Roger Love

Roger Alan Love, Sr., 67 of Bellevue, passed away Sunday, Aug. 30, 2009 at the Heartland of Battle Creek. He was born Jan. 3, 1942 in Battle Creek to Wilbur and Lucille (Pierce) Love.

The oldest of five children, Roger learned at a very early age about a good work ethic, responsibility, honesty, integrity and obligation to help others – the family on the farm, the neighbors, or anyone on the street. His love of anything “farming” was a passion he carried all of his life. This passion held him in good stead when his father died at an early age. Roger worked on the family farm with his granddad, Scott Love, and his two uncles, Jack and Willard Love and the local area farmers and neighbors on their farms. Everyone had a hand in shaping Roger into the man he became.

Roger was a very hard worker with a mechanical aptitude that was uncanny. He could listen to a machine or a vehicle and tell you what was wrong with it and where; or hear a vehicle coming down the road and tell you the make, model and size of the motor as it approached. And he was right nine times out of 10. But, he also had a zest for life. He loved all children. It did not matter who the child was or where form. If he could make a child smile or laugh by feeding them, playing on the floor with them, or hopscotch or tossing a ball with them; he would do it. It brought great joy to him to see a child happy, nothing else mattered.

Roger’s work ethic was taught to him by his father. “Idle hands are always in trouble – busy hands are never in trouble”. He had a very long and varied work history. Besides the family and neighbor farming operations; his early work experiences included back-yard mechanic on the older vehicles and tractors, pumping has, Cheney Limestone Company and Aluminum Extrusions.

Then began his “short-term” career with Eaton corporation in Marshall. He retired with 36 ½ years of service and won a few safety and patent awards during his tenure. But, he still had some idle time on his hands. So, during his fulltime commitment to Eaton’s, he also held other full-time bus driver for Bellevue Community Schools, US Postal Service driving truck for pickup and delivery, the American Door Company, Sawmill Pallet Company, Phil Smith Excavating Company, D&M Excavating, Horness Contractor, East Towne Tavern and driving semi-truck with his brother-in-law on weekends.

Even though Roger was a reserved, behind-the-scene kind of guy; he was a straight-shooter kind of person. His honesty and integrity was second-to-none. He minced no words about it. You knew right away if he liked you and you also knew right away if he didn’t like you. He had a strong sense of right and wrong and upheld himself to the highest of standards. He did not believe in cheating others; “A fair day’s work for a fair day’s wages” and he did not take kindly to others cheating him. Even if you disliked him, you still had to respect him.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Scott and Henrietta Love; his parents, Wilbur and Lucille Love; his son, R. Alan Love, Jr., and his grandson, Bryce Balfour.

Roger is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Marie (Hayes) Love of Bellevue; his children, Chris Willis of Virginia, son-in-law, Mark Willis of Battle Creek, DeAnna (Danny) Wallace of Battle Creek, Kayelyn (Joe) Grigoli of New York, Raelyn (Jarrett) Balfour of Virginia, son-in-law, Melvin Beard of Alabama; grandchildren, Geoff, Greg, Lorin, Nathan, Michael, Aliana, Agelina, Christopher, Braiden, Isabella, and a new one on the way; sisters, Ione and Lois Love, Iris (John) Huggett and Beth Thornton, all of Bellevue; several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, a great number of cousins, and a special, lifelong, boyhood friend, Bruce Brown.

Private family graveside services have taken place at Riverside Cemetery in Bellevue.

To celebrate and honor Roger’s life and his loves, the family is setting up the Love Family Memorial Scholarship Fund relating to the agricultural field whether it’s crops, livestock and animal husbandry, equipment or veterinarians. Memorial contributions may be made to the Love Family Memorial Scholarship Fund at Battle Creek Community Foundation, or any charity of your choice involving children. Roger believed in all children and trying to give them a helping hand for a good start in life because they are our future.
