Marian Green
Marian Emma Oaster was born on Feb. 28, 1930, in Battle Creek, to Raymond and Martha (Augustine) Oaster and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1948.
She married Robert V. Green on July 17, 1950, and they resided in Bellevue for the next 59 years, the last 20 years being split with their cabin in Trout Lake, Mich.
Marian loved life, her community and the many people she encountered along the way. As a young wife and mother, she was a reporter for the Battle Creek Enquirer and also worked in the Boy Scouts of America office.
After the children had entered elementary school, she accepted a position with the Department of Defense at the Federal Center in Battle Creek, where she completed her 24 year career as an administrative supervisor.
Her strong commitment for community was best demonstrated through her long tenure with the DOD Federal Credit Union, Bellevue Rescue Squad volunteer, Village of Bellevue council member, member of the Etcetera Club, served on the Committee of 100 which resulted in the establishment of the Battle Creek Vo-Ed Center, and in 1978 received the honor of being Bellevue’s Citizen of the Year.
Marian loved family…all of her family! A loving husband of almost 59 years, her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren, each will attest to the generosity of her love, time and treasures and could recall countless occasions when she came to their aid, unselfishly.
An only child, Marian was loved by her parents and endeared by her extended family including numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
After marriage, her extended family grew considerably with the addition of cherished “in-laws”, nieces, nephews and cousins. For Marian it was one big happy family.
Beyond the family were friends…lots of friends. The many years of living in a small community, years of employment, and the years spent at Trout Lake, long lasting, valued friendships were formed. Marian loved her dear friends and was well loved in return.
Marian was a woman who found joy in the journey. She will be remembered for her smile, good listening ear, consoling words and strong character. Among many other things, she will be remembered for the Trout Lake tradition.
Starting in the late 1960’s she and Bob opened their one week summer vacation to the entire family, and eventually extended their vacation to a second week for friends.
The routine was basically the same: meals together, be prepared to take a turn at dishes, relax, read, enjoy the lake, adventure, play games or have fun doing whatever.
The more the merrier was her motto. After the purchase of their cabin in 1989, tradition evolved into an open door policy. This policy was true at their home as well. You might say Marian’s life was an open book, for all to know and share.
Loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, cousin, confidant and friend. Marian faced death the same way she faced life, looking forward with courage and contentment. While she has physically left our presence, her love and kindness will live forever in all who came to know her.
Marian Emma Green, 79, passed from this life into eternal life on April 22, 2009 in Hollywood, Fla.
She is preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Robert V. Green of Bellevue; children and spouses, Raymond (and Dea) Green of Winchester, KY, Sally (and Terry) Barr of Biscayne Park, Fla., and Robert A. (and Ruth) Green of Brighton; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Bellevue United Methodist Church, located at 122 W. Capital Ave., Bellevue, on May 30 at 11 a.m.; a luncheon at the church will follow the service.
