Shirley Hayter

Shirley Lucile (Parr) Hayter, 81, of Charlotte, passed away at home on Dec. 11, 2009. Shirley was born July 28, 1928 in Charlotte, the daughter of Dorr and Addie (Root) Parr. She was a graduate of Olivet High School. Shirley loved family and friends. Among her many pleasures were dancing, gardening, cooking, bird watching, golfing, reading , crosswords, jumble and sharing a good laugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Cecil H. Hayter and her son-in-law, Douglas Roth. She is survived by four daughters, Judy Roth of West Union, SC, Jean (Greg) Reber of Duluth, Ga., Janet Hayter (David Ulrey) of Charlotte and Nancy (Greg) Hummel of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, one great grandchild and one on the way; two sisters, Valdean Jaquette and Linda Brown (Dick) both of Charlotte; a brother, Jerry Parr (Eileen) of Jackson and many cousins, nephews, nieces, extended family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Dec. 19 at noon at Burkhead-Green Funeral Home in Charlotte. Visitation will precede the service at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Eaton Community Hospice in memory of Shirley.

John M. Hebert

John M. Hebert passed away in Lansing. Born in Detroit, MI on November 10, 1923, and grew up in Davison, MI. John served as a U.S. Air Force Lieutenant in WWII. He flew B-17’s and B-29’s from 1943 to 1947. Graduated in 1952, from Ferris State University receiving his Bachelors of Science degree in Pharmacy. He worked in retail Pharmacy, and for several years owned his own drug store. He was an artist and painter, just like his mother. His mother’s works of art are on display at the Detroit Institute of Art. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen; parents, Roy & Ivy Hebert, and three brothers, one in infancy, second in World War II, and third in 1995.

He is survived by his daughter, Marla Ann Anderson of Eaton Rapids; grandchildren, Rachelle Ann Hayward of Oklahoma City, OK, Devin Samuel John Gauna of Eaton Rapids, and Carmen Elena Gauna; sister, Norma (Richard) Gray, and Mary (William) Basista; in-laws, Violet Hough, and Murray Hough both of Lansing; and loving nephews and nieces.

Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. with memorial services 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10,2 009 at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing, officiated by Stan Heide. Nancy Heiligenthal

Nancy Ann (LaValley) Heiligenthal, 46, of Darien, WI, formerly of Charlotte, passed away on Friday, May 8, 2009 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Nancy was born on March 23, 1963 in Lansing, Mich. to Chester and Patricia (Hayes) LaValley. She graduated from Charlotte High School in 1981 and earned as associates degree from Lansing Community College. Nancy worked as an administrative assistant for Consumer Powers and EMC Insurance Company and most recently for the Darien Public Library in Wisconsin.

She is survived by her husband Robert of Darien, Wisconsin; sons, Corey (Deb) LaValley of Lowell, Anthony Lyon of Charlotte, Bradley and Cody Shull of Holt; two grandson, Corey LaValley Jr. and Tristin Hillis; her parents Chester and Stephanie LaValley of Muskegon, Patricia Soutard of Grand Ledge; sisters, Jodi LaValley (Joe) of Holt, Mary Wells of Holt, Bethany LaValley of Mason, Brian (Jody) LaValley of Lansing and Clint (Dawn) LaValley of Holt and several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

A memorial service will be held for Nancy on Saturday, May 23, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the South Lansing Church of Nazarene, 401 Holmes Road in Lansing with a luncheon to follow. Contributions can be made to Nancy’s family in care of Jodi LaValley, 4520 Weswilmar, Holt, Mi 48842, the Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation or Hospice of Greater Lansing.

Doreen Hendee

Doreen Hendee, 98, of Bloomington, Ill., died April 10, 2009. Mrs. Hendee was born April 30, 1910 in Charlotte, the daughter of George and Libbie (Lawrence) Quantrell.

Mrs. Hendee retired as a secretary from the United States Department of Agriculture in Lansing, and worked for Bauer and Bauer Law Office in Charlotte prior to that. She was a member of the Lawrence Avenue United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star in Charlotte.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Norman Harmon in 1981 and second husband, Cecil (Doc) Hendee in 2005.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Shaffer of Mesa, Ariz., and Sherry Backoff of Bloomington, Ill.; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Reverend Rich Mitterling officiating. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Charlotte Methodist Church.

Lorraine A. Hengstebeck

Lorraine A. “Lorry” Hengstebeck, of Eaton Rapids, left this world May 29, 2009. to be with her Lord and family in heaven. She was born January 20, 1911, in Fairfax, Oklahoma, to Raymond and Augusta Sperry. the family moved to Long Beach, California, where, in time, she met Ed, a sailor off the U.S.S. Texas, from Detroit. They married in 1936 and resided in Long Beach and Shelton, Nebraska, before moving to Eaton Rapids in 1947. She dearly loved Eaton Rapids. She made a home and raised two sons in the community along with working steadfastly beside Ed in the photography business. She was active in several women’s clubs over time, including the Altar Society of St. Peter’s, played golf and cards and was a long time volunteer in the hospital gift shop. Her friends and family will always remember her sharp wit and intellect. Ed and Lorry were married 50 years. He passed away in 1986.

She is survived by her sons Jim (Jo Ann) and Rick (Debbie) and four grandchildren: Eric, Mike and Dan (Beth) Hengstebeck and Juli (Scott) Hawks; and seven great grandchildren: Tori Deschepper, Kailey, Mallory and Ava Hawks and Pearson, Dapne and Thatcher Hengstebeck.

Also surviving are her brother Robert’s children: Carol Sperry, John (Kathy) Sperry and Deanna (Ed) Bruegl. Robert preceded Lorry in death in 1980. Lorry was thrilled to be able to re-establish her kinship to Bob’s children in recent years. She was very fond of them and interested in their lives.

Jim and Rick especially thank Pat Hastay for her friendship and caring for their mother in her later years. They are also extremely grateful to the caregivers of the Edgewood Retirement Center in Lansing – especially Alice, Heather and Pat – and Heartland Health Care, especially Rhonda Atkins, Social Worker. Their attentions were always tender and loving.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter Catholic Church in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids with visitation one hour before Mass at church. A Rosary will be prayed Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. In memory of Lorry memorial contributions may be made to the E.R.M.C. Auxiliary. Kenneth Herman

Kenneth L. Herman, 73, of Charlotte, died on Friday June 12, 2009. Mr. Herman was born June 11, 1936 in Calasville, Mont., the son of Claude and Elsie (Owens) Herman.

Mr. Herman was an automotive detailer, and liked to fix used bicycles for a hobby when he lived on Shepherd St.

He was preceded in death by his step-daughter, Theresa Newland.

He is survived by his wife, Marilee Herman of Charlotte; son, Lyle Herman; daughters, Vicki Nelson; Lana McCalvey, all of Mont.; daughter, Susan Herman of Seattle, Wash; step-sons, Terry (Kathy) Frazier of Orlando, Fla., Troy (Jessie) Frazier of Eaton Rapids, and Timothy Frazier of Muskegon; 10 grandchildren and five step-grandchildren; and brother, Carl Herman of Wash.

A memorial service was held at Pray Funeral Home Wednesday, June 17, 2009, with Celebrant Rich Mitterling officiating.

Lee Herrick

Lee J. Herrick, 82, of Charlotte, died Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at the Sunny Acres AFC Home in Madison Heights, Mich., after a lengthy illness. Lee was born Jan. 7, 1927 in Mason, the son of Frank E. and Myrtle (Bolock) Herrick and had been a Charlotte resident for about 55 years.

He was a World War II Army Veteran and had been employed as an electrician for Owens-Illinois Glass Co. of Charlotte from where he retired in 1991. He was a life member of the American Legion Post No. 42 and V.F.W. Post No. 2406 both of Charlotte, was a member of Charlotte Lodge No. 120 F. and A.M. (PM), the Horace S. Maynard Chapter No. 82 RAM (PHP), Leslie Council Chapter No. 50 R. and S.M. (PTIM), Charlotte Commandery No. 37 KT (PC), the O.E.S. No. 218, the Scottish Rite, Saladin Shrine and Peace Lutheran Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie (Crane) Herrick on June 18, 2008.

Surviving are his son, Frank (Judy) Herrick of Madison Heights; his daughter, Linda (Scott) Prentice of Wyoming, Mich.; granddaughters, Sarah and Monica Prentice and his sisters, Sharon (Franklin) Ward of Oakley, MI.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Oct. 6,2009 at the Peace Lutheran Church, charlotte with Rev. Sarah Friesen-Carper officiating. Interment was in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Charlotte.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation.

Phyllis Arlene Hicks

Phyllis Arlene Hicks of Eaton Rapids, born September 16, 1924 to Alfred and Margaret Olin in Lansing, Michigan died January 18, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband Fred in 1998, and a grandson Lynn Alan VanderMoere, Jr. and great granddaughter Elanah Hartman.

She is survived by 2 daughters Karen (Patrick) Glynn and Candice Hardenburg (James Stegenga, Sr.), two sons the Rev. F. Neal (Mari) Hicks, Jr., and Michael (Beverly) Hicks, Sr.; 12 grandchildren 3 step-grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 3 step-great grandchildren and her lifelong friend Joan Porter. Phyllis graduated from Bath High School and was formerly a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church of Eaton Rapids. She married Fred Hicks June 27, 1942 and was married for 56 years. She worked for Oldsmobile during WWII and retired from Ingham Regional Medical Center in 1987 after 15 years of service. Phyllis especially loved to cook and also enjoyed bowling, bingo, golfing, fishing and camping.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Avenue, Lansing with the Rev. F. Neal Hicks officiating. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eaton Rapids. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Chapel. Contributions can be made to the Eaton Community Hospice, 2675 South Cochran, Charlotte, MI 48813.

Robert Randall Higbie

Robert Randall Higbie, age 84 of Eaton Rapids passed away from this life to his Eternal Home on June 23, 2009. Born October 12, 1924 to Daniel and Ella Josephine Higbie, Bob was a lifelong resident of Eaton Rapids. He married Ruth Arlene Smart on June 21, 1945 after he served in the U.S. Navy as a Boatswains mate aboard the LST 308 during WWII. He was also a retired Truck Driver for Interstate Motor Freight. He was truly a people person. He loved talking and laughing with his many friends at Miller’s and McDonalds. HE had many God given talents, among them the gift of music and rhyme. He was a published poet and enjoyed writing poems for family and friends for every occasion. He had a great love for his church and church family at The Church of The Nazarene where he was a lifelong member. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel; mother, Ella Josephine; one brother, Charles; sisters, Rosemond Smart, Aristine Miksell and Marcella Brenner; and his wife, of 62 years, Ruth.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jackie (Harns) Higbie; children, Sonja (John) Oatley of Lansing, Claudia (Dwight) Payne of Eaton Rapids, Nanette Doxsie (Terry Ranshaw) of Charlotte, Theresa (Phillip) Treadwell of Flushing, Sherrel (Kevin) Crawley of Davison, Evelyn (Larry) Kinney of KS, Mary (Tom) Klinert of MI, Janice (Larry) Orr of CA, David (Esther) Harns of MI, Roger and (Sara) Harns of MI; 28 grandchildren; 46 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
