Wendola Budd

Wendola A. Budd, of Mason, passed away at home under the loving care of her family on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009 at the age of 96. She was born April 12, 1912 to Phil and Louise Fogg in Bunkerhill.

She attended country school and later graduated from Leslie High School. Wendola later met George Budd of Leslie and they then married. They owned restaurants in Mason and Leslie. After George passed away she cooked at Budd's restaurant in Leslie. After retiring, she moved to Mason and attended the Methodist Church and the Senior Citizen Center. She took up bowling and loved to travel. She was a mother to four great-grandchildren.

She is survived by sons, Jim (Ann Louise) and Don (Barbara); eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; sister, June Shearer; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Fogg and Hazel Fogg and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no services at this time. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Burial will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery.

For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Hospice.

Arrangements are being handled by the J.C. Adams Funeral Home, Leslie Chapel, (517) 589-8216.

George Buletza

George F.R. Buletza, 92, of Charlotte, died Friday, Oct. 2, 2009. Mr. Buletza was born April 21, 1917 in PA, the son of John and Barbara (Busko) Buletza.

Mr. Buletza was a teacher, principal, superintendent, professor at Western Michigan University and retired as Executive of RCA Learning Corporation. He received his Masters Degree in education from Columbia University.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Mary; parents and brother, John Buletza, Jr.

Mr. Buletza is survived by his son, Wayne (Mary) Buletza of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Jennifer (Thad) Shank, Kristin (Aaron) Crandall; six great grandchildren, Kaine Buletza, Madeline Shank, Kate Shank, Vada Crandall, Reese Crandall, Riley Crandall.

A scripture service was held Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009 at Pray Funeral Home, Charlotte, with Rev. Father Francis Mossholder officiating.

Joel Burnett

Joel Burnett, 90, of Charlotte, passed away unexpectedly at home in Charlotte on March 5, 2009. He was born March 19, 1918 in Brookfield Township in the same home where he passed away.

He was a member of South Cochran Church of God. He graduated from Olivet High School in 1937, after which he worked briefly in California as a farm laborer and ranch hand.

He was a lifelong farmer who started milking cows at age five and was still gardening, caring for his fruit trees and tending chickens up until his death. He especially loved working horses and raising sheep.

He will long be remembered for the size of his garden, the flowers he grew, and his pleasure in sharing the harvest of his labors.

Many will remember Joel for the feathers in his hat and as the sheep farmer on S. Cochran.

All his grandchildren cherish the times they spent on the farm, especially picking Indian corn, shearing sheep, cracking hickory nuts, digging leeks, picking wildflowers, playing with kittens, riding hay wagons, listening to his folk rhymes and the amazing stories he fold of the olden days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Nahum and Effie (Bishop) Burnett and his only brother, Jack Burnett.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Ola (Halsey) Burnett and by their children, Angela (George) Leonard, Dave (Teri) Burnett, Carolyn (Edward) Moghtader and Juanita (Kevin) Thornton; eight grandchildren, Kevin (Shannon) Leonard, Christy (Glen) Bobart, Bob (Leslie) Burnett, Jeremy (Elissa) Moghtader, Justin Moghtader, Brock Thornton, Blain (Jennifer) Thornton and Blake Thornton; five great grandchildren and sister-in-law, Ila Burnett.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 9, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home, Charlotte with Pastor Perry Purcell officiating.

Interment was in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

Teri Burnett

Alma Terise Burnett, “Teri”, 67, of Lansing, passed away unexpectedly at home in Lansing on April 11, 2009. She was born June 1, 1941 in Dayton, Ohio to Alfred T. and Mary Jane Lambert, both deceased.

Teri was raised in the Church of God in Bellefontaine, Ohio where her mother played the piano. religious music and the church was always a central part of her life, starting as a young child. She enjoyed singing in church: solos, choir and from the pew. The church and workshiping God through music was a central focus and passion until her death. Family was very important to Teri, especially time spent with her grandchildren.

Teri is survived by her husband of 46+ years, Dave Burnett; daughter, Nora Christine (Glen) Bobart; son, Robert N. (Leslie) Burnett; five grandchildren, Cassandra Bobart, Valerie Bobart, Kinsey Burnett, Quentin Bobart and Kaelyn Burnett; brother, Paul A. (Irene) Lambert of Lake Jackson, Texas; mother-in-law, Ola E. Burnett; 10 nephews and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 16, 2009 at the Pennway Church of God, 1101 E. Cavanaugh Road, Lansing, MI 48910. Interment in the Bosworth Cemetery, Olivet.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Teri Burnett may go to the Church of God Global Missions, the charity of your choice or an event to spend time with your family.

Leone Burt

Leone Burt, 79, of Bellevue, died Wednesday, December 2, 2009. She was born May 12, 1930 in Charlotte, the daughter of William and Frances (Arthurholt) Stetler. Leone was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting, shopping and going to garage sales. She has a Schnauzer name Mandy who she liked to spend time with. She was most proud of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles; son, Randy (Valerie) Burt of Olivet; daughters, Sheila (Dick) Youngs of Olivet and Marsha Hayes of Charlotte; sons, Dale (Diane) Burt of Ionia; son, Jeff (Linda) Burt of Bellevue; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and brother, William Stetler of Lansing.

Funeral services will be Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at Pray Funeral Home with Reverend Charles Jensen officiating.

Walter Lee Bush

Walter Lee Bush of Eaton Rapids, age 84 died Sunday, September 6, 2009 at the Dimondale Nursing Center in Windsor Township. Born January 14, 1925 in Eaton Rapids, the son of Fredrick and Vera (Crout) Bush. Mr. Bush graduated from the Eaton Rapids High School, class of 1943, he served in the Army during WWII. Mr. Bush retired from General Motors in Lansing as a Supervisor with over 38 years of service. Walt enjoyed fishing, golfing and bowling. After retirement he and wife Carol moved to Florida and lived there full time for 26 years. His wife Carol (Bartlett) died in 2005 after 62 years of marriage.

He is survived by his 3 children, W. Thomas (Ruth L.) Bush of Eaton Rapids, Linda Hoyland of Lake Linden, MI and Laura (Charles) Andrews of Mason; 6 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Mr. Bush requested no services and that cremation would take place. Arrangements are through the Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. For online condolences go to www.skinnerfuneralhome.com.

Wilda Bust

Wilda (Martens) Bust, 100, of Marinette, Wis., formerly of Charlotte, passed away on Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Luther Home in Marinette where she had been for the past 4 ˝ years. She was the ninth of 13 children born to John Henry Martens and Eva Lena (Davis) Martens on Dec. 6, 1908.

He birthplace was the last brick house on the south side of West Lawrence Ave. as you come to M-66 south of Nashville. She attended Biegh School for eight years, before going to Nashville High School. Her graduating class of 1926 had 26 students.

After attending Western State Normal for one year, she was granted a life teaching certificate for teaching elementary school.

She finished her bachelor’s degree in 1958. Her first school was the Ells School. She met Paul Bust and they were married. She continued to teach school in many rural schools: Barnes, Maurer, VerPlank, Carlisle, North Kalamo, Canfield, Zachariah, West Windsor and Morse for a total of 17 years.

Her teaching career also included 10.5 years at Galewood, six years at Washington and one year in Coolidge, Ariz. She retired in 1971.

Wilda and Paul were married on May 29, 1934. Wilda’s hobbies included playing cards, raising flowers and making many quilts.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charlotte and their circle made many quilts for charity.

Paul preceded her in death on Jan. 5, 1968. She is survived by two sons, Donald Leone Locke) Bust of Menominee, Mich., and Gordon (Tunde) Davis of Budapest, Hungary; five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

She has numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews that have enriched her life the past six years since her stroke with their love, cards, letters, gifts, flowers, visits and prayers.

Funeral services were to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 at the Burkhead-Green Funeral Home of Charlotte. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Activity Department of Luther Home, 831 Pinebeach Rd. Marinette, WI 54143. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

Fermon Byington

Fermon “Pete” J. Byington, 78, of Bellevue, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 at Sparrow Health System, Lansing. he was born Nov. 13, 1930, the son of Oliver and Flora (Blair) Byington in Herculaneum, Mo.

Pete served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict and then worked as a railroad car inspector for Conrail for 35 years, retiring in 1991. Pete was a member of Bellevue Christian Center. He loved his church family and enjoyed reading westerns, gardening, fishing, the outdoors and playing cards and cribbage. He attended Navy reunions with his fellow crew members of the U.S.S. Monrovia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Sharon Hart and brothers, Jim and John.

He married Viola M. Willits on Feb. 18, 1956 in Otego, Mich. Viola survives. Also surviving are sons, Bradley (Bernadette) Byington of Breeding, Ky., Brian (Leslie) Byington of Battle Creek; daughter, Tracey (Scott) Gerdeman of Caledonia; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brothers, Philip (Peggy) Byington of Vermontville, Floyd “Jack” (Orian) Byington of Salem, Mo., Howard (Shirley) Byington of Denton, Texas; sisters, Hazel (David) Hodges of Lansing, Alice (Barry) Carty of Salem, Mo., and Mary (Marvin) Peterman of Rolla, Mo.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at Bellevue Christina Center with Pastor Danesh Manik officiating.

Memorial donations may go to Bellevue Christian Center or Eaton Community Hospice. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral home, Lehman Chapel, Bellevue (www.shawfuneralhome.com).

Dorothy L. Byrd

Dorothy L. Byrd, 86, of Eaton Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 11, 2009. She was born Jan. 28, 1923 in Paris, Tenn. to W. Alfred and Annie Ellis. Dorothy retired from Michigan State University. She was a loving homemaker who was devoted to her family and had a gift for cooking and baking for which she will be fondly remembered. She was a lifelong woman of faith and a charter member of Charity Baptist Church in Mason. Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, William Ellis; and grandson, Michael Dewey. Surviving are her husband of 68 years, Walter H. Byrd; daughters, Joyce Peppel, Sue (Douglas) Brower and Kathy (Richard) Girth; grandchildren, Timothy (Melissa) Austin, Tamara Austin, Amanda Girth (Drew) Thompson), Brandee (David) West, and R. Joshua (Stephanie) Girth; great grandchildren, Brittany Austin, David West III, and Claire Girth; sister Catherine Cantrell; and her dearest aunt, Imogene Beasley. Private graveside service for the immediate and extended family were held Tuesday, Sept. 15 in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Lansing. Those desiring may make contributions to Hospice of Lansing, 4052 Legacy Parkway, Ste. 200, Lansing, Michigan 48911 in memory of Mrs. Byrd.
