Closs and brothers, Donald, George, Carl and James Kelsey.
Helen was a member of the Farm Bureau and a Gray Lady for many years at Hayes Green beach Hospital.
Graveside services took place on Friday, March 13, 2009 at Munger Cemetery in Eaton Rapids with Rev. Molly Turner officiating. Memorials may go to the American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue.
