Katherine Hill

Katherine Louise Hill, 70, of Eagle, formerly of Potterville, died Monday, August 31, 209. She was a waitress at Archie Tarpoffs and a demonstrator at Sam’s Club. Funeral services were held Thursday, Sept. 3, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home in Charlotte.

Dorothy Louise Hilliard

Dorothy Louise Hilliard of Eaton Rapids, age 90, passed away Monday, March 16, 2009 in Lansing. Dorothy was born February 14, 1919 in McGuffey, Ohio the daughter of Grover Cleveland and Ruth (Wentz) Spurlock. She was a retired inspector for General Motors. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Hilliard; her son’s in-law, Neil Jones and Larry Gooch; three brothers; and one sister.

Dorothy is survived by her two daughters, Patricia Jones of Lansing, Ruth Gooch of Eaton Rapids; one son, George Richard (Sharla) Hilliard of Onondaga; grandchildren, Gregg (Lois) Gooch of Highland, Mindy Jones of Lansing, Kimberly (Brian) Willcutt of Onondaga, Joy (Steve) Ketchum of Eaton Rapids, Perry (Ann) Gooch of Grand Rapids, James (Teena Craft) Hilliard of Rives Junction; 6 great grandchildren, Joshua, Grant, Carter, Griffin, Grace, and Grady; sister-in-law, Thelma Hilliard; dear friends, Dean & Leigh Ann Shippey, Taylor and Brooke; and several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services were held Friday March 20, 2009 at the First Baptist Church of Eaton Rapids. Interment will follow at Rosehill Cemetery. Arrangements were by the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, Eaton Rapids. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, Eaton Rapids. www.shellyodell.com.

Paxton Hoggard

Paxton “Pac-Man” Hoggard, 30, of Potterville, went to join his “Daughter Quatro”, Tabitha Stanton, in Heaven on Sept. 23, 2009. “Packer” was born Oct. 3, 1978 in Milwaukee, Wis., the son of Larry Hoggard of Lansing and Paula (Breininger) and Joe Mockbridge of Grand Ledge.

“Pac-Man” was a wonderful dad, valuing his family most of all. He coached everything his kids participated in (a lengthy list of teams) and shared his passion and sportsmanship with the teams. He loved to camp with his family, hunt, fish and golf, even though he wasn’t great at golfing.

He dealt with his illness very bravely without complaints. He was employed at Spartan Motors and had a side business, “Paxton’s Pro-Sound”, that allowed him to be the life of the party at events for which he JD’d.

He was preceded in death by grandparents, Florence Breininger Beam, Peyton “Bud” Beam, Garner O. Hoggard, and Velma Hoggard.

He is survived by his wife, Toby (Kellogg); their four children, Derek, Makenna, Parker, and Karsyn; his parents; his wife’s parents, Bob (Tina Kellogg of Charlotte, and Sue Kellogg (Terry Geiger) of Lansing; Papa Kevin Foran; brother, Zach Hoggard (Mallory VanEpps); brothers-in-law, Lucas Kellogg, Todd (Natalie) Kellogg, Jon Cribb; the “Hogtons”, Todd, Kate, Samantha, Zane and the late Tabi Stanton who called Paxton and Toby, “Mama and Papa dos”; and his loving caregiver, Brenda “Aunt B” Davis.

Funeral services were at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 29, 209 at First Baptist Church in Charlotte with Reverend Robin Crouch officiating. Interment was at Benton Township cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, September 28,2009 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Pray Funeral Home. Vena Holcomb

Vena Jane Holcomb, widow of the late Harvey Holcomb, passed away peacefully at home in Sparks, Nevada on June 3, 2009, a week after celebrating her 96th birthday.

Born to Bernice Knowles and wells Stone, she was the oldest daughter in a family of seven children.

A granddaughter of Claude Knowles, former mayor Charlotte, Vena Jane was the first secretary of the Eaton County Michigan Department of Health, organized by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

A graduate of Jackson Business College, Michigan state University, Eastern Michigan University, she worked as a speech therapist for the Charlotte Public Schools and retired in 1976. Vena Jane was a member of the First Congregational Church in Charlotte as well as a lifelong PEO member.

Upon the death of her husband, Harvey Holcomb, Vena Jane moved to Sun City, Ariz., to be near her brother and his wife, Richard and Nancy Stone.

In recent years, she relocated to the Reno/Sparks area to be near her only son, Paul Hauser and his wife, Susan.

She leaves behind her son and a stepson, Harold Holcomb of Grand Rapids; four wonderful grandchildren and two step grandchildren.

Interment is in Maple Hill Cemetery in Charlotte. At her request there will be no services.

Donations in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church, Charlotte.

Robert C. “Bob” Hollister

Robert C. “Bob” Hollister, 56, of Battle Creek died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2009 at his home in the loving care of his wife.

Mr. Hollister was born on Aug. 1, 1953 in Battle Creek to Orville and June (Thompson) Hollister. He was a lifelong resident of this area and was a graduate of Olivet High School, class of 1971. He had been employed by the Denso Corporation in Battle Creek. Prior employment included working as a locksmith in the Eaton and Ingham Counties and driving truck for the CCR and Sellco Trucking Companies.

On July 8, 1972, he married the former Deborah Kay Earl at the Convis Union Methodist Church.

Bob enjoyed searching for and finding all kinds of “treasures”. He enjoyed attending auctions of all kinds and especially enjoyed the Hillsdale auction. He often found many collectibles and then would sell them on eBay. His friends called them Shed Treasures, a name that he used as his e-mail address. He was a member of a metal detectors club and a bird carving club. He also enjoyed playing pool in several Battle Creek leagues.

Bob loved his family. His nieces and nephews held a special place in his heart. He enjoyed getting down on the floor and playing with the young children. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. A special memory of Bob’s was the hunting trip he shared with his brother, Chuck, as they hunted turkeys together.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; sisters, Judy (Gary) Jenkins, of Bellevue and Paulette (Delbert) Fancher of Charlotte; brothers, Orville “Sonny” (Ellen) Hollister of Texas and Charles “Chuck” Hollister of Battle Creek; numerous nieces and nephews; and a best friend, Harold Andrews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service to celebrate the gift of his life was held Sept. 21, 2009 at the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Marshall, with Reverend James Codde officiating. Interment followed in Floral Lawn Cemetery, Battle Creek.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Paul Holmes

Paul L. Holmes, 84, of Charlotte, NC, formerly of Bellevue and Charlotte, Mich., died Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at the Lakewood Care Center in Denver, NC. Paul was born Nov. 28, 1924 in Eaton Rapids.

He was a graduate of Charlotte High School, served in the U.S. Army Cavalry near the end of WWII, and was active in Boy Scouts as a Scout leader for many years in the Bellevue and Olivet area.

He was a self employed logger for many years, had been employed by the Eaton County Road Commission and was a diesel mechanic working on truck repair in the Charlotte, NC area before retiring.

He had been a resident of the Charlotte, NC area since 1986.

he was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred (Wise) Holmes in 1993; son, John Holmes in 1983; daughter, Marcia Schardin in 2005; step-sister, Hattie Cole in 1996 and son-in-law, Wesley Woodbury in 2007.

Surviving are one daughter, Linda Woodbury of Crouse, NC; four grandchildren, Nora (Bill) Woodbury-Dean, Ronald (Shirley) Daniels, Billy (Miranda) Woodbury and Paula (Jeff) Carver; 13 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Mark Woodbury officiating. Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet. Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice organization of one’s choice.

Richard Hood

Richard A. Hood, Sr., of Charlotte, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009. He was born Nov. 27, 1946 in Cadillac, Mich., the son of Harley and Eilene (Gilbert) Hood.

Mr. Hood worked for Leaseway hauling cars for GM. He served in the Army in the Vietnam War. He enjoyed bowling, fishing and golfing.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Tammy Lynn and Michele April; brother, Skip and step-mother, Gerry.

He is survived by his sons, Richard and Raymond Hood; daughters, Stacy (Ian) Crabb, Karen (Gary) Steede; grandchildren, Katie, Brittany, Kristen, Megan and Michael; brothers, Robert (Treva), Thomas (Marie) and Stephen, Gilbert (Lisa) and Charles; sisters, Anna Marie, Carol (Lowell) and sister-in-law, Lettie.

Funeral services were held Monday, Feb. 16, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend George Rhye officiating. Interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich., at a later date.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek.

Gerald H. Hopcraft

Gerald H. Hopcraft of Springport, MI, age 62, passed away December 4, 2009 at his home in Springport surrounded by his loving family. Gerald was born December 20, 1946 in Albion, MI to the late J.C. and Gertrude M. (Osmun) Hopcraft. He married Carolyn Yvonne Love on July 13, 1974. Gerald was employed by TCI of Michigan and was a self employed truck driver for many years. He loved to farm and was a former employee for Vern Losey. Gerald was a collector of toy tractors. He enjoyed family gatherings and picnics with friends.

Gerald is survived by his wife of 35 years Carolyn Yvonne (Love) Hopcraft; three daughters, Dawn (Budel) Witt of Lake City, FL, Gerri Hopcraft of Springport, MI, Joni (Derrick) Sunkle of Springport, MI; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters, Sharlene Hopcraft of Springport, MI and Mary Ellen (Frank) Andrews of Springport, MI; 2 aunts, Minnie Nichols of Jackson, MI and Ruth Cockroft of Springport, MI; several nieces and nephews. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Charles Hopcraft.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Shelly-Odell Funeral Home, 518 S. Main, Eaton Rapids, MI with Pastors Merlin Pratt and Will Taylor officiating. Interment will be at Springport Cemetery, Springport, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice or the American Cancer Society. www.shellyodell.com.

Leon Hoppes

Leon Hoppes of Eaton Rapids, MI, passed away on Tuesday, November 10, 2009 at the age of 81. He was born on April 21, 1928 in Portland, MI the son of Bernard and Pauline (Lehman) Hoppes. He was employed for the past 19 years by Gardner Management Co. and loved his job as a maintenance supervisor. Throughout his life, Leon loved farming, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a hard worker and proud of his beautiful vegetable and flower gardens. Leon was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Michael Leon and Christopher Lee Hoppes; brothers, Norman and Stanley and sisters, Reva and Marian.

He is survived by and will be missed by his daughters, Lynn and son-in-law Tim Smith of Grand Ledge, Peggy and son-in-law Michael English of Charlotte; grandchildren, Brent (Diane) Smith of Portland, Ryan (Audre Robison) of East Lansing, Stacie (Paul Godin) of Granger, Indiana, Shane Marsh of Eaton Rapids, Elijah English of Potterville, Nicole (Josh Brzycki) of Charlotte, Krista (Dean) Stauffer of Portland; great grandchildren, Ethan, Trevor and Peyton Smith and Braydon and Elleanna Stauffer; sisters, Ruth Keusch of Portland, Eleanor Lynch of Lansing, Marilyn Muirhead of San Antonio, Texas; brother, Bud Hoppes of Portland. He is also survived by many friends and neighbors who will miss his friendship, humor and his willingness to help others.

Private services for the immediate family were held at the Holihan-Atkin Funeral Home in Grand Ledge.
