Ollen McLane
Ollen L. McLane, 76, of Zephyrhills, Fla., died Nov. 23, 2009. Mr. McLane was born Aug 31, 1933, in Wolf Lake Ill., the son of Ralph A. and Myrtle T. (Patrick) McLane.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Connie, who passed away Aug. 30, 2009; twin sons, Randy and Sandy, in April 1955; brother, Ralph (Betty) McLane, and sister, Betty (Merlin) Root of Charlotte.
He is survived by children, Chris (Debbie) of Zephyrhills, Fla., Cindy (Steve) Butler of Olivet, Kim (Susie) of Clearwater, Fla., Kirt (Shirley) of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Scott (Jana) of New Port Richey, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and by his sisters, Lela Lake of Charlotte, Ellen Green of Hudson, Fla., Evelyn VanDeMoortel of Ocala, Fla., Thelma (Jim) Mayhew of Charlotte, and Jewell (Bill) Converse of Ocala, Fla.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009, at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Pastor Todd McLane officiating. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte.
Harold McNamara
Harold Paul (Mac) McNamara, of Sunfield, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born April 30, 1932 in Manistique, Mich., the son of Harold J. and Lillian (Cowman) McNamara.
On Oct. 22, 1960, Harold married Janice Claire Ruth at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dearborn, Mich. Mac graduated from Manistique High School in 1950. He was a deck hand on the freighter “Diamond Alkali”. He served in the Marine Corp. during the Korean War 1951 through 1953. Harold graduated from Recruit School and entered the Michigan State Police in 1954 and was assigned to the Jonesville, Marquette, St. Ignace, Romeo, and Flat Rock Posts. He was assigned to the St. Ignace Post during the time of the building of the Mackinac Bridge. After six years with the MSP, he transferred to the Michigan Department of State and retired in 1985. Mac loved the farm, his boat and his hunting camp, but most of all, he loved his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, a sister, Betty J. Newman; two brother-in-laws, Philip Lowry, and William F. Ruh.
Surviving are his loving wife, Janice; three children, Margaret (Joseph) Dolezal of Monroe, Mich., Peter (Andreia) of West Branch, Mich., and Jean (James) Carow of St. Joseph, Mich.; and nine grandchildren who call him “Papa”, two sisters, Carol (Dr. Armand) LaSorsa of Kentwood, Mich., and Joan Lowry of Mesa, Ariz.
A funeral mass was celebrated Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009 at St. Edward Catholic Church, Lake Odessa.

Howard “HP” Mead
Howard “HP” Mead of Springport, age 82, passed away in Spring Arbor, August 26, 2009. He was born in Oakwood, Ohio, September 6, 1926, the son of Wallace and Annie (Stouffer) Mead.
Howard was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a partner in Mead Brothers Excavating Co. Howard belonged to the VFW Post 6056 in Springport. He enjoyed wood working, cabinet making, High School sports, hunting and fishing.
Howard is survived by his daughter, Connie Frayer of Tecumseh, MI; son, Doug (Kay) Mead of Marshall; step-children, Jim (Roma) Wood of Troy, Jan (Jim) Boehlke of Albion, Jerry (Brenda) Wood of Springport, Steven Rowley of Springport, Richard (Cecelia) Rowley of Ft. Kent, ME; brothers, Harold (Irene) Mead, Edward (Janette) Mead of Albion, Walter (Phyllis) Mead of Onondaga; sisters, Madge (Robert) Cowles of Albion, Janet (Jim) Webb of Springport, Della (Richard) Mergener of Eaton Rapids; sister’s-in-law, Ada Mead of Jackson, June Mead of Springport; former wife, Doris Kelley of Tecumseh; 14 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Rosamond (Raymond) Mead and Dolas (Malosh) Mead; son, David Mead; sister Marie Mead; brothers, Ralph Mead, Herbert Mead, Dean Mead.

Albert H. Meinke Jr. M.D.
Albert H. Meinke Jr., M.D., Kewadin, formerly of Eaton Rapids died March 18, 2009 in Traverse City, MI at the age of 89. He was born on September 26, 1919 to Albert Henry and Elsie (Keydel) Meinke in Detroit, MI. He graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and earned an A.B. degree from Albion College. He entered the University of Michigan Medical School in 1941, where the program was accelerated due to WWII. He received his M.D. degree in 1943, and then served a 9 month internship at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, MI. He married Edmere Lucille Bondesen of Detroit on July 29, 1944, shortly before entering the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, and commanded the Medical Detachment of the 3rd Battalion of the 86th Mountain Infantry Regiment. He served in Italy from December 1944 to August 1945, during which time he received a Bronze Star, Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Combat Medical Badge. Upon his discharge from the Army in 1946, Dr. & Mrs. Meinke moved to Eaton Rapids, MI, where they raised their four children and for 38 years maintained a medical practice, with particular emphasis on general surgery, emergency medicine and obstetrics. He and his colleagues in the community formed one of the first group medical practices in Michigan in 1948. He was very involved with the building of the Eaton Rapids community Hospital, which opened in 1957 and continues today as the Eaton Rapids Medical Center. He was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Eaton County Medical Society, and the Eaton Rapids Kiwanis, and served on the Eaton Rapids Board of Education for 12 years, eight of them as president. Dr. Meinke retired in 1984, and they moved to the west shore of Torch Lake in Antrim County, MI, to a home that he designed and helped build. He wrote and published two books; Mountain Troops and Medics (1993), recounting his experiences with the 10th Mountain Division in WWII, and Hospital History and Medical Practice in My Small Town, (2003), a collection of stores from his years in Eaton Rapids. While in retirement, Dr. Meinke maintained his medical license by participating in continuing education programs at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He also served on the Elk Rapids Board of Education. He always loved the outdoors beginning with his childhood summers in Petoskey, MI. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with friends and in later years gardening, stock marketing and genealogy. Dr. Meinke was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son, Albert H. Meinke III.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Edmere (Bondesen) Meinke; two sons, William Meinke, M.D., of Johnston, RI and James Meinke of Kewadin, MI; one daughter, Joanna (David) Ballard of Onondaga, MI; daughter-in-law, Connie Meinke of Kewadin, MI; eight grandchildren, Samantha Meinke of Eaton Rapids, MI, Abby Meinke of Sydney, Australia, Patrick Meinke of Eaton Rapids, MI, Eric (Sue) Meinke of Kalamazoo, MI, Alan Meinke of Royal Oak, MI, Laura (Glenn) Steffens of Ypsilanti, MI, Jeff Ballard of Onondaga, MI, and Meri Ballard of Onondaga, MI; one great grandson, Evan Palmer of Onondaga, MI; two brothers, Richard K. (Joan) Meinke, M.D. of Mason, MI, and Paul H. (Suzanne) Meinke of Rogers City, MI; one sister, Ruth Milliken of Green Valley, AZ; brother-in-law, Ralph Patterson of Walled Lake, MI and a large extended family who knew him fondly as “Uncle Albert”.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 p.m. at the Eaton Rapids First United Methodist Church, 600 S. Main St., Eaton Rapids, MI. The family will greet family and friends from 12:00 noon until the time of service. Erma Merritt
Erma C. Merritt, 89, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. She was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Mulliken, the daughter of Sylveen and Ola (O’Neil) Parker.
She was a homemaker and loved to travel to Florida in the winter and playing cards. Mrs. Merritt also enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her free time, she likes to visit her many friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Angela Cousins in 2001; grandson, Derrick Reagle in 2006; sisters, Pauline Smart in 1999 and companion, Laverne Smith in 2008.
She is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Peter) Reagle of Homer, Mich.; son, Stephen (Holly) Macaluso of Woodbridge, Va.; seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home with Rev. Ronni DiGiovanni and Rev. Father Francis Mossholder officiating. Interment was in Mulliken Cemetery, Mulliken. Online condolences may be made at www.prayfuneral.com.
Neva Mikesell
Neva E. Mikesell, 75, of Charlotte, devoted and loving mother and grandmother, passed away in her home Wednesday, April 9, 2009, following a courageous battle against cancer. She was born in Union County, Ind., Dec. 16, 1933, the daughter of Christopher and Mary Beard.
She moved to Indian River with her family in 1948 and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1951. Following graduation, she went to work for the State of Michigan. In 1953, she started to work for the House of Representatives, and worked for Congressman Knox in Washington D.C. in 1956. In 1962, she became the first female journal clerk in the House of Representatives. In 1967, she attained her private pilot’s license. She retired from the staff of the Clerk of the House of Representatives in 1995.
Neva was a member of the First Congregational Church, a life member of the VFW Aux. 2406 (past president), a member of the American Legion Aux. 42, an Eaton County Shriner’s Club Lady, a member of GFWC, and a volunteer worker for Hayes-Green-Beach Hospital. She loved to travel and had many travel adventures with her husband, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 45 years, Willard L. Mikesell. Neva had two brothers; the oldest died when she was three; the other was killed in WWII when she was 12.
She leaves behind her three children, Ann Mikesell Ringrose (Tom Eckel) Terri Morton (Brad), and Jim Mikesell; two stepchildren, Kathy Vigue (Jeff), and Tom Mikesell; 13 grandchildren, Nicole, Michelle, and Kevin Ringrose; Renae, Shawna and Kay Morton; Samantha and Christopher Mikesell; Glenn and Barbara Vigue; Mary Jane Mikesell; and Amber and Brianna Eckel.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 13, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Rev. Philip Hobson officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Donald Miller
Donald Lewis Miller, 76, died on Saturday, Dec. 5 at his home in Smyrna, Tenn., after an eight-year battle with cancer. Donald was a lifelong resident of Charlotte and Lansing. Donald was a long-standing student of Way International Bible Research and Teaching Ministry. Don retired in 1994, from the Owens-Brockway plant in Charlotte, where he was employed for 30 years. He served in the Michigan Army National Guard, 119th Field Artillery, for over 10 years. Donald, a beloved son of God, was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Miller; mother, Dorothy Miller Bowen; two brothers, Robert Miller and Richard Miller and beloved nephews, Jeffrey Gardner and timothy Logan. Mr. Miller is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eileen; six daughters, Margaret Sanchez, Cynthia Thomason and Roberta Miller of Lansing, Katherine (Terry) Sizeland of Olivet, Dawn (Doyle) Dunning of Nashville, Tenn., and Lori (David) Sjoquist of Smyrna, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Mrs. Richard (SonaLu) Miller of Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. and Mrs. James (Patricia) Helmker of Lakeview, Mich., and Mr. William Logan of Six Lakes, Mich. Mr. Miller, will be honored at a memorial service in spring, 2010, at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte.
Joyce Miller
Joyce J. Miller, 76, of Charlotte, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009 at her residence under the care of McLaren Visiting Nurse Hospice and with her family by her bedside. She was born Sept. 1, 1932 in Charlotte, the daughter of R.C. and Helen (Crandell) Ackley.
Joyce was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed traveling, auctions, going to the casinos and bird watching.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald in 1998; granddaughter, Michelle Harris; two brothers, Carson and Melvin Ackley; and sister, Dorothy Spring.
Surviving are five children, Darcey (Denise) Miller of Springport, Steven (Ruth) Miller of Lombard, Ill., Patti (John) Ostrowski of Olivet, Jill (Ben) Vincent of Charlotte and Brenda (Greg) Bradford of Charlotte; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the Bosworth Cemetery in Olivet.

Leroy Miller
Leroy D. Miller, 84, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009 at Sparrow Hospital, Lansing. Leroy was born Nov. 3, 1924 in Lansing, the son of Glenn and Marybelle (Balmer) Miller and had lived most of his life in the Charlotte area.
He served in the U.S. Army during WWII as a surgical technician in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for 19 months with the 132nd Infantry, 99th Evacuation Hospital and Headquarters 8th Army. Decorations and citations earned included: the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon W/1 Bronze Battle Star, Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon W/1 Bronze Battle Star, three Overseas Service Bars, Army of Occupation Medal Japan and the Good Conduct Medal. He had been employed at the former Recordio Corp. and World Magnetics Companies and the Charlotte School System from where he retired.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Betty Miller and brother, Alfred Miller.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Marcia (Fairier) Miller; son, Terry (Jorene) Miller of Longview, Texas; daughter, Diana Bosworth of Charlotte; son, Robin Miller of Fla.; six grandchildren, and sister, Harriet Miller of Charlotte.
Cremation has taken place. At Mr. Miller’s request, there will be no visitation. Private family services will be held.
